Book Description
From hanging out on the Pacific beaches of San Juan del Sur and Las Peñitas and shopping for crafts in Masaya to catching up on the ever-evolving nightlife of Managua, Moon Handbooks Nicaragua is the guide to the best the country has to offer, both on and off the beaten path. Practical information includes suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights, plus essentials on dining, transportation, and accommodations for a range of budgets. Complete with details for volunteering and studying Spanish, hiking more than a dozen volcanoes, or strolling down the old colonial streets of Granada and Leòn, Moon Handbooks Nicaragua gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
Customer Reviews:
Like Nicaragua itself--just OK.......2007-01-12
A solid guidebook, but I completely agree with other reviewers that the author often makes places sound better than they truly are. Take Granada: if you go there expecting a colonial jewel in a beautiful setting, like I did, you'll be disappointed. It is, at best, a very poor man's Spain, and that's generous. The book had me convinced I should persuade mi esposa to expatriate there...nope. There's a relatively small district that's quite charming, but even that is far dirtier than it should be considering it's potential for tourism, national pride, etc.
I'm not saying you shouldn't go to Granada, visit Nicaragua, or buy this book. Just don't buy all the hype this book is selling. The author creates high expectations, and if you lose sight of the fact that he's talking about the 2nd poorest country in Latin America you'll be disappointed like me. There are far, far, far better places in the world...maybe I'm just spoiled having visited several of them. If you set low expectations you'll probably enjoy it. We traveled on about $10/pp/day so high standards wasn't an issue, just false expectations. Happy Travels.
"The Good Book".......2006-09-04
Since this is the ONLY guidebook available for Nicaragua, we could have been stuck with whatever they gave us. But this book is quite good. The writing is clever, informative, and thorough. I used it every step of the way while traveling -- for sights to see, food to eat, and places to stay. It was such a companion for the trip, I just refer to it as "The Good Book."
A good, average guide........2006-06-06
Honestly, I only purchased this book because of the lack of options in Nicaragua travel guides. I normaly purchase the DK eyewitness series, or AAA spiral guides, because of their pictures and maps. But, after spending a month in Nicaragua in Jan 06, I definately recommend this book. Alot of the prices are out of date, especially in regards to the hotels and stuff... but the places and locations never change, and the guide is, for the most part, right on.
Moon Nicaragua.......2006-03-23
This is a very good book. I've had other travel books on Nicaragua and Central America and this is, by far, the best. I also found it to be very accurate. I was quite surprised. Outstanding.
helpful guide for budget travelers.......2005-09-04
Contains full details for a budget trip to Nicaragua. Well writen by experienced travelers. Subtle humor and helpful suggestions throughout. A must-have for a solo trip to Nicaragua.

Winning the Chain Restaurant Game: Eight Key Strategies
ASIN: 087584832X |
Book Description
Experts predict that by the year 2000, an astounding 50 percent of all retail sales will pass through a franchise chain. Yet, for all its growing importance, the franchise phenomenon remains largely undocumented and poorly understood, with very little grounded insight available on the management challenges that chains face. Now, with his landmark book Franchise Organizations, Jeffrey Bradach fills this void with a penetrating look at the key factors that shape a franchise's success. Using compelling examples from major restaurant chains, including KFC, Pizza Hut, Hardee's, and Jack in the Box, Bradach extracts the ingredients that make for a thriving enterprise. Clear and engaging, this is essential reading for understanding and managing today's franchise business.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and insightful........2006-04-08
Bradach looks at organizational issues and challenges as they relate to franchise organizations. He particularly focuses on fast food franchises which have a combination of company-owned and franchise restaurants.
He posits the four key challenges of the franchise organization as being:
Adding units
Uniformity
Local responsiveness
Systemwide adaptation
Most of the book addresses how the dual structure of companies with both company-owned and franchise restaurants assists with meeting these challenges. Bradach pays particular attention to the phenomenon of multi-unit franchisees.
Franchise Organizations was exactly what I was looking for in terms of the breadth and depth of knowledge. Bradach writes well, without pretension or overly-academic jargon. The book is bound with three appendices which cover the literature on owning or franchising, the design of Bradach's research, and the role of the field visit.
Recommended for other potential readers with an interest in the area.
Need better research design and deduction.......2002-12-05
This book was written by Dr.Bradach in 1997 but it stills a good reference today.
The comment I have, however, would be the research design is too limited. The research was conducted based on "food resturant chain" but the deduction (including the book title) seems to cover every franchise business. Is it possible that the research results for restuarant business only? We don't know. The research validation of the author still questionable to me.
The selected companies are too subjective, still. Several questions raised while I read the book about other franchise companies that the author didn't select. Although the author indicate three criteria (see research design of the book) to conduct the research, there is no mention to other companies that the author didn't choose.
This book is quite comprehensive but it can be one of the best reference book if the author go more detail (and change the title) for food restuarant business and add more detail about his research design.
Overdone.......2002-09-28
This book has a lot of good information but is buried within very long-winded writing.
MILLENNIUM MARVEL.......2000-06-27
THE BOOK IS A SYNTHESIS OF THE EXACT CORE ISSUES OF FRANCHISING IN AN ENLARGED BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AND IS HELPFUL FOR ORGANISATIONS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE WHO WISH TO ESTABLISH THE CHAIN THROUGH FRANCHISING. THE CASE LAWS REFERENCES COULD BE APPROPRIATELY GEARED UP AS EVERY BUSINESS HAS THESE FOCUSSES DESPITE OTHER ISSUES SUCH AS FINANCE, MARKETING, TECHNICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL.
Very informative and well researched.......2000-01-08
Great in depth research is what first striked me about this book. It has a focus on the restaurant franchise business, with 5 successful examples from the US. The book explains a lot about the details of the organizational work done in the franchise business. I have come up with a useful insight on the whole matter. It is a well written thoroughly researched book and at the same time interesting to read, with chapters and parts divided nicely if you want to go back and forth between subjects. Although I own an non-restaurant franchise, this book helped me understand how the system works and what I should expect from my franchisor in some managerial aspects. I would highly recommend it if you own or think about owning a restaurant franchise, or any other franchise for that matter.

