Excellent field guide for nature enthusiasts of Nebraska.......2000-09-05
I received this book as a gift from a nature center where I worked. I have used this guide in Nebraska, Ohio, and even S.Dakota. The book is organized by color of flower which is fast and easy when in the field. The full-color pictures are excellent and accompanied with very percise discription of other common names, family, flowering period, distribution, habitat, description and general information. I would recommend this book to any person interested in indentifying or just finding out a little bit more about the wildflowers of Nebraska.

Excellent guide to New Zealand.......2005-07-23
I was not familiar with this British travelguide series until I used this edition for my recent trip to New Zealand. The book is very easy to use, with pleasing layouts, and up-to-date and reliable restaurant recommendations of sites to see, hotels, restaurants, etc. The writer really showed his familiarity with NZ, and the writing was crisp and energetic. I had researched several guides to NZ (Fodors, Frommers, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide) before I left and found this one to be the best. I also looked into the Footprints guide to Australia and found it to be equally first-rate. I will definitely consider a Footprints guide again the next time I travel.

The Perfect Travel Companion.......2002-10-23
I was amazed to read the current review surrounding the Footprint New Zealand Handbook and would like to rally to its support!
I am a journalist based in London and do a great deal of traveling in the South Pacific. I always carry a guidebook and until recently relied on Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. This time however, on a recent two-month trip around New Zealand, tired of these major players (which always seem to rely more on their brand name rather than quality) I decided to try Footprint and the work of sole author Darroch Donald.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt the book was a valuable companion and the best and most entertaining guidebook I have ever come across.
The style was so refreshing and at times most amusing which was a nice change from the usual stuffy historic ramblings and bland descriptions.
Over all, compared to other guides I have used and regarding New Zealand in particular, I felt it was very well researched, accurate and up to date. The fact that the same author (who obviously loves the place) wrote and researched the entire book was also a major asset.
Of course there are a few spelling errors and I did come across the odd company or restaurant no longer in existence, but that is to be expected of any travel guide.
I was also interested to read about the omission of Milford Sound. In the book I purchased Milford Sound was included in the text so I presume this was just an error in editing with the first print run.
So in summary don't hesitate-I thoroughly recommended the Footprint New Zealand Handbook and now travel as a true convert to the company. I see Donald also contributed to the first edition of Australia and if New Zealand is anything to go by that book will be equally as much fun.

Look elsewhere for guidance on New Zealand.......2002-03-21
I purchased this guide as a break from the Lonely Planet guide I used the last time visiting New Zealand three years ago. With that guide, I encountered the same travelers again and again. This was my second trip--the first was two weeks touring by motorcycle, this second trip was for 6 weeks engaged in a variety of activities on both the North and South islands.
Unfortunately, while Mr. Donald provides a refreshing tone to the book, the inaccuracies and lack of critical information made the book useless to me. As my trip continued, I became increasingly annoyed by minor and major issues, and eventually stopped using the book by week 4.
A glaring example is a lack of useful information (and index reference) regarding Milford Sound itself. Perhaps it was just an editorial oversight with a section cut mistakenly, but this is one of the most desirable places to visit in New Zealand. There is a description of the road to Milford, but as I approached the area looking for lodging and activity information, I could find none and had to turn to the internet for useful information. As a popular, yet remote destination, it is critical to have information about boat trips, kayaking, flights, lodging, fuel, bookings and other transportation options. I can't see how this could have been omitted deliberately--but it's just not there (although it is pictured on the cover and not referenced in the photo).
A second example is the dearth of useful maps to help get orientation. The book mentions a lot of towns, but doesn't provide map guidance to show you where they are. The primary maps seem to be the ones that show 3-6 major cities at the head of each of the 15 sections that discuss potential destinations. There a few local maps, but not nearly enough as other guides. A travelers problem that resulted: The listed bus went close to Invercargill, but not through--couldn't find out how far Gore or Balfour are from Invercargill (pretty far).
There are several small instances of a lack of clarity which could be editorial overight, but for travelers, some small omissions could end up as larger problems. I.e., the transportation section for Whitianga discusses a 5 minute ferry crossing--in the graphic it says "passenger ferry" but in the text discusses it as an option for gaining access to the sights on the other side. Unfortunately, there are few transportation options once you get across without a vehicle--or you'll need to backtrack 40km in your car if you don't want to take a tour.
There are numerous minor editorial mistakes (mis-spellings, innacuracies, businesses and activities that no longer exist) which you expect with any guide book. These are easy to bypass initially, but after finding a pretty shallow look at the rest of the country, they leave you feeling more and more annoyed than patient.
Overall, one would do far better by joining the local auto club, where you can get a guide to lodging, maps, and guides to activities that are actually up to date (which I ended up doing). The Lonely Planet guide was the only other one I used, which as better, but still mediocre (3 stars) Originally, I purchased the book as a change. I got that--a fresh tone, but I also received too much empty space and won't look to Footprint again for now.

Description:
Bicknell et al.'s [Ecological Economics 27 (1998) 149] input-output methodology is extended to investigate the Ecological Footprints and interdependencies of 16 regions in New Zealand. There is a particular focus on the Auckland region as a case study example of the application of the methodology. Auckland, New Zealand's primate city, was found to have the largest regional footprint of 2.32 million ha (20% of New Zealand's footprint). However, on a per capita basis it had the second lowest footprint of all regions at 2.00 ha per person. The footprint analysis was extended to demonstrate how Auckland was ecologically dependent on other regions, particularly the Waikato region. The footprints of other New Zealand regions are reported, along with international comparisons. The paper also reviews the theory and practice of Ecological Footprinting, as well as commenting on various methodological issues that have arisen in the calculation of Ecological Footprints.

