    Book Description

    INTRODUCTION

Ibiza is an island of excess. Widely acclaimed as the world's clubbing capital, it's a unique and almost absurdly hedonistic place, where the nights are celebrated with tremendous vitality. Thanks largely to the British tabloid press, the popular perception of Ibiza is of a charmless, high-rise party destination, but, while it's true that high-octane techno tourism is central to the local economy, there's much more to the island than the club scene.

Ibiza's scenery is captivating - dotted around its dazzling shoreline are more than fifty beaches, ranging from expansive sweeps of sand to exquisite, miniature coves beneath soaring cliffs. Many of the best beaches were insensitively transformed into functional holiday resorts in the 1960s, but plenty of pristine places remain. Ibiza's hilly, thickly wooded interior is peppered with isolated whitewashed villages and terraced fields of almonds, figs and olives. The cosmopolitan capital, Ibiza Town, has most of the island's architectural treats, including the spectacular walled enclave of Dalt Vila, and a historic port area with hip bars, stylish restaurants and fashionable boutiques. Within easy reach are the small beach resorts of Talamanca and Figueretes, pleasant enough places to spend a day by the sea.

However, for a better selection of beaches, head for the disparate east coast, dotted with family resorts such as Cala Llonga as well as beautiful undeveloped coves like Cala Boix and Cala Mastella, and the slender sands of Aigües Blanques, a naturist beach. The east coast's main town, Santa Eulària is an agreeable but unremarkable place, though you'll find a decent restaurant strip here as well as historical and cultural interest on the Puig de Missa hilltop above the town.

The isolated, remote northwest is Ibiza's least developed region, with a rugged coastline ideal for hiking, the two small resorts of Portinatx and Port de Sant Miquel, and a smattering of spectacular coves including the cliff-backed bays of Cala d'en Serra, Benirràs and Portitxol. Inland, the scenery is equally impressive, dominated by the lofty pine-clad Els Amunts hills; between these peaks lie a succession of diminutive, isolated settlements such as Sant Joan and Sant Miquel, each with its own fortified whitewashed church and a rustic bar or two. Ibiza's bohemian character, rooted in 1960s ethics, remains particularly strong in the north of the island, where you'll find yoga retreats, ethnic bazaars and a large population of hippy-minded residents.

On the western coast, Ibiza's second largest town, Sant Antoni, is no architectural beauty, but can boast a dynamic bar and club scene, plus a selection of mellower chillout bars on its much-touted Sunset Strip, home of the legendary Café del Mar. Sant Antoni's beaches tend to get packed in high season, but west of the town, Cala Conta and Cala Bassa offer luminous water and fine, gently shelving sands. The wildly beautiful south of the island boasts over a dozen beaches, from tiny remote coves like Cala Llentrisca and Cala Molí to the sweeping sands of Salines beach and Es Cavallet on the outskirts of Ibiza Town - two of Ibiza's most fashionable places to pose.

Serene, easygoing Formentera, the other main island of the Pitiuses, is just a short ferry ride south of Ibiza. With few historical sights apart from some sombre fortress-churches and a few minor archeological ruins, Formentera's main appeal is its relaxed, unhurried nature and its miles of ravishing, empty sands that shelve into breathtakingly translucent water. Comprised of two flat promontories linked by a narrow central isthmus, the island is very thinly populated; even Sant Francesc Xavier, the attractive but drowsy capital, is little more than village-sized. Though Formentera is equally dependent on tourism, it's much less developed than Ibiza; its best beaches - Platja Illetes and Platja Migjorn - have barely been touched, and the sole resort, Es Pujols, is a pleasantly small-scale affair.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but needs updating -- Jim Edwards.......2007-08-01

Descriptions are detailed and basically accurate. However, this edition is 3 years old and getting out of date, especially for the club information (Pacha is really past it, for instance). Could use some more photos. Overall, I got my money's worth -- the physical info and rating of beaches etc is essentially excellent. Also, it turned me on to some of Ibiza's history, such as Elliot Paul's Life and Death of a Spanish Town. I only spotted one outright mistake: There is NO beach at Cala D'Aubaurca, although the cliffs there are really spectacular and well worth a vist -- and there will be no one else there.

This guide was excellent, and extremely comprehensive. We went to Ibiza in Sept 2001 for the clubs' closing parties, but managed to hire out a car for a three days and explored the island. You've got to get to Atlantis, an amazingo quarry with weird hippy carving and to some of the beaches in the north. The restaurants recommended in the RG were also very well chosen - check out Bambuddha Grove for Thai food...mmmmm...

3 out of 5 stars Just the Facts.......2001-07-24

As a travel guide, this book succeeds on a superficial level but fails to deliver the "real" knowledge that a traveler to Ibiza seeks. I'd like to insert a caveat here and say that much of the info that an Ibiza traveler is looking for is probably not something that any author in their right mind would put in a book. this book is mostly filled with info on how to book a flight, find a hotel, commute to the clubs or beaches, and where to eat. Great, if you are traveling to the Grand Canyon, or Great Wall of China but I doubt people go Ibiza to do the "tourist" thing. The book did touch on some wild incidents that were reputed to have occurred in the past causing my imagination to run wild. But overall, the book is very basic. I wish the "Let's Go" series would publish a book on Ibiza. They always put in what you want to know.

This is a very interesting and fun book to read. Serious Wild Bill fans will enjoy all of the excellent pictures that help bring Wild Bills life alive. The limited text explains each picture well. People with just a passing interest in the Old West will enjoy this book for all of the original pictures. The pictures diffently speak a thousand words. The book also follows Wild Bills life in a step by step process so you get a good feel for the order of things that happened in his life. This is a must have book for all Wild Bill fans and any Western fan who enjoys period pictures.

