The Lancefield International Symposium on Streptococci and Streptococcal Diseases (LISSSD) is held generally once in every 3 years and this is the XVIth in the series. It is the first time that the Symposium is held in Australia and only the second time in the southern hemisphere. The meeting provides a platform to discuss recent developments in the areas of streptococcus pathogens, host immunity and susceptibility, disease mechanisms, diseases burden, clinical findings, change in epidemiology, comparative epidemiology, novel vaccine and other preventive strategies. The general theme is how multidisciplinary approaches are bringing a greater understanding of an old, but still dangerous pathogen. Streptococcal disease burden is exceptionally high among the Australian Indigenous population. In some ways the epidemiology and disease burden may be comparable to that found in many developing nations.

There's something about the way the story of this tree is tied in with world history that touches me. The pictures are highly appealing. Each two-page spread is almost it's own little story as it tells what is happening to the tree in that time period. So very young children (perhaps 4-6 year olds) can enjoy each little story individually, older children and even adults can connect these stories to the sweep of history.

An unobtrusive but helpful timeline runs across the top of the two-page spreads and builds as the years go by. There is a dinosaur and a reference to 50 million years ago on the first page which young earth creationists should be aware of. The dino is not really part of this tree's story but a mention. The timeline that builds throughout the book starts with 325 BC. and ends in 1969 (yes, one tree's life!).

This book (typically a read in one sitting) would supplement world history, a study of forests, and/or certainly a trip to the redwoods in California! But most of all, it's just a delightful pleasure to read.

It was almost time for my Algebra finals and I was nervous. I got an 80 on the mid-term, so I needed to get an A on the final. So I grabbed this book and it really helped me. The book was so easy to read AND understand. I finished the book in two weeks(which was all I had). I took the final exam and I got a 97! Now I am taking Geometry & Algebra II next year.

Great book for anyone taking a tough Algebra course!.......2003-07-03

I took Algebra over the summer and before taking the class I read this book. It helped me alot. This book gets down to the facts and helps you understand them with practice and examples. For me this book was better than a teacher teaching me Algebra. It was great and helped me alot. I think this should be a required material for all algebra classes; it is better than any textbook. I am taking Geometry next year and I am soon to order Geometry Success in 20 Minutes a Day!

Almost 5 stars.......2003-05-28

This is indeed a good algebra primer, though not without its failings. First the positive. The authors avoid the use of math jargon and long winded explanations that many other academic types use primarily for self-aggrandizement purposes. There are plenty of practice problems, and the lessons are laid out in a logical order. Now the negative. Some of the more difficult concepts are given little attention, while the very simple are given far too much attention. Also, the book should have been edited more closely (there are several typos and at least one repeated paragraph, but these errors are, for the most part, easily recognizable). I have found that books written by teachers are quite often rubberstamped by the people checking for accuracy, but this book avoids one of the worst failings of teacher/authors--the apparent practice of an author simply handing class notes to a publisher, believing their work is infallible. The authors of this book obviously put much thought into this work, and have succeeded admirably. Oh, by the way, "...In 20 Minutes A Day" means absolutely nothing.

Great Book to Refresh Algebra Rules.......2006-03-28

It has been a while since I took a math course. This series of books is excellent. I have the Practical Math book also, and both are excellent. The books seem elementary initially, but that gave me some confident before getting into the more advanced topics.

A SECOND EDITION SHOULDN'T HAVE ERRORS AND TYPOS.......2006-02-23

and this one has a LOT! The word problems are usually poorly written- i.e., "Write an equality and then solve each word problem ... You ordinarily get paid $5 an hour at your part time job. You can earn $10 an hour if you work on a holiday. How many hours would you have to work on Christmas to earn at least $100? Let x = the number of hours of regular hours worked and let y = the number of hours worked on a holiday". Isn't the answer, let's see- y is greater than or equal to 10 (hours)? According to the book though, the setup is actually 5x + 10y is greater than or equal to $100 and the answer is y is greater than or equal to -1/2 x + 10. Unfortunately, sloppy wording is typical of the word problems in this book.
Having said that though, the book explains most concepts carefully and in detail. It has potential in a future edition if someone cleans it up and adds the missing concepts and details.

Pretty Good Book.......2006-01-03

This book was recommended to me by an engineering teacher since he though my algebra was a little weak. There are many errors in the answer key, so the best idea is to learn to check your answers so you don't have to look in the back. It's great tool to use for review though. If you don't second-guess yourself you shouldn't have any trouble using this book as a self-teaching tool.

Lots Of Errors In Answer Key........2005-08-29

There are a lot of errors in the answer key (I have the 2nd edition); since this is a self-study book, the errors can be quite frustrating. The book is also a little bit watered-down, and doesn't cover some topics standard in most algebra texts. For example, factoring cubes is completely uncovered, so are roots larger than squares, and the section on graphing is very limited. The explanations can be a little bit lacking at times as well, and it would have been nice to see the the problems, not just answered, but solved in the answer key, this being a self study book.

On the plus side, it's excellent at teaching the basics and building confidence. It is very well thought out, and the material is presented in a straightforward and logical way. If you are (like me) one of those people who approached math with trepidation, you will probably find this book a Godsend, but beware its shortcomings. And if you are planning on going on to pre-calculus with only this book as preparation, expect to be a little behind most of the other students, because of the concepts this book doesn't cover, or covers in a very stripped down way. Still, despite its faults, I like this book, and think it did its job: got a math-phobic person through basic algebra concepts without too much frustration.
