Customer Reviews:
Unusable .......2007-06-03
I ordered this book in preparation for my own trip to Colorado & Wyoming because I love my Peterson's Guide for Wildflowers for the Eastern US. This was a horrible disappointment. The flowers are organized by botanical families and species, instead of the usual organization by color and appearance. The key in the back is supposed to be organized by pairs of questions, but the numbering system is confusing beyond use and whoever put it together apparently doesn't know how to indent. I hope to prevent someone else from wasting their money on this book.
A botanical travelling companion.......2007-03-18
The photography is excellent. The line drawings are even more detailed. The descriptions are very useful. The interesting facts are often fascinating. I expect to field test this guide in July when I visit Alaska and British Columbia this summer. That will be the real test.

Customer Reviews:
Beyond Poppies and Paintbrush.......2005-03-25
For those who wonder what they are seeing on a casual walk in the desert, this book is very welcome. It profiles 50 wildflowers and makes mention of the locale of dozens more in the course of the text on the 50 hikes. In this way, one can make flower identification moving from the book to the trail or the other way around. The photos, over 100 in all, are of very high quality.
The author, Christine Maxa, is well-informed and concise. By the time you've read through a few of the hikes and profiles, you realize she's every bit as at ease with wildlife as her portrait with an elephant would imply. She shows not only a familiarity with the flowers, but also a wide knowledge of the pollinators and predators and parasites that dwell among them: the cochineal insect, source of the rich red dye prized for centuries by aboriginal Americans and Europeans alike; hummingbirds, which carry pollen on their heads; bees, which carry it on every part of their bodies; forest rangers, which carry the full force of the federal government when charging the spectacular parking fees described in the "Special Considerations" section of the hiking guides.
One of the nice things about learning about desert flowers is that there are relatively few of them, so that one can become well-versed and appear authoritative in a relatively short time. Even so, surprises abound. American carrot, which appears on many of the hikes, is a real carrot of the genus Daucus, though Maxa does not say whether the root is edible. Scorpion weed and rattlesnake weed, despite their ominous names, are benign and pretty, while larkspur, a beautiful type of delphinium, is highly poisonous.
This guide's greatest strength, fittingly enough, is its information. I had wondered in the past whether teddy bear cholla and jumping cholla were one and the same plant. A quick trip to the handy 2-page index of common and scientific names confirmed that it was. This sort of detail may seem simple, but it's often surprisingly hard to come by, given the widespread fear among Americans of Latin binomial nomenclature. And despite the title's reference to Arizona desert, the flowers discussed are by no means restricted to that state. Eleven years ago in the California part of Death Valley I noticed a widespread infestation of a parasite that resembled a tangle of orange string. Thanks to this book I finally know what it was: Dodder (p.134), a plant related to morning glory that lacks leaves and roots and chlorophyll. Of further interest in the profile are two common names for dodder that at first glance seem to describe mutually exclusive traits: love vine and strangleweed.

This is a excelent guide in many ways: the ride descriptions give you a good idea of what you are up against physically and technically, there is a broad number of rides to choose from, the maps and elevation profiles are well detailed, and the directions are easy to follow. You must have this guide if you want to ride in or near Chico.