Book Description
The Wassermann Philosophy describes the simple way in which industrial enterprises can achieve considerably greater profits within a few short months. Supply Chain Management achieves a consistently more profitable and faster-reacting organization. More than 95% of the working time in the organization is expended on inventory and customer orders laid up waiting for further processing or shipping. You can imagine the profits that are devoured by the bottlenecks, together with the misplanning which they cause, and the surpluses that occur day after day in your organization. The bottlenecks have to be eliminated! How this can be done successfully is described in this book. To date this path has been followed by more than 60 companies.
Book Description
With the advent of interleague play and the realignment resulting from both the Milwaukee Brewers' jump from the American League to the National League and the creation of Central divisions, many baseball fans cried foul, claiming that their beloved game was being governed by infidels who cared nothing for tradition. These exasperated purists complained that realignment would mean the loss of existing rivalries, that interleague play would cheapen the thrill of the World Series, and that each move would contribute to the loss of statistical continuity. But change, even radical change, is nothing new to baseball.
Arguing that self-alteration is perhaps the national pastime's truest tradition, Russell O. Wright shows that it is customary for management to change not only the rules, but the ball, the franchises, and the stadiums. The author considers the key rules and rule changes, franchise moves, ball modifications, and variations in the player pool, and traces the effects each of these had on the game's statistics. The book includes charts, chronologies, and lists of logically presented statistics.
Customer Reviews:
A Change Doesn't Mean Better!.......2004-01-24
I felt compelled to write this review in response to the author Russell O. Wright opionon that changing of the game is something we have no control over, but I feel likewise. One just has to look at the game today and wonder what it's gonna be like in another 20 years from now. But Mr. Wright does a respectable job in this work and although I feel the sport has change for the worst, fan support keeps growning, but for how much longer I'm not really sure. Baseball has come a long ways from the sport that I knew in the early 60's. I guess the bottom line is there's always gonna be somebody that's has to feel the need for change to make the sport better. But really isn't it all about money and greed? How much longer can Baseball go on with the changes it's made these last 30 years is beyond me. There have been great things happen to baseball but I feel that baseball needs to take a closer look at what has happen to the sport and wonder how much longer can it survive if it keeps going in this direction.

A fitting example fo the Business of Sports.......2004-04-07
Andelman's "Stadium for Rent" gives a great look at the business of pro-sports and the dealings, pains and heartaches of trying to lure pro-sports to any city.
This book chonicles Tampa Bay's quest for Major League baseball as the title suggests, however ti gives the reader a taste of the want and desire of a sports team (in this case, Major League Baseball) over the coldness of observing a team move from one city to the next. It is very easy to think of the greedy owners first and foremost when it comes to chasing the dream of a pro-sports franchise, and it isn't as easy seeing a city's passion for a franchise in a particular sports league, or the hurdles they face chasing that dream.
One can criticise Tampa Bsy for lack of support in regards to the Devil Rays (one of the worst run franchises in pro-sports) but the passion for sports is there in the Bay area. Andelman gives you a taste of it.

Book Description
The virtual organization is a form where only what is used has to be paid for. It has the capability of the real organization, but does not itself have the tangible facilities and permanent employees that is the traditional way of meeting the requirements of customer. It is a concept which gives flexibility, lower overall cost, and reduces the capital needs of a business. It is equally applicable to new and established businesses, and can provide both with a means of achieving success in business development and renewal.
Like others in this series, this book provides a practical guide for managers and entrepreneurs. It shows how those with vision and energy, who do not have the facilities of a large traditional company, can nevertheless achieve success, with no competitive disadvantages. The book shows how to expand and grow without enlarging the organization, and how to gain access to competences without employing more staff.
Well illustrated with case histories and examples, the book reflects the experience of the authors in actually applying the concepts they write about. Checklists and questionnaires are provided where they are helpful. Practical experience is supported by research, and the result is a practical guide to setting up and managing this new form of organization.
'Bo Hedberg is again out in front and leading us into the future of management. Managerial insight and advanced technology are making it possible to create coalitions with the advantages of both markets and hierarchical organizations. In this book, Hedberg and his colleagues explain how these coalitions work and what they need to work best'. William H. Starbuck, ITT Professor of Creative Management, Stern School of Business, New York University
'Professor Hedberg's and his colleagues' pioneering work in identifying and highlighting what makes virtual organizations tick is very timely. The competitive environment in financial services requires that highly motivated professionals voluntarily share their best ideas and dreams with their leaders to ensure customer satisfaction. The authors have rightly identified this crucial point in our success story.' Jan R. Carendi, Senior Executive Vice president, Skandia AB and Chief Executive Officer, Skandia Assurance & Financial Services.
