As a teacher of preschool German, I found this to be a very educational, fun way to teach my kids German. They enjoyed the words and pictures very much. I took this book to my college German advisor and she is going to add it to her list of books for her foreign language education class.

For the enthusiast of the War of 1812, this book constitutes a must have resource, as it is the first time in which an attempt has been made to compile the nominal rolls of the Upper Canadian militia. For the most part, the information provided consists of no more than name and rank, but where possible, the author provides more; in addition, he has also made an attempt to compile a list of casualties suffered by the Upper Canadian militia, a list which the author admits is far from complete, but which is a commendable undertaking nonetheless. The author also provides a clear and concise background to the formation and participation of the Upper Canadian militia in the war. All making for a unique and useful resource.

The Standard Work on this Subject.......1999-07-23

I was a friend of Randy from meeting him in 1991 til his death. He was one of the most persistent men I ever knew. Born in Oklahoma of mixed descent, Anglo and Native American, he attended the Naval Academy and served for many years. He became an accomplished artist and illustrator. He spent many years preparing his monumental work. Just when it was finished and ready to submit, he went to town on an errand, upon returning, he discovered his entire collection gone--the studio had burned to the ground. And he had to begin all over again. It is a testimony that he finished it and sent it in. Even though Volume Four was published post-humously. Not every man gets to fulfil his life's ambition as Randy did. Every illustration in this multi-volume work has been drawn by him from original materiel. Where relevent the complete text of regulations is quoted. For example, in the period which I research, that from the 1880s to today, the volume three, reprints the complete uniform regulations in the teens, not just the portion on mounted men. Thus, the work is useful also for those interested in the military up to 1943. One must elucidate on the title a bit. As stated, it is not just on the mounted horse cavalry so celebrated in John Wayne movies, but covers all the mounted troops, dragoons, mounted rifles, and cavalry in the period of the frontier expansion, before the Civil War, then both North and South, and the post war frontier patrolling days. Not only is the equipment, both individual and horse, of the cavalryman covered, so is that of the artillery man where it differed. The coverage is relevent to all mounted men--engineers, signalers, and hospital corpsmen, and their clothing and equipment.

Buy if interested in soldiers and marines of Perry's fleet........1998-12-24

This book is of primary interest to the person wanting to know about the soldiers and marines of the US Lake Erie fleet in 1813, and of secondary interest to the person wanting to know about the sailors. It has a short history of the campaign and battle of Lake Erie which is inferior to the account in many general War of 1812 histories. It then lists who shared in the Prize money from capture of the British fleet by ship, who was killed or wounded by ship, the soldiers by unit they came from, the 48 hour volunteers, and the officers and sailors who accompanied Perry from Rhode Island. Then comes a list of marines serving in fleet but not battle with a paragraph each and a list of soldiers and marines who served in battle with a paragraph each.

No one that works at financial markets can afford loosing this book. It's historical and wonderful. The audio book I bought was to listen on the way to work. It's perfect.

Stranger Than Fiction.......2007-09-22

A takeover story that reads like a Jeffrey Archer novel, Barbarians at the Gate is a meticulously detailed account of the takeover of RJR Nabisco by KKR in the late 80s. The authors were WSJ journalists who covered the story for the Journal and the book does a great job of communicating the tension and intrigue of those six weeks in 1988. The book does slack in pace at times but the story keeps you engaged. Recommended.

Great book. Great format. I listened to it on the plane. A must read business book - goes along with reading the art of war and the prince.

Simply compulsive. If you have an interest in business and finance or people, greed and behaviour this is a must read. In many ways this story reflects a broadly held image of the 1980's and its culture of excess that was abound in our worlds financial capitals.

This is a gripping read; the story of the battle for RJR Nabisco and the characters involved contains many elements of the best fiction with the distinct difference of this story being true. Whilst the business finally conducted may not have been the finest work of the venerable KKR it was important mainly due to its Herculean scale which was at the time unprecedented.

This book is simply a must read on many levels. Since it was first published in 1990 it has gripped the imagination of many and has kindled an interest in business reaching far and wide.

To say this book was expertly written, would be an understatement. The authors craft the perfect description of an LBO, with all the players, transactions, and affects on peples lives. How they were able to get inside as well as they did, is really beyond me. This is one for the ages and should be read in Business schools.
