Book Description

Now in its tenth decade of publication, Michigan Trees has been, since it was first introduced in 1913, the must-have reference book for anyone who wants to know about the trees of this unique North American region.
In this new and updated edition, several new species have been added to the lineup, as well as sections on tree ecology and fall color. Written and illustrated in a style that appeals at once to academic botanists and armchair arborphiles alike, Michigan Trees gives readers everything they need to know for identifying trees in the Great Lakes state. Included with each description are fascinating notes and asides (for example, this tidbit on the jack pine: "Parklike or savanna stands in north-central Michigan are prime habitat for the rare Kirtland's warbler that breeds nowhere else in the world."). Also includes a tree key and identification section illustrated with elegantly simple line drawings that reveal the tiny, signature details that make each tree unique.
Burton V. Barnes is Professor of Forestry at the University of Michigan. Formerly a research forester, he is best known for his research and publications in forest ecology and forest genetics.
Warren H. Wagner, Jr. was a world authority on ferns. He had been Professor Emeritus of Botany and Natural Resources at the University of Michigan before his death at the age of 80 in 2000.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Concise Guide to Trees.......2007-01-24

I have been identifying trees since childhood, and have found this book quite useful. It is applicable not only to Michigan, but also to surrounding states (I live in Illinois).

The front of the book includes a summary of basic leaf anatomy. It includes sketches of leaf shapes and leaf margins. There is also a diagram of oak leaves as related to their immediate environment of growth (swampy, etc.). A sketch of inflorescent types is also provided.

The remainder of the book is primarily a key to tree identification. Two pages are devoted to each tree. The left open page is a description of a particular kind of tree. A moderate level of knowledge of botanical terminology is needed to fully comprehend it. The right (facing) open page contains diagrams (not photos) of leaf shapes, flowers, seeds, etc. for the tree being identified.

I did not realize when I ordered this book that it was in black and white illustrations. I would have much more prefered it had colored photos of trees to help me identify them. I considered it a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars nice tree book.......2006-12-22

Pretty decent book, quality paper and covers, informative, a fairly good guide, I would prefer full pictures of trees, which would show the bark, even if only in black and white. If your new to trees this book could be quite helpful and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting & useful!.......2004-05-15

This is a great book both for identification and for planning which trees to plant in your yard. For each tree, not only its size, but also shade tolerance, growth rate, moisture requirements, preferred habitat & other trees that share its habitat are listed. A second book is planned to cover the shrubs & vines, which I am looking forward to.

The final chapters cover aspects of the Michigan climate including the different types of plant communities, vegetation history of Michigan from the glaciers to the present day, length of growing season for different areas, and average temperature & precipitation.

5 out of 5 stars must have for Great Lakes area tree enthusiasts.......2004-02-10

The new edition of Michigan Trees has lots of goodies--including colorized maps of serficial geology and vegetation communities, new species, and information about chromosome numbers for each species. However, the information about shrubs is gone (presumably to be put into a separate volume?), which detracts (slightly) from the book. However, it is still the best guide to trees in the Great Lakes region because of its beautiful line drawings, copious information about habitats, and plethora of identification characters.

My old Michigan Wildflower book was over 25 years old. I thought this one would have much more wildflowers in it. It did not. I was somewhat dissapointed in it.

4 out of 5 stars Revised edition with wildflower walks.......2004-07-10

This book was originally published in 1985, and my copy belongs to the eighth printing in 1999. Its popularity is well-deserved. Author and photographer, Harry C. Lund has spent many years hiking through bogs, forests, meadows, and sand dunes in Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and its off-shore islands in order to put together this book for us. I have yet to find a Michigan wild flower that isn't listed in this guide. The book is well-bound and would easily fit into your backpack for a walk through the wild.

The flower photographs are grouped by color for ease of location. They are then listed in the order in which they appear during the growing season, which is a little trickier to use. I basically start at the beginning of a color group and page through until I find the flower I'm trying to identify. There are generally six photographs to a page, with the text on the facing page. In some cases, the photographs are a bit too small to easily recognize the flower, but when combined with the text there should be no identification problem.

At the beginning of "Michigan Wildflowers in Color," the author has illustrated textual terms such as 'stipules' or 'basal leaves' with a collection of line drawings. The plant descriptions include location, seasonal display, height, and information on whether the flower is protected and should not be picked or moved.

