We found our adventure honeymoon!.......2003-06-07
We couldn't find anything really adventurous that we wanted to do on our honeymoon -- we'd read about scuba diving, snorkeling, paradsailing in travel articles, but we didn't find THE destination for us until we read through this book and found four or five great islands that were perfect. Even better, this book has a giant contact sheet, so it took us no time at all to get to the islands' Web sites and request info. So we're off to the Seychelles next summer for our honeymoon! We can always go to Belize or to Thailand on another vacation. This is a great book for anyone who wants to do something really original on their honeymoon...and then keep these suggestions around for future travel plans. This is one wedding book I'm not handing off to my other engaged friends! I'm keeping this one!
Great ideas!.......2003-03-23
My fiance and I aren't really into the island honeymoon scene, and we heard that this book has a ton of suggestions about cruises, spas, travel abroad, adventure trips. And this book is great!...especially the big cities section that talks about great places in the United States to visit. The list of Websites to check out is enormous, and we loved the packing section. This is a great handbook -- very useful, filled with ideas and a big time-saver. Get this one and use it again for your 1st anniversary vacation.
Don't plan your honeymoon without this!.......2003-03-23
We got this book as an engagement gift, and we love it. It's PACKED with ideas and resources on so many honeymoon spots that we're now considering something more adventurous than we wanted before. Plus, we read about some islands we've never even heard of...they'll be great for our future vacations! That's the thing about this book. It's just filled with great vacation ideas and Web sites, plus insider tips on how to make travel easier and safer...so we're hanging on to this one for all our future trips. And it was so much fun to read about the private islands and special packages you can get, the food and wine tours you can go on, how to get extra perks at your hotel for being honeymooners. This is our Honeymoon Bible.

Originally written in 1986 in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the Titanic disaster, Titanic: Triumph and Tragedy was issued in a second edition in 1994, after the authors got a chance to explore the wreckage. They added some haunting color photographs and extra text in which they muse on the emotional impact of what they call the "artefacts" retrieved: an ivory hairbrush with hair caught in its bristles, a legible newspaper, and a business card with a phone number scribbled in pencil on the back. In its boxy photographic layout and sober prose, the book feels like a historic artifact itself. The authors scrupulously avoid any trace of modern hype, letting the quietly stated facts speak for themselves: the ship was the largest moving manmade object of its day; on the proud clock in the grand first-class entryway, the allegorical figure of Time was flanked by Honour and Glory; one intrepid old lady saved fellow passengers by locating them in the waves with the flashlight built into her cane. "With more than 1500 still on board," the authors write, "and just 47 available spaces in collapsible [lifeboat] D, [Officer] Lightoller instructs the crew to lock arms and form a circle around the boat. Only women and children are permitted to pass through that circle." This book gives a sense of what it might have been like to enter that circle--or be excluded.

