Book Description

A pocket guide to identifying native ferns that grow in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, and eastern Canada. Like other plant guides in the "Finders" series, "Fern Finder" is a dichotomous key, which leads the user step-by-step through a series of choices to the species being identified. Heavily illustrated with line drawings.

Easy to cary and use, great for the novice or beginner interested in fern identification.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of info in a graphic format.......2003-06-02

This is a great book in a small package. Graphic icons convey useful information that is understandable at a glance. Excellent illlustrations. Good for beginner or intermediate fern student. I use it as a supplement to text-heavy fern guides.

5 out of 5 stars Compact and Economical Guide to Ferns.......2002-08-03

Among flowering plants, the flowers are often a crucial feature in identifying them. But then there are non-flowering plants, such as the Pteridiophytes, which include ferns. Those who know a lot about flowering plants can still be at a loss when it comes to identifying ferns. Some of the best books about wildflowers feature colorful pictures, and those can be a major aid to identification. But when it comes to ferns, with their tinier reproductive structures that are less showy than all but the smallest flowers, pictures alone are much less of a vital key to identification. Instead, one needs to observe details like clumped or scattered growth patterns, scaly or smooth stipes (the stems of fern fronds), and arrangement and shape of the sori (clusters of spore-bearing parts). This small but useful book is an excellent introduction to these and other features important in fern identification. Once you learn them, the book provides a key for sorting out what fern one is observing, using those features. This book best covers the ferns of the eastern and central U.S. and Canada. As shown on this site, there is also a Pacific Coast version of this book for those observing and hoping to identify ferns there.

This book is very technical and difficult to understand with out previous knowledge of ferns. The dichotomous key uses terms that are not found in the glossary and diagrams do not show all of the appropriate parts needed to use the key succesfully. The book is well written and drawings are very usefull, but without a easy to use key the book is difficult to use in the field to identify unknown plants.

                    Book Description

Housesteads is the most popular site on Hadrian's Wall, with its well-excavated remains bringing us closer to the 800 men who garrisoned the fort at any one time. As James Crow charts the development and growth of the fort, as well as the enclosures and features outside its walls, he discusses the builders and occupants, the civilian population, and the history of its excavation during the last two centuries. This study is supported throughout with plans and photographs of the fort, artifacts, inscriptions, and excavators.

                      Book Description

Peter Connolly utilizes the latest historical evidence from excavations of major fortifications to create a detailed and fascinating portrait of typical Roman forts and of the soldiers who maintained them along Hadrian's Wall and other Roman boundaries for more than 350 years.
He begins with the actual construction of roads and forts, using cross-sections and cutaways that show the actual building techniques the Romans used. Next he turns to the soldiers and the forts they maintained. We look into their barracks to see how they slept, cooked their food, what they did
for relaxation, how the plumbing worked, and how they prepared for battle.
The meticulous and well-researched drawings and maps for which Connolly is known will attract young readers and keep them enthralled. And his skills as an archeologist and storyteller enable him to present the latest discoveries, conclusions, and speculations in a highly entertaining and
                      easy-to-understand text.

5 out of 5 stars Paperbacks moving to a single volume?.......2007-01-10

All of Connolly's books are must-haves. I see the paperback versions of Roman Fort, The Legionary and The Cavalryman seem to be out of print. I have a feeling that these titles may reappear as a single volume sometime in the near future. Previous titles by this author, The Roman Army, The Greek Armies, and Hannibal and the Enemies of Rome first appeared as paperbacks in 1977-78. The content of these books came together in the single hardcover, Greece and Rome at War, in 1981. So, the same thing may be happening again.

5 out of 5 stars Roman forts and daily life........2000-10-06

This book is the story of Roman fortifications along Hadrian's Wall. Using the First Tungrian Cohort as a vehicle, the author traces their building of different types of fortifications and their life among them. The book includes many diagrams and exquisite cut-away images to show what the various buildings looked like both inside and out. Also, the well-written text explains construction techniques and a good deal about daily life in the Imperial Roman Army.

This is an excellent book on Roman fortifications and garrison troops, and I recommend it highly.

A great addition to a 6th grade social studies library or a 6th grade student's personal collection. The book has many very detailed and highly interesting illustrations that are suplemented by easily-read descriptive text. This book is age appropriate (11-12 years) and does not contain material that parents would find to be objectionable.

                              Book Description

The international aspects of income taxation have become increasingly important as countries worldwide have become more economically integrated. International Tax Primer provides an introduction to the policies that countries seek to advance with their international tax rules, with numerous examples drawn from the practices of both developed and developing countries. It grew out of the authors' work with the OECD in conducting seminars on international tax for tax officials in countries emerging from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book emphasizes tax treaties and other cooperative arrangements that countries employ to coordinate their income tax systems with the tax systems of their trading partners. International Tax Primer strikes a balance between the specific and the general by illustrating the fundamental principles and structure of international tax with frequent reference to actual practice in a variety of countries. Coverage includes: + the role of the tax adviser; + tax planning techniques; + international double taxation; transfer pricing; + anti-avoidance rules; + tax treaties, including discussion of the OECD and UN Model Treaties; + emerging issues, such as e-commerce and harmful tax competition. The work also offers such practical features as: + an extensive glossary of international tax terms; and + a selected bibliography of international tax reference materials, including a list of periodicals devoted to international tax. Students, government officials, and tax practitioners who may be confronting international tax issues for the first time, as well as experienced international tax practitioners, will find International Tax Primer a helpful articulation of the fundamental principles that arise again and again in this field. The book works as both an introduction and a refresher in an area where issues often prove more complex than they seem and where a return to the basics is often the most helpful means of untangling a multi-layered problem. The second edition provides updates for recent developments and expands the coverage by providing many new examples. A chapter dealing with harmful tax competition, hybrid entities, and the taxation of e-commerce has been added to the book.

                              5 out of 5 stars Truly a good primer.......2003-02-13

This is the only book I found that actually explained everything in its table of contents in a way that I could understand. This is an excellent book for a total beginner just trying to understand the basic issues of thin capitalization rules, deductions vs. exemptions vs. credits, double taxation, tax sparing, tax havens, etcetera.
