Simply the best grass book.......2002-01-07
Don't be misled by the title which indicates the central area of research. This book will be useful throughout the remaining grasslands in Texas and neighboring states. For someone who lives in central Texas and who has been looking for an accurate guidebook to native grasses, this book has been a godsend. Dr. Powell and his illustrator, Patricia Manning, have made a book which is scholarly, reliable, attractive, readable and detailed without being overwhelming. Grasses are hard to identify. What better than to know that if I go to "6 mi. below Redford...NW slopes of Wildhorse Mts.... Dog Canyon Flats... Pecos River crossing on Pandale Road" I'll find what I'm looking for. Lots of experts seem to find it hard to communicate with the bungling amateur. Dr. Powell and his collaborator, in contrast, are helpful and clear. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
If you like textbooks, you'll like this book. .......2006-05-13
If you are prepared to invest a lot of time into your guidebook, there is a lot of information contained within Insight's Rome City Guide. It has detailed essays and beautiful photographs of 15 main areas within Rome. That's it for the positive.
Overall, I found the book boring and difficult to use. The key problems are:
1. The good information is buried. It is not the sort of book you can pick up, jump to a section, and get good information. It will take you a while to find what you are looking for, and then you have to read a lot of words.
2. The writing style is very dry - similar to a textbook. All too often when reading this guidebook I drifted off and would lose my place on the page.
3. The maps are difficult to use and hard to read. I never got my bearing of Rome until I bought another book.
I gave up on this book after a while and went and got the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to Rome. The maps are better and it's easier to read. In fact, the DK guides are an absolute pleasure to read.

Product Description
From the 2nd century BC the subject peoples of Italy were motivated by a desire for equality with their powerful sister Rome. At first the Italians hoped that equality could be achieved through the citizenship but, when the Romans proved obdurate, they sought complete independence. Description of the "Social War" that followed forms a central feature of this book, in which Keaveney seeks also to delineate the factors which led to the Italian desire first for citizenship, then independence. He describes the conflict and assesses its outcomes. This 2nd edition has an entirely new preface, highlighting scholarly views put forward since the book's original publication (1987) and bringing the bibliography up to date.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book on the Social War.......2004-01-16
The Social War was one of the great upheavals of the 1st century BC. It killed some 300,000, and reshaped the political map of Italy. Keaveney's books is one of the best to chronical the origins and nature of the conflict. He examines the relations between non-citizen Italy and Rome, noting how Italians were increasingly coveting the Roman franchise in the aftermath of the Punic Wars. He comments on the growing disconnect between Rome and Italy, and the efforts of Flaccus, the Gracchi and Drusus to enfranchise the Italians. With the outbreak of war, he gives a detailed analysis of the campaigns, despite fractured and incomplete records. It is a comprehensive, yet entirely readable book, and is highly recommended.

Book Description
Given the centrality of Africa to Italy's national identity, a thorough study of Italian colonial history and culture has been long overdue. Two important developments, the growth of postcolonial studies and the controversy surrounding immigration from Africa to the Italian peninsula, have made it clear that the discussion of Italy's colonial past is essential to any understanding of the history and construction of the nation. This collection, the first to gather articles by the most-respected scholars in Italian colonial studies, highlights the ways in which colonial discourse has pervaded Italian culture from the post-unification period to the present. During the Risorgimento, Africa was invoked as a limb of a proudly resuscitated Imperial Rome. During the Fascist era, imperialistic politics were crucial in shaping both domestic and international perceptions of the Italian nation.
These contributors offer compelling essays on decolonization, exoticism, fascist and liberal politics, anthropology, and historiography, not to mention popular literature, feminist studies, cinema, and children's literature. Because the Italian colonial past has had huge repercussions, not only in Italy and in the former colonies but also in other countries not directly involved, scholars in many areas will welcome this broad and insightful panorama of Italian colonial culture.

This book presents conflicting opinions by Italian, American, and British scholars on the nature of the unification of Italy. It considers several aspects of the broad question of who deserves credit for the unification. Was unification the result of design or accident? Did the leaders shape the course of events or merely respond to them?

