Book Description
How does a bacterial cell grow during the division cycle? This question is answered by the codeveloper of the Cooper-Helmstetter model of DNA replication. In a unique analysis of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper considers the major cell categories (cytoplasm, DNA, and cell surface) and presents a lucid description of bacterial growth during the division cycle.
The concepts of bacterial physiology from Ole Maaløe's Copenhagen school are presented throughout the book and are applied to such topics as the origin of variability, the pattern of DNA segregation, and the principles underlying growth transitions.
The results of research on E. coli are used to explain the division cycles of Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes. Insightful reanalysis highlights significant similarities between these cells and E.coli.
With over 25 years of experience in the study of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper has synthesized his ideas and research into an exciting presentation. He manages to write a comprehensive volume that will be of great interest to microbiologists, cell physiologists, cell and molecular biologists, researchers in cell-cycle studies, and mathematicians and engineering scientists interested in modeling cell growth.
Key Features
* Written by one of the codiscoverers of the Cooper-Helmstetter model
* Applies the results of research on E. coli to other groups, including Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes; the Caulobacter reanalysis highlights significant similarities with the E. coli system
* Presents a unified description of the bacterial division cycle with relevance to eukaryotic systems
* Addresses the concepts of the Copenhagen School in a new and original way

Book Description
This book is unique in the way microbiology is presented. As some of the simplest organisms, bacteria have a close connection to physics and chemistry. Throughout the book an appreciation of how these organisms solve their problems is given. They do so in a way that is adequate but less dependent on the evolution of very sophisticated biological tools that are so prominent in the biology of eukaryotic plants and animals. This simplicity is a consequence of the fact that the Domain of Bacteria separated from the evolutionary tree earlier than the other two Domains. Early parts of the book are devoted to evolutionary processes and mathematics for the study of bacteria growth. Also presented are the physics of osmotic pressure, surface tension, and relevant aspects of biochemistry.
Since this book presents a novel approach to microbiology, it will be appropriate for all microbiologists and students. Even though it is written so that a prior knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and microbiology is not needed, it will be read, studied, and thought about by people with a more physical background.

Description:
We prepared soil with greater populations of bacterial-feeding nematodes, compared to a normal field soil, to determine the effects of bacterial-feeding nematodes on the root development of tomato seedlings. Soil mixed with either pig manure or rice straw was placed in a mesh bag, and then surrounded by an outer layer of unamended soil. Nematodes were able to migrate through a 1mm diameter mesh bag into the outer soil, thus giving greater populations than in soil surrounding a control treatment of a 5@mm diameter mesh bag, through which nematodes cannot migrate. After 28 and 35 days incubation, respectively, the outer soil contained a nine-fold increase in nematode numbers in the pig manure treatment and a six-fold in the rice straw treatment, compared to control soil. The increased nematodes were mainly bacterial-feeders, accounting for 98.2% of total nematodes in the pig manure treatment and 90.5% in the rice straw treatment. Tomato seedlings were grown in the outer soil and root parameters (total length, average diameter, total surface area, numbers of forks and numbers of tips) determined after 5 and 10 days growth at 20^oC. We found that the tomato seedlings grown in the soil containing more bacterial-feeding nematodes developed a highly branched root system with longer and thinner roots.

Description:
Soil communities dominated by fungi such as those of no-tillage (NT) agroecosystems are often associated with greater soil organic matter (SOM) storage. This has been attributed in part to fungi having a higher growth yield efficiency (GYE) compared to bacteria. That is, for each unit of substrate C utilized, fungi invest a greater proportion into biomass and metabolite production than do bacteria. The assumption of higher fungal efficiency may be unfounded because results from studies in which fungal and bacterial efficiencies have been characterized are equivocal and because few studies have measured microbial GYE directly. In this study, we measured microbial GYE in agricultural soils by following ^1^3C-labeled glucose loss, total CO"2-C, and ^1^3CO"2-C evolution at 2h intervals for 20h in two experiments (differing in N amendment levels) in which the fungal:bacterial biomass ratios (F:B) were manipulated. No differences in efficiency were observed for communities with high versus low F:B in soils with or without added inorganic N. When calculated using ^1^3CO"2-C (in contrast to total CO"2-C) evolution, growth yield efficiencies of soils having high and low F:B were 0.69+/-0.01 and 0.70+/-0.01, respectively. When soils were amended with N, soils with high and low F:B had growth yield efficiencies of 0.78+/-0.01 and 0.76+/-0.01, respectively. Our experiments do not support the widely held assumption that soil fungi have greater growth efficiency than soil bacteria. Thus, claims of greater fungal efficiency may be unsubstantiated and should be evoked cautiously when explaining the mechanisms underlying greater C storage and slower C turnover in fungal-dominated soils.