Description:
The goal of sustainability is to have levels of resource use and waste assimilation sufficient to maintain a good quality of life for citizens, yet be within environmental carrying capacities. In countries with ageing populations, consumption is constrained by the lower incomes of retired people, and therefore, prospects exist for reductions in resource use and pollutant outputs. The extent of this effect is investigated in this study. This paper uses a new approach to quantify, by age cohort, patterns of resource use and residual generation in New Zealand. These use patterns are then projected to 2051 to see what happens as the population ages. Results indicate that resource use and waste production decline as more people enter the 65+ age group. Gains, however, are diminished by the smaller percentage of young people who have the lowest per capita requirements. Projected growth in population numbers swamp any reductions from ageing effects, even when allowances have been made for future technical change.

Putting the voyages of Christopher Columbus in perspective.......2004-10-11
"Christopher Columbus and the First Voyages to the New World" makes the case that what Columbus did in 1492 was "the most momentous miscalculation in history." Stephen C. Dodge tells the story of the stubborn captain-general who led at iny fleet of three ships from the Spanish port of Palos that August. Columbus was convinced that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean he would reach the Indies and claim the riches coveted by all of Europe for Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain. They sponsored the expedition that after a voyage of a little more than a month discovered an island gateway to two new continents that had been forgotten by whatever Europeans had ventured that far in the past.
The meeting of Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas on the tiny island of San Salvador was arguably the most momentous in the history of civilization. Although Dodge only touches on the treachery, mayhem, slavery, and genocide that followed that first peaceful encounter, such things are much on the minds of students today who see Columbus as the father of all of the evils of the world represented by dead, white, male Europeans. The flip side of the coin is the entirely new civilization that Europeans built in the New World on the ruins of their old one.
The Columbus of Dodge's book is a man who made three voyages of discovery to the Americas, all of which were filled with high adventure and made possible by his uncanny seamanship. But he was also a man who died bitter and neglected, not to mention unaware that he had given Spain the foundation for a massive empire that would make it a world power. The book begins with the first voyage to the Americas and then goes back in time to tell how Columbus first tried to persuade the Portuguese to underwrite his enterprise to the Indies before getting the backing of the Spanish. Chapters are devoted to the rest of Columbus' voyages and then the attacks that targeted Columbus after disillusionment over the realities of the New World made him the devil incarnate to his opponents on Hispaniola. The last chapter on "The High Voyage" tells of how Columbus died hurt over the loss of his privileges and feeling he had been cheated by the Spanish crown. In the middle of the book you will find "Widening the Globe," a photo-essay in color of maps and paintings reflecting the world of Columbus. The rest of the book is illustrated with black & white paintings, etchings, woodcuts, maps, writings, and artifacts, most of which are fairly contemporary to the life of Columbus.
This volume will provide young students with an understanding of who Columbus was and what he did in the context of the era in which he lived. Although some of the information about Columbus is now in doubt (that recent special on cable television convinced me that Columbus was really Spanish, not because of those failed DNA tests but because most of what we have written in his own hand is in Spanish and none of it is in Italian), his voyages and what happened afterwards are the core of this book and remain solid. Other sources will certainly provide attacks on the consequences of what Columbus did, but understanding his accomplishments in the context of his time is a necessary foundation for all of the latter criticism as well as for any attempt to judge the man fairly.
The World Explorers series of 33 volumes is divided into four categories that recount the exploits of the scientists and sailors, missionaries and soldier, mountain men and astronauts, whose journeys of exploration advanced human knowledge. The first looks at explorers of the ancient world such as the Vikings explorers of the 9th-11th centuries along with Marco Polo and the medieval explorers. The other three parts cover the three great ages of exploration. The first is the era of Columbus and Magellan in the 15th-16th centuries when the New World was discovered and explored. The second is the age of science and imperialism made possible by the scientific advances of the 17th century where the world's last two undiscovered continents, Australia and Antarctica, were discovered and the entire world was mapped. The final age looks at the ambitious quests of the 20th century with the exploration of the depths of the ocean and the final frontier of space.

Customer Reviews:
Best book ever written.......2007-09-14
This was the most thoroughly informative, entertaining, and magnificent piece of literature I have ever read on any subject. Richard Doernberg sheds light on some of the most difficult concepts in U.S. tax law. His clever insights and piercing intellectual observations will make you reconsider your thoughts on life, the universe, and everything. Doernberg is truly the best thing to happen to international taxation since the check the box regulations.
Wonderful overview of international tax.......2007-06-21
The International Tax Nutshell is a wonderful overview of international tax. As some comments have indicated, it is a tough area, but Doernberg does a great job of guiding people through the various twists and turns.
Not for laymen, indeed.......2007-02-21
Disregard reviews criticizing the technical nature of this book. I became a fond user of the Nutshell series when I was in law school; I don't think that these books were ever intended for use by the Average Joe. By its very nature, the subject matter is technical and can only be simplified so much. There is a reason why there is no such book as "International Taxation for Dummies" or "Brain Surgery for Dummies".
These books are great to use as a springboard for further research and study of the issues covered. I would recommend the book to students and practitioners of accounting, business, and taxation.
Sooo dull.......2007-02-18
It a good book in terms of what to spect from a "in a nut shell" book, but the topic is reeaaally boring.
Too technical for somebody just wanting to get an idea of this subject.
I'm not employed by a tax lawyer.......2006-02-28
This would probably be a great book for a law student, but not for a lay person. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, but I had a bit of difficulty wading through this to find the little bit of info that I needed. I'm sure it's also a great book for someone with a tax background.
