        Description:
A simple theory of 'desertification' is found inadequate for understanding the complexity, diverse patterns and flexibility of farmers' responses to change in environmental conditions and population growth in the Sahel. These include long-term transitions in farming practices, in management of natural resources and in income diversification. This paper reviews evidence relating to deforestation, woodland and rangeland degradation to show that in certain areas, a transition to intensified land use, although initially involving a loss of woodland, has led to the planting or protection of useful trees on farms and maintained biomass levels. Livestock numbers have been maintained, despite declining rainfall and loss or apparent degradation of rangeland, by development of more integrated livestock, arable and marketing systems. The possibility of these trends having impact on Sahelian 'greening' is discussed.

          Description:
Water relations of four tree species were studied in four sites in the drylands of northern Ethiopia. Predawn water potentials were significantly higher at all sites as compared to midday measurements for Acacia etbaica and Boswellia papyrifera. In contrast, Lannea fruticosa revealed this significant difference only once, while Terminalia brownii at only two of the four sites. An analysis of variance showed that A. etbaica has a wider tolerance range as compared to the other species. There was no significant difference among the four sites in terms of predawn, midday and diurnal ranges of water potential. The study revealed that A. etbaica and B. papyrifera are performing better as compared to T. brownii and L. fruticosa under the current climatic conditions. Understanding the physiological basis of survival, productivity, ability to cope with low moisture availability, and growth potential of indigenous species in the drylands is essential for the utilization and promotion of these and other species.

There are so many travel choices it's frightening, or it would be if not for Miranda Haines's Traveler's Handbook, which helps with issues like when to travel, where to travel, which festivals to aim for or avoid, what guides to buy, and what kind of focus you want in your trip: independence, adventure, romance, luxury, work, or eco-travel. The Handbook explores each option, describing the ups and downs of traveling alone, as well as the practicalities to consider for pregnant, elderly, and diabetic travel, honeymoon, gay, and vegetarian travel, and female, student, and business travel.

There are chapters on all the concerns of flying (how to choose an airline, getting a good deal, traveler's protection), overlanding (motorbikes to trucks to buying and selling a car abroad), train travel, river travel, hitchhiking, foot, and microlight travel, cargo ship, horse, and camel travel. There are chapters on visas and money, health and luggage, communication, computers, and theft, as well as surviving a hijack, a kidnap, and a civil war. No travel stone is left unturned. And as if this weren't enough, there follows a directory of all the countries in the world, with info on population, capital, currency, government, religion, safety, and best times to visit for each. This plus world weather charts, rainy season guides, sea temperatures and city altitudes make this an incredibly thorough and useful book.

Travel is the unknown, and the unknown promotes anxiety. It's reassuring to read these careful, perceptive words penned by someone who's given some thought to all the angles.

2 out of 5 stars Facts for travel.......2005-11-22

This book contains the same information in the beginning of any guide book regarding money, transport, health......but no specific details. It is a compilation of articles written about different type of travel such as hitchiking, cargo boats... It is a general overview with no details on travel around the world...just bits and pieces.

                    4 out of 5 stars Traveler's Handbook Rules!.......2005-07-31

This book was very informative. We are planning an around the world trip next year and this book created a great starting point with many chapters to stimulate your thinking. We really enjoyed the listing of all the countries with information on "when to travel", "safety", and "visas" required. It also provided local phone numbers and addresses around the world to reach incase of an emergency. We will definitely bring this book on our travels!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and inspiration.......2002-03-29

This book is everything it's cracked up to be. One thing anyone considering buying this should note, though is that it's a UK based publication. In discussions about visas and work permits, it assumes EU citizenship. A lot of the advice wouldn't pertain to a U.S. citizen. Most of the directory information only lists U.K. based organizations.

That said, this is a great resource and very inspirational. It's made me think about going to places that I would have never even considered before. That's mostly because it combines engaging narratives by obviously well-travelled writers along with nuts and bolts practical information on the "how to" planning stages, and insightful advice.

It prepares you for the cultural differences you're likely to encounter, and prompts you to think about contingencies due to weather, medical, or political trouble. There are warnings about the hazards and adversity of some travel without trying to scare you away from it. The book manages to be a general purpose travel guide without being generic. It would be an equally good read for adventure travellers as it would for cruise ship enthusiasts.

