Book Description
A long-awaited addition to the botany titles in the highly-regarded Collins New Naturalist series, this book covers mosses and liverworts, a group of about 24,000 fairly low-growing plants. This authoritative guide explains their ecological importance, how they can act as environmental indicators and their general biology. With full-colour illustrations throughout, it covers distribution patterns and dispersal mechanisms, their relation with climate, historical uses for mosses, and habitats. This is a branch of botany which has always relied heavily on amateur involvement, and the authors explain what amateurs can do today to increase our knowledge about these essential plants.

Book Description
Dr Watsonâs lucid introduction to British Mosses and Liverworts, first published in 1955, has since become a standard work. The author gives full descriptions and ecological details of over 200 of the commoner or more notable species, illustrating each to show its diagnostic microscopic and macroscopic features, and also provides brief notes on many other species. The introduction on the general characteristics of bryophytes, and the simple terminology (technical terms are kept to a minimum and defined in a glossary) enable a beginner to use the book without difficulty; the keys and habitat lists will be invaluable to beginners and specialists alike. This third edition incorporates a further 26 species and has brought the taxonomy and nomenclature into line with contemporary practice.

A guide to escaping summer heat of Italian tourist cities.......2003-08-15
I used this book mainly to escape the record heat wave which hit Italy and the rest of Europe the summer I took my family there. If you are prepared to go only slightly off the beaten track of tourists, while not entirely missing the attractions of Venice, Florence, and Rome, this book will help lead you to some interesting alternatives in smaller Italian towns.
Rather than spend uncomfortable afternoons sweating through narrow streets, long lines in front of monuments in Florence and Rome, I was able to spend a good part of our time exploring the countryside in the comfort of an air-conditioned rental car.
And this did not distract from some historical and cultural experiences which the bigger and more popular large Italian cities (which I used as a base) offer in terms of museums and monuments.
The book does not cover all the smaller interesting towns, of course. I would suggest adding the town of Vinci in Tuscany, birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, which not only affords a spectacular museum on the artistic and scientific works of this man, but has several wonderful restaurants.
Use this book as a complement to more traditional guidebooks focussing on the bigger cities and major attractions -- and you might find your Italy trip even more rewarding.
Daytrips Italy.......2001-12-13
Your 4th edition of "Day Trips Italy" was
my constant companion in my recent trip
to Italy. I used Florence as my base city for day
trips to Siena, Greve in Chianti and San Gimignano.
You asked your readers to send any comments.
Page 123, you write regarding the Torre del Mangia in Siena's Piazza del Campo:
"the incomparable view presents a dramatic panorama
of the medieval city." You are so correct !!!!
Thanks again for your guide.
My next base city will be Venice, as I explore North East Italy.

Don't go to Italy without this book........2000-04-20
Here's the book you need to explore Italian cities on foot and maximize your travel experience. Detailed maps and directions help you get from point A to B to C etc, seeing all the key places in a logical sequence. The day trips are organized to get you to the attractions at the best times and avoiding crowds. The book could use better quality images and color. Still, it's a must for travelers.

Daytrip bible.......2006-10-25
I am a big fan of Earl Steinbicker's books, and his Daytrips Italy book not only has information on how to do 40 daytrips within Italy (transportation, what to see when you get there, where to have lunch, even small city-center maps) but it includes walking itineraries for Rome itself. You could photocopy just the pages you want to take with you. Highly recommended for daytrip planning and executing.

A helpful and worth having book........2002-07-11
I don't know that I would call this book indispensible - the Eyewitness Ireland tourbook would win that title - but this book was helpful and worth having, particularly when one is stumbling into the car and trying to make some sense out of what one really WANTS to accomplish in a day's touring when one keeps getting sidetracked by interesting graveyards and undiscovered, delightful garden labyrinths. I used this book in some way every day or so during a 14 day Ireland vacation.
best by far !!!.......2002-02-28
If you can only get one travel book of Ireland to plan a trip, get this one. It contains not only the day trips with complete and thorough directions for most of Ireland's highlights, but has unique information lacking in most other guide books - like hours of operation and cost. We were actually able to plan our budget better since ALL costs could be estimated reliably. Used with Lonely Planet (my second choice of books) which has more lower-end lodging recommendations, I could plan a great low cost trip!
One of the Best..!.......2001-11-17
This book was a great help in not only planning my trip to Ireland but a valuable tool while we were there. We basically did a "plan as you go" type trip and were constantly referring to Pat's book as a base from where to start. The city maps that she includes are a great reference for every first time traveller. The only thing that I would have liked to have added in the book was more of her recommendations for lodgings. But on the whole a fabulous reference for everyone visiting the Emerald Isle...!
A Must for Planning a Trip to Ireland.......2001-09-29
Daytrips is an excellent book and a must when going to Ireland. It is very informative, thorough, and user friendly. Pat, the author, has broken the country down into 55 daily trips and in each one she suggests not only a complete set of tour directions and stops but also a list of places to eat as well as "practicalities" or very useful suggestions to make your time enjoyable. She offers an online forum where she will answer any question within 24 hours. Her website also has suggested places to stay that go along with her daytrips. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed her book and have used it extensively to planning our trip to Ireland. It will definitely accomply us there. With all the travel books on Ireland out there, this is by far the best.
Daytrips Ireland in my Carry-on Luggage!.......2001-09-27
Although I read Patricia Preston's "Daytrips Ireland" three times before traveling, I still took the heavily highlighted and underlined book with me. There was just more valuable material in the book than I could memorize. Especially helpful were the pages with little blow-up maps for day trips like through Connemara. Although I thought our meals would be casual, pop-in-wherever we were, I also ended up using the restaurant recommendations. Pat obviously knows the people in the places she recommends.

