Book Description
Bamboo's amazing versatility, strength, workability, and beauty have given it a longer and more varied role in human culture than any other plant known to humankind. This acclaimed sourcebook details the myriad ways in which this extraordinary plant is now used and presents many options for its use in the future. A bounty of facts and lore, the profusely illustrated book includes:
Bamboo cultivation - how to grow, maintain, and harvest bamboo
Crafts and constructions using bamboo: floors, fences, papers, playgrounds (built by kids!), swings, and treehouses
A "whole bamboo catalog" of tools and other artifacts made from bamboo - acupuncture needles, blowguns, bridges, kites, ships, violins, windmills, and a thousand other bamboo things
The seemingly endless variety of shelter applications, including lamination, "plybamboo," reinforced concrete, and earthquake-zone construction
Bamboo and the arts - a bamboo orchestra, the role of bamboo in the ancient "friendship ceremony," Sumi-e painting, and the depiction of the quivering leaf of the bamboo plant
An astonishing compendium of bamboo science, covering more than 1,200 species from 4 inches to 100 feet high (one species has been known to grow 4 feet in 24 hours)

Great Beginning.......2007-01-23
In a World in which only three countries have doubled their forest resources while the rest of the nations are working on depleting theirs; a global crisis waiting to happen because of our irresponsible handling of our natural resources, bamboo offers a solution that could definately take us back to a healthy equilibrium. This book gives a glance of its many uses and benefits. Anybody interested in life has got to take a dive into this amazing research. This book is literally, "the top of the iceberg."
So much to learn, yet still not done with it!.......2004-12-11
I bought this book awhile ago. . . .and unfortunately, have enough going on that I can't just sit down and read it beginning to end, but already I know a LOT more about a plant I've always been fascinated with. Lots of definitions, and pictures, and illustrations. If there's anything that could be considered a detraction, there's maybe TOO much information on the plant and its uses.
a thoroughly great book to add to a collection for anyone into herbal knowledge or lore, interested in plants, or wants to just know more about bamboo.

The most comprehensive book on bamboo.................2004-02-23
Written by the one of the few people in the world qualified to produce a monograph on bamboo, it is as comprehensive as it gets. David Farrelly has spent more than a decade planting, harvesting, and building with bamboo in Mexico, Nicaragua, and the United States. If you are only interested in the growing of bamboo as an ornamental, then this book may not be exactly what you expect, but it still serves up more information on bamboo growing, propagation and care, and bamboo species and description then any other currently available books on bamboo. Don't expect grossy pictures either, but line drawings and old black and white photographs somehow seems to fit well in this book. Grossy pictures would have been out of place here. What really makes this book a must read is the other non-botanical, non-horticultural information on bamboo that the book includes - it's history, it's multiple of uses, it's interaction with mankind through the ages.
If you are into bamboo beyond it's aesthietics, this is a "must read". If you are only into ornamental bamboos, this is still a good reference, and reading it will change your respect for what must be truly the most useful of all plants on planet earth.
Read this book first if you are new to bamboo!.......2003-01-06
This was the first book I read about bamboo many years ago when I first started planting bamboo. I guess the best way to describe it would be to call it "The Last Whole Earth Catalog of Bamboo". It covers all aspects of bamboo, facts and fiction, reality and myth. This book is for the true lover of bamboo.
Bamboo Science, Philosophy, Opinion and Lore.......2000-08-12
When I first read "The Book of Bamboo" many years ago, I thought it was brilliantly researched but simply too eccentric in organization and style to be representative of mainstream thought on the subject. Despite the wealth of information it contains, I hesitated to recommend it to people for fear its intensity would put people off rather than draw them in. However, after several years of growing bamboo in coastal northern California, I recently picked it up again and instantly recognized it for the classic it is. Fewer than 1 percent of 1 percent of all non-fiction books published are ever republished after they go out of print, especially by a prestigious national firm with major editorial capabilities. See for yourself why David Farrelly's "The Book of Bamboo" is one of those rare, wonderful books worthy of such investment and respect.