The reference section alone is well worth the price, giving you fascinating and comprehensive information about every country on the planet. This book approaches you like a good friend who happens to be an experienced travel agent, hoping to help you plan a trip of a lifetime. It is remarkably well written and organized. I can't imagine planning a trip overseas without it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't travel the world without it!.......2001-04-03

This is a great book. It is little in size, but huge in content. The editors have covered just about every aspect of world travel. If you want to know about riding a camel, how to survive being kidnapped, or how to avoid hassles in a certain country, this book will have the answer for you. It also includes a lot of emergency contacts, practical global travel tips, and useful website addresses.

5 out of 5 stars This book is THE hitchiker's guide to the planet Earth........1998-03-25

What an indispensable guide for the world traveler. This book is cover-to-cover bits in a single volume, weighing the same as a water bottle. This book is literally the planet earth's version of the famed "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy", with short, informed essays on everything from choosing guides to all forms of travel to finding great rates to finding places to stay to equipping for a trip to what to do when things go wrong (topics for that one include: theft, trouble with the law, surviving a hijack, surviving a kidnap, surviving in jungle/desert/cold, and my favorite: surviving a civil war). Plus it's got 300 pages of directory, like an all-bits almanac....

This book is the latest edition of The Traveler's Handbook published by WEXAS. It has short articles on a number of travel related subjects.Included are: country profiles for every country in the world,a comprehensive directory of top travel related websites, specialist travel suppliers, vaccinations required, information on travelling safely with survival tips for dangerous situations and extreme conditions, how to work and live abroad, how to meet and enjoy the challenges of other culture.I have owned every edition and now, as a international corporate travel specialist for one of the world's financial institutions, I use it almost daily. Today it was for a first time female traveler to Bangladesh and I gave her suggestions on how to dress modestly in a muslim county, when the monsoons stop and how hot and humid it will be when she is there. Yesterday I had a passenger going to The Gambia
This is the best, most complete and concise travel guide written. It is the size of a paper back book and the latest edition permanently resides in my carry-on. Over the years, mine have flown over a million miles with me.

Using a computer to beat Wall Street from afar is, arguably, the new American dream. While it will remain just that for most of us, an offbeat gang of academics turned financial wizards is showing it can be done. Led by acclaimed physicists Doyne Farmer and Norman Packard, the Santa Fe-based Prediction Company has proven since its 1991 founding in an adobe bungalow furnished with plastic lawn chairs and top-of-the-line Sun workstations that it is indeed possible to make millions in the world's financial markets by anticipating trends and developing software that automatically capitalizes on them. In The Predictors, Thomas A. Bass colorfully relates their tale of fiscal triumph--and reveals in the process how even an unorthodox group of antibusiness intellectuals in far-off New Mexico can make the world's biggest institutions sit up and take notice.

Long esteemed in the scientific community, Farmer and Packard have become legendary in hacker circles since their failed attempt to beat the roulette tables in Las Vegas with toe-operated computers was chronicled in Bass's well-regarded 1985 book called The Eudaemonic Pie. This time, though, the two hit the jackpot with their cutting-edge computer programs and the company they created to trade German marks, Chicago commodities, Japanese treasury bonds, Texas oil futures, and New York securities. Bass's prose is a bit flowery at times, but his perceptive you-are-there account is nonetheless entertaining and sure to cement the pair's reputation as today's ultimate masters of "phynance," the successful, and now oft-copied, merger of physics and finance. --Howard Rothman

                        Book Description

Excerpted in The New Yorker and hailed by the business press, The Predictors is destined to become a classic of its generation--an antic, subversive odyssey into a universe defined by the mystical convergence of physics and finance. How could a couple of rumpled physicists in sandals and Eat-the-Rich T-shirts, piling computers into an adobe house in Santa Fe, hope to take on the masters of the universe from Morgan Stanley? Doyne Farmer and Norman Packard may never have read The Wall Street Journal, but they happen to be among the founders of the new sciences of chaos and complexity. Who better to try to find order in the apparently unreasoned chaos of the global financial markets? Thomas A. Bass takes us inside their start-up company, following it from its inception as a motley collection of longhaired Ph.D.s to its passage into the centers of financial power, where "the predictors" find investors and finally go live with real money. The Predictors is a dizzying, often hilarious tale of genius and greed.

