Old dog, old tricks - new dog new tricks.......2003-04-20

This book is a good reference book for those just getting interested or just starting out in motorcycling. Most information contained in the book can be obtained through reading and forums on the web.

Unless you know nothing of the motorcycleing world this would be good to read. Otherwise give it a miss.

AWFUL BOOK.......2001-08-17

I was hoping for some true insight into how and why you would want to cruise long distance on a motorcycle. Instead all it was a regurgitated collection of basic hints and tips about motorcycling in general that is available in even your basic owners manual. With topics such as "How to buy the right bike, and why it's important to check the oil." it was very apparent to me that Mr. Stermer was more interested in royalty checks, then shedding any light on this aspect of riding.

Can you tell I didn't like it, and want to send it back.

Excellent investment.......2001-07-31

I bought this book before taking a 2,600 mile two week tour of seven western states on my SV650. I have owned 8 motorcycles, the first in 1973, so I thought I knew a lot. It was a very good book with lots of advice that saved me the purchase price many times over. It is a small investment that pays excellent dividends if you are planning a trip, unless you have a great deal of touring experience. I also reccomend it if you are considering a bike but don't know what you want.

No real meat.......2000-09-07

Save your money. This is a book for non bike owners, who want a cursory glance at the topic. The author spends too much of the book on non related areas. Engine types, selecting a bike, maintenence, and not enough real meat about the title topic. There are real issues related to traveling by two wheels in safety and comfort, with all the stuff you really need, over a long distance. These subjects are only superficially explored. And anyone who has ridden some of the machines he suggests would make good touring platforms, would know that they would be extreamly uncomfortable over any prolonged ride. Perhaps the authors idea of a tour is a one day hop to someplace, if so, most of his selctions might be adequate, but that really isn't the context of "touring". Another reviewer put it well when he said this book woulod make a better series of magazine articles which tend to be superficial in nature anyway. There are some good points made in the book. Unfortunately for the money they only comprise 20% of the material.

Back to Basics.......2000-02-06

I found Motorcycle Touring & Travel to be a valuable how-to book for learning the basics of travel by motorcycle. It is packed with real world tips that have greatly enhanced my riding pleasure. I still refer to it from time to time when looking for advice on buying motorcycle products.

The author covers everything from choosing the right mtorcycle to selecting the right riding apparel. He also shows how to set up a bike and rider for comfort and safety. Little things make a big difference when traveling hundreds of miles in a day. Just discovering the Aerostitch Wind Triangle, for example, was enough to make the book worthwhile for me. It's amazing how protecting my neck with this little scarf improves my riding comfort. Thanks, Bill Stermer.

I found that I had to read the book slowly and carefully otherwise it was easy to overlook the significance of certain statements. If there is a weakness to the book, this might be it. I am not certain if he oversimplified a complex subject or made the profound seem simple. For example, on page 140 he briefly discusses "target fixation". Although he mentions how "...mental discipline has saved me a number of times" the small amount of space devoted to this subject belies it vital nature. In my own experience target fixation can lead to a life and death situation, so I would have preferred more content to emphasize its importance. The grand scope of his book, however, may have limited the amount of space that he could devote to this and other subjects, so perhaps his is a reasonable compromise afterall.

I was taught that the answer to most problems in life is foung in the basics, and in this, I believe, Mr. Stermer has succeeded. His statements are succinct and to the point and he covers a great deal of territory. I recommend his book to two types of riders: beginners who desire an overview of motorcycle touring; and more experienced riders who want to be spared having to find out on a trial and error basis what Bill Stermer already knows.

I can't believe this book is supposed to be for ages 4-8. I am a college graduate, and I enjoy reading this book and looking at the pictures. Plus...it looks great on my coffee table (when I can put it down).

What we have here in a single volume (in a new revised edition) is a focus on "the critical factors that can make or break the implementation of Six Sigma in an organization." The contributors identify, explain, and then support these principles with real-world experiences and examples. "By placing Six Sigma in this context, this book will, in fact, be useful for any executive, manager, or employee who wants to understand how Six Sigma can help address the particular challenges of their organization." This book was written with empathy for non-technicians (such as I) as it explains:

What Six Sigma is

What DMAIC is

What each of the five components of DMAIC involves

How to use each separate but interdependent component of the DMAIC process

My own rather extensive experience suggests that all organizations can improve HOW they conduct business. Some processes may involve development of new products or services, others production and/or distribution, and still others order processing. Whatever. Not all organizations, however, need a full-blown Six Sigma program. In fact, a majority of such programs either fail or fall far short of expectations.

