great!!.......2004-05-24
I picked this book up before a recent business trip up to NYC and I could not be happier with my purchase. The itineraries for one or two days really helped me fit in the things I really wanted to see in the short amount of time I had. The descriptions of the sights were very informative, not too wordy but, at the same time, not too limited of a description. Other guidebooks I have used in the past have these plucky descriptions that leave you wondering why on earth you would go to visit that particular museum. Michelin does a great job of calling out the important & interesting qualities of all of the sights listed in this book. I will definately be using the other must sees books on future trips!

A Single-Volume Encyclopedia of Practical Household Aid.......2007-07-06
There are hundreds of items of advice in this volume, and they are applicable to topics as diverse as gardening, household cleaning, the entertaining of guests, caring for pets, simple mechanical care, and many others. Who would imagine some of them! Did you know, for instance, that dressing in clothing that contains vertical stripes makes you look taller? Or that vinegar can clean and deodorize your coffeepot? Or that you can avoid smashed fingers, when driving in a nail, by first sticking the nail into a piece of cardboard before driving it home? Or that a licked and closed envelope can be re-opened, without damaging it, by freezing it first? Or that olive oil can substitute for shoe polish?
Much of the advice presented in this book centers upon foods. There is a ranking of peppers according to their spiciness. The flavor of coffee can be prolonged by keeping it at a freezer (since chemical reactions, including those that degrade feedstuffs, tend to proceed more slowly at colder temperatures). I found this to be the case.
Finally, the advice presented here is not merely relevant to household conditions. For example, there is a suggestion to re-use plastic egg cartons for the holding of paint--a different color in each chamber. As a teacher, I found this especially useful in children's art projects. What's more, the messy egg-carton "palettes" can be disposed after the project is over.
Easy Does It!: Cheap & Simple Ways to Solve Common Household Problems.......2006-08-17
I have used this book on an as needed or reference basis. It gives several ideas and solutions for each problem I have looked up. The solutions I chose worked and were helpful.
A Must Have !.......2004-05-17
I came across this book at a friends house and found myself sifting throught it. It has ALOT of useful information on so different many topics. It has useful tips on everything from how to clear a drain with cheaper products to how to save money on gas...I had to order a copy of my own ASAP, you should to!
Can't Live Without This One.......2004-04-05
This is the title that every person needs to own!! It has wonderful commonsense information about a huge amount of everyday household problems and topics with easy solutions. For instance, in reference to a mouse problem in my house, it gave me at least 4 different ways to deter the little critters. All of the ways consisted of items which I already had in my cabinets, but didn't know would solve the problem. The diversity of topics absolutely amazed me and encouraged the immediate placement of this title on the most accessible shelve in my bookcase. I know that it will be indispensable!! The price is perfect too. Thumbs up!

This is an informative guide to tight-wad gardening........1998-11-11
What? Another gardening book? This book, "Dirt Cheap Gardening, Hundreds of Ways to Save Money in Your Garden," is a guide that every gardener needs, whether or not he already owns other gardening books. It has some very practical advice, from starting seeds inexpensively, to drying your own produce. Rhonda Massingham Hart, the author, packs a lot of info into this paperback of only 166 pages. You can skim-read it in an evening, and the information you read will help you with your gardening all year. This book mostly covers vegetable gardening, harvesting, and storage. If you are an avid gardener who enjoys saving money, too, this book is for you.
Book Description
Saving money as you plan the most important day of your life isn't about cutting corners; it's about avoiding being taken advantage of. While the nationwide average for planning a wedding takes 11 months and nearly $30,000, Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot shows how you can plan a beautiful church wedding in less than six months for no more than $5,000.
This ultimate guide for the engaged busts myths, shares negotiating tactics and points out easy, no-effort ways to save on invitations, flowers, pictures and entertainment without sacrificing quality. Most importantly, it deals with the underlying issue of good stewardship that young couples can develop at the outset and continue throughout their marriage.
Each area of wedding planning (dress, invitations, decoration, ceremony, reception and photography) is broken into three different scenarios (bargain=$, budget=$$, bling=$$$). Depending on their budget, the reader can follow one track, or mix and match to splurge in areas they feel more strongly about (like pictures vs. food).