Most comprehensive.......2007-08-06
A most comprehensive source of information on this tragedy. Well written and well organized. Nicely stocked with period photographs.
A must have for any library on this subject.
Comprehensive in the Extreme.......2003-11-21
I must say this is the most comprehensive book on the Titanic I have yet seen. Every facet of the liner's history from its origins to the wreck exploration is covered. Each chapter includes pictures of everything connected to the ship. Anyone with any interest in Titanic at all should have a copy.
I did think the authors could have done better with their chapter on the sinking itself though. As it is they wrote little text and tell the story through picture captions! It is as if a book on the Kennedy assassination covered details of the flight to Dallas and then said little about the shooting itself. I also feel the authors were a bit too soft on Lord of the Californian.
Wonderful pictorial record of the Titanic story.......2001-11-22
I found this book in my local library and took it out to read. However as soon as I got it home and looked through it I was enthralled by the pictures. The text was fairly standard fare although some of the earlier chapters had interesting info concerning the planning and construction of Titanic. The pictures steal the show and they made up my mind to buy this book for myself as such pictures need to be looked at and digested over months and years rather than the few weeks one has with a library book. If you have any interest in Titanic - BUY IT.
The ultimate Titanic fact filled book! 1.......1999-12-09
John P. Eaton and Charles A. Haas already known for their very involved Titanic research and dives in Nautile (IFREMER's Titanic submersible} have done a beautiful Titanic book describing stateroom's the voyage building and sinking in a beautiful 352 pages have put together a book which in itself is as good as Titanic: An Illustrated History. Gives insurance claims Philadelphia first class passenger mrs. Cardeza filed for 18 suitcaces , 3 trunks and a medicine kit . A book which many experts (Myself included ) Love . Excellent for any Titanic Buff!
THERE'S NO BETTER BOOK THAN THIS ONE.......1999-11-05
This is the most outstanding book I have ever read. The pictures, the information, it could not have been written better. Anyone would love this book. Those who are in search of unique pictures would find this book invaluable, likewise those who are in search of information, facts, nowhere else seen loss of property claims would too find this book invaluable. Upon seeing this book in the book shop (I did not buy it here) I gave it absolutely no second thought and regardless of price bought it. I am a Titanic historian and I'm picky about the books I buy, and this book is just about the best book in my collection. Don't hesitate, buy it, you will not regret it.

Not bad at all!.......2002-11-10
Ok, this is not the best Sherlock Holmes book I have read but it was actually quite enjoyable! Actually it should be titled "Dr Watson and the Titanic Tragedy." Holmes is in it but Watson is certainly in the forefront.
Despite this I highly recommend this book!
Brisk and enjoyable slice of Sherlockiana.......2002-08-20
In my view , by far the best non Doyle tales of Holmes are those written by Laurie R King and featuring Mary Russell partnering the great man in retirement.Indeed I am unable to resist the somewhat heretical notion that in many respects they are not merely good and worthwhile novels in their own right but-and here many will flinch and possibly question my parentage as well as my judgement--they strike me as at least the equal of all the Doyle Holmes novels,Baskerville alone excepted. The meat of Holmes was the short stories and I ado not feel the rest of his Holmes novels were all that good.
William Seil does not approach the quality of either Ms King or other of the better pastiche Holmesians like Boyer and Meyer but he does give us a brisk and sprightly novel that bubbles along quite nicely and entertains the reader well enough.#
Part of a series from Breese Books of London , in which various authors re-imagine Holmes in a multiplicity of situations this one --narrated of course by the stalwart Watson--sees him on board the Titanic acting in concert with Irene Adlers daughter ,now a British agent to see the safe delivery to New York of British plans for a new submarine. There are plenty os fuspects when the plans vanish--a grim Teutonic couple;an American adventuress ;the brother of the late Professor Moriarty
etc.Stir in a Marxist plot to blow up the vessel as an Anti-Capitalist statement and the plot buils and bubbles nicely.
The book does sag from time to time and the mass of technical detail about the ship's engines etc gets a tad wearisome .Another problem is the knowledge we are burdened with as readers about the fate of the vessel which tends to make us less responsive to the foreground plot than we need to be for maximum involvement.
I was pleased to note the captain and crew escape the disgraceful character assassination that was so marked a feature
of the despicable movie and was impressed by the power of the scenes depicting the sinking of the ship.
Holmes is not drawn especially well but Watson comes across in a strong light and the author draws an interesting parallel between Watson and his passion for writing historical novels with Conan Doyle who had similar enthusiasms,
Good lightweight entertainment that will keep Holmesians happy enough for a few hours.
Great Pastiche.......2002-04-25
I love Holmes and Watson, so I have read many of the pastiche. I believe this was the best of all. Contrary to a few of the other reviews, I thought this Holmes was very true to form, and that the author absolutely nailed Watson. I also thought he did a good job capturing the Titanic scene. I recommend this highly to anyone who likes Holmes or the lore of the Titanic.
Enjoyable read that doesn't go down with the ship.......2000-09-10
No one would be surprised to find that this book features Sherlock Holmes in an adventure set on board the Titanic. And it will also be no surprise for me to say that the ship sinks towards the end of the book.
William Seil sets out to set up an intriguing group of passengers, many of who have ulterior motives, as Holmes and Watson form part of a party protecting secret submarine plans being transported to America on the Titanic's maiden voyage.
The cast includes relatives of better-known Holmesian mainstays - we have Christine Norton, daughter of Irene Adler, and Colonel James Moriarty, brother to the more famous professor. As well as fictional characters, actual members of the crew and passengers of the Titanic play their roles. I was well pleased to see mystery writer Jacques Futrelle given a significant role in the novel. Sadly, Futrelle's stories of Professor Van Dusen, the Thinking Machine, have been allowed to fall out of print, but it is particularly good to see Watson and Futrelle make reference to the Thinking Machine's exploits and to contrast them to Holmes' own during the novel. I'd suggest that his role is a due tribute to one of the many victims of the Titanic's fatal voyage.
As the novel progresses, a number of stories are played out as the reader sees the different suspects duly investigated. The characters are driven by a perceived deadline in the ship's arrival in New York, but we readers know that the iceberg is waiting to cut short the events of the book.
This is Seil's first book (and only to date...), and does show some of the weaknesses of first books - such as a desire to pack too much in. However, his writing style is pleasing and characters fairly well-defined. While not breaking new ground (hardly a requirement in a Holmes' book) is a decent if unchallenging read.
Extremely Disappointing.......2000-04-24
This appears to be a book that wanted to capitalize on two things--the popularity of both the Titanic and Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately, it does neither of them justice. Seil does not have a handle on Holmes'character, and the Great Detective comes across as a shadow of his former self. Entrusting a fledgling agent (and Irene Adler's daughter, no less--OY!) with such an important mission is unrealistic. And, if all else fails and the plot runs dry (which it frequently does), throw in some trivia about the Titanic to fill in space. Neither Sherlockians or Titanic afficianados will like this book. At least this one does not.

