Yet another insight into wildlife photography........2007-05-12

Whenever I am not diving, writing, researching or whatever I am usually found trying to perfect my natural history photography techniques. I was having no success at all until, a few years ago, I was given a copy of one of this author's earlier books as a present. I was immediately inspired by the content and within 2 years I had a full 5 page spread of my pictures of a wild Barn Owl in flight, reproduced in a leading British magazine about birds.

It is as though this author has produced this book containing another selection of natural history photographs just to show me that I have hardly begun to master the techniques involved. There are Harvest Mice, flowers, snakes, birds, plants and much more - but only Dalton could photograph a pile of leaves in autumn in such a way as to show the aspiring natural history photographer simply how it should be done.

Stephen Dalton's books are ground-breaking in the way they reveal the results of his very special techniques. Without such books, nobody's personal skills with a camera would move on to bigger and better things and very few readers would be given the opportunity of appreciating wildlife - as it really is in the wild.

Once again we have a collection of photographs from which even the most accomplished natural history photographer will learn something.

A fresh and comprehensive exploration of how health care rationing decisions are made, this book offers not specific criteria for rationing--like age or quality of life--but a comparative analysis of three alternative decision makers: consumers paying out of pocket, government and insurance officials setting limits on treatments and coverage, and physicians making decisions at the bedside. Hall's analysis reveals that none of these alternatives is uniformly superior, and, therefore, a mix of all three is inevitable. The author develops his analysis along three lines of reasoning: political economics, ethics, and law. The economic dimension addresses the practical feasibility of each method for making spending decisions. The ethical dimension discusses several theories--principally classic liberalism, social contract theory, and communitarianism--as well as concepts like autonomy and coercion. The legal dimension follows recent developments in legal doctrine such as informed consent, insurance coverage disputes, and the emerging direction of federal regulation. Hall concludes that physician rationing at the bedside is far more promising than medical ethicists and the medical profession have traditionally allowed.

Book Description

This study chronicles four large manufacturers during a period of crisis and restructuring when they needed vast sums of money just to survive- let alone adapt to remain competitive. By focusing on how these firms found financing, Victoria Marklew shows that the way national financial systems channel money to industry is the key issue in industrial competitiveness.

The author challenges the traditional approach in comparative political economy by starting her analysis of government-industry relations at the level of the firm. By so doing, the author is able to chart in a unique way the role governments play in setting the boundaries of financial systems and to show how these boundaries fundamentally determine the kinds of financing to which a firm has access.

The case studies (comparing the British Steel Corporation's passage from state to private ownership, the French steel industry's evolution into the nationalized Usinor Sacilor, British Leyland's transition from a nationalized company to two privately-owned firms, and Peugeot SA's rise to a dominant firm in the French private sector) dramatically prove that whether ownership is public or private has little to do with a firm's ability to survive a crisis. By extending her arguments to the United States, Germany, and Japan, the author shows how apparently very different governments in fact behave remarkably similarly, highlighting more accurately where the key differences among them lie and what the consequences of these differences are.

Victoria Marklew holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and is an International Economist for the Northern Trust Company, Chicago.

Smart and well-written!.......2000-07-25

This is an excellent and unusual book, since it is eminently readable in addition to interesting, and is useful in both the business world and policy analysis.

The idea is that two very different governments (Socialist France and Thatcherite Britain) had a remarkably similar approach to funding heavy industry. The implications for national (and developing global) financial structures are significant, and are approached (again unusual and extremely useful) from both the national macro level, and from the firm/micro level.

This book is a unique contribution to business analysis, macroeconomic policy and political structures. It is rare to find a book which is applicable in the real world as much as in the academic one, and this one is also well-written and accessible.
