    Product Description

In this volume, the ninth of the series, treatments are offered for 52 families containing 432 genera belonging to 13 eudicot orders, many of which have recently been newly designed; four families remain unassigned to order. Emphasis is on the early-diverging eudicots and basal core eudicots the phylogenetic relationships and diversification of which have recently been in focus and are critically discussed. Systematically relevant information includes descriptions of families and genera, keys to the genera, and references to recent revisions. Introductions to the families provide convenient, in-depth overviews of key aspects of systematics. The wealth and precision of information contained in this volume will make it an important source of reference for both the scholar and the practitioner in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences.

        -- Quarterly Review of Biology

The culmination of more than fifty years of research by the foremost living expert on plant classification, Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants is an important contribution to the field of plant taxonomy. In the last decade, the system of classifying plants has been thoroughly revised. Instead of describing every individual family, Takhtajan includes descriptions in keys to families, which he calls "descriptive keys." The advantage of descriptive keys is that they give both the characteristic features of the families and their differences. The delimitation of families and orders drastically differs from the one accepted by the Englerian school and from the one accepted in Arthur Cronquist's system. Takhtajan favors the smaller, more natural families and orders, which are more coherent and better-defined, where characters are easily grasped, and which are more suitable for information retrieval and phylogenetic studies, including cladistic analysis (because it reduces polymorphic codings).

            Book Description

This encyclopaedia contains a comprehensive treatment of the taxonomy of the families and genera of ferns and seed plants. The present volume, the fifth in this series, deals with three major groups of dicotyledons, the Capparales, Malvales, and Non-betalain Caryophyllales. The taxonomy of these groups, which comprise 40 families and 752 genera, is based on the results of the most recent research. This is especially true of the families Cruciferae and Malvaceae, to which more than two thirds of the genera treated in this volume belong. The integration of morphological information and the results of molecular studies have led to a revised classification and have opened the way to an understanding of character evolution in these strongly diversified groups.

                Product Description

This volume contains a complete systematic treatment of the flowering plant order Asterales, comprising 12 families with ca. 1,720 genera and about 26,300 species. The order includes Compositae as the largest family of flowering plants. Based on traditional studies, several of the constituent families have long been recognized as being closely interrelated whereas the more recent inclusion particularly of Alseuosmiaceae, Argophyllaceae, Carpodetaceae, Phellinaceae and Rousseaceae is the result mainly of new advances in molecular systematics research. Identification keys are provided for all families and genera, and likely phylogenetic relationships are discussed extensively. The wealth of information contained in this volume makes it an indispensable source for all working in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences.

                  Book Description

Volumes III and IV of this encyclopaedia provide a novel classification of the monocotyledons, a group encompassing plants of most diverse life-forms such as aquatics, terrestrial and epiphytic herbs, and tall trees. Of the 106 families now recognized 104 are treated in the two volumes, while the economically or horticulturally important grass and orchid families are relegated to two subsequent volumes. The classification followed here is based on recent molecular studies as well as on the vast body of information available on this plant group. The wealth and precision of information, but also the keys for the identification of genera and details on their properties, including distribution and diversification, make this work an important source for both the scholar and the practitioner in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences..

                      Book Description

When Barbara Holland inherited her mother's small cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, she quit her job in advertising and moved from Philadelphia to her new home high on a mountain, with only her cat for company. In Bingo Night at the Fire Hall, Holland recounts her adventures and misadventures adjusting to life in a rural community, as her small town adjusts to the inevitable encroachment of suburbia. Whether writing obituaries for the local paper or learning how to handle a chainsaw, Holland shares the triumphs and travails of being a newcomer to an old land with a rich history, a beautiful place sadly losing ground to subdivisions and four-lane highways. Filled with wonderful anecdotes, humor, and insight, Bingo Night at the Fire Hall is a fascinating portrait of a paradisical yet disappearing world.

