Book Description
"I first went to Japan in 1977 and found the whole country ablaze with blossom. I went again in 1979, 1981 and 1984, always at cherry-blossom time. As far as I knew, Japan was always abloom." So says the legendary American photographer Lee Friedlander, whose newest publication presents, for the first time, the complete set of 73 images that the artist made during his four trips to Japan. The groundbreaking black-and-white images--first seen as 25 photogravures in a 1986 portfolio, and long out of print--appear as examples of radical picture-making even 20 years later. Few serious photographers would have dared to photograph cherry blossoms with anything other than color film. The result is a new kind of beauty, with many of the compositions bordering on visual chaos. The images collected here serve as a precursor for much of Friedlander's late landscape work, which was exhibited to great acclaim in his 2005 Museum of Modern Art retrospective. Printed by the laborious dry-trap process, the amazingly sensuous reproductions closely approximate the original prints. This book was produced entirely in collaboration with the artist.

The very best work of a great photographer .......2007-01-11
'Cherry Blossom Time in Japan' is Lee Friedlander at the peak of his considerable powers.
The phrase 'frozen jazz' pops into my head, probably because Friedlander made a living taking photos of jazz greats, but also because these pictures are sweeping, moving, alive.
And yes, they're deeply emotional - at least to me. I have no idea what the photographer felt as he worked, but I can't help but get a great sense of...consolation.
Buy this book and cherish it.

4.5 Stars.......2006-10-01
This is an excellent book if you would like to get an overview and history of Washington DC's Cherry Blossom Festival. There's some really good historical photographs and drawings and it was enjoyable to read about the development, meaning, symbolism, etc. of the Cherry Blossom Festival. I would rate this book 4.5 stars only because while there are some great photos of the spectacular trees there aren't nearly as many as there should be. This is a great book if you are new to Washington and/or looking for a gift.
History of the Cherry Blossom Festival........2005-04-09
The book is very detailed and wonderfully illustrated. It starts with the traditions and roots of Cherry Blossom Festivals from Japan. Then it explians how the cherry blossom trees came to Washington and how the US picked up the traditions of the Cherry Blossom Festival. It ends with a chapter about how to care for cherry blossoms and how they exist, not only in cities of Japan and Washington, D.C., but also in other parts of the US, such as New York and Ohio, Missouri and California. Lovely book.
Funny enough, the book was printed in China.
I have not seen this book, this is what I've read about it.......2005-03-24
Lots of illustrations and facts about the role of the cherry blossom tree in diplomacy and landscapes. Info on the trees' cultivation, how the U.S. got the trees, places outside of Washington, DC to see them.
The author has worked at the Smithsonian and is a resident of D.C.
Book Description
Cherry blossom season is perhaps the most anticipated flowering every spring; the countless festivals are a testament to its perennial popularity. With Cherry Blossoms, award-winning photographer Jake Rajs captures the flower in its natural habitats the world over: from the delicacy of the single bloom to the lush beauty of an entire tree, to the effect of sunlight and water on the blossoms' petals. Supplemented with historical Japanese woodblock prints of the flower and quotes from such writers as Percy Shelley, Mark Twain, and haiku poet Basho, this keepsake volume will delight flower lovers everywhere.

Unimpressive. .......2006-07-21
Being an amateur shutterbug who has taken many photographs of the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin in Washington, I bought this book with a lot of eager anticipation but found myself disappointed. Certainly, there are several photos in the book that are extraordinarily good, but there are also a number of very ordinary images that seem to have been added in as fillers to fatten up the book. Rajis is very good with classical combinations of blossoms and water / blossoms and sky, and the book has some stunning wide-angle shots. Ultimately however, I was left with the kind of anticlimactic feeling you get when you sit down to a fine meal but rise from the table still hungry. The format of the book is partly to blame as well; using a `mini" format for this book means one is essentially looking at an album of 5x7 photos, certainly not a coffee table format that would do justice to the blooms or the panoramic shots. Not much thought seems to have been given either to the poetry verses that dot the book. Most of the photos are from the Tidal Basin in Washington and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in New York.
