                  Book Description

This volume is the most comprehensive and detailed account of seed proteins so far published and the first dedicated volume for a number of years. It covers the major storage protein groups (prolamins, 2S albumins, 7Sglobulins, and 11S globulins), focusing on those present in crops. It also covers other widely distributed groups of proteins including lectins, inhibitors, antifungal proteins, thionins and oil body protein (oleosins). The breadth of coverage of the proteins is wide, including their structures and properties, evolutionary relationships, classical and molecular genetics and mechanisms of synthesis, trafficking and deposition within thecells.
It should therefore become a standard source book for active research scientists as well as for higher level teaching.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-22

It gives some of the basic facts about the western cowboy though the cover and overall presentation is misleading. While the American cowboy remains at the center of the book, enough coverage is given to international cattlemen to technically make this book about cow herders of the world, and not about American cowboys per se.

Had we wanted a book on cow herders of the world, we would have looked for one, but of course, we were looking for a book on American cowboys.

Add to this the problem of the DK staff editorializing the book with many unnecessary opinions, and the book was very disappointing indeed. (Opinions on women being "condemned" to wear skirts, legal guns making the west more dangerous, and the oddest statement I've ever read, that cowboys wore their boots in the fashion that they did because of how proud they were of their small feet?. . . )

Odd statements, and unnecessary and controversial statements aside, the book was worth keeping, though I wouldn not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best cowboy book ever!!!!!!!!!.......2002-04-08

I like this book on Cowboy (Eyewitness Books) & I think it's a cool book & in this book you can see why what an athentic chuckwagon looks like, how an expert ropes a calf, a rodeo rider in action on a wild steer, how a saddle is made & a Mongolian lassoing a wild horse.

Also learn about where wild horses and bulls live in France, why cowboys wear Long Johns, how to tame a bucking bronco, why a gaucho decorates his belt with silver coins.

You can always discover how the cowboy's romantic image influenced music & films & even much, much more ever!!!!

This book reminds me of a video called "Big Comfy Couch: You Can Do it Molly, Black Beauty book illustrated by Susan Jeffers.

This is the best cowboy book ever!!!!!!!!!!!

This is like a new favorite of eyewitness books ever!!!!

                            I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!

                            5 out of 5 stars Yee-haw for your eyes.......2001-01-29

DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other cowboy picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful photos of historically cowboy/cowgirl things, accompanied by informative captions and text.

Learn about American cowboys in the old west (along with cowboys from a few other cultures). See photos of real cowboy paraphernelia, clothing, weapons, etc.!

If you know someone (young or old) who is fascinated by all things cowboy, then you must introduce them to this book! It's a visual crash course in cowboys, and it's excellent!

                                          Book Description

As did the national bestseller Nickel and Dimed, Mike Rose's revelatory book demolishes the long-held notion that people who work with their hands make up a less intelligent class. He shows us waitresses making lightning-fast calculations, carpenters handling complex spatial mathematics, and hairdressers, plumbers, and electricians with their aesthetic and diagnostic acumen. Rose, an educator who is himself the son of a waitress, explores the intellectual repertory of everyday workers and the terrible social cost of undervaluing the work they do. Deftly combining research, interviews, and personal history, this is one of those rare books that has the capacity both to shape public policy and to illuminate general readers.

                                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book about Working Class Lives.......2007-06-06

Mike Rose is a kind of mix between Studs Terkel and Antonio Damasio, the guy who wrote Descartes' Error. In this book he documents the intelligence it takes to do blue-collar and service industry jobs like being a waitress or a hairstylist or a plumber or a welder. While he does this he also pays tribute to his own family, all of whom worked in manufacturing or the service industry. I found the chapter on his mother, a career waitress, especially moving and beautifully written. Rose dispels the notion that blue collar or service industry labor is "mindless" as he provides an inspiring and personal account of the lives of workers -- from the shop floor to the diner to the beauty salon. His discussion of education is wonderful. Rose provides a vision for moving beyond the "skill and drill" approach to education usually doled out to the sons and daughters of the working classes. A terrific read from a writer with deep, first hand knowledge of the lives of America's workers.

5 out of 5 stars Every now and then a book comes along..........2005-01-23

that completely changes your life. This is one of those books. Writing from the heart, Rose probes our society's categorizations of work and the intellect it takes to do all kinds of work. It is deep, powerful and thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars A Seminal Book on Blue Collar Work.......2004-10-01

This book forces you to look at things in a new light. When you hire someone to do some work around the house, cut your hair, or bring food to you in a restaurant; you really don't want someone that's too dumb. Otherwise you house, your hair, or your food isn't right. But we have been conditioned to think that these kinds of workers do not need any brainpower.

In this book, Mike Rose, a member of the faculty of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies grew up in a working class family and witnessed first hand the skills it takes to do the manual work about which he writes.

With that a basis, he begins to look at intelligence in a new, broader sense. Perhaps our traditional IQ tests are wrong. And if we think of these workers, these people as being not too bright, then we shut down opportunities for advancement and it makes you think seriously about how people will vote in the upcoming presidential election.

This is a seminal book. It establishes several points, but it is just a first step. How should we change education to be more meaningful to people who are just as smart but not oriented the same way. Are the traditional three R's simply not applicable? If not, what should we do? We don't want to condemn people who are just slow starters on the traditional path, yet we want to provide the best education possible for all.
