5 out of 5 stars Wildflower identification.......2007-06-11

I purchased this book as a compation to Wildflowers of Arkansas by Carl Hunter. I especially like the way this book is arranged; by the color of the flowers. This makes speedy field identification of flowers possible. I also like the quality of the photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the flowers of the Ozarks.......2006-06-12

Found this book to be pretty good. Missing some of the flowers that I have found but handles most and the pictures and descriptions are good for someone who just wants to know what this flowers is.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT GUIDE - HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE.......2005-11-23

I have quite a number of books in my library pertaining to this subject. As an amateur photographer who specializes in flowers, I found this book invaluable for identification purposes as well as general, reliable knowledge of the subject plant being photographed. I carry this one with me in the field. The photographs are of very high quality, the book is well organized and, as far as I can tell, quite accurate in it's written descriptions. Through using this work and a couple of others, I have yet to run across a flowering plant here in Southern Missouri I was unable to identify. Recommend this one highly for those interested in the outdoors in general and flowering plants in particular. Wish we had more guides available of this quality

5 out of 5 stars An excellent wildflower guide for the Ozark region.......2000-06-24

This attractive field guide describes 355 of the most frequently encountered wildflowers in the Ozarks, with photos for each. The Ozark region, shown in a map at the beginning of the book, covers approximately half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas, and the northeast corner of Oklahoma, plus small areas in Kansas and Illinois.

The book is organized by color, and within each color group, the flowers are listed in order of approximate bloom time. In addition to the large photos, which are attractive and excellent for identification purposes, each entry provides a description of the physical characteristics of the plant, its habitat and range, and additional comments. The additional comments often include mention of similiar species to further aid in identification, and uses of the plant - by both humans and wildlife. Scientific names are up-to-date, and any previously used names are given.

I highly recommend this wildflower guide for use in the Ozark region and nearby areas.

    Book Description

Covering approximately 50,000 square miles, the Ozarks is an upland region that spans four states--Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois. In this beautifully illustrated, practical field guide, ecologist and botanist Thomas E. Hemmerly identifies more than 600 species of Ozark flowering plants. Ozark Wildflowers is the only book with full color photographs that covers all flowering plants of the Ozark region, including the Ouachita Mountains and Crowley's Ridge.

Hemmerly's primary focus is herbaceous plants, but he also includes an assortment of trees, shrubs, and woody vines with showy flowers. He conveniently organizes the species descriptions primarily by color and secondarily by the grand group--monocot or dicot--to which they belong. To further assist the reader, Hemmerly has included a glossary, an appendix of Ozark natural areas, a bibliography, and an index.

In addition to serving as an identification guide, Ozark Wildflowers features plants in the context of their environment and the regions where they occur. Hemmerly surveys other plants and animals that form communities with wildflowers and describes the soil, water, climate, and geology that influence Ozark ecology. The author also provides valuable information regarding any medical or ethnobotanical uses of the plants discussed.

              Book Description

The people of India have long known that their ancestors once sailed to and settled in the Americas. They called America Patala, “The Under World,” not because they believed it to be underground, but because the other side of the globe appeared to be straight down. Now, at last, many mysteries about Ancient America, such as the identity of the Mexican Quetzalcoatl, the true origins of our Native Americans, etc., will be cleared up, once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Revelation by Gene Matlock.......2001-02-15

Gene Matlock has done it again. He is one of the few modern historian who is not afraid to speak the truth and keeps revealing ancient secrets of India through his amazing findings. His views runs parallel with several historians and scholars such as Dr. David Frawley, Stephen Knapp, George Feuerstein, Godfrey Higgins, Mark Kenoyer to name a few. This is an excellent linguistic approach by Matlock. I first saw Gene's articles at viewzone.com and since then he has opened new doors for me to Indian civilization. Most people try to discredit him but I would request you not to listen to any, but instead find the truth yourself. THIS BOOK IS WORTH EVERY PENNY and I guarantee you will be surpised by the facts presented in this book. I have no doubt Gene's next book will be another Gem!

1 out of 5 stars Evidence is very weak; not worth purchasing.......2001-01-25

Gene Matlock's book presents a hyper-diffusionist account of how Hindu culture/religion and many features of the Sanskrit language, originally found in Siberia and later in India, allegedly spread from the latter in an early diaspora to groups such as the Biblical Israelites, early Europeans and Amerindians. This, he says, has been obscured by subsequent degeneration in India and the refusal of mainstream scholars to face the evidence.

However, he himself produces little or no solid evidence. Instead he simply invites his readers to see repeated parallels between myths/legends/popular historical ideas involving India and their equivalents elsewhere. He suggests that archaeological and other evidence supports his views, but it is far from clear that this is so. In places Matlock makes wild claims, eg that ancient Indians used powered aircraft. He quotes various Indian and pro-Hindu sources in his support, but most of them are of low credibility.