Wow.......2006-03-06
This is an absolutely beautiful book. I always wondered why a really nice coffee-table book about cherry blossoms did not seem to exist. This book fills the gap. It is a nonstandard size (I think referred to as "mini"), about 6 inches high and wider than a regular book. But I think the size is perfect to show off the cherry blossoms. Page after page of beautiful shots.
Many of the pictures are standard spring-daylight type, although they are all beautiful, but some were taken in the evening as well. A few show the classic "cherry blossom trees by the water" look. There are some reproductions of Japanese prints, and some poetry about cherry blossoms, but mostly this book consists of photographs. Most of the photos were taken in either New York or Washington DC.
A beautiful book; well worth the wait. I've bought several copies to give as gifts. I'm going to check out more of this artist's works.
Customer Reviews:
love it, .......2007-09-17
i loved the book. it has so much in it, from start to finish, it ll help at every stage. i love her idea of enchanting everything. it's so much fun to do that. i also met this author, she is a lovely, nice lady, who seemed very sincere, its hard to imagine her "laughing all the way to the bank" as another reviewer suggested. So about that gardening? well, i have a nearly black thumb, seriously, i had these little seeds that really didnt want to grow, they would wither as soon as they sprouted, or not sprout at all. well they are hardly little sprouts now and are doing great. her stuff is easy to follow, set up in a good format, AND easy for me, the black thumbed beginner, to understand and utilize. i cant wait for the next growing season to start becuase i m going to be a bit more ambitious. theres also recipies in there for getting rid of ants and roaches, keeping fungus from getting your plants and all kinds of things, honestly, even if you throw out all the magickal stuff, theres plenty of good gardening advice, at least seems to me to be.
Another treasure by Dorothy Morrison!.......2007-08-28
This is the perfect gift for the "green-thumbed" Witch in your circle of friends or family, as I'm sure that they will love it as much as I do. I started "magickally gardening" before I got this book, and I almost wish I had waited until getting this book before starting, due to Morrison's ability to inspire the reader to enchant every step of the gardening process. One can tell by reading this that she is VERY much into gardening, and wants to get the reader motivated to feel the same, at least to some extent. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the chapter about Mother Nature's Household - natural ways to remove pests from the home without killing them or using harsh chemicals, and natural housecleaning without the potentially-deadly side effects.
I have quite a few books by Ms Morrison, and this one shines.
all around great information.......2005-09-01
From preparing the soil, to designing the space, to collecting the harvest, and finally to using your herbs, Dorothy Morrison has covered everything. She gave me ideas for planting, composting, and crafting that I had not thought of before. Whether you are a beginning herbalist, like I am, or experienced, I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't find good ideas. I especially liked the fact that the herbal recipes were for cooking, cleaning, crafts, skin care, and other uses.
Delightful, practical and magical.......2005-01-24
I've had this book for some time and hadn't seriously read it till today. Its enjoyable, practical, and well organized. For those looking for more--and for the author to do ALL the work for you, look elsewhere. This is a witch's garden at its simpliest, something I prefer. Who has time for more? The spells and chants are simple, to the point, and yes there are other books out there that are more in depth, but for me... gardening, harvesting and using plants and herbs in my daily magical life IS simple. If you want the plot of a garden, or indept herbal/plant usage, I suggest Cunningham, Rodale's Herbs, or Garden Witchery.
Pot pourri of interesting ideas and good bed time reading..........2004-06-06
Dorothy Morrison's BUD, BLOSSOM & LEAF contains something old, something new and some things borrowed from other gardeners, as well as a good deal of original material based on her own experiences. She combines all these bits of gardening wisdom and lore into a practical but fun book that has more to do with using herbs than growing them. I appreciate the old bits, such as being reminded of the multiple uses of Chamomile, a natural antibiotic remedy and a soothing balm, and new information seldom found in gardening books - such as how to make wine from excess fruit and other plant materials. The best part of her book is entitled "Mother Nature's Household" where Ms Morrison offers ideas and suggestions for everything from `Cleaning with Herbs' to `Herbal Beauty'. She includes recipes for products for the bath and boudoir, as well as the kitchen.