Description:
A potassium-releasing bacterial strain Bacillus edaphicus NBT was examined for plant-growth-promoting effects and nutrient uptake on cotton and rape in K-deficient soil in pot experiments. Inoculation with bacterial strain B. edaphicus NBT was found to increase root and shoot growth of cotton and rape. Strain NBT was able to mobilize potassium efficiently in both plants when illite was added to the soil. In cotton and rape growing in soils treated with insoluble potassium and inoculated with strain NBT, the potassium content was increased by 30 and 26%, respectively. Bacterial inoculation also resulted in higher N and P contents of above ground plant components. The bacterial isolate was also able to colonize and develop in the rhizosphere soil of cotton and rape after root inoculation.

Description:
Two species of Pseudomonas chromosomally tagged with gfp, which had shown antagonistic activity against the tomato pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum in a previous study, were assessed for their impact in the rhizosphere of maize. Plant growth characteristics, numbers of indigenous heterotrophic bacteria, changes in the bacterial community structure according to the r/K strategy concept, and shifts in MIDI-FAME profiles of culturable bacterial fractions as well as total rhizosphere microbial communities were determined in relation to seed and soil treatment with the exogenous pseudomonads. The maize rhizosphere proved to be a suitable habitat for the introduced P. chlororaphis IDV1 and P. putida RA2, which showed good survival after introduction. However, both inoculants showed a small growth-reducing effect towards maize, which might have been caused by the high densities of inoculants used (i.e. competition for nutrients and action of metabolites produced) and/or changes in microbial community structure (both culturable bacterial fraction and the total microflora). Probably, an altered balance among the indigenous maize rhizosphere populations occurred. Thus, the culturable bacteria, as well as the total microflora in the rhizosphere, changed in response to the introduced pseudomonads, and their development was dependent on the growth stage of the plant. The FAME analyses showed that these microbial communities comprised different populations, and were separated according to, first, the method used (direct versus cultivation-based), second, sampling time, and, finally, inoculation level.

Description:
Biological N"2 fixation (BNF) by associative diazotrophic bacteria is a spontaneous process where soil N is limited and adequate C sources are available. Yet the ability of these bacteria to contribute to yields in crops is only partly a result of BNF. A range of diazotrophic plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria participate in interactions with C"3 and C"4 crop plants (e.g. rice, wheat, maize, sugarcane and cotton), significantly increasing their vegetative growth and grain yield. We review the potential of these bacteria to contribute to yield increases in a range of field crops and outline possible strategies to obtain such yield increases more reliably. The mechanisms involved have a significant plant growth-promoting potential, retaining more soil organic-N and other nutrients in the plant-soil system, thus reducing the need for fertiliser N and P. Economic and environmental benefits can include increased income from high yields, reduced fertiliser costs and reduced emission of the greenhouse gas, N"2O (with more than 300 times the global warming effect of CO"2), as well as reduced leaching of NO"3^--N to ground water. Obtaining maximum benefits on farms from diazotrophic, plant growth promoting biofertilisers will require a systematic strategy designed to fully utilise all these beneficial factors, allowing crop yields to be maintained or even increased while fertiliser applications are reduced.

Description:
The aim of this work was to study the synthesis and persistence of acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases in three soils with different pH values amended with ryegrass residues. The organic input increased soil respiration, as estimated by CO"2-C evolution in all soils. The ATP content of the three soils showed a 3-7-fold increase between 7 and 10d in the different soils since the amendment. The dsDNA content of the three amended soils also peaked between 7 and 10d, increasing by 2.5-3.5 times in the different soils. The bacterial species richness increased in the amended as compared to the control soils during the early stages (7-10d) of organic matter decomposition, as indicated by the decreasing values of the Sorensen similarity index between the treatments in this period. Soil amendment increased the alkaline phosphomonoesterase activity by 6, 8 and 15 times in the Vallombrosa acidic, Romola neutral and Vicarello alkaline soil, respectively, whereas the acid phosphomonoesterase activity showed a 6-, 2- and 10-fold increase in the Vallobrosa acidic, Romola neutral and Vicarello alkaline soil, respectively. Phosphatase activities peaked between 4 and 10d, depending on the activity and the soil considered, but activity of alkaline phosphomonoesterase was higher in alkaline soils and persisted longer than the acid phosphomonoesterase activities; the opposite occurred in the acid soil. During a 180d decomposition period, both acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterase activities were related to dsDNA and ATP contents in all soils. Peaks of phosphmonoesterase activity coincided with the changes in the composition of the bacterial microflora, as detected by 16S-rDNA analysis, although no relationship between bacterial community composition and persistence of the phosphomonoesterase activities could be shown. It was concluded that acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases are produced in greater amounts during plant residue decomposition, and that in acid soils acid phosphomonoesterase activity predominates and in neutral and alkaline soils alkaline phosphomonoesterase activity predominates. However, the persistence of newly produced enzymes is determinated by other factors such as soil texture, organic matter content and formation of soil colloid-enzyme complexes.