However, much of his 'evidence' involves an 18th Century approach to historical linguistics. Matlock identifies unsystematic, superficial similarities between Sanskrit/Indic, Hebrew and Amerindian languages. He concludes that Amerindian and other non-Indian languages derive largely from Sanskrit or Kashmiri. But conclusions like this simply cannot be supported with loose evidence of the kind used (as 200 years of scholarship has made plain). Matlock does not even seem to realise that the grammars and phonologies of Indic and Amerindian languages are completely different in type.

And he oversimplifies the debate on Amerindian origins! He contrasts his ideas and a common traditional Amerindian view (ie, the Amerindians were created where they now live). Fringe archaeologists like Goodman and activists like Deloria have supported such ideas against mainstream scientific findings, and it is easy for Matlock to make them appear less plausible than his own views. But he ignores the mainstream views themselves, ie, there was indeed 'diffusion' from the Old World to the New, but at a much earlier date than he proposes and mainly or entirely by land via Beringia (not by ocean-borne expeditions). In addition, it is not clear why Matlock places so much more reliance on traditional narratives if they come from India rather than from the Americas!

Matlock's exaggerated view of his own importance is displayed in a declaration on the fly-leaf of this book. He warns readers, rather bombastically, that the book will 'destroy' their cherished beliefs and pet theories. It will have no such effect on a well-informed reader, of course. But it might mislead untrained readers - and this gives me my only real reason for bothering to review it.

I urge readers not to buy this book (unless it is very cheap, second-hand). But readers who know enough linguistics may at least have a good laugh.

              Book Description

Analysts of international politics have debated heatedly over the likely consequences of the spread of nuclear weapons. Most argue that nuclear proliferation will destabilize the world and increase the risk of nuclear war. Others counter that the threat of nuclear war is enough to convince new nuclear nations to adopt prudent security policies.

In this book, Devin Hagerty examines the relationship between two emerging nuclear powers--India and Pakistan--to assess how nuclear weapons have changed their foreign and military policies. Even before India and Pakistan tested nuclear weapons in 1998, both countries believed that the other was capable of assembling a bomb. In recent years, their respective governments had conducted diplomacy in the shadow of those nuclear suspicions. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since becoming independent in 1947 and their relations remain tense, especially over the disputed border region of Kashmir.

Hagerty presents detailed studies of the January 1987 Indo-Pakistani crisis, precipitated by India's "Brasstacks" military exercises, and the 1990 confrontation over Kashmir. He finds that the two countries nearly went to war in the "Brasstacks" crisis, at least partly because Pakistan's nuclear capability remained nascent. In the 1990 crisis, however, both countries were aware of the possibility of nuclear escalation and acted more cautiously. Hagerty finds little evidence of preparations for preemptive nuclear strikes in the 1990 crisis. Instead, India and Pakistan appear to have embraced the logic of nuclear deterrence. Hagerty concludes that relations between India and Pakistan in recent years support the argument that nuclear proliferation does not necessarily destabilize international relations and may even reduce the risk of war. This conclusion is grounds for optimism about peace in South Asia now that India and Pakistan are overt nuclear-weapons states.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding read.......2000-04-24

The author succiently (204 pages) uses the ongoing Indo-Pakistani conflict as a study to compare and evaluate deterrence theory and non-proliferation theory. Hagerty also adepty explaines the major focal points for this crisis. Perfect for students examining South Asia or aspects of nuclear proliferation.

                  Book Description

The first and only nontechnical method for installing, maintaining, and measuring a comprehensive quality improvement program in your business operation. Special features: Emphasizes throughout that doing things right the first time adds nothing to the cost of a product or service. (What costs, and costs dearly in terms of rework, test, warranty, inspection, and service after service, is doing things wrong). Introduces the proven Make Certain program (the best way known to get management and service personnel participating in the improvement effort). Shows how to recognize and guard against the kinds of problems that can cost your company money, damage its reputation, invite litigation. Proves that quality is a people business, not a ``manufacturing'' function or statistical mystery (note, for example, the chapter on management style to help you improve your personal quality). Illustrated throughout with actual case examples, enabling profit-minded managers to understand and install quality programs in their own operations. Management at all levels: Quality is not only free, it is a supreme source of profit. Quality professionals and company executives: Don't forget that current ``consumer'' and ``environmental'' pressures fall under this quality responsibility. MBA or undergraduate students and company trainees: the basics for specific training programs are included.

Crosby wrote an excellent book that is very useful to managers, quality professional and any individual concerned about quality. The author clearly explains the meaning of quality, which is conformity to requirements. He also shows a useful way to measure quality in terms of cash and not just the usual metrics such as the number of rejects per specified number of units produced. The profits that would flow from producing quality products and services is a good measure. Crosby explains that adopting the cost effective practice of preventing errors will result in avoiding rework, scrap or servicing, which result in increased profits.