If you are a new gardener, you will probably want to purchase another gardening book that goes into greater depth concerning the care and feeding (growing) of herbs, as Ms Morrison's discussion of gardening techniques is directed to the experienced gardener and, not the novice. There are a number of herbal gardening books on the market, for example Rodale'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS, which is a good place to begin to learn more about herbs. Herbs are generally annuals (Basil, balms, Borage) or perennials (Lavender, Artemisia, Echinacea) so bed preparation is similar to that undertaken for flower gardening. However, every experienced gardener knows not all flowers have the same requirements. For example, if you are going to raise lavender, it helps to know that it prefers dry alkaline growing conditions. Like most flowers, most herbs require lots of sun (many come from the Mediterranean), so you'll have better luck growing herbs on a sunny balcony, than in a shady moist location.

Dandelion Lover Disappointed!.......2005-05-05
I love dandelions and I thought this would be a good book, but I was dissapointed, and after reading the book in its entirety, upset. I found that the author plagerised many parts of her book, especially from the book DANDELIONS ARE FREE By: Joanne Juliette Henry and Stacy L. Wanchisn which was published before a few years before this book. There are even some instances where whole paragraphs are copied. What kind of writer does that and why? The author also does not list a single reference. That was annoying. This book in my opinion is a waste of money and time to read, as there are much better books on dandelions. The only thing that I have to say nice about this book is the illustrations are funky and cute.
Wonderful.......2001-06-21
This fetching little tome is written in praise of that bane of suburban lawns...the dandelion. Not many people realize that the dandelion is not native to North America, but was brought over by the Puritans who could not imagine life without it! This book is written is a psalm of praise of the dandelion, reintroducing it to the American people.
This book contains nutritional facts about dandelions, recipes, dandelion lore, it's herbal uses, poems in praise of the dandelion, and so much more. This book may not make you fall in love with the dandelion, but it will give you a different view of it. I enjoyed this book immensely, and I think that you will too!
A Perfect Gift.......2000-05-13
I just received Dandelion as a gift, and consumed it immediately. From the whimsical illustrations to the clever and personal introduction (I could smell the grass being mowed!), there is information I never dreamed of - although I did a lot of dreaming as a girl making wishes and blowing the puff balls of this ever more interesting plant! I hope to try all the recipes and potions, but mostly can't wait to try the "magic" tucked in between the poetry and enlightenment of these precious pages! This little treasure will be my answer each time I can't think of the "Perfect Gift"!

Customer Reviews:
A great help in taking power back into our own hands.......2004-01-31
The Shakers movement started in the United States with the arrival of nine believers from England in 1774 with the purpose of increasing the work of God and establishing the Millennial Church. They established a large number of villages, many of which have died out, some have been preserved as museums and two continue to operate as active communities. Devoted to creating a more perfect spiritual heaven on earth, the isolated communities with mills, factories, meeting houses and farms offered men and women a secure home where they could perfect their talents for a higher purpose. They were entrepreneurs with an ability to understand trends that allowed them to provide quality goods at competitive prices, one of which was the seed, herb and herbal remedy business - the subject of this book. We are told that: "Every commune, to prosper, must be founded, so far as its industry goes, on agriculture. Only the simple labors and manners of a farming people can hold a community together." Their goal was to live separately from the world and to be self-sufficient, which in turn dictated their land acquisition policy and the establishment of the herb trade that was one of their most successful financial endeavors. Everything made or sold had to be perfect and "The Shakers' seeds and herbs gave the members a reputation as excellent horticulturists. Eventually they mass-produced these products for sale throughout the World, and their businesses evolved and lasted into the twentieth century."