Book Description
Titanic: Touchstones of a Tragedy stands alone in the genre of books on the legendary ship thanks to its abundant use of artifacts and memorabilia not previously seen by those beguiled by the doomed White Star Liner. With his use of these striking images and a wealth of facts to tell the Titanic’s near mythic tale in a novel way, author Santini presents readers with a museum’s worth of Titanic treasures—all between the covers of a book.

Good Overall, but images are disappointing.......2002-10-30
Nice book, but the "striking images" claimed by the editorial review is a bit far fetched.
This is a wonderful book!.......2001-06-06
This book gives an interesting glimpse into the Titanic tragedy. It is very well written and researched and is one of the best books that I have read on this subject. It truly does justice to this "grand lady of the sea" whose life was much to short.

A dramatic reading of the newspaper reports of an incredible series of mistakes that led to a major disaster.......2007-06-23
Nearly a century after it went down, the sinking of the Titanic is an event that is constantly referenced. I work in software development and write about business and the series of circumstances that allowed the disaster to happen are regularly used to describe how not to design a structure. There was arrogance and incompetence on the part of nearly everyone involved:
*) The ship was considered unsinkable.
*) Captain Smith had a history of naval mishaps.
*) Iceberg warnings were ignored. After the warnings were received, the ship continued to move at top speed in an attempt to set a speed record.
*) The number of lifeboats was far less than what was needed, after all why put them on an unsinkable ship. The crew had little training on how to deploy the ones that were there.
*) A ship that was close enough to render immediate aid refused to do so, even though they clearly saw the distress rockets fired by the crew of the Titanic.
*) Officials of the White Star Line that owned the Titanic refused to admit to the disaster until they had no choice.
*) The crew and passengers had undergone no emergency training, so no one really knew what to do.
*) The crew member in the crow's nest did not have binoculars, which would have allowed him to sound the alarm earlier than he did.
*) The pilot actually did the worst possible action in trying to avoid the iceberg. By turning so that the iceberg scraped the entire side, the split in the hull was bigger than it could have been. It is ironic that had the ship rammed the iceberg head on, while the passengers would have been flung around, the ship would not have gone to the bottom.
This tape is a dramatic reading by Dave Bodin of the newspaper accounts of the tragedy. He does a very good job in applying the proper amount of dramatic inflection at the proper times. From his reading, you learn a great deal about how so many things all went wrong to cause the ship to be destroyed and so many people killed.