    Book Description

Army scout, buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, and impresario of the world-renowned "Wild West Show," William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody lived the real American West and also helped create the "West of the imagination." Born in 1846, he took part in the great westward migration, hunted the buffalo, and made friends among the Plains Indians, who gave him the name Pahaska (long hair). But as the frontier closed and his role in "winning the West" passed into legend, Buffalo Bill found himself becoming the symbol of the destruction of the buffalo and the American Indian. Deeply dismayed, he spent the rest of his life working to save the remaining buffalo and to preserve Plains Indian culture through his Wild West shows.

This biography of William Cody focuses on his lifelong relationship with Plains Indians, a vital part of his life story that, surprisingly, has been seldom told. Bobby Bridger draws on many historical accounts and Cody's own memoirs to show how deeply intertwined Cody's life was with the Plains Indians. In particular, he demonstrates that the Lakota and Cheyenne were active cocreators of the Wild West shows, which helped them preserve the spiritual essence of their culture in the reservation era while also imparting something of it to white society in America and Europe. This dual story of Buffalo Bill and the Plains Indians clearly reveals how one West was lost, and another born, within the lifetime of one remarkable man.

Bridger, decendent of the reknown Mountain man, Jim Bridger, has written an outstanding book on two of history's most colorful and enduring icons of the American west and the dynamic process that each dealt with during the late 19th century America. Bridger is one the best entertainers in American today and this book only shows a small example of his profound abilities. Years of research and documentation of historical events pays tribute to truth, justice, and injustices, of the American West. This book should be a standard fare for all collegiate history classes and for the general public at large. History is always multi-sided and Bridger illustrates that to perfection. This is a must read. It will impress both scholars and the general public. BRAVO MR. BRIDGER! We look forward to the next! Sing on Great Spirit!

For years, Bobby Bridger has been entertaining audiences musically with his Ballad of the West. One of the hour sets, Pahaska, tells the story of Buffalo Bill in what Bridger describes as Homeric ballads. Now, Bridger puts aside the guitar and period garb to show his serious academic side. "Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull: Inventing the Wild West" is the history behind his music. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the old west and is an intriguing look into how the popular vision of it was created.

      Book Description

In 1826 an undersized sixteen-year-old apprentice ran away from a saddle maker in Franklin, Missouri, to join one of the first wagon trains crossing the prairie on the Santa Fe Trail. Kit Carson (1809–68) wanted to be a mountain man, and he spent his next sixteen years learning the paths of the West, the ways of its Native inhabitants, and the habits of the beaver, becoming the most successful and respected fur trapper of his time.
From 1842 to 1848 he guided John C. Frémont’s mapping expeditions through the Rockies and was instrumental in the U.S. military conquest of California during the Mexican War. In 1853 he was appointed Indian agent at Taos, and later he helped negotiate treaties with the Apaches, Kiowas, Comanches, Arapahos, Cheyennes, and Utes that finally brought peace to the southwestern frontier.
Ralph Moody’s biography of Kit Carson, appropriate for readers young and old, is a testament to the judgment and loyalty of the man who had perhaps more influence than any other on the history and development of the American West.

          Book Description

Who more than Buffalo Bill symbolizes the American West? William Frederick Cody (1846-1917) personified, packaged, and perpetuated the myth of the Wild West. This lively biography documents fully the events of his extraordinary career as a buffalo hunter, army scout, freighter, and guide on the Great Plains, and as a showman on two continents. More than 150 fully captioned historic photographs--many never before published--depict Buffalo Bill from his childhood days to his reign as a superlative actor and producer whose Wild West remains unique in the annals of show business. This volume preserves the color and spectacle of a bygone era--and, best of all, shows that that the real and heroic figure rivals the invented and legendary Buffalo Bill.

2 out of 5 stars Pricey Book! Save Your Money and Time!!.......2006-02-26

This book was a complete waste of money and time. I've been in the direct marketing/mail business for 13 years and I'm always looking for new angles to better my business. This guy doesn't seem to know what he is talking about and it makes me wonder if he really has any experience in the mail order business at all.

Here's the deal: If you are serious about making money in mail order or direct response, don't get any of these waste-of-time books that "claim" to show you the business. The ONLY book that I've ever read that can (almost) exactly mirror exactly what I do for my $7-million per year business is a book by Vincent James called The 12-Month Millionaire which you can get on eBay (or type in on a search engine) since it's not a regular published book. The only thing I wouldn't follow in that book is the low priced items he recommends selling like wrinkle creams and weight loss pills (stick with information courses of $199+ with mail order as a RULE, ALWAYS). Lower end products of $99 or less will cause you to lose money in mail order EVERY TIME!!

                    2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2003-02-02

This book is outdated for the 21st century. The basics are there and in great detail but most of the information is useless for today.

3 out of 5 stars Good, if old fashioned, basics.......2001-12-28

Whilst the core business ideas of this book are very sound and there is a lot of very useful and specific information I can't help feeling that it's a bit dated. It needs a big revamp to include the whole Internet world. I also felt that the copywriting examples, whilst they probably still work, are representative of the 50s and 60s rather than the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for entrepreneurs and beginners alike.......2000-03-21

This book gives you an exact idea of what you can do to expand your business, if you an entrepreneur or give enough information to a fresh person to start his/her own business. This is a must buy book for people thinking of becoming self employed or those who have been in business for a long time and need to know the trends of the business world.

2 out of 5 stars Commonsense advice, but author's heros sell dubious products.......1998-07-25

If you believe Cohen, all the people who ever hit it big in "mail-order" did it selling some sort of "how-to" books (Hmmmmmm . . . . .). There is some useful information here, but it is not a guide to becoming the next L.L. Bean or Amazon.com. If you have studied marketing and business in general, you don't need this.