5 out of 5 stars Charming author in a strange new world.......2007-10-12

When she was in her early 60's author Barbara Holland moved from Philadelphia to Loudon County in Northern Virginia, to a small house in the Blue Ridge Mountains some 60 miles outside of Washington D.C. It might as well have been a different planet. In Bingo Night at the Fire Hall Holland describes the world she came almost by accident to inhabit, a place somehow "unreachably far beyond the headlines and the evening news." Her house on the mountain overlooks a fertile valley in which the same families have farmed for generations. As she describes it, the people there live (or lived, at least, in the 1990s, when she was writing this book) in a sort of time capsule, a Mayberry-like idyll of 4-H clubs and church picnics. It's a place where nobody locks their doors (locking them would seem unneighborly), where people are defined not by their resumés but by their family ties.

Holland approaches her subject from a number of different angles, with chapters on the area's extensive role in the Civil War, for example, and on the weather and wildlife:

"I was pleased and excited to have a bear, until I followed the tracks to the lower porch and considered the remains of the trash bags. Among the strewn litter of crushed cans and coffee grounds the bear, like a psychotic burglar, had defecated copiously."

But what makes the book stand out is her description of the ethos of this place, where families' lives are intertwined over generations and where one is surrounded by one's family:

"On any given day a person in the supermarket could come across his or her entire extended family, one by one, aisle by aisle, pausing to exchange fragments of news among the canned goods. This would horrify city folk, whose relatives tend to get on their nerves, but we're a low-strung lot around here and our satisfaction with our birthplace spreads to include our kin -- or perhaps we consider them one and the same."

It would horrify me, certainly. But Holland writes about this way of life so well that one not only understands it, one almost pines for it:

"Relatives are more useful here than in the city or suburb. They have tools you can borrow. They're someone to call, in a taxiless world, when you need a ride. Someone to leave the kids with or go hunting with; someone to help get your firewood in or your boat painted. Someone to carry your coffin. From cradle to grave, my neighbors here swing in a hammock of family ties and nobody leaves except for the churchyard. Even the few who fled to Florida get carried home in the end."

The book makes clear how much modern lifestyles differ from the way of life that was natural to so many generations before us: small communities of neighbors living off the land, interdependent, clustered around a handful of public buildings--the bank and post office and general store. Nowadays, Holland writes, people don't need towns. They need highways between their work places and their living spaces, with places to shop in between.

At the same time that Holland is celebrating life in her valley, however, she is also recording its demise. The land that fed armies on both sides during the Civil War is yielding--increasingly, inexorably--to strip malls and housing projects. The fertility of the soil doesn't matter if you're only interested in paving it over. One can see through Holland's eyes how this influx of rootless Others is an affront to the land.

Holland, of course, is herself an immigrant, but unlike the housing developers who are carving the valley into subdivisions, she did not efface her surroundings; she adapted to them. Being an outsider also made her a keen observer of the world around her, which we can only be thankful for. I enjoyed Holland's book enormously. It is charmingly written and wise. I'll be seeking out more from her.

4 out of 5 stars Ruminations from the rural/suburban interface.......2007-05-29

During the 1700s and 1800s, as the burgeoning population of the White Man, backed by his relatively sophisticated farming methods and industrial capacity, slowly encroached upon and suffocated the Native American cultures, there must have been those writers who bemoaned the passing of the Noble Savage and his way of life. Here, in BINGO NIGHT AT THE FIRE HALL, Barbara Holland, at the interface of vanishing rural, small-farm America and metastasizing, mall-happy suburbia, performs the same function.

The place is northern Virginia, less than an hour's drive west of Dulles International. Barbara places herself in a mountain cabin inherited from her mother near the village of Pikestown, a short distance from North Hill, at a gap in the Appalachians. After determined inspection of a Rand McNally, I can state with some degree of certainty that these are fictional place names. I suspect her point of view to emanate from somewhere in the Front Royal-Chester Gap-Sperryville arc. The time is the mid-1990s, and Holland herself is perhaps in her 60s.

Those readers who enjoyed Endangered Pleasures: In Defense of Naps, Bacon, Martinis, Profanity, and Other Indulgences and Wasn't the Grass Greener?: Thirty-three Reasons Why Life Isn't as Good as It Used to Be are acquainted with the author's style, which is similar to that of the curmudgeonly Andy Rooney, but without the mean streak. But while the other two volumes deal with specifics, BINGO NIGHT AT THE FIRE HALL concerns itself with a way of life, a more nebulous concept, that otherwise gets lost in the mundane details of everyday living. This life, represented by family farms, local general stores, town meetings, bingo nights, a deeply felt Civil War heritage, local fund-raisers, school Christmas pageants, clean-cut and drug-free adolescents, and an environment where everyone knows everybody else, is giving way to the impersonal, stressed-out, multicultural, politically correct, acquisitive, self-centered and insidiously spreading suburbia created by the maturing post-war Baby Boomers and their spawn. And Barbara, a former big city dweller herself, observes this transition creeping over the ridgeline into her own back yard, and hints at a loss of deeper, traditional values.

