Including native warm-season grasses in pasture systems makes good ecological sense, and this publication explores the benefits and challenges associated with their use. The uneven seasonal distribution of forage production from introduced cool-season species is a primary factor complicating pasture management, while native plant communities are more efficient at capturing solar radiation.

2 out of 5 stars Recycled Content in a New Package.......2004-12-15

The 2004 Odyssey guide to the Yangzi River seems much larger than its predecessor, and credits a collection of contributors, including authors Judy Bonavia, Richard Hayman, Kevin Bishop, May Holdsworth, Paddy Booz, and photographer Wong How Man.

While at first this may seem like an impressive array of contributors, closer inspection reveals that both the text and photographs are a hodgepodge of earlier works cobbled together into one book. Much of this content was originally produced in the 1980s, and is now terribly outdated, in some cases by about 20 years.

The photos credited to Wong How Man in the 2004 Odyssey guide to the Yangzi actually first appeared in Wong's 1989 book, "Exploring the Yangtze," and many of othese photos were actually taken as early as 1985. What's worse, the 2004 Odyssey guide repeats the mistakes of Wong's 1989 book in mislabeling or not labeling the identity of his photos. In one prime example, the same photo of a brick pagoda occurs in both the 1989 and 2004 books. In the 1989 book the photo was simply labeled as a nameless pagoda somewhere on the Yangzi River. In the 2004 Odyssey guide an attempt has been made to identify its name and location, but unfortunately the information that has been provided is in both cases completely wrong. It is neither in Zhenjiang, nor is it an Iron Pagoda, which should be obvious from even looking at it. One has to look to Eric N. Danielson's Nanjing and the Lower Yangzi (Singapore: Times, 2004) in order to find a photo of this same pagoda correctly identified by both its location and name.

Likewise the text seems cobbled together from many out of print and outdated sources. May Holdsworth's contributions come from her 1987 guide to Jiangsu Province; Kevin Bishop's text comes from his 1989 guide to the Grand Canal entitled China's Imperial Way; and Paddy Booz's content comes from her 1987 guide to Yunnan Province. Even Judy Bonavia's text dates from the first edition of this Yangzi guide published way back in 1985. This makes most of the written content 15-20 years old. The only content that dates from within the last five years is that written by Richard Hayman, whose specialty is only on the Three Gorges section of the river. Even this content may date from an earlier guide to the gorges authored by him in the year 2000. A photo of Captain Hayman standing in the wilds of Shanghai's Pudong New District beneath the Jin Mao Tower skyscraper is not very impressive evidence of any recent explorations of the Gorges.

In conclusion, it's not clear if any of the content in Odyssey's 2004 Yangzi guide dates from more recently than four years ago, and most of it is nearly 20 years old. China has changed considerably since then, making this less than useful as a practical guide of what to see today.

        Book Description

The building of the Three Gorges Dam and the flooding of the Yangzi River have meant that many areas along the Upper Yangzi River will be under water. Many sites along this part of the river have great historical significance and the Chinese government has endeavoured to preserve as much of the country's history as possible by relocating or building dikes for protection.

In this final installment, Eric Danielson takes readers on a journey through these places along the Upper Yangzi. Some have already been submerged and this book probably contains the last descriptions, in the English language, of the new sites as they were. In some cases, Danielson was also able to visit the new sites and offer a comparison. As he does in his previous two books, the author provides up-to-date practical information for exploring the Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi sites, complete with historical details which were previously only available in the Chinese language. This book also includes a list of places where travellers can stay and tips on hassle-free ways of getting around. Readers will come away with insight into the significance of the structures and places that can be found at the Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi River.

5 out of 5 stars City Weekend Magazine Review of the New Yangzi Series.......2005-10-17

Book Review by F.N. from the October 13, 2005 issue of City Weekend magazine published in Beijing and Shanghai.