This book is a meticulously-researched history of professional baseball as told through the stories of the 124 franchises that have comprised the major leagues since 1871.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and informative book on baseball clubs........2006-03-19
Teenagers who love the game (and older folks as well) will enjoy this book. Lots of information and makes interesting reading.
More about the business end of baseball than the game on the field.......2005-09-14
But where else will you find info on every major league club since 1876? (But not since 1871; the National Association is not included.) Top players' season stats are usually given for each team, and say, Hoss Radbourne's 1884 season is discussed in detail, but to me the primary focus seemed on the owners and their machinations. And purposely or not, the owners generally come off as a bunch of money grubbers who seldom had the good of the game at heart. Or maybe that type of owner is just more interesting to write about. One noticeable thing is that because of the many franchise shifts in the 19th century, there are roughly as many 19th century clubs to write about as 20th century. Of course, since many of the 19th century clubs were short-lived, they take up less space on average. Each team's record, where it placed in the league standings, and its managers are given for each year in a table at the end of that team's entry. However, there are no tables of league standings showing all teams at once; nor are there any tables of player performances included anywhere. Some interesting note about players and others are in brief sidebars and footbars.
I debated about rating the book four stars, since it spends so much time on the business end of baseball, but decided to go with five stars, as where else will you find narrative histories of all the major league baseball clubs in one inexpensive book?
Fantastic.......2005-07-05
As a fan of both history and baseball, a book like this appeals to me in two ways. The history of the game as told through the histories of every team, as well as the events of baseball told as how they affected the teams involved. This book lists the histories of every major league professional team. Now there are those who would argue that a league like the Union Association or even the Players League of the late 1800s weren't really "major" leagues, but I'll leave that argument to others. The teams are listed in alphabetical order from the "infamous" Altoona Mountain Citys (who played for a city with the lowest population of any major league team) through the Worcester Brown Stockings of the 1890s NL (who also had a low population).
Each teams' history is given in complete and concise detail, along with any other names the team may have had during their existence, all the stadiums they played at, their all-time won-loss record, a list of their year by year record, and also certain anecdotes (designated by small "boxes") about team historical events. There are also stories and pictures about each team's famous and "infamous" players. There's also histories of the "other" major leagues, like the Union Association, Federal League, Players' League, and the American Association. It's intriguing to see how the movers and shakers of each era operated. One thing also becomes clear: each era of baseball always had its rich and poor teams, this isn't something that just recently started. Another interesting item I noticed was how many MidWest and Eastern cities had a number of different teams in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
At times humorous, at times sad, at times just plain weird, the history of baseball teams reflects society at its best and its worst. This is a book any baseball fan should have.
Great Book, But No Negro Leagues.......2005-04-04
This is an excellent book that will inform even the most diehard fan about the history of every MLB Ballclub. It seems to be extremely comprehensive in its coverage, but that only includes "white" teams. Unless I have overlooked them (which is possible), I couldn't find any coverage of the Negro Leagues. I can't imagine it would have been that hard to include them.
The articles contained within the book vary based on how long the team has been/was in existence. For instance, the Cubs, Cardinals, Yankees and Red Sox have longer writeups than the Mariners, Expos and Orioles.
It gives histories based on the actual team in a certain city and then gives a new history that starts after the team moved (ie Philadelphia A's, Kansas A's and Oakland A's each have their own sections). It also gives separate histories for when a team changes cities and franchises completely (ie the St. Louis Browns to the Baltimore Orioles, or the Washington Senators to the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers). There are also separate histories for the two Washington Senators franchises, as well as tons of short writeups about previous teams in certain cities (ie the Baltimore Orioles - they were a successful team in the late 1890's and then dropped the name for many years until the Browns relocated there).
I have a hard time believing that you will be able to find a more comprehensive book about the franchises that have existed since baseball began. There is more information here for the price than anywhere else that I have seen. I gave it four stars instead of five due to the lack of Negro League teams (even though I admit I could have missed them). All in all, this is one heck of a great buy!!

A Good Introduction to the Basics.......2005-05-17
Note the words "Home Based" in the title of this book. This lets out all the burger-chicken-fish places and limits the choice to those kinds of business that might be done in a home. And wisely, the first page of the book asks the question, Is It Legal. There are an awful lot of restrictions on running a business out of your home. The book points out some common ones, but you need to investigate local laws. Some of the businesses listed in this book wouldn't be legal to run from a home in most places.
After that, up to page 108 in the book is about general rules of running a business and the advantages and disadvantages of a franchise. Advantage: it should be a proven concept that is simply being replicated elsewhere. Disadvantage: you have to run the business exactly as the franchiser tells you.
After that the book lists some generalized information about 300+ franchise operations. Maybe one of them will fit your needs. Note that in their top ten list, eight of the ten have something to do with cleaning.