The Shaker physicians were excellent botanists to select the correct plants, understand soil types, weather, pests and when to harvest. To avoid mixing, they collected only one variety of plant at a time, at the peak of its growth, and only the part that was needed. Flowers were taken at their first opening after the dew had evaporated but before the day grew too hot. Great vigilance was required as the gardeners were competing with birds and other wild life. As the demand for their products increased, sales expanded beyond the local area, capitalizing on the need for large quantities of pure, conveniently packaged herbs for the pharmaceutical trade. To meet demand they planted gardens, growing plants under carefully controlled conditions. "For vegetables such as squash, cucumbers and melons, the Shakers cut the pulp out of the skins and put the meat into barrels to ferment. They stirred the mixture for about five days. When the seeds sank to the bottom of the barrels, they rinsed them in sieves. After the seeds dried, the Shakers packaged them for sale." Early in the year hot beds were filled with dung ready for spring planting. By the 1830s they had published their first catalogue offering 137 herbs for sale, followed in 1843 with the Gardeners' Manual with instructions to purchasers for growing their seeds. It is from these records that we have been provided with a book of great knowledge and accumulated wisdom.
Chapter 5 is "Persevering Faithfulness: Creating Your Shaker Herb Garden" with details of a herb tea garden with 18 teas, a culinary herb garden with 23 herbs, a medical herb garden with 25 herbs, a flowering herb garden with 20 herbs, and a fragrant herb garden with 21 herbs. There is information on preparing the soil, starting seed indoors, dividing plants, hot beds, transplanting, starting seed outdoors, cultivation, mulches, pest control, harvesting, storing and preparing the garden for winter. Other chapters tell us about the Shakers' medical practices, cosmetics, dyes and other household uses for herbs. The Shakers' agrarian lifestyle supported their large communities and fitted well with their belief in "hands to work, and hearts to God". Throughout the Shakers' history, their lands supported a variety of profitable enterprises. Today, the benefits of creating a well-kept, healthy garden are still as numerous as they were 100 years ago.
This book is an excellent gift for the avid gardener, a useful guide for those not making full use of the garden space and an excellent reference for those who are considering using their surplus ground to start a small business. The Shakers developed a tremendous amount of valuable expertise that is contained in this book. Their business declined as the big seed companies moved in with more sophisticated advertising and promotion. Today, when our choice of seed varieties is much reduced, when the big seed companies have wrested too much power and impose upon us genetically modified crops, the Shakers would undoubtedly have provided a welcome alternative today. This book is a great help in taking back some of that power into our own hands.
Book Description
For generations, a love of flowers, an understanding of nature, and a knowledge of the secrets of plants has passed seamlessly from mother to daughter to granddaughter. In its deliciously entertaining text and through its beautiful photographs, A TIME TO BLOSSOM captures the essence of childhood.
Whether she is climbing an apple tree, squirming through a proper tea-party visit with an elderly neighbor, dashing to hang a May basket on a friend's door, or sitting crowded and cranky on a Sunday ride with the family, Tovah Martin's childhood memories will captivate the reader. With Richard Brown's glorious photography, A TIME TO BLOSSOM reminds us of the authors' earlier book, TASHA TUDOR'S GARDEN. The text is frank, impish, nostalgic, but never cloying or sentimental. It is a recollection of childhood with all the mischief, the mystery, and the innocence intact.
And for readers who want to enjoy their own mother and daughter flower projects, A TIME TO BLOSSOM is filled with practical instructions: How to make a hollyhock doll; weave a garland; press pansies, bake a scented geranium cake, force bulbs, dry flowers, make rose potpourri, grow a giant amaryllis, and much much more.
Customer Reviews:
True value is in its text........2003-03-01
My mom bought me this book when I had my own little girl. It sat on the coffee table as a showpiece, just because its a beautiful book. What I didn't realize at first was that it reads like a novel, too. Tovah Martin is apparently writing about her own childhood experiences with her mother in the garden, and she does so with eloquence. Her stories make me want to take notes of all the flowers and trees that shaped her earliest memories. She writes about them in such a way that I want them to become a part of my own life. I am now considering buying another Tovah Martin book.
Strikingly lovely!.......2001-12-21
Fully capturing a sense of childhood wide-eyed wonder, Ms. Martin shares with readers now and for years to come her passion for flowers and gardening. Complementing her fine text are photographs of strikingly lovely and beautiful women and girls - a beautiful tribute to mothers and daughters to parallel Ms. Martin's desire for readers to convey their love for blossoms to their own daughters. It's a beautiful book with a beautiful message.