The New Yangzi River Trilogy Volumes 2 & 3
        By Eric N. Danielson

The final two installations of the Yangzi trilogy, Nanjing and the Lower Yangzi and The Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi, present to the reader one of the most accurate accounts of two fascinating regions of a river that has played a pivotal role in China's long history. Continuing from the first volume's description of Shanghai and the Yangzi Delta, Eric Danielson delves into Nanjing's turbulent history as a southern center of power from the Three Kingdoms Period right through to the Taipings, the Guomindang, it's fateful demise during Japanese occupation and Liberation in April 1949. The book contains such detail on almost every aspect of Nanjing, from city gates, architecture, walls, temples, tombs and parks, that it seems remarkable that the chap is still not stuck down some pit trying to find a monument where first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Hong Wu, might have paused to have his shoe laces tied.

This exactitude continues on what is just short of an epic journey up the Yangzi from Nanjing in Jiangsu Province through Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces. Volume 2: Nanjing and the Lower Yangzi concludes with an interesting commentary on the region's imperial past noting many of the major Treaty Ports and relevant characters involved in trade, enterprise and attempts at converting the natives to something resembling Christianity.

After all the temple hopping we continue upriver with Volume 3: The Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi. This stretch of the river takes us through Hunan and Hubei provinces, The Three Gorges and their ensuing local points of interest and finally to the heart of south-western culture, Chongqing. The first stop is Wuhan. Similar to the other regional capitals dealt with in the previous two volumes, Wuhan is generously described in over 90 pages (most guide-books do this in less than 10), as is Chongqing. The Three Gorges are described in every aspect from Du Fu's former local haunts to the much-talked about Three Gorges Dam project.

This series of books can not be faulted in any way for its lack of detail for Danielson has gone to great lengths to enable the reader to have as much possible information on every aspect of the chosen destinations from Shanghai to Chongqing, leaving absolutely no memorial rock unturned, and includes many remarkable accounts of local history, politics, architecture, art, music, religion and many an anecdote concerning regional personalities of yore. However, sometimes it can be possible to have too much information, leaving little for the inquisitive traveller to discover for him or her self. Perhaps a trifle heavy for a travel book and not quite glossy enough for the coffee table, one wonders as to the exact, intended purpose of the series. Definitive? Absolutely. Travel guide? Try it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars From Wuhan to Chongqing.......2005-04-13

"The Three Gorges and the Upper Yangzi" actually covers the Yangzi River from Wuhan to Chongqing inclusive. It offers rich historical/cultural background joined with practical travel information, colorful photos, and maps.

This third volume in the New Yangzi series starts with a 96 page chapter on the three Wuhan cities of Hankou, Hanyang and Wuchang. This chapter offers the most authoritative history and description of sights in Wuhan currently available in the English language.

After a brief foray into a bend of the Yangzi that passes through Hunan province, including descriptions of Yueyang and Dongting Lake, the book returns to Hubei province by looking at the cities of Shashi, Jingzhou, and Yichang.

The chapter on Jingzhou is especially valuable. This 53-page chapter is the first detailed description of Jingzhou ever published in the English language. Jingzhou has one of the best preserved intact city walls in China, and yet it has been completely overlooked by overseas travelers and all other English guide books.

The bulk of the book, more than 140 pages, covers all three of the famous Three Gorges (San Xia).

After this comes a 37 page chapter on the city of Chongqing.

There are also topical chapters focusing on cultural/historical issues such as Taoism (Dao Jiao), the biography of the Chu statesman Qu Yuan, the Three Kingdoms (San Guo), the history of navigation on the Yangzi River, and a description of the traditional native sailing ships.

In the back of the book can be found a full-length bibliography of English and Chinese sources, an English-Chinese language glossary, and a subject index.

This completion of the three-volume New Yangzi River series by Singapore's Times Media Ltd. clearly makes it an impressive alternative choice to the Odyssey Yangzi Guide, which until now had been the only choice for readers and travelers since it was first published in 1985. No longer can it be said that there is only one choice for those seeking a comprehensive in-depth guide to the Yangzi River.

          Book Description

"Traveling up the rapids of the Yangzi is more difficult than climbing to heaven," said Du Fu in the eighth century. Despite the legendary difficulties of navigation, the river's magnificent Three Gorges have attracted tourists for their grandeur and beauty. In this book, each of the Three Gorges comes to life in a dramatic juxtaposition of the bustling human activity on China's busiest waterway and, soaring high above, breathtaking views of natural monuments that have inspired travelers and artists for millennia.

