4 out of 5 stars Generally good reading.......2001-04-09

Most anthologies are inconsistent, as the quality of the various contributions varies from author to author. "Talking Leaves" is, unfortunately, no exception. While editor Craig Lesley's decision to introduce several new (sometimes unpublished) writers is commendable, there are a few rather mediocre stories or vignettes. Also, I noticed a tendency on the part of Oregon-resident Lesley to slightly favor writers from Pacific Northwest nations. Nonetheless, I would say the vast majority of the contributions are very good, if not excellent, and the variety of styles and apects of Native American life/history it contains is very impressive. The excerpts taken out of novels, something I usually dislike, are fairly good and function well as short stories (i.e. from N. Scott Momaday's "Ancient Child" and James Welch's "Fools Crow"), even though it's still obvious that they are taken from larger works. By far the best contribution is "Aunt Moon's Young Man" by Linda Hogan. The longest story in the book, it is beautifully written and absorbing - I had the impression I had just finished a novel after reading it. Thomas King's "A Seat in the Garden" is also one of the better contributions, and absolutely hilarious. In fact, a nice aspect that comes out of many of the stories is the dry humor or humorous themes, from a white revival preacher's attempt to get a very relectant Indian family to pray with him to an elderly woman's dilemmas with a cheap, noisy new refrigerator. "Talking Leaves" is a good introduction to Native American literature, although it was published almost a decade ago, so it does not include some of the younger writers who emerged in the past few years (most notably Sherman Alexie).

This book was awesome! It was the most enchanting short stories I have ever read. It was marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars Shows why it's so vital to keep the FUN in natural science........1999-08-23

This book documents the tragic exit of great talents from the natural sciences that results when overdriven undergraduates lose sight of the fun and sense of wonder that are at the heart of the most successful scientific careers.

Making "Feynman's Lost Lecture: The Motion of Planets Around the Sun" (David and Judith Goodstein, 1996) and "Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar" part of the required reading list for all entering freshmen--and giving them the chance to discuss these books with lively professors who have managed to retain their own Feynmanesque senses of fun and wonder--would be a helpful antidote for this.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligently researched, clearly written, very valuable........1999-08-03

The authors interviewed hundreds of college students whose high-school SAT math scores were at least 650 and who started their college careers in natural science, mathematics or engineering.

The interviewees were selected randomly for the authors by the participating colleges and universities, from a much larger pool of students whose academic profiles matched the authors' research design.

In accordance with this research design, approximately half of those interviewed had switched majors out of science-math-engineering (SME) programs by their senior years. The other half of those interviewed were still SME majors as seniors, and planned to graduate with a degree in natural science, mathematics or engineering.

Both groups of students voiced serious criticism of the deliberately competitive, grade on a curve, "overwhelm them and weed them out" approach that is widely used in teaching freshman and sophomore courses in SME-track curricula, particularly calculus, physics and organic chemistry.

The authors found it very difficult to predict which students had switched out of SME-track majors and which had stayed using any of the stay-vs-switch criteria commonly cited by SME faculty members, which include native ability, willingness to work hard, college grades, gender, ethnic background, and high-school preparation for college-level work in the sciences.

Rather, they found that the chief distinguishing characteristic of those who did not switch was the individuals' willingness to put up with the mental and emotional abuse heaped upon them by this "drinking from a fire hose" approach to instruction in their freshman and sophomore years.

These conclusions fit well with my own experiences at a major West Coast research university, as a white male undergraduate with a 750+ SAT verbal score and a 700+ SAT math score (without any special "prepare for the SAT" courses of any kind) who had graduated in the top 5% of my West Coast suburban high school class. I switched out of the SME track at the end of my sophomore year for several of the reasons cited in this book, and graduated two years later with a liberal arts degree in a field that had taught me to think critically, not memorize by blind repetition. Then I returned to the SME track later as a graduate student (no easy feat!) after I had had time to revisit the concepts thrown at me willy nilly in those first two years and see what they were good for. Today, I'm a registered professional engineer with an engineering master's degree, doing quite well in my field.

Based on this book's carefully assembled results and my own experience, I have avoided sending any of my children to my alma mater as freshmen or sophomores.

Instead, I have recommended that they do as my younger brother did. He did his freshman and sophomore work at a good community college, then transferred to a small state college with a very limited graduate program for his upper-division courses. Next he earned his master's degree at my alma mater, then went on to another nationally-ranked graduate program for his PhD. At each institution, he found himself in the group of students that enjoyed the focused attention of the faculty, and his SME learning experience was far, far superior to mine.

Read this book. Think about it carefully. Then plan your educational strategy to avoid being "weeded out" by SME faculty who don't want to admit that you exist until you have put up with two solid years of cheerful neglect and brutal abuse.