Meaningful Weddings.......2007-03-28
This has been a great tool throughout my engagement for planning my wedding! I plan to pass it along to another engaged friend.
For girls (and guys!) looking to plan a wedding that is more meaningful than elaborate, this is your book. I'm a fan of anything that helps me organize, and this book's checklists and budget sheets were extremely useful. The other books (and magazines) I'd considered were more about including every possible tradition and fad into my wedding, whereas this one helped me take a look at what would mean something to my now-spouse and myself.
Good ideas -- for a church wedding.......2007-02-19
I'm really glad this book exists -- it does have some smart suggestions for how to avoid the vortex of spending encountered any time one comes remotely near the wedding industry. Davis does a good job cutting through some of the haze that bridal magazines create around what you "have to do" to have a happy wedding day. That said, pay attention to the subtitle: a church wedding. The author's game plan is all centered around having your wedding at a church, using the church's fellowship hall for your reception, and enlisting the assistance of fellow parishoners to pull the event off. If you're a less traditional couple, trying to plan a wedding outside a church, and don't belong to some kind of club with comparable facilities, there are no other suggestions for alternative venues. If you're looking for some planning tools, there is stuff included here, but most it is pretty common sense.
good advice.......2007-01-27
This book has some great ideas and tips for having a budget-conscious wedding. I like that the author gives the 'bargain', 'budget', and 'bling' ideas for each category depending on how much you want to spend. It has good advice about talking to vendors and even alternatives to the traditional things. Using the suggestions in this book, you can have a fabulous wedding with exactly what you want for $5000 instead of $30,000. Excellent!
Good common-sense advice.......2006-05-25
My husband and I got married last year and our wedding cost under $4000. I thought we were an oddity until I read this book. I believe the most important idea in this book is that big, expensive weddings are a fairly modern invention and are not necessary to have a meaningful wedding. Cara Davis presents three different "levels" of wedding planning, in both cost and logistics: bargain, budget, and bling. She encourages brides-to-be to choose carefully the wedding elements most important to them and their grooms and offers suggestions and tips for how to plan for each element according to their level of importance.
I believe this book will be most useful to brides who are feeling the pressure from mainstream wedding periodicals full of advertisements for the biggest and most expensive everything. "Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot" offers refreshing alternatives, and even peace, for wedding planning.
Awesome Advice and Help for anyone involved.......2006-05-24
Cara Davis, twenty-something author and new bride herself, composes an awesomely arranged mix of advice, d.i.y. tips and lifetime help into the pages of this book. She knows her stuff and does a very good, concise job of explaining and helping along the way.
I will soon be the ''brother of the bride'' and I found this book to be an excellent resource not only for my sister, but for myself as well, how I could plug into the ceremony and how I could apply these ideas of moderation and limited finance into my own life.
Cara Davis does a stellar job at making a labor-intensive, painful experience seem like quite a bit less than that with her tips, tricks and humble advice through the pages of this book. I highly reccomend this book to anyone.

Worth its weight in gold........1998-08-10
Andy Dappen has written a book that uses common sense on stretching your hard earned money further than you thought you could get it to go. A must for everyone to read. The chapter on light bulbs alone is worth the price of the book. I sincerely hope they publish it again. I give this book to all new graduates and newlyweds as a gift, and have been thanked profusely for my gift.
This book contains 1000s of ideas, old & new. Most useful........1998-06-28
I have always read every cheapskate book & article I could get my hands on. I thought I had heard of every useful idea there was. Wrong! I had borrowed the book from the library (good cheap idea), but it was so good that now I need to get several for gifts.

WHERE ARE THE IDEAS FOR FREE MARKETING??.......2000-11-19
I was disapointed--the book contains suggestions such as "use the classifieds" and "try billboards". Most of the ideas were obvious and far from free. Anyone who has been in business for any time at all will find few new approaches. There is a list of web addresses for market research data that could save some search time on line. Overall you would be better off to spend the price of the book on the cost of some fliers to hand out.
Book Description
Cheap Ways To... isn't really about being cheap. While recycling is good, this book doesn't advocate using Wal-Mart bags for your trash cans, using coffee grounds twice, avoiding flushing the toilet or taking advantage of other people's generosity. The fun, innovative ideas found in Cheap Ways To... are designed to help you make your resources stretch a little further while avoiding, or escaping, the pitfalls of mass consumerism and credit card debt. The book is really about embracing a simpler life and growing in your appreciation of the little things.
Get tips on cheap ways to ... Travel. Buy a computer. Entertain. Buy a car. Decorate. Plan a wedding. Buy groceries. Have a baby. Find a pet. Get a Master's degree. Buy clothes. Help the needy. Invest. And many more.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical.......2006-09-09
I've used this book on several occasions and it's very helpful. You don't have to be a 20something to put this book to good use. It has something for everybody and virtually every occasion from hanging out with friends to buying a car and simply relaxing. It's a great buy and a great investment.
ways to save.......2003-05-24
While I think its important to make the best of what you've got including your money, there are some books that really go overboard, thank goodness that this book is reasonable. No, not every bit of advice that was given works for me but nonetheless I did get a lot out of this book. A lot of the advice is common sense and other stuff is like "why didn't I think of this myself?"
There are five sections that include: entertainment, relationships, personal improvement, home improvement, and money. Its a good basic guide for anyone that's looking to save without cramping your style. The authors write with wit and humor.
The book is small, pocket book style. My only complaint is that the section on how to make cheap costumes was bad. There are ways to make low cost costumes and they don't have to be lame. That's my only complaint and its a good book overall. I also recommend "City Chic: An Urban Girl's Guide to Livin' Large on Less by Nina Willdorf"
What a way to save!!!.......2003-03-26
Cheap ways TO... is fantastic. what a way to save money!!! you can plan a wedding, get higher education, find a pet, decorate your house.. for cheap!!!! the authors should be enshrined in the tightwads hall of fame!!!!!