The Close-Up series is the very first of its kind to give you a fascinating, concise introduction to individual aspects of China and its peoples, past and present. Each topic is presented by chosen experts in their fields who write with brevity for the intelligent reader. Illuminating text is supported by the work of international photographers and with maps and diagrams to give a picture that satisfies curiosity and encourages further reading.

          3 out of 5 stars Three Gorges.......2000-12-05

I like this book more than some of the previous reviewers but I can only offer medium praise. Dr. Cowles is truly an "old China hand" of the first order. His experiences and trials in China, especially his voyages through the Yangtze Gorges before they were "made safe" by demolishing hazardous rocks in the 1950s, the constuction of the Gezhouba dam in the early 80s, and the on-going constucton of the Three Gorges Dam, can be considered an adventure of a lifetime. Having said this, as someone who has travelled through the Gorges over 170 times by ship and by foot (and read nearly everything written about the Gorges), his book is a big disappointment. Before you purchase this book, I would recommend Hersey's A Single Pebble or Winchester's River at the Center of the World if you truly wish to learn about the Gorges. The dialogue in Cowles' book is very contrived and dry. Cowles' recollection of past adventures are stikingly similar to other books written about pre-1950 voyages which leaves doubt in this reader's mind if these are Cowles' experiences at all, or if he is just borrowing from others, given that his voyage was over 50 years ago. The illustrations and some accounts are outstanding, but Cowles' attempt to mold his characters around discussions of the I Ching, each discussion conveniently broken off by some new trial that the crew faces as they negotaite the treachorous rapids of the Gorges, comes up lacking and is not very believable. Unfortunately, the dryness of the dialogue (which I don't believe) and the similarity to other books about the Gorges forces me to give this book a poor rating. Buy the other books first and make your own informed opinion. I would recommend this book third behind other books about the Gorges. With Kemp Tolley's Yangtze Patrol and Diedre Chatham's new book due in March, I would bump this book to fifth.

          2 out of 5 stars three gorges.......2000-06-24

I must agree that the book uses very contrived dialogue which clearly reduces the interest level. With the subject topic, this should have been a dynamic powerful book but winds up forcing the reader to continue in search of something to grab onto. it was dry, very dry, and found lacking - I picked it up because I am interested in anything relating to the Three Gorges area but I was terribly disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Missionary in China.......2000-03-02

This is an honest work, constructed in a thoughtful manner. This book really gave me a feeling for a gritty two-way passage through the Dragon's Mouth in 1946. Cowles, living in China, is a wide eyed missionary in the most turbulent of times, and his perspective is very interesting. This work is highly historic, and has some beautiful pictures and illustrations which bring the work to life.

2 out of 5 stars Contrived dialogue and characters muddy the waters.......2000-01-16

While I do not question Dr. Cowles' love of China, I think his book is poorly written. It feels like it was quickly thrown together in an effort to profit from all the attention surrounding the controversial Three Gorges Dam. This book has too much contrived dialogue and seems to borrow too much from greater books about the Gorges, principally A Single Pebble and Cornell Plant's Glimpses of the Yangtze Gorges. Unfortunately, Dr. Cowles tries to pass off material written by others as his own. He lifts a paragraph from Cornell Plant's book, written over seventy years ago, about a junk owner's wife and reproduces it verbatim. Then to show his complete lack of interest in his own book, he repeats the same paragraph, only slightly altered, two pages later! The book does have good points, but only when Cowles writes about the missionaries does he seem to care. The rest - about the gorges, about the boatmen, about the romance of the river - should be written by someone else.

5 out of 5 stars The best written on the Yangzi Gorges by a great China hand........1999-05-29

Anyone who has gone to China, or who plans to go should make this book a must. Dr. Ben Cowles is an expert of the first order on China in general and the Gorges in specific.