2 out of 5 stars boring,,,i dont care about the weather.......2006-06-07

this book could be better, but the author is giving too much details of some unnecessary objects, like describing the weather and shape of the chin of someone or what sandwich some unrelated guy is eating and what underwears they like for 2 paragraphs. suddenly he jumps to talk about the history of sante fe and the Zozoba a couple of times which i still dont know what the heck is it.

i got so irritated readin about the excessive writings on completely unrelated objects and subjects that i paid less attention even when he is talking about the related characters.

after all the mental abuse, we are left with nothing about how the adventure eventaully goes...REFUND!Not a recommended read, skip!

4 out of 5 stars Required Reading Before Trying to 'Beat the Market'.......2006-01-31

With over 80,000,000 Americans investing in the stock market, many believe that they can quickly and easily go in and 'out-think' all those other traders who "just aren't as smart as I am." Well, before you go in and compete against the big boys, you might want to read this book to get a good understanding of who and what you are competing against.

There is an old saying that goes "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out." Yeah, well, maybe not. But, when you try to outwit the market, you better realize that you are competing against rocket scientists, and physicists, and mathematicians who attack the market in ways the average investor can't even comprehend. Yet, that is who you compete against in the market.

This book tells the story of a group of physicists and their friends who set out to build an automated trading system that would rule the market. Did they succeed? Well, I wouldn't want to give away the ending. But, needless to say, before you jump into the stock market and get your ego and pocketbook devastated, you might want to read about how difficult it is to 'rule the market' even when you have some of the best brains in the US tackling the problem with resources that you and I will never have.

This book should be required reading before a person can invest in the stock market.

                        3 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading.......2005-03-11

Plenty of facts here and good first reading for someone wanting to understand the world markets - it will whet your appetite.
The book jumps around a lot from events to biographies of the people involved, so try to hang on.
There is no technical information given on the methods used other than generalizations. The books leaves you thinking that the company will be a huge success. Its hard to tell if this is the case by looking at the company's website at www.predict.com.
The book is the best thing to happen to this company - better than its technology.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Topic not Handled Well.......2004-04-12

I agree with many of the other reviewers. This book is 90% filler. Instead of discussing the topic at hand, we are repeatedly bombarded with a desciption of the weather, the El Paso fiesta season, etc... This is a story about a group of (in my opinion, uninteresting) characters, and not a book on Investing or Science. Not recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Another book about a start-up.......2003-11-28

This book is less about the market and more about the personal relationships and dealings of a business start-up. I'm surprised that the book lists its category as BUSINESS/SCIENCE when truly it lies in the former. I guess mentioning chaos theory, neural networks and genetic algorithms was all that was needed.

Regardless, it was an entertaining story about a group of physicists, being totally ignorant of the market, decide that they can predict the market. The storyline follows what I would consider typical of any start-up; the fights, arguments, doubts, meetings galore, etc... As I said, entertaining but not too much different from any other story about a start-up.

                        My two biggest complaints:

                        1) The back cover from the San Francisco Chronicle calls this book "one of the best books ever written about commodities, currency, and derivatives trading." I don't think they even read the book since this book isn't about trading but all about the traders.

                        2) The over use of descriptive fashion and landscape. I lost track of how many times we needed to be told who was wearing what and how blue the sky was in Santa Fe. It really got annoying after awhile.

                        Book Description

Applied Linear Regression Models was listed in the newsletter of the Decision Sciences Institute as a classic in its field and a text that should be on every member's shelf. The third edition continues this tradition. It is a successful blend of theory and application. The authors have taken an applied approach, and emphasize understanding concepts; this text demonstrates their approach trough worked-out examples. Sufficient theory is provided so that applications of regression analysis can be carried out with understanding. John Neter is past president of the Decision Science Institute, and Michael Kutner is a top statistician in the health and life sciences area. Applied Linear Regression Models should be sold into the one-term course that focuses on regression models and applications. This is likely to be required for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in allied health, business, economics, and life sciences.