Among the many substantial benefits of this book is the guidance it provides to decision-makers when they struggle to determine the nature and extent of process improvement initiatives needed. You don't need a full-blown Six Sigma program inorder to, for example, reduce cycle time while improving first-pass yield. Among the most valuable chapters in this book are the last two. With appropriate modification, the principles, strategies, and tactics in both Chapter 24 ("Measuring and Auditing Results") and in Chapter 25 ("Developing Change Leadership Capacity") are relevant to any organization, regardless of size of nature. In my opinion, each of these two chapters (all by itself) is worth far more than the cost of the book but the value of both is even greater, of course, when their material is absorbed and digested at the conclusion of the sequence of chapters. I also want to commend the remarkably informative Foreword, Preface, and Introductions well as are three appendices: "Basic Six Sigma Concepts," "Case Study: Six Sigma in Small and Medium Enterprises," and "DFSS Case Study."

Previously, I have reviewed and praised the works of Forrest Breyfogle, Subir Chowdhury, George Eckes, and Peter Pande, each of whom has written brilliantly and eloquently on the subject of Six Sigma. I continue to recommend their works without hesitation or qualification, as I shall now do also with Rath & Strong's Six Sigma Leadership Handbook as well as the three Rath & Strong Pocket Guides and the Six Sigma Road Map. Given the importance of process improvement, and given how many hours and dollars can be saved by even one improvement, it makes sense to obtain resources such as these and derive full benefit from each.

My own opinion (just an opinion) that this booklet's greatest value will result from frequent review of the key points it provides. It's size gives it almost unlimited "portability" and the precision with which its core concepts are presented adds another substantial benefit.

Everyone involved in an organization's process improvement initiatives (whatever their nature and extent) should have a copy readily available. Allowing for certain prudent modifications, the same core concepts can also be applied to the day-to-day needs of even the smallest company.

I have been a long time Rath & Strong pocket guide customer and was uneasy with the thought of a "new revised edition" of this handy Six Sigma reference tool. After receiving my new copy of the Six Sigma Pocket Guide I was happy to see both new an improved graphics and updated content from the original. I did not think it was possible, but Rath & Strong improved one of the best selling Six Sigma reference guides on the market for over 6 years.

My comments on this pocket guide are the same as those on the other two created by Rath & Strong, except that this pocket guide is probably the one to purchase in bulk quantity so that copies can be distrbuted among everyone directly involved with process improvement initiatives. Thus far, a substantial majority of Six Six programs either failed or fell far short of expectations. Why? Lots of reasons but one of the major ones is dysfunctional teamwork. Hence the special importance of this pocket guide.

Although Rath and Strong do indeed provide a wealth of information about Six Sigma, their "pocket guide" can be of substantial value to all organizations (regardless of size or nature) which need to simplify, thereby improve the process by which they produce whatever they offer for sale. Products, of course, but also professional services (e.g. legal, accounting, management consulting), memberships (e.g. healthcare providers as well as trade and professional associations such as chambers of commerce), and charitable support (e.g. non profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organizations such as college and universities). Chapter One introduces the book's core concept, DMAIC, an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. A chapter is then devoted to each of the five separate but related process components. Rath and Strong explain how this process will guide and inform efforts to increase the ROI of resources to achieve whatever the desired objectives may be. One of this guide's greatest benefits is its ease of use: It can easily be carried within an attaché case, coat pocket, or purse, always available for direct and immediate access whenever needed. Now more than ever before, decision-makers are under great pressure to produce more and better results in less time, and with fewer resources. While the terms "advanced tools" and "pocket guide" may seem incongruous in the same sentence, Rath & Strong has managed to package the essence of higher statistical tool use in a concise and accurate guide which does - as advertised - fit into a shirt pocket.

We have found a use for this book as well as the "Six Sigma Pocket Guide" amongst our Black Belts. Many times, it is reached for over the more thorough (and not so small) "Implementing Six Sigma" by Forrest W. Breyfogle.

Anyone who did not really cement the higher statistical concepts in the 2 - 4 weeks that most Six Sigma training allows should benefit from this book.

I brougth The Six Sigma Handbook, and I was not totally satisfied with it, ¡it has a lot of information about run charts and control charts!, this is not a SS Hanbook.

Lots of reasons but one of the major ones is ineffective leadership, especially during implementation. Hence the special importance of this pocket guide.

With regard to "champions," no organization ever has too many of them. Indeed, few organizations have enough of them. Process improvement (with or without wearing multi-colored belts) is immensely complicated, often frustrating and sometimes discouraging. To those now competing in what Theodore Roosevelt once referred to as the "arena," I remind them of what Jack Dempsey once said about champions: "They get up when they can't."