A couple of weeks ago I received the new edition of this Irreverent guide, and I am sorry to tell you that it was a waste of money! Yes, it has pages listing restaurants, hotels, attractions etc. but with no real detail. A thin book that is also thin on information.

My advice for a Disney trip - buy the Unofficial Disney guide, a much more comprehensive guide, packed with helpful advice and information.

Please read the previous reviews with the knowledge that they are actually for the last edition of the book, written by other authors. I have lived practically next to WDW for over 10 years and I have corrected many of the oversights from the previous editions. If you have read the book since its release in September, I encourage you to post a review. Thanks!

This lively guide lives up to its title by page 5, when it poses the question, "What do Viagra and Walt Disney World have in common?" (Answer: you have to wait an hour for a two-minute ride. B-dum-bum.) Savvy authors Diane Bair and Pamela Wright amuse and inform as they deliver the lowdown on where to see Mickey M. in "person," dump your sullen teens for a few hours, or book a much-needed "serenity massage" after a long day of toddler-wrangling. Handily divided into sections covering accommodations, dining, diversions, and so forth, this wry tome leaves no stone unturned or bloated cartoon character unpunctured. Perhaps most valuable is the flinty, no-nonsense analysis of the various themed Disney hotels--which ones appeal to children, which to adults, and which are best avoided altogether. And if you have any energy left after the Magic Kingdom spits you out, you'll also find info on the Orlando area's other attractions--can you really afford to miss Gatorland? --Rebecca Gleason

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2004-01-13

It is true that this reveiwer seemed to hate all things Disney and prefered the other Orlando area attractions. This book would be fine if I was looking for information on other area attractions, but I bought the book for information on WDW.

The information they did provide on WDW was out of date. The book was published in 2002; however they talk about visiting Discovery Island (closed in 1999), River Country (closed 2001?), the Skyway (closed 1999), etc.

I was so disappointed in this book. I am a true Disney fan and I was looking for an unbiased opinion of Disney World, what I got was useless information about WDW and alot of information on why I shouldn't go to WDW.

              1 out of 5 stars Simply Awful.......2002-02-12

              ...

Since most of the guides don't change much from year to year, I bought 2 new books for this trip... The Irreverent Guide and the Unoffical Guide by Bob Sehlinger. For extra money, the Unofficial Guide offers a whopping 524 more pages (768 vs. 244).

Both books offer the same "take" on WDW... An impartial, tell it like it is account of the happiest place on earth. The Unofficial Guide not only offers it's opinion, but almost always also offers reader comments about the various attractions/resorts/restuarants. The Unoffical Guide is also organized MUCH more efficiently, and it is very easy to go back and find information even without using the index. The Irreverent Guide is a mess that even an index doesn't help. The Irreverent guide also has some glaring errors; for example, it "reviews" both Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and Dream Flight. IIRC, Buzz took over Dream Flight's space.

The key reason that I bought the Irreverent Guide was for the actual irreverence...which doesn't really exist.

In a nutshell, this is the worst WDW Guide that I have ever purchased...and then has a terrible price vs. content ration on top of it.

If you want to read the same old sugary sweet... about Disney, buy another guide book. The title says it all- irreverent. If you don't want to hear the negative things, don't buy the book. Contrary to the other reviews of this book, I really enjoyed it. It was helpful, hilarious, and a breath of fresh air. I used 3 other guide books for my trip which all gave the same exact info. This book gives you the real goods. I planned a very short stop-over in Orlando, and quite frankly the thought of trying to prioritize which of the hundreds of attractions to check out made me ill. Not only that, but I didn't want to waste my hard earned money only to be disappointed. Let's face it, Disney and Orlando are not cheap. This book let me know what to expect and helped me to make informed decisions. I never buy just one guide book- this was definitely a good supplement. I plan on seeing if there is an irreverent guide available for my next destination.

              1 out of 5 stars Too irreverent.......2000-11-14

I am always dubious when a book contains as many typographical errors and misspellings as this one does. Sea World's coaster is Kraken, not "Kracken" and the ride at Disney MGM is the Tower of Terror not "Twilight Zone of Terror." When you see this you have to ask whether the writer and editor fully understand (or care about) what they are writing about.

The title is a misnomer -- this book contains nearly as much information about the nearby Universal parks as it is about Walt Disney World. Not a bad thing, but if you do not plan to visit Universal (we didn't) much of the content here will be useless to you.

I give it a star because there are a few more insider tips than you'd find in an article in the travel section of your Sunday newspaper and some of them are refreshingly negative -- I do appreciate it when a travel writer comes out and tells us when she thinks something is bad. The phone numbers are well organized. Some of the restaurant recommendations were great.