This book is unlikely to appeal to the young or middle aged, but to those older who are simply getting old and marginalized. This fact doesn't invalidate Barbara's observations, but rather makes them irrelevant to the newest generations, who will, in time, have their own turn at disenchantment.

2 out of 5 stars Great Writing Ability, However This Holland Book Has Some Problems.......2006-07-11

After reading Barbara Holland's "When All the World Was Young", which I absolutely adored, I immediately had to order another of her books. I must say I was not nearly as enamored of this story. I will say I still think she is a gifted writer. Many of her descriptions are a joy to read. However, I had a couple of problems with this story. First, there actually is little story here. In a few places, the long description of the dedication of the new post office comes to mind, it became so mind-numbingly boring that I skipped ahead a few pages. Second, I became a little confused and frankly less than sympathtic to the main character, Barbara. If she so hates the winters in the mountain, why does she stay there? It's obvious she is miserable much of the year. Also, why live in a rural area where "everyone knows you business" and privacy is, in fact, harder to come by than in the big city, if you are a loner at heart (which she obviously is.) Where are her children? Grown now, but why does she never see them, so it seems, and practically never even mentions them. Finally, I found her criticism of the families in the new subdivisions to be a bit cruel. When I read "When All the World Was Young", I found it to be a delightful journey back to the 1950's, the same time I grew up. But in reading "Bingo Night", which takes place in contemporary times, I began to feel that Ms Holland, in fact, would be happier living in the past. As people grow older, some of us adapt to change better than others. Ms Holland's obvious discontent with modern life in American today suggests that she does not adapt well to change. I so loved the other book! I wish she would give fiction a try, she is such an amazing writer, but I'll not read any more of her nonfiction stories.

5 out of 5 stars A continuous page turning story.......2004-04-25

I am not much of a reader. As usual I was fumbling through the book store on one of those boring family vacations and fell into this book. I could not seem to put it down. This book was very well written and I plan to read all of Barbara Hollands books she is a very creative writer and I would recommend any of her books ( even though I have only read this one ) to anyone.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Local's Review of "Bingo Night".......2002-02-19

Barbara Holland writes about her experiences in moving out to "rural" Loudoun County and about the effect of the encroaching development on the country lifestyle.

I grew up and worked on a farm in western Loudoun. As one of the "locals", I enjoyed her account of the old way of life and it was fun to read about places and people I knew--it brought back a lot of memories. I also enjoyed (and shared) her obvious distaste for the suburbanites who have invaded and taken over Loudoun. That being said, I found her book overly simplistic and highly embellished.Despite her apparent love for the "locals", she understands them only on the most rudimentary level, which is why her analyses are often simplistic.

Readers should be aware that the book is half fiction and half fact. The "Mountain" where she lives is not nearly as inaccessible and remote as she portrays it. Her towns of "Pikesville" and "North Hill" are actually literary conglomerations of several real towns. In addition, Ms. Holland moved to Loudoun in the 1990's. By that point, the County had already been under transition from rural country to suburban life for almost 10 years. Many of the old-timers and old families had long since moved on or passed away. Which is perhaps why she felt the need to embellish the story. However, it was still fun to read about my High School and to recognize the few people and families that she names. All in all it was an enjoyable read. Potential readers should just be aware that it is a work of fiction, with its setting in reality.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Historical Romance.......2007-07-29

Cynthia Owens has deftly created a cast of characters--hero, heroine and secondary players, that quickly become real as she weaves her tale. Siobhan, pronounced Shivaun as the writer cleverly informs us on the first page, is a heroine worthy of the name. She's strong, loving, compassionate; not a lady born, and not perfect, but a real woman, a true heroine. Rory O'Brien is the hero, a man near suffocating from guilt, afraid to love lest he cause more deaths.

