Customer Reviews:
Best of the crop........2006-03-28
We spent a week in the LA area visiting a long term resident and used this book every day! We wanted to visit both tourist sites and places off the beaten track, and were able to do both. Our family had a diverse list of places to go and things to do - see a star or two, visit hollywood, visit some ethnic areas (such as Little Saigon for an article for chaobannewsletter.com), visit an aquarium, eat family friendly food, hit the beaches, go to an amusement park, etc. It helped us with everything.
My only quibble is that we could have used even more family oriented advice and recommendations.
I looked at five or six guidebooks before picking this one - both because I have used their guides before and because it seemed to do the best job with details and off the beaten track exploration. This definately was the right choice. We used it every single day - to plan, to get to each place and also to eat.
As usual you don't get disappointments from LP.......2005-09-04
This is not the first LP guide that I buy and you could say I really am a regular customer
It was so helpful and useful that my trip without it couldn't have been the same... A must for all LA visitors
Very Helpful.......2005-08-28
These guides are always helpful. There is something for everyone. There's a good mix of everything you could want; from shopping to dinners etc etc. I've always found their books to be 99% acurate (as far as prices etc for sights), and they are well detailed. This book is no different. You'll find your travels much easier with this.

Customer Reviews:
A great city and a great guide.......2006-12-17
Los Angeles is a tough place to see if you aren't with a local but the top 10 guide offers some great suggestions. The restaurants and museums recommend are all top notch. It is clearly laid out and the freeway map is wonderful. Highly recommend in conjunction with the Eyewitness California book.
fun, thorough, useful book.......2005-02-26
I bought several other guide books to LA at the same time I got this one and I have to say, this one's definitely my favorite! It's smart, entertaining and really informative. I've lived here for 3 years & all of the stuff I was familiar with was described accurately, but most importantly, it introduced me to all sorts of great new stuff too. (Oh, I also recommend the book Counter Intelligence as a good guide to the restaurants of LA.)
a local likes.......2003-11-26
I've lived in LA for 5 years and the 1st edition of this book is how I truly got to discover this city. I own around a dozen LA guide books - some general, some specific to topics like food or architecture. If there ever was an all-in-one guide book for LA it tis he LP LA book. Far more detailed than the LA section of the LP California guide, it's full of maps, historical & architecure walking tours, restaurant recommendations, local history, and wacky places of the beaten path.
My only complaint is that future additions weren't as user friendly as the 1st edition. This is basically due to switching from color pages (and color maps) to black and white. The initial "best" of LA list changed, as well. I gave away my new edition and just held onto my old worn copy from '99.
Lonely Planet Star Dims on the Edition.......2003-03-09
I bought this book when I was in Spain to learn a bit about Los Angeles, the Metro System, the people, the places, and what to expect as a whole. I am like many others who REALLY ENJOY Lonely Planet books and make them my first choice when selecting a guide book. But, this edition needs to be redone.
My boyfriend (who has lived here for 10 years, and is a native Californian) was really disappointed in this book. He mentioned how Ms. Schulte-Peevers has completely missed the target audience, people who are coming to Los Angeles to soak up sun, expose themselves to other cultures and learn about the Los Angeles not seen by most. I mean, come on, "from collegen to celluloid" (see cover). How cliché can one be?
There is another layer to Los Angeles. A layer that envolves hard working people and a mind-blowing diversity of cultures, the likes of which is to be found nowhere else in the world.
Most of her comments are only related to where the hip and trendy (I swear to gawd, she actually uses the word "grungster")people are eating, sun-bathing and shopping. She leaves out most of the ethnic culture and cuisine that is here and waiting to be experienced by travellers. She also implies that Compton and Inglewood (South Central) are completely unsafe to visit. This could not be farther from the truth. As with every city in the world, they have places that are thriving and safe and areas that are dangerous.
Her areas visited seem only to be around the Venice Beach area and Santa Monica, not any place north, south, or east of the center of Los Angeles.
The only stars given for this book is the durability. Props to the publisher. The book is stitched to the spine with silk thread. Other guides are only glued.
If you want to know the real Los Angeles, check out the Fodors Gold Guide to Los Angeles and find a local person to show you around. In Fodors, things are organized by catagories and they tell you all kinds of useful stuff, like how to buy the tickets to an Angeles baseball game, eat at a decent restaurant and find the best and least crowded beaches. Admitedly, it is not much more than a phone book, and completely lacks any narative. But, alas, untill there is better, untill there is a travel book that takes note of the incredible mix of peoples and of waiting experiences that are here, it will just have to do :-(
Sorry LP, your star has dimmed considerably over Los Angeles!
great book!.......2000-11-03
This book far outshines the competition. The authors really know their stuff and offer so much more insight than the other glossed-over guides. If you really want the straight dope and have all your stereotypes smashed about Hollywood and Los Angeles, this is the book to use. Great restaurant recommendations, too.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-10-09
This is an excellent and useful book. I'm a little rusty on LA, but I'm looking to go back soon and this will be the book I take with me. The author is remarkably perceptive and intelligent; I almost feel like I know her. Her judgment is impeccable and discerning and her writing is skillful and wise. This book is highly recommended.
