LOVE IT!!!.......2007-09-14
Beautifully written. Beautifully illustrated. This is a wonderful story and the kids (ages 7 and 3) were enthralled. It is a science book that reads like the best kind of picture book. We learned so many things from this and had fun doing it. Very highly recommended.
Juneau 2nd grader.......2007-03-23
If you like to read about different kinds of homes and what lives in them, you would like this book. It is about a cactus that lives for 150 years! In that time about 38 animals make holes and move in. After 150 years it falls over and 10 to 20 more animals move in. This is a great book.
Science that trips off the tongue........2005-12-08
A fascinating book about the Saguaro cactus that reads like poetry. Highly recommended. Warning: you will want to take a trip to Arizona.
Superb and Engaging Book.......2005-10-23
Even though it deals with intricate details of the life of a cactus, it has become my almost 3 year old's favorite book. The visual details are very engaging, and our little one loves to point out each of the animals, and "tap tap tap" along with the woodpecker. This book is delightful, and you will learn as much as your child will, as you read it.
Excellent for young and old alike.......2005-09-21
Excellent book for young and old alike. As an adult new to the desert, it gave me a good, quick understanding of the 'circle of life' of the Saguaro and the critters involved with it. It is nicely laid out, simple to read, and even speaks of spiders and other sometimes scary beings in a non-threatening manner. Really quite a good book. I even sent a copy to my good friend's 6 and 9 year olds and they, along with their folks, really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

Very educational.......2007-08-25
This book is very educational to use in a classroom or an education focused day camp and is not an easy read as a story book at bedtime.
Not your ordinary desert book.......2004-05-12
We have been reading many different desert books for a unit study. It seemed that we kept running across the same old information in every book. Then we read this one! It tells you things that you just don't find in other books. This turned out to be our favorite book. The pictures are wonderful and it is easily understandable by young children, thought adults will learn a thing or two as well! Highly recommended.
This book was full of wonderful pictures and information.......2003-03-30
I have used this book every year as a third grade teacher. It is wonderful as a read aloud for science to illustrate how animals and plants adapt to their environment and rely on other plants and animals for survival. This is one of the best books I have ever read to my class because it is not dull science jargon but presented as the story of the life of the cactus. Don't miss this one for teaching and learning about life science in the desert.
Our third grade class loved your book........1999-11-03
Our third grade loved your book. It gave us a lot of information about the desert. The illustrations were excellent. We especilly liked the use of author techniques such as diagrams, onomatopeias, catchy title and colorful illustrations. We would love to contact Barbara Bash.
Book Description
Here is another model nature journal from a naturalist who has been journaling habitats since she was a youngster. In the desert she sees Gila monsters, watches scorpions with a black light and harvests saguaro flowers with a Native American family that helps her see this unique, arid environment with appreciative eyes. The "collage-style" journal features clippings of articles about animals and plants, stories of the native Tonoho O'odham, her own youthful journal entries, and even her own desert poetry. "Saguaro Moon" is a wonderful way to learn about the desert and also be inspired to keep a nature journal.

Wow! Beautiful, educational and fun!.......2003-03-30
Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini began writing her fabulous books at age 14. In her fifth book, Kristin has taken her journaling habits and transformed them into interesting and educational masterpiece.
Saguaro Moon takes you on a journey through the Sonoran desert (and through the seasons) while educating you about deserts, the plant life, insects, birds, reptiles and other animals. Obscure facts are included along with references to other books, web references, and an invitation to become a Planet Scout. This is a great book for any child, teacher or home educator!
Wonderful Book!.......2002-09-11
This is a fun book that is interesting for anyone to read. It is well designed because there are journal entries as well as informative articles written by the author on every page. The illustrations are full of color and I enjoy the attention to detail that fills this book.
Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini has a talent in writing books that are fun and informative. This book details the changing of the seasons (month to month) in the desert environment as seen by a young girl and her friend.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2003-12-23
This book, written in playful rhyme, chronicles how a "seed so black and tiny" travels through the desert and eventually takes root in the earth, growing into a giant sanguaro.
Helping along the way is a packrat who carries the fruit which contains the seeds "with a great deal of worry." Why? Because he was being chased by a "snake that slid with no sound" who, by the way, is being followed by a "bird that raced on the ground" who is . . . well, you get the picture.
The double-page spreads-done in rich greens, purples, golds, and yellows-illustrate the desert flora and fauna wonderfully. Readers will enjoy the discovering the clever details found throughout the book.
The author has included a "timeline" of how saguaros grow in the Sonoran Desert in addition to a page of "Fun Facts" about the creatures mentioned in the story. Did you know, for example, that coyotes can "dash" up to 30 miles per hour!
This fun read-aloud was a huge hit in every classroom in which we reviewed it. The text's repeating rhyme, written in the style of "This is the House That Jack Built," allowed students the opportunity to predict what the speaker was going to say.
In addition to being used as an engaging tale for storytime, it can also be used to build phonemic awareness and to enrich social studies units on deserts, plants, and more. Highly recommended.

A colorful and engaging story.......2003-11-17
The collaborative effort of author Jennifer Ward and illustrator Mike K. Ranger, The Seed And The Giant Saguaro is an absorbing picture book about how a variety of desert animals contribute to the planting, growth, and life of a Giant Saguaro cactus. The narrative is written in a "This is the house that Jack built" style, with each new page spread adding another line to the saga of the cactus' rise from a little seed. A colorful and engaging story, The Seed And The Giant Saguaro is especially appropriate for children ages 3 to 6.