There is a quiz at the back of the book to test your 'flower power.' There is also an 'Observer's List' to keep track of the flowers you do find. Unfortunately, the first entry I wanted to check off wasn't on the list! Perhaps this is because Crown Vetch is not really a wild flower, although its photograph and description appear in the main section of this book.

The author has also mapped out eight wildflower trails in various Michigan habitats, plus the seasonal species of flowers that can be found there.

In total, "Michigan Wildflowers in Color" is a very helpful guide, especially when used in combination with a book like the Peterson "Field Guide to Wildflowers" where the drawings might serve as a confirmation or a backup to Lund's photographs. Leaves in particular are easier to identify through Peterson's drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Michigan Wildflowers in Color.......2002-08-23

I have found this guide extremely helpful in identifying species found near our summer home in Michigan. It has excellent photographs, arranged by color, and a chart showing habitats, seasons, and growing conditions. There is a blank chart for entering your own finds. It is informative and user friendly. I would recommend it highly to both novice and experienced wildflower lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful guide.......2003-09-10

I spent a few weeks in Michigan this summer and found this book to be a helpful guide to the state's wildflowers. I could walk through a field and identify a dozen different varieties in just a few minutes, thanks to this book.

1 out of 5 stars You couldn't go more wrong..........2001-09-24

purchasing a book on Michigan wildflowers. There are numerous inaccuracies throughout the book, and the information is relatively unhelpful. Before purchasing this book, keep in mind this book is part of a "series"; Mr. Tekiela has a book on "Ohio Wildflowers" coming out within a year of this one! I doubt the author has spent time in Michigan looking for these plants, and I'm sure none of the photos are from the state either. This is a money-making deal at best. Purchase any other book on the state's wildflowers and you'll have spent your money in a more satisfying way.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful MI Forest Resource.......2004-04-25

There are few books that offer so much information in such a readable a format. I picked it up thinking that it was mostly a reference book but as I read, I found I was wrong. It is a wonderfully readable blend of history, science and folklore, perfect for preparing to discuss or explain forest issues to others. The authors are not shy about exposing scams and consequences. It is a great book that adds depth for both the recreational reader and the forestry expert. Well researched and thoughtfully assembled.

4 out of 5 stars Scholarly presentation.......2004-06-16

I have used the library's copy for reference around my home. Comparing with other books on this subject, this has more detailed descriptions, with the botanists' technical jargon and line drawings. The plants are organized by plant families. The jargon lends succinctness, but you have to remember the meanings. The drawings show characteristics, often better than photos, but color is omitted. Uses made of the plants, and other interesting information, are given, as well as details distinguishing one species from another. The author gives several common names for those species having multiple names, as well as the scientific names.
This book is better than others for scholarly presentation, but more popular concepts would appeal more to people with casual interest in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Is it Safe for Yanquis in North Carolina?!.......2007-05-19

I was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New Yawk and my husband is from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginny. He wants to move closer to home and I'm a life-long NY Metropolitanite who travels frequently. Seriously, I'm considering NC (not decided yet!) and I found this book very helpful in terms of what to expect, what's what in terms of the terrain and life style. I think this would be a good compromise for the Country Boy and City Slicker.

1 out of 5 stars not a very welcoming book.......2007-04-11

when i was reading this book it was very territorial. god forbid a "yankee" or whatever you call it comes and moves down to north carolina. or if your having a bad day and your new to the community, you need to let the community know so that they know to stay away from you. this book is worthless. my advice dont live near the author cause hes going to be in your business

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2006-11-21

We just moved to NC and I wanted a book "to get my feet wet" this is exactly what I was looking for. Lots of misc facts and history. I felt like I had a better feeling for the place when I got here than I am sure I would have without.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for people who know nothing about North Carolina!.......2006-07-06

This book is a great introductory read for those wanting to know more about North Carolina(especially if you are moving there). It has everything from a history, to the state government, to pop cluture and stories of the state, to even DMV information. I'm leaving a lot out, but you get the picture. The only problem I have with this book is that there is only one map in the entire book. It is of the whole state, but only has nine cities on it. You will want an atlas to go with the book to see where some of the places he mentions are. Other than that a great book and I definately recommend it.

          5 out of 5 stars Finally...........2005-09-27

a book that has all the answers to the questions I've had since moving to North Carolina. It covers a wide range of topics and has so much information - from the state's history to DMV regulations and everything in between. Wish I would have known about this book when I first moved here. I think it's a great book for anyone who is planning on moving to NC or is a newcomer to NC.