I didn't notice any difference from the other Frommer's travel books. If you look for something special the "Insider" or "Off The Beaten Path" series are probably more useful.

To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can't do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help--especially if that book is The Book of Five Rings. One of Japan's great samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu's The Art of War it is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
Translated by V. Harris. Japan's answer to the Harvard MBA...Written over three centuries ago by a Samurai warrior, the book has been hailed as a limitless source of psychological insight for businessmen-or anyone who relies on strategy and tactics for outwitting the competition.
Customer Reviews:
Spirit of Zen.......2007-10-19
This is actually a great book on practical Zen in a way of swordmanship in medieval Japan. Two heaven sword tehnique is described there but it is difficult to understand for people who doesn't use to martial art.
Classic........2007-06-18
This book is only a translation of the original. You may not find the extensive commentary you seek. While written centuries ago, Miyamoto Musashi, in my judgment, didn't write a book just about how to fight.
Reading this book with an open mind will surprise the reader. Deep thought and reflection will be needed. The areas to which the principles in this book may be applied (such as lessons in leadership and politics) and the success in said application are only limited to the amount of imagination and study put forth by the reader.
It offers a great deal of knowledge for every day life, and even if you never pick up a sword, or raise your fists, you will find his philosophy extends well beyond the realm of martial arts and battle strategy.
To some readers you will not be able to fully grasp all of the concepts and ideas presented after one reading. This book is invaluable and definitely invites repeated readings as new insight is to be found as your understanding deepens. I'm not sure if a single review could do this book justice because each time you re-read this book your thoughts are guaranteed to be provoked and you will definitely walk away each time with a new form of enlightenment and that is my reason for giving it Five stars *****.
Worthwhile Strategy.......2007-06-10
This is powerful book to read and UTILIZE in your life. While it can easily be taken for face value as a book on physical fighting strategy, it is more than that. One can take many of the thoughts and translate them to a more theoretical use on strategy. For example, a quote speaking of "the gaze" relating to seeing an enemy and their movements: "It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not to be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword". This could easily be translated to business, sports, etc. Just substitute "sword" for the essence of the thought to apply to "business", "army", "team", etc.
The first 3rd of the book is a historical account of events of Musashi's life, and also includes many images of artwork created by Musashi. They are black and white however. The rest of the book is the actual "Book of Five Rings". It consists of 5 "books": ground, water, fire, wind and the void. It is to be noted Musashi after a time found he did not need to follow any particular "Way" and practiced many.
Regarding the layout of the book, I like the footnotes at the bottom of many of the pages which help describe words or thoughts you may not have easily or readily known otherwise.
---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
A good book to have, with worthwhile strategy, although, regarding strategy I prefer Sun Tzu's "Art of War".
Good advice.......2007-01-09
The only good advice I ever got from a book came from this one: "Do nothing which is of no use" (p. 49). The Book of Five Rings has a lot of good advice, but that's the one that speaks most clearly to my condition. The Book of Five Rings must be read as metaphor, because life conditions today are so different from those of medieval Japan. But Mushashi was a wise and powerful thinker, and his ideas apply well beyond battle strategy. He lived integrity: unity and purity of thought, word, and deed, and his rare qualities are always worth studying and emulating.
A study of conflict.......2006-08-14
This book is great for anyone interested in personal development. It is a guide in focused self-discipline. It is also a guide to successful navigation of conflict.
This translation is the best I've read. It is free of superfluous footnotes and pedantic commentary. The commentary that is included before each chapter is brief and helpful.