Rory returns from America where he's lived since he was eleven, his fortune made, to the village in Ireland where he was born. He goes by another name, hoping no one recognizes him, his plan to use his money to help the village, atoning for the wrongs done by his father and imagined wrongs done by himself.

Rory's past catches up with him, and Siobhan is there to guide him to the light. In the process, there are nail-biting scenes, pages read quickly to find out what's going to happen. The author has a knack for suspense and until the end, you know something bad is going to happen, but you don't know what. Very well done. I enjoyed this book very much, the suspense, the true to life cast of characters, the love and the happy ending. I think you will, too.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Strong Irish Romance!.......2007-01-20

David Burke has a past and it's been a rough one. He used to be known in Ireland as Rory O'Brian but when he left he changed his name and began putting his life back together. But it's time to return to his homeland and face his troubled past and hopefully find the peace his soul so desperately needs. What he finds is not what he expects since a famine has left deep scars in Ballycashel. Will Ireland be the balm David needs or will it be too much for him.

Siobhan Desmond needs to find work in order to take care of her family. The famine hit them hard and when she learns a new master has returned to Ballycashel she seeks employment and instantly feels a connection to the newcomer. David seems angry yet she can see deeper into his heart and knows what he needs is a tenuous connection to something or perhaps someone. Perhaps the healing power of love will tie these two together.

Ms. Owen has penned a very romantic story demonstrating the power of love and how it can heal deep wounds not only for our protagonists, but for the village they call home as well. Ms. Owen was not afraid to add history to her writing therefore making this a well rounded read. This is one author I plan on keeping my eye on.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the Heart!.......2006-12-28

In the wee town of Ballycashel, Ireland, 1850, Rory O'Brian, now known as David Burke, has returned to the site of his tortured past. Determination to right many wrongs drives him back to the people and land that once laid witness to the very things that drove him away. For years he has hidden from what happened, but now he seeks a little dram of peace for his soul and a place he can claim for himself and his daughter Kathryn.

But the town is far from over the scars cast upon it while he lived there as a boy. Still reemerging from the terrible waist of the infamous Great Famine, Ballycashel itself is in need of a healing as well. When their old master passes and this new one takes the reins, many are looking upon Burke with a knowing eye. Siobhan Desmond knows not why the brooding man attracts her so, but she feels in her heart he is a good person, despite her experiences with the old master. Like all residents of the town, her heart is still healing and she and Burke begin a tenuous dance as old as time--one of love and all the promise it holds in its grasp, if only they would seize it. Can Burke find a way back to the land that was always waiting to welcome him and let go of painful secrets? Danger is only a stones throw away and he and Siobhan will have to find a way to fight without sacrificing their hearts.

Many heartfelt sighs were wrenched from me as Burke and Siobhan's story unfurled. Author Owens pens in loving detail all that is dear to not only this couple, but the town itself as well. Their coming together is a catalyst that unwinds quickly and aids in relieving not only their minds, but the rest of the townsfolk too. The town, with all its residents, was at times like one character in itself, one that comes together to support Burke when he needs it most. But alas, his true salvation laid in Siobhan and their ability to find love once more. This was a truly enchanting tale of love lost and regained, revenge and a town saved. Bravo, Ms. Owens, for a wonderful read!

Nancy Bogen has one of the richest stories in Greenwich Village history from which to weave her tale. However, the characters are one-dimensional and essentially uninteresting. Hippolyte's story was entirely unnecessary and added nothing to the narrative. The prologue offered tremedous promise and set me up for a fascinating story - unfortunately, the actual novel did not follow through. Such a shame.

If you haven't read Rumer Godden before, you're in for a treat. Many of her books are set in India during British rule, and the patrician tone may be off-putting to some. But she sees the comedic humor in certain British government 'types' as well as the stereotypical Indian servants, landlords, and petty town mayors.
Kingfisher's Catch Fire is a classic cultural clash in which a clueless but well-meaning English widow with two children goes to Kashmir where she can live cheaply on her widow's pension - and one of her children is nearly killed in the process.
She is, of course, defeated in her attempts to change or 'civilize' the natives and...well, read the book yourself and find out what happens.
                                  A good read.