          Book Description

In Buffalo Dance, Frank X Walker innovatively blurs the lines between poetry, fiction, and history to tell the story of the infamous Lewis and Clark expedition from the point of view of Clark's slave, York, the first African American to traverse the continent. Breathing lyrical life into an important but overlooked historical figure, these poems vividly present the intricacies of York's personality and form a narrative of his saga—a physical journey from the plantation to the great northwest and a spiritual journey from a humble servant to a man yearning for fulfillment and freedom.

In the narrative fabric these poems weave, York bears the burden of heavy labor as the expedition travels hundreds of miles of waterways in search of a Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, York empathizes with the Native Americans he encounters and joins them in mourning his masters' dominion over the land and their misuse of the Earth's riches. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of the American west that his masters will despoil move York to the realization that "every soft an pretty thing God make / got a hard an ugly to carry with it."

Walker's poetry relates York's bitter tales of his elders' abductions, devastating memories of fleeting moments shared with his wife, feverish dreams of running free with buffalo and flying unfettered over the continent, and imagined promises to family and friends to "return and bring … you wings." Though York remains a slave throughout his travels, Walker endows him with experiences and emotions that liberate his spirit though his body remains enslaved.

At the journey's end, after experiencing life beyond the plantation and gaining insight into nature, freedom, justice, and man's inhumanity to man, York knows that "the search for the treasure / was the real treasure." Walker eloquently conveys these moments of transformation in York's life, and the result is a celebration of the beauty and wisdom of one man's soul.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and Sublime.......2004-11-04

Walker is the rare poet (like Ron Rash or Mary Oliver) who can be overwhelming without being intimidating. The latest collection is wonderful. Each individual poem is a jewel, but the collection as a whole reads like a wonderful novel, and I stayed awake late into the night, reading and savoring each poem because I could not put in down. In York, Walker creates a vision that is honest about both the world he lived in and the one his readers find ourselves inhabiting, with all theglorious and saddening connections between the two. Thanks, Frank.

5 out of 5 stars Read this poet!!.......2004-03-19

I have read many of these poems along with many other of Mr. Walkers and I am amazed with his voice and vision that he puts into words. I was also privileged to be in a creative writing session that he taught. Not only is he a gifted writer, but an excellent teacher as well.
Read this book, read Affrilacha, and look for his new collection coming in October 2004.

                      Book Description

In 1853 explorer Colonel John Charles Frémont invited photographer and fine artist Solomon Nunes Carvalho to accompany his fifth, and final, western expedition. As the official photographer, Carvalho documented the trip from the Mississippi River to Utah with daguerreotypes--a unique and often unwieldy form of photography that produces images on large silver plates. Carvalho was a skilled photographer, but he was a novice on the trail and he battled with the hardships of the journey. He not only was challenged by the physical strain but, as an observant Jew, struggled to maintain his commitment to Judaism, even when observing strict dietary laws meant that he did not eat. Carvalho's own words, from the journal he kept and from letters he wrote home to his wife, provide a vivid firsthand view of his remarkable adventure. With many apt excerpts from his descriptions, author Arlene Hirschfelder has written a detailed account of the life of this little-known, yet widely accomplished, man. EXPEDITION ROSTER, MAP, INDEX.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            1 out of 5 stars Not Wholesale.......2002-01-30

This may be a good book for bargain hunters who are looking for discounted goods, but legitimate wholesale requires a license and a retail resale number.

2 out of 5 stars If You Really Want Wholesale, Look Elsewhere.......2001-03-04

The book's title is rather misleading. While there are some wholesale businesses in the book, they are in the vast minority. If you are a bargain-hunting consumer then you might find this book helpful, although your local yellow pages will probably work just as well. If you are looking for real wholesale resources, check to see if your local library has a directory, or make the $200-300 sacrifice and buy your own. This book was a waste of my time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Bargain Shoppers Dream!.......2001-01-28

Buy Wholesale by Mail lists incredible companies with unbeatable deals. Many companies I've never heard of combined with some well known favorites. I searched through my favorite topics, bookmarked them, looked up listings with websites, and had a fabulous learning experience. From buying chickens and farm items, locating auto parts, or remodeling the house-this book is your ultimate resource guide. Why would you pay more, when you can buy it wholesale? It's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars A must have resource for everything you might want or need.......2001-01-14

Enthusiastically recommended, as a invaluable resource. You will want to buy the latest addition each year!