Helpful, interesting and easy to use :-0.......2007-09-23
In this great pocket size guide, there is stacks of information. It covers so much to help the tourist out, and for people like me who already know LA so well, it covers lots of little extras such as new restaurants and stores etc in all kinds of different neighborhoods. It covers, Hollywood, Griffith Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Mid City, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Westside, Santa Monica, Venice, South Bay, Downtown, Burbank and Universal Cit and Pasadena. There is info on Orange County too, so almost nothing is left out. It has a great pull out map at the back of the book and with topics about transport and where to eat and what to do, you almost don't need any other guide. I love how they also do mini interviews with locals about their favourite places (even Charlie Sheen's stand in is interviewed about where people hang out).
Any restaurant, hotel or store etc mentioned that has a website has their website listed alongside so you can do further research for yourself, and there are a lot of places mentioned in here that I haven't seen in other guides. With each neighborhood listed in their own color sections, this is really easy to use and it's small enough to take with you on your vacation without weighing you down or taking up space.
I highly recommend this guide. It covers so much in enough detail to give you ideas on where you want to go and what you want to do (and where you want to shop). Both Time Out guides and Lonely Planet are truly the best guides out there and so pick up a copy of this if you want to have a great vacation or try new places when you go back to LA again.
Book Description
To Place Our Deeds traces the development of the African American community in Richmond, California, a city on the San Francisco Bay. This readable, extremely well-researched social history, based on numerous oral histories, newspapers, and archival collections, is the first to examine the historical development of one black working-class community over a fifty-year period.
Offering a gritty and engaging view of daily life in Richmond, Shirley Ann Wilson Moore examines the process and effect of migration, the rise of a black urban industrial workforce, and the dynamics of community development. She describes the culture that migrants brought with them--including music, food, religion, and sports--and shows how these traditions were adapted to new circumstances. Working-class African Americans in Richmond used their cultural venues--especially the city's legendary blues clubs--as staging grounds from which to challenge the racial status quo, with a steadfast determination not to be "Jim Crowed" in the Golden State.
As this important work shows, working-class African Americans often stood at the forefront of the struggle for equality and were linked to larger political, social, and cultural currents that transformed the nation in the postwar period.
Customer Reviews:
A well-researched and insightfully written gem.......2000-12-04
Richmond, California became a World War II boomtown. And almost as quickly as it burst at the seams with shipyard productivity, population surges, and overflowing housing, schools, and day care needs, the boomtown deflated. To a San Francisco-centric mindset, Richmond is no more than a sprawling urban ghetto. But it's a community that deserves more than quick dismissal. As Shirley Ann Wilson Moore writes, "This book examines the history of the African American community in Richmond during the critical transitional years of the first half of the twentieth century. It places the activities of black working-class men and women, regarded by some as unlettered peasants who were spatially and intellectually isolated from larger social currents, at the center of the nation's most profound, transformative events."Published dissertations generally have an awful density about them -- a frustrating compression of stats, dates, and repetitious topic statements. Moore's book is somehow magically void of this while maintaining its scholarly value and dignity. Richly supported by oral histories, the book is unique for telling a community story of California, the American WW2 home front, and the African American experience all at once.Moore's work is an insightful and appropriately succinct package encompassing the exodus of thousands of African Americans from the Jim Crow south to establishment of community, church life, self-sufficiency, war work, blues clubs, prosperity and stability in Richmond -- if not for all, at least for some instead of none. These Richmondites were urban pioneers who laid the basis for the Civil Rights Movement in following generations.
Book Description
This book is a major contribution to the literature focusing on the formation of the South African working class, emphasizing African cultural practices and African resistance as a shaping force. Gathering information from source materials as varied as the James Stuart oral history collection, documents from government and municipal archives, travelers' diaries, settler memoirs, and colonial newspapers, Atkins manages to tell the account of black workmen from their point of view, and whenever possible, in their own words. Thoroughly original and African centered in its approach, this book makes clear that black workers in this period exhibited a set of patterned responses, and were guided by a body of corporate values and shaped by structural practices that unmistakably constituted an African work ethic.

Customer Reviews:
Grant-Writing book recommendation.......2007-09-11
This book is very well-organized, presenting the information in a step-by-step manner that makes it manageable for neophyte would-be grant-writers. I have no doubt that it will serve me well as a continuing resource even as I gain skills and experience.
Helped me through my class!.......2007-05-14
I used this book for a grant writing class I've taken and found it to be a great guide. It's written well and very user friendly. This is definately a book that I'll keep and use through the years when it comes to writing future grants! The resources in the back are helpful and it's fun taking the quizzes and realizing how much I know. Good book...worth buying.
More for organizations than individuals.......2007-04-05
It more geared towards someone writing for grants for a non-profit as opposed to artist/business grants.
Outstanding Guideline.......2007-01-10
Outstanding guideline for anyone needing advice and direction
in regards to writing proposals. Also shows how to present your
group or organization in the best light.
I enjoyed this book.............2006-11-14
This was the first grant-writing book I ever purchased. It has been some time indeed. This is a quality book, but it doesn't provide alot of sources for funding. I would suggest Government Funding and You for a more complete view. But I would very strongly suggest this book.