Delightful Illustrated Guide to Growing Bamboo.......2000-08-12
Before Michael Bell's book, "The Gardener's Guide to Growing Temperate Bamboos," was published early in 2000, for many years "Bamboos" by Christine Recht and Max Wetterwald was the only fully color photo illustrated volume on growing and landscaping with bamboo that was readily available in the United States. Originally translated from the German, it remains one of the best guides not only for the excellent photographs but also for the charming text. "Bamboos" has sections on bamboo types (clumping and running) and basic morphology, practical chapters on how to plant, care for and limit the growth of bamboo, an encyclopedic section listing bamboos by species, qualities, climate, and requirements, and specialist chapters on such niceties as growing bamboo in containers and using them in bonsai. There are a couple of captions in the book that are applied to the wrong photographs, and some of the information given is occasionally contradicted in newer texts, as knowledge of this wonderful plant continues to evolve. However, these differences are very minor and do not detract from the value of this book, which remains a solid reference for identifying and growing bamboos. It is a visually beautiful book as well, useful for looking up pictures of the different types of bamboo while going through a mail-order nursery's catalog of available plants, and for imagining how different types might complement your garden, terrace or patio. For anyone who is even thinking about planting bamboo, this book is essential reading.
Bamboo's.......1998-10-24
Still one of the most visual works on bamboo, originally translated from a German book, "Bamboo"s, by Christine Recht & Max F. Wetterwald, is wonderfully filled with color pictures of many bamboo species, and the black and white drawings are very clear, especially in explaining the paticulars of both running, and non invasive varieties. The individual description's are compact, yet informative, leaving room for a large volume of cultivars, with a general introduction to each type first. I counted more than 85 species, 34 of which are the popular Phyllostachys. The book is of good manufacture, and my hardback is still in great shape.
Customer Reviews:
I beg to differ..........2005-04-24
I beg to differ with the other reviewer. There is no comprehensive treatment of the bamboo species here. This is a technical work on bamboo morphology, physiology and stuff like that. You won't find descriptions of "the bamboos" here. Sorry but couldn't let that stand.
A great Bamboo Reference!.......2002-12-24
I bought this book several years ago - and I use it often when I need to look up a bamboo species. My knowledge of bamboo was rather limited, and I find it interesting that these grass species are found in Asia, as well as South America. For anyone interested in grasses, this book is a must!

Book Description
When, in the dawn of the 19th century, Humboldt and Bonplant avidly toured the American surface, they included in their notes that the Quindio region in Colombia was practically covered with guadua trees. That is not surprising. The fertile, humid, well-drained soil in this zone is completely apt for these plants. Guadua wood is used for everything: landscaping, waterworks, columns, beams, gates, bridges, ladders, furniture, recipients. It's fast growth -up to 1.20m. in one day-and its uncommon flexibility make it an attractive material for this region's people's ingeniousness; they have deployed all of their creativity in using this tree. With more than 300 color photographs that depict the history and origin of the guadua bamboo, its natural production, and how it is used in housing construction and that of other spaces, this 176-page book is not only a well deserved elegy to the guadua but also a beautiful manner through which to make its sublime properties better known.

Bamboo Design Inspiration.......2007-07-25
Marcelo Villegas's books on Guadua construction and the history of the Colombian building and their bamboo culture. I purchased this book in a bookstore in Bogotá in 2002 and it really blew my mind. I alter returned to Colombia to visit the areas photographed in the book. I later started a business and I can honestly say if it were not for this book and his net book New Bamboo I would have never had the inspiration to start this exciting business. The book is not as intensive as his proceeding book New Bamboo but I could not recommend high enough.

Description:
Field studies in Acre, Brazil assessed logging impacts of a certified community timber management project. The main objectives of the study were: (1) to determine if damage incidence to future crop trees (FCTs; >=20cm diameter at breast height (dbh)) differs between (a) forest with and without bamboo (Guadua spp.), and (b) trees with and without lianas; (2) to what extent harvesting can be conducted more intensely (m^3ha^-^1), without incurring greater FCT damage; and (3) to what extent marking diminishes FCT damage. Full inventories of FCTs of 50 commercial species complexes were conducted before and after logging in 50m-radius zones of impact around each designated harvest tree in three 10ha (200mx500m) logging blocks. We also mapped all forested areas potentially influenced by logging, including skid trails, log landings and felling gaps, throughout the 30ha logged. More than 28% of the forest area was disturbed by logging, with 12.1% in skid trails and 16.8% in gap clearings, indicating that the forest gap mosaic can be significantly altered even when reduced-impact logging guidelines are followed. Overall, 15% of FCTs inventoried were damaged. Damage rates were not significantly reduced by marking treatment, location in bamboo-dominated forest, or liana load on FCT damage. Harvest intensity did not influence the probability of FCT damage. For future studies, it would be prudent to address impacts of timber extraction on other livelihood activities, such as non-timber forest product collection, particularly in such regions as the Brazilian Amazon, where many communities are attempting to integrate a suite of income-generating activities.

Customer Reviews:
A good book for Scandinavian travel.......2000-04-20
Overall a good book for Scandinavian travel. The things I liked about the book include the general information about each country, it was very helpful during a recent trip to Norway and Denmark. The hotel and restaurant information was useful and right on. It is a good guide to use if you want to see the highlights of each country, but perhaps lacks in-depth information about off the beaten path.
A couple of things that are lacking in the book include web site and email addresses for hotels, restaurants and museums. Also, there is not a lot of information in the book about train or boat travel in Scandinavia.
Even though this book was released in 2000, some of the times museums were open differed from the guide, so confirm with the museum before exploring.
If you are just going to one country, I would recommend purchasing a specific book on that country. Overall, I was pleased with my purchase and it served me well while in Scandinavia.