Book Description
This book provides an easy-to-follow introduction to the unification of Italy--the Risorgimento--using a wide range of contemporary documents to guide the student through the topic. A brief general introduction puts the whole subject into context, while each of the chapters contains commentary, and questions to encourage the student to approach the documentary evidence from different perspectives. A variety of original source material is used including letters, speeches, memoirs, and cartoons. This new edition also contains rare and valuable material written by a female American foreign correspondent who was in Europe in the 1840s.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the paper its printed on.......2005-07-31
I purchased this looking for a basic overview of Italian reunification that accounted for recent scholarship. What I got was a string of primary documents connected by useless one to five page historical introductions. I have no qualms about presenting primary evidence, but to simply present it without any analysis or historical commentary is crimminal. I can't imagine what segment of the book market would find this useful. High schoolers need basic historical explanation alongside primary documents. College students need analytic meat. And experts would have no use for such a simple collection of primary material. My only consolation is that I found this used -the new price is scandalous. I am thoroughly disappointed with this publication, not to mention with palgrave, who have done the book world a disservice.

World Class Manufacturing Casebook
ASIN: 0029292700 |
Book Description
In his best-selling book Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, Richard J. Schonberger revolutionized American manufacturing theory and, more important, practice. In that breakthrough book, he revealed that Japanese manufacturing excellence was not culturally bound. Offering the first demystified explanation of the simple techniques that fueled Japan's industrial success, he demonstrated how the same methods could be put to work as effectively in U.S. plants.
Now, in World Class Manufacturing, Schonberger returns to tell the success stories of nearly 100 American corporations -- including Hewlett-Packard, Harley-Davidson, General Motors, Honeywell, and Uniroyal -- that have adopted the famed just-in-time production and "total quality control" strategies. Based on his firsthand experience as a major consultant to American industry, he examines how they did it -- and illustrates how the same concrete, specific steps used by these top companies can be implemented in any factory today. What's more, Schonberger shows that his bold concepts and reforms apply equally to all industries, whether the product is computers, pasta, or trucks, and to all divisions -- from manufacturing and engineering to accounting and marketing.
According to Schonberger, world-class manufacturing depends on blended management -- rather than domination by a separate group of managers -- which marshalls resources for continual rapid improvement. To achieve world-class status, companies must change procedures and concepts, which in turn leads to recasting relations among suppliers, purchasers, producers, and customers. Acknowledging the difficulty inherent in such changes, Schonberger stresses that employee involvement and interaction, both on the shop floor and in the decision-making/problem-solving process, is key. Wary of those who view improvement in terms of modernizing equipment, he points out that making maximum use of people and current machinery is a company's first priority; automation, if necessary, should come much later.
World Class Manufacturing also includes Schonberger's 17-point action agenda to guide innovators toward manufacturing excellence, from getting to know the customer to cutting the number of suppliers, reducing error in production, and deciding when and how to automate.
Indispensable for all manufacturing innovators who aim to keep ahead of the competition, this inspiring, groundbreaking volume does much more than just recommend or theorize about the new manufacturing approach. Plainly, realistically, and logically, it explains how it's done.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-15
Richard J. Schonberger, author of the critically acclaimed book, Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, which revolutionized American manufacturing theory and practices, now examines how world-class manufacturing techniques can be implemented by American corporations. This 1986 classic remains valuable, since manufacturing changes do not happen overnight, and plenty of companies are far from world-class in their approach to efficiency and productivity. Schonberger writes clearly, authoritatively and often amusingly, covering every element of world-class manufacturing in detail. We at getAbstract recommend this book for everyone involved in the manufacturing process, not just mangers and executives, but all employees who seek a context and a future for their work.
If you want to manufacture better-- here you go........1996-05-20
I must say that I first read this because I had to, but onceI did it (really, now) changed my outlook on production. The author details not only the whys of good manufacturing practice, but also the hows and then goes into many case studies to demonstrate that he's not just blowing smoke from his ivory tower. Even better, the stuff works! One division of my company got hooked on the "World Class" bandwagon before it came into vogue. I went to tour their facility and I swore I had walked into Schonberger's book. Anyway, applied correctly, this book can turn your systems upside down and make you more profitable than you can almost imagine (inventory turns over 100? Believe it!). The best thing is that all this happens by developing employees and truly giving the line responsibility for production to the individual line workers. Tough stuff for most companies to even consider, and perhaps my only criticism of the book is that the author doesn't give an accurate picture of how long a transition from "traditional" management to World Class Mfg can require. Our facility worked for six years to get it right, which is actually very good for this transition (he says allow for a 10 year plan in his 1996 sequel, also excellent). Anyway, I'm putting theory into practice in my own mfg line, and thankfully I have this book to guide me. I'm buying copies for everyone in my production team and we'll "go back to school," so to speak. Wish me luck.