Book Description
Ask a child to draw a picture of a cactus, and the result will probably look like a saguaro. Indeed, mass media have made this denizen of the Sonoran Desert universally recognizable, and perhaps just as misunderstood. In Saguaros: Desert Giants, Anna Humphreys and Susan Lowell share true stories about this amazing, anthropomorphic cactus that are at least as intriguing as the folklore. A saguaro can grow to be a towering fifty feet or more and live for as long as two centuries. During rainy seasons, a large saguaro can soak up literally hundreds of gallons of water in its expandable, accordion-folded trunk and arms. For uncounted generations, the Tohono O'odham people in Arizona have harvested the sweat saguaro fruits to make syrup and wine. Profusely illustrated with contemporary and historic photographs and other artwork, Saguaros: Desert Giants celebrates these iconic cacti while arguing that the need to preserve their critical Sonoran Desert habitat is more pressing now than ever.

FANTASTIC guide to a fascinating desert plant.......2002-06-15
It's hard to say what the appeal of the saguaro cactus is exactly, but perhaps it is the way people relate to them. Their branches are referred to as arms; the young plants are called babies; and they live under nurse plants as seedlings. More than just being anthropomorphic, these giant cactuses are the true emblem of the spectacular Sonoran Desert. Across the country (far from their tiny growth region), the saguaro is a powerful symbol of the American Southwest. This book is a perfect blend of accurate scientific information and entertaining cultural anecdotes from the mother and daughter author team. It is jam-packed with useful facts, and all are attractively displayed in this beautiful book. The art is as precise and engaging as the well-written text. Definitely a worthy investment!

Excellent, interesting explanations of cacti survival.......1997-04-30
Amazing facts about the little-known but heavily-filmed Saguaro Cactus make this book a powerhouse for young children. Parents enjoy reading to their children because they too learn as they read along. Storad writes in a nice, clear fashion and explains both the "insides" and the outsides of the plant. An excellent book for school libraries.

Invaluable information, even if you're not going to use the exact roads mentioned.
Use this one as the best planning source available and well worth the small investment.
Not so good.......2002-03-31
My brother and I bought this book and used it to plan our biking trip in the Maritimes in 2001, but we weren't too happy with the route selection. Too many of the suggested routes were on main roads that were too busy with traffic. Bike touring is best when you get off the main roads, but this book doesn't help you find them. If you go to PEI, I do recommend that you bike on the clay roads that the book recommends. Don't follow the coastal roads--too much traffic. I like the Maritimes, in spite of this book!

Customer Reviews:
Not that bad..........2006-07-29
Despite the previous reader reviews, I appreciated this book. It describes the ETFs as a tool to use and It explains why. The problem is, I think, that there isn't that much to say about ETFs to fill 280 pages (they are basically a simple idea), so the author has been "forced" to make a wide discourse about investment philosophy and asset allocation to write the book. Probably this approach disappointed the expert readers, who expected something more sophisticated, but it's coherent with the title: "the easy way to get started". Concluding: a good book for beginners, not a comprehensive reference text for sophisticated investors.
Big Disappointment.......2003-11-04
After reviewing the front and back covers, I purchased this book. The author has spent 26 years writing a newspaper column on the subjects of money and investments. The author is not bashful with his opinions. The book describes the only strategy to use in buying securities, was the buy and hold strategy. Holding securities for 25 years. He does not believe in day trading, advising the reader against doing so. The book does not believe in fundamental analysis, technical analysis, or chart reading. It says you can not predict future prices and should not rely on historical prices as a guide. The book spends too many chapters describing stocks, mutual funds, bonds and how to find a broker. This did not leave much room to talk about Exchange Traded Funds. Which was the title of the book. Only one and half chapters were devoted to the subject. The book had potential, but it was a big disappointment.
Diversifing with Exchanged Traded Funds.......2003-04-09
The inner workings of Exchanged-Traded Funds are well explained in Richard's book. Do-it-yourself investors would be wise to learn about ETFs, and then apply that knowledge to better diversify their holdings and save expenses. Richard's book offers the sophisticated and the novice a single-source reference that can make you money over the long run. Building a well-diversified portfolio and then managing it is difficult, but "All About Exchange-Traded Funds" provided me with the insights that only an experienced advisor, like Richards, can offer. If more people had understood the essential precepts found in this book, far less money would have been lost during the past few years. Read it and profit by it.
Title should be "A Little about ETF's".......2003-02-22
This book is more about Archie Richards' personal investment philosophy than it is about ETF's. I'm not sure who his target audience is, but I can assure you if you want to learn about ETF's, you are going to be spending about 75% of your time reading about Archie's personal opinions about the investment world and what is wrong with it. The other 25% covers what ETF's are and how they work. It may be good info. if you want to be the Cliff Claven of ETF's at your friendly neighborhood bar. But if you want to learn how to use ETF's as a viable investment, you would be better off going to the websites of the sponsors for these funds and read their free information. I can think of only one market that can benefit from this book - those of you who have never invested in your life, are VERY conservative and are prepared to buy and hold your investments for more than 20 years. For the rest of you, don't waste your time or money.