If you are going to spend money, buy the best. This book is the best and IS the standard. I'd consider this the "Gray's Anatomy" of Applied Linear Statiscal Models (i.e. Design of Experiments, Regression, hypothesis testing).

This book is geared for an entry level masters or 400 level student. If you don't fall into this category, this could be worthwhile, just know you'll need to put more time in to learn the material...or...you could get a book geared toward your level. Vardeman's applied statistics for engineers would be one that comes to mind for subject matter that is geared for knowledge below KNNW's Applied Linear Statistical Models.

Bottom line is that this is a must have in anyone's library who is going to do statistical analysis using linear models. It's one of my (and most of my co-workers) go to books if we need to refresh on a quick method to approach a problem.

All in all, it covers all the basics and for the money is a great applied book.

This hard-bound text was received in excellent condition and should last for as long as I plan on using it; however, there are cheaper versions (like the international version) that contain exactly the same information (plus additional information about ANOVA designs). I am still happy with my purchase, but if you are low on cash, I would recommend purchasing a different edition of this book.

the author don't know how to express in simple and understandable language, although he know very well in this major. I have already read some other books of this major, it is still confusing me a lot to understand some sentences in this book.

This book if not for business majors , engineering students and psycology students.

This is an EXCELLENT book for statistics undergrad/grad and PhD students.
I spent over 10 hours weekly just reading the book every week. Plus my assignments will take another 10 hours . So be prepared for a 20 hr week.
YOU NEED TO TAKE A BASIC STAT / INTRO STAT course before this. If you dont know the meaning of P-values , T-test , F-test , DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. This book will not introduce you to those things. Unfortunately many buiness schools ( including top 10 ) dont offer a good intro stat course, so buiness majors jumping in to this course is a wrong idea.

This book is also a "good to own book". The first 15 or so chapters has regression and the second half ( next 15 chapters ) has DOE (design of experiments). GREAT BOOK !

One piece of advice - make sure you learn to use SAS with this course . In real world applications many industries are using SAS. Even if your teacher insists on using R package / splus , YOU MAKE SURE YOU know how to do those things in SAS . There is a SAS student manual with this book, specially written for this book . buy it ISBN - 0-07-302177-6

                        good luck !

I bought this book because I needed it for a class, and I have only used it a few times for the class. It's hard to learn stats from a textbook unless you start at the beginning, but this book is useful to accompany a previously-knowledgeable statistics mind seeking to learn more about regression.

Great book, but probably will not help a rookie to self-teach regression.

This is a HUMAN RESOURCES RESEARCH ORGANIZATION ALEXANDRIA VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A440083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The goal of the Soldier21 and NCO21 projects was to conduct a comprehensive analysis of future conditions and future job demands in order to identify critical performance predictors or knowledges, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that may eventually be developed into selection (Soldier21) and promotion (NCO21) criteria. Three eras were examined: the Army of Excellence (1990-2000), Army XXI (2000-2010), and the Army After 2010 (2010-2025). The specific objectives for Soldier21 were to (a) identify and describe the nature and type of changes that are expected to occur in these eras, (b) forecast future job requirements and the critical individual characteristics of soldiers who will perform proficiently, and (c) identify selection measures that might be used to assess individual characteristics. For NCO2l, the objectives were to (a) provide a description of forecasted conditions affecting future NCO performance, (b) describe the future job requirements, and (c) provide a descriptive list of the main qualities needed for effective noncommissioned officer performance. This report documents the methodology and findings of this effort.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A535424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Modeling fatigue, sleepiness, and performance is of significant interest to military leaders because military operations often provide limited sleep opportunities for many individuals. The ANAM Readiness Evaluation System (ARES) Commander Eattery is under consideration as a quick, inexpensive method of testing a crewmember's level of functioning. This thesis analyzed data collected during a previous field fatigue study conducted at the Naval Officer Indoctrination School (QIS) in Newport, Rhode Island. Linear mixed-effects models were developed and ARES data were evaluated for how they vary across participants, testing sessions, and time of day.