In some respects, a top-level college coach is a lot like a manager in any business. He has to turn a group of talented individuals into a smoothly running team, and he has to produce results that please the fans of his team--the shareholders of the athletic program. Thus, in Leading with the Heart, Krzyzewski reviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at Duke University, and tries to universalize them so they translate to any leadership position. For example, he writes, "Adjustments are not unusual, they are usual. So a leader's ability to think on his feet ... to do things without instruction ... is of paramount importance." Makes sense, as does this admonition: "When teaching, always remember this simple phrase: 'You hear, you forget. You see, you remember. You do, you understand.'"
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach. It would be great if other types of managers in other types of businesses could incorporate these lessons in compassionate, focused, highly flexible leadership, but it seems unlikely. Most managers in business rise through the ranks not because of their ability to lead or inspire but because of their knowledge and competence (if not their connections). On the other hand, it would be nice if each of us, just once, could work for someone like Coach K, someone who could push the right buttons and lead us to our own version of the Final Four. Not likely, but a pretty sweet fantasy. --Lou Schuler

THE BIBLE OF MOTIVATIONAL BOOKS & INTEGRITY: COACH "K" PROVES IT BY LIVING IT. SUPERBLY INSPIRING!.......2007-10-03
I read coach K's book when it first came out and recently re-read it. I often refer to it when I need to put things in the correct perspective. This inspirational book makes it easy to "take responsibility for yourself, and never let "it's not my job," enter into your mind. Coach "K" exemplifies "getting the job done/taking charge." Many a time I'm wondering what to do in tough situations, both in sports and business. I truly ask myself a lot: "What would a guy like coach Krzyzewski do?" I can't think of any coach who exemplifies more decency, integrity, honesty, perseverence, dedication, fairness, family values...you get the point. It appears there are many who admire him and, some will envy him. I say learn from him because he's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, what leading with integrity and values is all about. Many, many, parent's say they want their kids to go to Duke. Why? These parents are specific to say that they hope their children can be part of the positive and integral influnce that "coach Krzyzewski brings to Duke." Major companies have used coach "K"s book to help executives get on the right track. You won't read a better book on motivation for anything in life. Amazing book, about an amazing person. Worth it!!!
Phenomenal leadership book.......2007-09-24
I have read this book and reviewed my notes several times and everytime I gain something new from it. Fantastic book on leadership and thought process of building a team that will excel.
THE worst book I have read by any coach.......2007-08-23
I am a professional College Coach. I have read Coach K's book and I found it to be the worst book I have ever read. The book repeats itself over and over again. Almost like he doesn't have anything really to say so he filled the book with filler. Nothing in the book made me go wow. Nothing was new to the coaching or leading world. Save your money and get a real book on Leadership.
I do not know one Coach in the NCAA world that has not read this book. And I can say that the majority of people agree with me. The ones that don't are just big Coach K or Duke fans.
I am not a UCLA fan in anyway. But I found that John Wooden's book to be more thoughtful and helpful.
Skip this book and find books on Leadership in the business world. Coach K is a great coach, but he can't write a book. And lets be honest it is not hard to coach the 10 best College players like Duke has. It is harder to coach the 10 worst. And that is what we all are looking to get advice from.
Unless you are a B-Ball fan..........2007-07-05
Skip it. Or check it out at the library. I found this book to be so-so. Not any advice you haven't heard before, and too much reminiscing about Duke's good old days.
Thanks for writing this book Coach!.......2007-05-11
I liked this so much I ordered Coach K's Beyond Basketball. What a gift.
