Great Kid's Book!.......2007-05-16
This is a great kid's book. My six year old daughter is a beginning reader and she loved the book. We grow sunflowers at home so my daughter had some first hand knowledge of the life cycle of growing sunflowers which the author presents so well in photos and text. Get the book for a child and then make a project out of growing a few sunflowers. You will have a blast.

Excellent Reading for Beginning First Grade.......2001-07-26
Gail Saunders-Smith does an excellent job of showing the cycle of growing sunflowers in photos and text. The text is simple and supported by the beautiful, detailed photos which makes it an easy read for beginning first graders. Sunflowers is a well organized information book. It would make a great addition to any child's bookshelf.

Fully updated to keep abreast with the new resorts, restaurants, and attractions in the region, this new updated and expanded third edition offers the most comprehensive and critical review of what to do on the coast. New to this edition: "Chelle's High Fives," a special section that rates the crème de la crème in capricious categories such as martinis, playful beaches, and old Florida funk.
Customer Reviews:
A bible of seasonal wonders and recommendations.......2005-04-14
Now in an updated and expanded third edition, Chelle Koster Walton's The Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples Book: A Complete Guide appears has been informatative revised to reflect the many changes affecting the Florida region. Gulf Coast residents, 'snowbirds' and visitors will find Walton provides a bible of seasonal wonders and recommendations, from wilderness areas and accommodations complete with prices to parks, ice cream shops, and special tours. Many of these byways would be missed by visitors were it not for Walton's specifics, making this third edition of Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples Book a real winner.
A better guide to this area.......2004-04-27
Although this book is not on a par with my favorite DK books, it's one of the better that I have seen on this area of Florida. The author gives a good list of things to do, places to see, where to eat, and where to stay. It lacks the punch and polish of some of the travel books (...), but it gets the job done.
My star ratings:
One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.
Five start - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

Book Description
When Christopher Columbus was young, he worked for his father making cloth. But he did not want to be a cloth-maker all his life. He
wanted to see new lands and have adventures. He wanted to be a sailor! By the time he was 25, Christopher had sailed to France, Africa, and Greece. He had seen strange cities and had many adventures. But his greatest adventure would come when he set out for China and found a whole new world instead.
Customer Reviews:
Good for young readers.......2006-05-27
My 7 year old really liked this, and more generally this whole Landmark series is very good for young readers. Vocabulary and sentence structure are age appropriate. Content is good solid history. As opposed to much of the stuff for this age which is "silly" reading, this series lets them learn something while improving their reading skills.
A Great Read for Kids!.......2000-06-21
I discovered this book while browsing for quality literature to bring to my classroom. I read this book because it fits my third grade curriculum and has a low reading level. Meet Christopher Columbus is an excellent introduction to biographies and explorers. The format of the book allows for less experienced readers to read small parts of his life without being overwhelmed. The language is simple enough for children to comprehend the main idea and details presented without difficulty. The history is accurate and presented in a logical fashion. I recommend this to parents and teachers to help students learn about Columbus as well as improve their reading!

Book Description
The American Book Award winner's long out-of-print, myth-busting poster book, sure to be of interest to the million-plus buyers of Lies My Teacher Told Me.
In Lies My Teacher Told Me About Christopher Columbus, the bestselling author of Lies My Teacher Told Me offers a graphic corrective to the Columbus story told in so many American classrooms. First published over fifteen years ago and long out-of-print, the poster and accompanying paperback book sum up the mis-tellingsand reveal the real storyin a graphically appealing and accessible format.
In vintage Loewen fashion, the poster juxtaposes short quotes from a range of high school textbooks currently in use today, with excerpts from primary sources that clearly show how textbooks have "lied" by knowingly substituting crowd-pleasing myths for grim and gruesome historical evidence.
In fact, these textbooks intentionally omitted every important detail that we do know about Columbus's fateful voyage to the Americas. Among countless other facts, Loewen demonstrates that Columbus and his men were far from the first to set foot in the "New World," and that the peoples he encountered there did not submit to the "god-like" authority of him and his crewmen, but rather to the deadly forms of smallpox and bubonic plague they brought with them from Europe.
In concise, deeply engaging prose, Loewen expands on these little-discussed facts, putting them in the larger context of a discussion of "truth" and revisionist history. Originally published as The Truth About Columbus.
Customer Reviews:
Don't believe everything you read - this book especially..........2003-09-24
One reviewer claims this should be taught in schools - This is just another jewel for revisionist historians. We do not need this type of material to be taught in our public schools. Although the author claims to have used primary sources, his interpretation of these sources should be questioned. Our young children should learn to search for truth, but not be misled by one man's erroneous opinion. Undermining our History texts only teaches students to distrust teachers and schools.
Should be a most read for all history students.......2001-08-30
Everything by the author is well researched, thought provoking, and tells us things we don't want to hear but need to.

Book Description
When Columbus arrived in the New World, he unleashed a set of extraordinary forces of change. He opened the New World to exploration and exploitation, and initiated an exchange of culture, food, language, and disease that was to change the world forever. In this anthology, conquistadors, missionaries, and Indians provide firsthand accounts of events during the period of conquest and colonization, and historians analyze Columbus's legacy.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Younger Students.......2003-05-13
This book gives a nice, organized view of Columbus' achievements. I especially liked how the book made the point that Columbus did not land in what is now the United States, but rather on the island of San Salvador. There are lots of illustrations, and the vocabulary is simple enough that younger students would be able to comprehend the information.