LOve this book and have read it many times, I enjoy the exotic geographical location and culture clash with the charming but ignorant and foolish Sophie. It is so obvious that she will come to grief. This book is a kinder, gentler "Ugly American" kind of story about cultural insensitivty in a well meaning person. The language is poetic and the story flows really well.

This novel is a most enjoyable story, an adult story, about a widow with young children learning to live in an alien, not always friendly place, a remote village in Kashmir, in the 1950s. It shows great understanding of the villagers, the children, and Sophie herself, headstrong, risking her own and her daughter's life because of her faith in other people, never giving up that faith. More than any other quality, it has enormous charm

5 out of 5 stars Great for establishing an optimum price.......2005-11-03

Professor Yisrael Aumann of the Hebrew University in Israel is one of the Nobel Prize winners for economics in 2005. His former student, professor Aharoni, notes that Aumann showed that various matters "can be analyzed mathematically." Thus, "a seller has various options, such as selling less for a higher price or more for a lower price. The buyer also has various options... a level can be found such that both sides will end up as satisfied as possible under given circumstances."

The above reminded me of the apparent intent of this Pricing Strategy book. And in particular that this book provides mathematical procedures, such as the equation and graph on the cover, for achieving an optimum balance between buyer and seller. The mathematical procedures can be a bit daunting for those not used to such a process. But the author provides graphs and look-up tables for those who want to avoid solving the equations. I recommend this book to anybody who is looking to find an "optimum"price with which both the buyer and seller are happy.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Great for price-volume analysis.......2004-12-28

It's great how many price-volume relationship variations this book provides, both in graphs, formulas and narrative. The answer to what I was looking for showed up in the "contribution to profit" section on page 191. I did have to go through the section a few times before I really understood what I was supposed to do. I wish the author had given more examples and explanations. Still it only took me about half an hour to figure it out. It was a breeze after that. I just looked up the result in the tables on page 194 and I was done. This is the right book for anybody who wants to investigate possible results on profit as the price is changed - either up or down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent buy as a reference.......2004-07-16

This book is a very well-organized reference book, written for busy people, and as such may complement other textbook-like treatments. The organizing 'strategy' in the book is to ensure that you don't have to wade through many paragraphs of prose to find the one piece information you're looking for - highlighting and bulleting makes the book very easy to use. Also, the many graphs are well-integrated with the text, which provides a clear "total picture" at a glance. The comprehensive list of definitions and multiple relationships and equations in the appendix also adds value, for someone looking to use the material right away. The author's abbreviated approach does leave out some useful material, so normally I'd rate the book at four stars. But for under $20, you can't go wrong with this book. It's a great basic book on pricing on its own, and can also be profitably used as a reference adjunct to other, more traditional, texts.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Lacks focus!.......2004-06-25

I went ahead to buy this book even though it has some substandard reviews simply because I wasnt looking for an overly complicated academic text on pricing. I graduated with a degree in economics and even though I dont consider myself a hard core economist I really felt that this text was bare bones. The first 4 chapters go on and on about what devising strategy entails and Engelson uses such 'dumbed' down english; its almost insulting to anyone in business. The examples are too brief and lack analytical rigor.

Some templates and graphs in chapter 5 were useful but whats up with a section on famous quotes? Seems like Engelson ran out of things to add to his book. This book is so short you can read it in one hour...dont waste 30 bucks on this one...go with KOTLER or Nagle

5 out of 5 stars Practical value of the book for real-time managers.......2000-11-01

I have looked at the previous book reviews, and for me they all appear to miss the mark. This is because these reviewers do not tell me all that much about the book but rather about themselves and their issues. I expect that some may see my review in the same category, but like the book says, "the final determination of value is in the mind of the buyer". I can see how the structure of this book may be considered by some not to be conducive to an academic study text. But I am not an academic and I do not need a textbook. I am a business owner and I need to analyze price and volume relationships in a practical way. I found the mathematical analysis procedures offered by this book to be of a superior quality, and the price/volume techniques particularly useful. I am giving this book a five rating because it provides the procedures and tools I need. I cannot see how someone would rate this book any lower in terms of what it provides and what it sets out to do. I wish there were some easy way to really know in advance how things would work out. This book at least makes the task that much easier with its analysis techniques and useful tools it provides.