As one who has been to China 67 times since President Nixon was there, few I have met have the knowledge, love, passion and experience for such a book as Dr. Cowles. When you put it down and that is hard to do once you pick it up, you will feel, "I have been there." Dr. Joseph B. Kennedy, Chairman, U.S.China Education Foundation

                Book Description

A fresh and original look at the phenomenon of "cult branding" -- how companies cultivate fanatical customer loyalty.

At first glance, companies like Apple and Nike have little in common with organizations like the Hell's Angels and the Unification Church. But in reality, they all fulfill the main definition of a cult: They attract people who see themselves as different from the masses in some fundamental way. Contrary to stereotypes, most cult members aren't emotionally unstable—they're just normal folks searching for a sense of belonging.

Marketing expert Douglas Atkin has spent years researching both full-blown cults and companies that use cult-branding techniques. He interviewed countless cult members to find out what makes them tick. And he explains exactly how brands like Harley- Davidson, Saturn, JetBlue, and Ben & Jerry's make their customers feel unique, important, and part of an exclusive group—and how that leads to solid, long-term relationships between a company and its customers.

In addition to describing a fascinating phenomenom, The Culting of Brands will be of enormous value to business leaders. It will teach marketers how to align themselves with a specific segment of the population, how to attract and keep new “members,” how to establish a mythology about the company, and how to manage a workforce filled with true believers.

Once a brand achieves cult status, it becomes almost impossible for a competitor to dethrone it. The Culting of Brands will reveal the secrets of fierce customer identification and, most important, unbreakable loyalty.

5 out of 5 stars Getting underneath brands.......2007-10-13

Douglas Atkin is revered as a brilliant account planner for a reason - he is one of the sharpest minds in marketing. I teach this book in my branding class at NYU because I believe Douglas is onto something - in an age where most Americans have been uprooted and lack communal identity, consumers are latching onto brands as a means of self-identification. Sometimes this leads them into classic cult behavior. The nice thing about this book is that Douglas has really done his homework - he's gone inside classic cults like the Moonies as well as religions (the Mormons), the armed forces (the Marines) all the way into brand cults like Apple, Harley Davidson and JetBlue.

5 out of 5 stars The "new" marketing takes on an intriguing face........2006-11-04

Doug Atkin reveals what "cultism" really is (not funny Kool-aid for the mind-numbed) and why we should aspire to having our customers "cult our brand."
He points out the massive changes which have taken place since the Attraction Principle replaced a lot of Spot TV, and helps us evaluate lower-cost options which get big results.

The point of view is valuable and well-presented, the supporting evidence and other argumants are equally well-handled.

If you have customers, and are anything from a sole propriator on up, this book is challenging and valuable.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating expression of brands.......2006-09-09

I must admit, I was at first immensely intimidated by the concept of this book and would not typically have picked it up were it not for my sacrificial duties towards work. I was fortunate enough to have heard Douglas Atkins speak, and was immediately intrigued by the power of his language in referencing consumers devotion towards certain brands. This book sheds an incredible amount of light on modern day cults and the brands you would never imagine would reside beneath that category.

Kudos to Atkins for a well researched book. He draws very compelling parallels between typical cults and brands. The book is very easy to follow and is extremely engaging especially because a lot of the examples he uses are common to our everyday lives, and draw from classic human needs and behaviors. This is definitely an interesting book for anyone inhabiting the marketing/branding bubble although I must say; I did not find his philosophies and recommendations to be a far throw from rudimentary loyalty/CRM principles. It is the perspective and not the solution that wins the four stars.

                1 out of 5 stars A cheap copy..........2005-05-21

I will go straight to the point: This book came out a long time after The Power of Cult Branding, by M. Ragas and B. J. Bueno, in my opinion is just a cheap copy. I read it and it is just a shame to do something like that.

5 out of 5 stars Let Your Customers Help Build Your Business.......2004-11-05

Douglas Atkinks, like Guy Kawasaki and others, have talked about evangelism and viral marketing - make viral marketers - evangelists from your base of satisfied customers. This book illustrates how other brands have succeeded in community building and how our businesses can accomplish similar results.

Clear focused writing - easy to read. Definitely worth 4 hours to read and a lifetime to think about.

I am encouraging others on my staff to read this book and I am recommending this book to my business students on Success.org.
