                      Book Description

From the early Christian era in Europe, Southeast Asia was known as the "Land of Gold." It is a region blessed with a rich diversity of cultures, peoples, and scenery. A Traveller's History of Southeast Asia is a lucid and concise introduction to the histories of the modern states of Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, and East Timor, providing an essential guide for both tourists and the general reader. It spans the history of the region from "Java Man" some one million years ago to the development of the high-tech, skyscraper cities of the new millennium.

Following chapters on the physical environment and the earliest human history of Southeast Asia, the authors carry the reader through the classical kingdoms that produced such architectural marvels as Borobudur in Java and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The book further explores Southeast Asia's growing trade with the outside world from 1500 culminating in colonization by the European imperial powers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The struggles for independence in the last century-which made the modern nations of the region-are discussed in detail, as are the dramatic and tragic events of the post-independence era such as the Vietnam War and the Cambodia genocide. The remarkable successes and failings of the region's recent economic development are highlighted in the final chapter. Above all, A Traveller's History of Southeast Asia shows how the region's soul has been preserved against tremendous external pressures.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Traveller's History of Southeast Asia.......2003-08-06

"Southeast Asia" is in many ways a typical title in this popular British series: a readable and informative introduction to the history of Southeast Asia for students and travelers. The book, again like most in the series, devotes most of its pages to the Common Period (1500 - the present). This is an advantage for the business or political traveler, but a disadvantage for the cultural traveler, since the most interesting and beautiful monuments (Angkor, for example) were built during the earlier Classical Period (500 - 1500), which is discussed only briefly (40 pages out of 340) in this book. So plan on reading other books, in addition to this one, if you want a full view of the panorama of SE Asia's ancient history.

In terms of coverage, the "Traveller's History of Southeast Asia" includes most of mainland and island Southeast Asia, with most attention being paid to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Surprisingly, the Philippines and Burma are not included. I find the latter omission particularly eccentric, given the importance of the monuments at Pagan, and the contention between Burma and Thailand during much of the common period.

The book's authors do a fine job of explaining the causes and effects of major trends in the history of Southeast Asia that begin with the era of Western exploration: patterns of colonialism, the impact of trade and migration, Islam, communism, World War I and II, the Vietnam War, nationalism, the regional consolidation into nation-states, political independence, and recent developments (as of 2001). I was impressed by the authors' even-handedness in describing these often contentious events. Their analysis is clear and knowledgeable, and they have no political axes to grind.

In summary, "A Traveller's History of Southeast Asia" is a good read, and a useful resource, for all who are interested in the post-1500 history of this fascinating and diverse region.

5 out of 5 stars A quick read and a great way to get up to speed on SE Asia.......2003-06-20

I thought this was a super book. The authors have done a great job of synthesizing the history of Southeast Asia into a very readable survey of the region. I would refer this book to any traveller or international business executive needing to quickly get up to speed on the history and culture of the region.

We are planning a trip to south east Asia soon - I found this book in the local library, and after reading it, decided to purchase a copy for myself. The author is an expert on South East Asian affairs and does a great job summarizing the history of the region starting from some quick paragraphs of pre-history to BC, and then details of pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial independence periods. Although a lot of the book deals with colonial influence in the region (hence not heavy on Thailand), it does a fair job of covering the different periods in history and a good summary w/maps at the end of the book.

Quick read and very informative! All SE countries are covered - Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The author of these fascinating reminiscences spent thirty-six years in Siam and Anglo-Siamese life. Coming to Bangkok in 1896 as an entrepreneur and at the age of eighteen, Wood began his career in the Consular Service, ultimately serving as His Majesty's Consul General in Chiengmai by 1932. These charming glimpses into Siamese life from an English perspective are unique and a must for anyone interested in Thailand and its history.

"Gentleman in the Parlour is a supurb book on Maughams travels in Southeast Asia before the second world war. Anyone who carries with them that sence of romance and adventure of when that part of the world did not have the tallest buildings and the best hotels should take this with them as a travel companion, or just enjoy it in an armchair. The highlights are his detailed discription of his trek to Angor Wat. If the reader doesnt already know that Angor Wat is one of the half dozen great man made wonders will be throughly educated. His discriptions of French Indochina (Vietnam) are particularly vivid. Especially Hue`and Haiphong. There are misfits and opiem eaters and wandering expats as well as the hotels he helped make famous. Raffle's, The Oriental and The Strand. This goes in my backpack with "The Quiet American" and "The Great Railway Bazzar." And I travelled this area in 64,73,86,and97. Also Maugham's "On a Chinese Screen" is worth it.