Overall, however, the text is poorly organized, sometimes repeating information you just read in an earlier chapter. For the most part, the author seems to favor cute puns over information you can actually use. After reading "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, 2001," this was a huge disappointment.

                  Book Description

“For weeks the grownups at home and in the shops had been whispering together. I’d heard the word ‘war’ more and more often, but if I tried to ask questions, they changed the subject. Mum and Dad only said that they did not want to worry me. They told me I was too young to understand what was happening. They always seemed so serious now. War obviously meant things would be a lot different.

On Sunday, September 3, 1939, at 11:00 A.M., Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. At 11:27 A.M. the first air raid siren wailed across London. We heard its mournful, chilling sound over the wireless, which we listened to all that day. King George spoke to the nation on the wireless. His voice was trembling. At the end of the speech, he announced, ‘We are at war.’ Hearing these words gave me a funny feeling in my stomach. I was scared!”

I wished this was longer and went into greater depth of the little things in life that changed during war time. There were some very interesting items, that unlesss you lived during those times you just wouldn't think about (driving without headlights at night, why street signs had to be taken down). It provides details of life at the time that only someone alive to live it could provide.

As I listened to Mrs. Stalcup's book, "On the Home Front," I was sucked into a world of Spitfires, Hurricane Bombers, and the Little Ships bringing soldiers from Dunkirk to Dover. Tears were shed when soldiers were lost in battle, and there was rejoicing when a major battle was won. I saw blood, I saw tears, and I saw glory.

It was quite an experience for my classmates and me. We had an author reading her book. Sometimes she would choose a student to read certain chapters because they were so emotional for her, such as the Little Ships and the Spitfire Funds.

It was an amazing book about a young girl who was living during World War Two. But the most amazing paart about it was who was reading it - the little girl from the book!!!!!

Stalcup shares her memoir of growing up in the town of Lydney, England, during World War 11. Ann stays with her parents and experiences war as it comes to her community with evacuees, German prisoners, Australian food packages, and American soldiers. Short, succinct chapters, enhanced by personal and archival photographs, make this a book to be savored as a read aloud or when read independently. Stalcup imparts the flavors of every day English life such as four o'clock tea, sweets, walks in the country, and the pleasures of a front garden, and how they are changed by a world at war. She retells moments of her life, from the age of three in 1938 with her first gas mask to V.E. Day in 1945. This factual memoir complements historical fiction titles such as Pearson's The Sky is Falling, Bawden's Carrie's War, Heneghan's Wish Me Luck, and Garrigue's All the Children Were Sent Away. Stalcup takes the reader's heart and mind into various events sharing humor, fear, courage, and community spirit. Thoroughly researched facts in combination with thoughtfully remembered experiences, make this compelling account a great starting point for curriculum dealing with war and a welcome addition to children's and youth's nonfiction collections. This first book of Stalcup's shows the beginning of a new children's writer with great potential.

As Juvenile Literature, I suppose the book isn't bad in terms of its approach; as any sort of history, however, even for the American market, it falls well short because it's riddled with errors of fact and perception. This, despite the uncredited, but apparently heavy, reliance on Angus Calder's "The People's War" (Cape, 1969). It's no defence to claim "this is what I remembered" if the book purports to be a picture of "Growing Up in Wartime England." A better sub-title would have been "the middle-aged memoirs of a sheltered little girl." Stalcup is 20 days older than me and what I remember of WW2 in Britain is somewhat different.

                    Mortgage Insider Information

Whether you need a mortgage to buy a home or are refinancing your current home loan, this new book provides insight on some of the mortgage industry's dirty little secrets.

Authors Clyde and Shari Steiner, who have written this book for the borrower's (not lender's) benefit, explain key mortgage terms and procedures in everyday English.

For instance, the authors explain computerized loan origination, the mysterious FICO borrower rating system, and why even the biggest mortgage lenders sometimes can't deliver loan terms they promise.

The best part of the book is the practical advice, written by authors who have obtained 12 home mortgages. For example, the Steiners recommend applying with two lenders at the same time if closing the loan on schedule is critical.

The message "don't trust lenders" to deliver on their promises comes through loud and clear. Another bit of practical advice is to treat the loan advisor as someone working primarily for the lender, no matter how nice that person might seem.

The book's highlight is the section on individual nationwide mortgage source sites and 800 numbers. It lists virtually all major Internet sites for home mortgage information and making online loan applications to earn discounts. The Steiners rate each mortgage Web site too.

The appendix contains the National Money$ource Director, Loan Evaluation Checklists, Loan Amount Charts, Loan to Value Worksheets, Refinance Evaluator and Where To Get Credit Reports.

Much of the insider information is available nowhere else.
