Book Description

This is an introductory text intended to give the newcomer to this area a comprehensive insight into the science of biotransformations. The book traces the history of biotransformations, clearly spells out the pros and cons of conducting enzyme-mediated versus whole-cell bioconversions, and gives a variety of examples wherein the bio-reaction is a key element in a reaction sequence leading from cheap starting materials to valuable end-products (such as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, fragrances and flavors). The authors cover biotransformations involving the hydrolysis of esters, amides and nitriles, the synthesis of esters and amides, reduction and oxidation reactions and carbon-carbon bond-forming systems. The book finishes with a discussion of some industrially important large-scale bioconversions. The text will be suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals in the areas of biochemistry, organic chemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, and industrial chemistry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent intro to chemistry's future........1999-06-28

Although this book is, by the standards of technical progress these days, "old," it remains flawless in describing not only what was known then, but what remains the bulk of biocatalytic theory and practice now.

Since this synthetic approach has already demonstrated itself to be a cornerstone of so many industries (particularly the pharmaceutical industry) -- and since so many people don't know much about it and yet *fear* it, an understanding such as this book gives could not be more important to everyone -- especially scientists.

The author of this book succeeded in scoring a bullseye on a fast-moving target! Anyone interested in the chemistry of the future -- the chemistry that *already* is essential for perhaps most of our latest drugs should get this book.

One final kudo for this book: it's price is reasonable! Compare it to similar books on technical subjects. This kind of thing usually costs three or four times what this one does.

This book is the most accessible, informative book on a subject that has so far eluded other authors if they meant to speak to anyone but their peers.

Get it. You will not be sorry.

    Book Description

This thoroughly revised and updated Second Edition introduces the basic concepts and principles of plant disease identification and management for food, fiber, and landscape plants. Accessible to those with a limited background in biological science, this book covers four main aspects of plant pathology--how to recognize that a plant has a disease; how to determine the cause of the disease; how to manage diseases; and how to take advantage of the latest in disease management technologies. The authors offer several management approaches, including integrated pest management, biological control, new applications in biotechnology, and the use of chemical pesticides. They provide the techniques needed to prevent and treat diseases caused by nematodes, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasitic plants. Introductory chapters provide a useful review of the history of plant pathology and the development of plant diseases. The Second Edition of Introduction to Plant Diseases meets the needs of growers and pest management professionals, as well as those of extension agents and private consultants in plant disease management. It will be invaluable for introductory undergraduate courses in plant pathology and integrated pest/crop management, and for agricultural institute and technical programs on plant diseases and their management.

                  Book Description

This book is about the microbial species that inhabit the human body, and the consequences of the intimate relationships that we share with them. It is intended that the book will provide an introduction to the normal microflora for those studying disciplines within the health sciences, and for those in the food industry where interest in the microbiology of the digestive tract, especially with respect to lactic acid bacteria, is topical.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars A concise semi-technical intro.......2002-11-19

Your body has approximately 10^13 cells in it. And yet there are approximately 10^14 microbes crawling all over your skin, inside your respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and other, um, 'nether regions'. This is a vibrant and very complex ecosystem we carry around on, and in, us. In the gastrointestinal tract alone there may be over 400 different types of microbes!

Tannock, professor of microbiology, author also of _Medical Importance of the Normal Microflora_ and _Probiotics: A Critical Review_, gives us here an overview of the remarkable preponderance of the indigenous microbiota. The book straddles the line somewhat between a general readership book and a book for students of microbiology, although it definitely leans toward the latter. For the astute layperson, it contains many fascinating bits of information. Indeed, I would like to see Tannock come out with a longer version aimed squarely at the general science readership.

                  Chapters are as follows:
                  1. More than a smell: the complexity of the normal microflora
                  2. Happy Birthday: the acquisition of the normal microflora
                  3. Sticky Microbes: the association of microbes with host surfaces
                  4. Invisible forces: the influence of the normal microflora on host characteristics
                  5. Undesirable company: the role of the normal microflora in disease
                  6. Internal renewal: the potential for modification of the normal microflora

At just over 100 pages, it is a quick read, despite some technical text. References at the end of each chapter are to professional journals and textbooks. Perhaps it is because of the book not catering exactly to a particular category of reader that has made it scarce, but whatever the reason, I had a hard time ordering this book through Amazon and ended up getting it via Kluwer Academic Publishers in Norwell, Mass.

As in his other books, Tannock conveys the interdependencies of our symbiosis with the microflora, and as he says in this Preface:
"Our relationship with the normal microflora provide excellent examples of ecological balances that have evolved between species, and the repercussions that ensue should the balance be tilted in favour of one or another partner. An appreciation of this concept is important for all those who study biological sciences."

                    Book Description

Hancock County is located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, between New Orleans and Biloxi. While its history is intimately connected with that of both cities, it is also unique, with its own independent development. Some of its history's many elements include prehistoric stone-age people, European explorers, extermination of the buffalo, pirates, a naval battle in the War of 1812, Indians, settlers, the county's role in the Civil War, timber barons and their company towns, the testing of Saturn rocket motors, and casino gambling. These stories and many others are told in the book's 35 well-documented chapters. This volume is, by far, the most authoritative history of the county written to date, and should be of value to genealogy buffs as well as those with an appetite for local history. It is a BIG book with over 700 pages and with 100 pictures.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-05-13

This is a wonderful book. It is filled with great stories backed up with referances about Hancock Co.(surrounding counties too) and those who helped make it what it is today. Great for geneology work too.

2 out of 5 stars too many mistakes........2003-11-29

Nothing against Mr.Ambrose, but this book is filled with mistakes. There are books published locally that are better researched. When speaking about the the movie filmed here"This Property is Condemned",he couldn't even get the name right. The book is written in such a way that one can tell that research was lacking.Save your money and do your own research.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes history come alive!.......1999-06-27

This historical volume has been extremely well-researched, well-documented, and well-written. It is an excellent resource for history aficionados, especially those with a focus on Mississippi and Louisiana. It describes the people, places, and events that shaped Hancock County, Mississippi -- on the Gulf Coast -- from prehistoric times to the present.

There are countless interesting (and very descriptive) stories contained in the book; the author's writing style makes you feel like you were there -- this isn't just a "dry" history book. The people and places really come alive through the well-chosen words.

After reading the book and then visiting Mississippi and Hancock County for the first time, I felt like I was already in familiar territory!

                      Book Description

Thousands and thousands of years ago, Stone Age humans learned to make the first simple weapons -- wooden clubs, spears, bows and arrows, and slings -- to hunt for food. Today, we have bombs that could easily wipe the entire Stone Age population with one blow. Award-winning author Milton Meltzer takes readers on a highly selective journey through the evolution of weapons and warfare. In brief, accessible sketches, Meltzer traces the ingenious development of arms from hunting tools to tactical instruments for strategic offence and defense. The provocative, human-interest history will intrigue readers interested in -- or concerned about -- humanity's ongoing drive toward new methods of making weapons and war.