The author explains that quality processes should pervade the whole organisation, including areas like public relations or industrial relations, and not confined to customer specific areas.

The book is practical oriented with the author providing some suggestions on how to implement his philosophies in a manufacturing organisation. The book is a bit dated but this does little to diminish the quality of the author's message. The book is applicable to all organisations in any industry, although the author had a bias towards manufacturing enterprises. This is a classic book that is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A work of applied philosophy.......2005-04-15

On of the most basic conflicts in any management is the conflict between quality (do it right) and output (do it fast). Crosby starts our with the typical north American assumption that the two are embroiled in a zero-sum game, and then he blows the lid off - suggesting that by focusing on quality you can increase throughput. For example, by spending tens of thousands dollars on education to *prevent* heart attacks now - spent only on a targeted risk group - a health insurance company could avert heart attacks later, saving a million dollars or more. For a second example, if a manufacturing table has physical waste (scrap) and labor waste (re-work of bad parts), both can be eliminated by having zero defects in the first place, with a net increase in performance.

Crosby also spends a little bit of time talking about how to inspire the workforce to save money with a 'buck a day' program.

Then Crosby provides step-by-step suggestions on how to implement those philosophies in a manufacturing environment. I give the book four stars because it is a little dated, and is heavily oriented toward manufacturing. Still, this is a classic in the quality movement. If you are studying quality, don't go for the five-page summary of Crosby's ideas - go to the source!

5 out of 5 stars The quaility is free ; the real disgrace is not having it !.......2004-10-28

The Quality subject is above all a signal of commitment through the life . The ancient Greeks always told the man crossed the Lethes river and since that moment lost their references and direct hot line with the Cosmos .
The sense of horizontality expresed as the real vehicle of the will, conceived as the last consequence of a unexhaustive fight against the fate is in last instance, what it allows the life be a wonderful experience .
Crosby reminds us over and over the hidden costs of the lack of the Quality considered as overwork, overeffort, waste of the unvaluable time rework ,redesign , manwork , loss of competitivity understood obviously as a serious share in the market.
There is a neglected point but closed related to the quality concept that I would really underline : the question of honor .
The inner honor inmersed in the hero call should be present in our daily behavior , it sounds so distant the term aristos employed by Karl Jaspers in his Paidea that it would be very convenient making a review around these ancient ideas .
And hero and eros are terms very related . How can you love anytthing without knowing it and how can you know it without loving it ? This is the fundamental premise.
The quality makes the difference in every little aspect of our lives . Believe or not the quality is extremely engaged with your bliss . And I still wonder how the most of people ignore this issue , out of his workplace .
Recommendable text all the way !

3 out of 5 stars Good overview of Quality - Too Traditional.......2004-02-05

I will never have the Quality background of Philip Crosby, but I felt strongly that Crosby's approach was long on the old school, prior to America's turnaround in Quality in the Mid 80s.

Look at how American cars have improved in quality over the last 20 years. From our cars just barely holding together in the 80s to the great cars from the big three, all because we used new methods to get to quality.

His methodology is more of the 50s and 60s military style of management. His quality method was inspection after the fact, not elimination of defects before the product is made.

This a good book as a basic study in quality and understanding why managers have the approaches they have. It is traditional and will appeal mostly to 'old school' quality methods.

5 out of 5 stars Quality is not a gift, but it is free........2002-11-16

The author has figured out that it is traditionally difficult to have a meaningful, real-life, factual discussion on sex, quality and other complicated subjects until some basic erroneous assumptions are examined and altered.

"The first erroneous assumption is that quality means goodness, or luxury, so shininess, or weight. We must define quality as conformance to requirements if we are to manage it. The second erroneous assumption is that quality is an intangible and therefore not measurable. In fact, quality is precisely measurable by the oldest and most respected of measurements - cold hard cash", says the author. For example, "It is much less expensive to prevent errors than to rework, scrap or service them".

This book does not only have theoretic approach, but also brings practical value. It offers a quality improvement program that can be installed in any service or manufacturing company.

Philip Crosby's "Quality Is Free", first published in 1979, influences the book "Business @ Speed of Thought" by Bill Gates, released twenty years afterwards. With a bright set of modern case studies, he illustrates the basic concepts presented by Philip Crosby:

                  - There is absolutely no reason for having errors or defects in any product or service.
                  - Basically, we are slow to change because we reject newness.
                  - Transmitting: how you come across to others should not be left to chance.
                  - It is much less expensive to prevent errors than to rework, scrap or service them.
                  - Business is ... communication that we control and utilize. The effectiveness of the business is determined by how well we do that data transmission.

In the same year when the Bill Gates's book was published, Philip Crosby exposes his own case studies entitled "Quality and Me: Lessons from an Evolving Life".