Protected by jungle-covered mountain ranges, the land ruled by the Burmese Court was for a long time jealously guarded by kings who chose to remain aloof from the outside world. With the coming of the Age of Steam, access to the sequested kingdom was much easier, and when it fell prey to British imperialism the country was 'opened up'. Nevertheless, soon after becoming an independent republic the country once more pursued a policy of limited foreign contact. One consequence of such geographical and cultural isolation is that most outsiders are uninformed about the country now known as Myanmar. This anthology contains sequences of fascinating information covering almost four centuries of Burmese history and drawn from travellers' accounts, many of them from rare documents or inaccessible books.

Capturing the many diverse images and perceptions of Java recorded over the last 600 years, this entertaining volume brings together accounts of this enchanting tropical island by thirty-five Western travellers, most of them English or American. Their writings span the years from the earliest
European contacts with the island, beginning with the 1330 impressions of Friar Odoric, to Richard Crithfield's account of his return to Java in 1985. Through their eyes we see the island transformed from a distant realm of wealth and danger into an orderly and prosperous Dutch colony and then, in
the twentieth century, into the center-piece of the Indonesian nation. Over the years, the "Java" that armchair travellers of the English-speaking world came to know was largely shaped by witnesses like Thomas Stamford Raffles, Alfred Russel Wallace, Elizah Ruhamah Scidmore, S.J. Perelman, Frank and
Helen Schreider, V.S. Naipaul, and many others.
With informative introductions that set each passage in context, these tales have much to tell us about the West itself and about its evolving relationship with this populous South-East Asian center of civilization and power, and it with its people.

                                Book Description

The Malay Archipelago is perhaps the most celebrated of all writings on Indonesia. Attracting huge public interest at the time of publication, this two-part work ranks with the nineteenth century's most important travel writing and Wallace's name continues to be inextricably linked to the area.

Wallace was best known for his discovery and description of the faunal discontinuity that now bears his name, "Wallace's Line," extending between the islands of Bali and Lombok and Borneo and Sulawesi, described here in The Malay Archipelago. This led to his theory of natural selection, which was presented to the Linnaean Society in 1858.

For students ages eight to fourteen, the MY AMERICAN JOURNEY series presents a true history of the United States with a cleverly helpful dose of fiction.

Each of these first four books (in a projected series of ten) recounts highlights from the life of a true American founder or social pioneer. But to engage a studentÂ's interest from page one, a fictional narrator--usually a school-age person who somehow knew the main hero--tells the story with youthful vigor.

Adding to Deborah Hedstrom-PageÂ's unique lessons are plentiful illustrations from Sergio Martinez (Max LucadoÂ's You Are Special). Each book also contains study questions for every chapter and other educational helps.

George Washington (1732-1799) was an American Revolutionary War hero and the first president of the United States. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the sixteenth president of the United

5 out of 5 stars A Quick Guide to Venture Capital Thinking.......2006-06-21

This book, one claimed by the publisher to fall into the need-to-read category rather than the nice-to-read, is aimed at giving the businessman the information he needs to know to be able to hold an intelligent conversation with a venture capitalist.

It's a pretty quick and easy read, but the businessman who has gotten his business up to the stage where outside money is needed is probably not a financial type but an engineer, or scientist or perhaps just plain businessman. This book, written from the venture capitalist standpoint, will explain to him such things as how to value a company, verious types of stock, dilution of the ownership, in short, all of the things that will need to be understood when a big time financial deal goes down.

It's not an in depth book, each of these subjects can and has several books describing them 'in depth.' Instead it is a small book that gives you what you need to know quickly.

This author definitely knows his stuff - but even better is author's new product called Negotiating Term Sheets and Valuations in Venture Capital Deals (ISBN 1597010987). It is a 100 minute DVD that has a lot of different material in it that is critical for doing venture capital deals. It also covers specific negotiation strategies and roles and motivations for each key deal participant - which is not covered in this book or the authors other book (Term Sheets & Valuations).

After enjoying his first book, Term Sheets and Valuations, I was looking forward to this one. I regret to say that I found it a big waste of time and a bigger waste of money.

It appears as if the marketing of the book by the pblisher sought to take advantage of his first book by raising the price by 500%, giving the impression that this book was better or more comprehensive. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Solid reference for entrepreneurs.......2005-12-29

'Deal Terms' is a solid reference for entrepreneurs with 'need-to-read' (as opposed to 'nice-to-read') information regarding venture financing deals. I find Wilmerding's interviews with various relevant players (e.g. legal counsellor, venture capitalist, entrepreneur) to be a good differentiator of the book; the quick analysis of actual term sheet is also pragmatic. The 'Valuation' section is relatively generic & is the weaker part of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, practical, and brilliant!.......2004-05-07

I recently finished your book "Deal Terms" and found it extremely
helpful as we are looking into our first round of financing.

This book showed me numerous issues that I would have definitely overlooked or simply not thought of.

Thanks for writing Deal Terms. Definitely an invaluable
                                    reference for anyone in business!