"a definitive classic for students of man-made disasters!".......1999-04-10
I was at first skeptical about the man-made disaster story "Tom's Checkbook" but once I but aside my pre-conceived notions, it was a real page turner! When he first obtains his checkbook and has a positive balance - his giddy, infectious happiness that blinds him to the ominous fore-shadowing...gosh, just brilliant writing. Then his decline as checks start to be returned due to insufficient funds. His gradual gained knowledge that each returned check has a bank fee and a proprietal fee due the store to which it bounced. His tearful confessions to his backruptcy lawyer. While reading - one gets the eerie impression that both Tom and his checkbook simultaneously decline into the red. Stunning! This treatment of a "man-made" disaster is poignant and spellbinding! A must read!
Dispicable account of events in history.......1999-02-18
I find that this book only gives the simple facts to a very complicated situation. I feel that the writer should have been more insightful, than breif. If only they had more interesting things to add to the disasters collumb such as curruption and intriging world events it might have cought more attention. If you could right the book again more detailed and on topic you would see that you attian the readers attention.
Book Description
The first illustrated book with full-colour visuals giving a compelling account of the explosion and its aftermath.
On the morning of December 6, 1917, the residents of Halifax's North End witnessed first-hand the terrifying destruction of the First World War when a fully loaded munitions ship collided with a larger relief ship, caught fire and then exploded in the harbour. The blast laid waste a huge residential area as well as the waterfront and several factories.
This book offers a definitive account of the explosion and its aftermath, and the most extensive collection of images -- many in colour -- available in print.
David Flemming recreates the scene on the water when the ships collided and on the waterfront where people watched the fire, and describes how resources were stretched to the limit to create temporary hospital and morgues. He recounts how the Explosion was handled by authorities, how blame was
shouldered and avoided. He explains the ironic twist that led to the explosion being used to calibrate the bombs that
wrought even worse devastation at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Very Good Book.......2001-10-31
It was very cool! It had lots of information and awesome pictures. I like the part about the black plague. This a very good book about disasters. I wish they had a sequel to it.
Great for educators and students.......2000-12-27
This is an excellent book for teachers and librarians to share with a group. The pictures are bright and detailed and there is a lot of useful descriptive information. The book could be used to initiate discussion about the natural disasters as well topics in history, geography, and science.
A must for children and teachers!.......1998-03-02
This book illustrates and explains very well about cyclones, earhtquakes, floods, etc. that happened in the past. For children it's very important to know what kind of natural disasters (still) can happen, all over the world. Disasters is really a valuable book of reference for all ages.
Amazon.com
According to marketing maven and Purple Cow author Seth Godin, the "Television Industrial Complex"--and its nasty habit of interrupting people with advertisements for things they don't want--is dead. Innovation is cheaper than advertising, advises Godin who defines the "free prize" with diverse examples including swatch watches, frequent flyer miles, dog bakeries, Tupperware parties and portable shredding trucks. He explains "Design matters, style matters, extras matter."
The largest portion of the book is devoted to how to sell an idea to your organization. His specific tactics range from irreverent, (let them pee on your ideas) to practical (how to build a prototype). One standout chapter explains how brainstorming can become boring. His alternative, "edgecraft," involves divergent thinking to add something remarkable to your product. His long grocery list of edges (safety, equality, invisibility, and hours of operation) suggest a genuine marketing manifesto. The ideas are bold and insightful, but can suffer from being presented in less than logical order. The book is also diminished by Godin's self-marketing, from using terminology in his previous books to naming key ideas after himself. These advertisements are unnecessary. This nervy little volume is bound to mother many inventions. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Purple Cow was the #1 bestselling marketing book on Amazon in 2003. Now in Free Prize Inside, Seth Godin is back with practical advice on how to put Purple Cow thinking to work inside your organization (big or small, profit or non) to MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. The next big marketing idea is a proven strategy for making your products or services so remarkable that they practically sell themselves.
Purple Cow taught marketers the value of standing out from the herd, which is how companies like Krispy Kreme and JetBlue made it big. But it left readers hungry for more: How do you actually think up new Purple Cows? And how do you get them adopted by risk-averse Brown Cow companies?
Free Prize Inside delivers those answers and much more. It's a fun guide to doing innovative marketing that really works when the traditional approaches have all stopped working. Thirty years ago, the best way to sell something was to advertise it on television. But today's consumers are cynical, and your product or service had better be more than just hype and clever advertising. Even better, it ought to come with a market-changing innovationa free prize inside.
You don't have to spend a fortune to create something cool that virtually sells itself. Think of simple but powerful innovations like the Tupperware party, Flintstones vitamins, G.I. Joe (a doll just for boys), Lucille Roberts (a gym just for women), and frequent flier miles. Free Prize Inside will teach you how to create those kinds of blockbusters at your own company without a bunch of MBA-brainwashed marketers. You don't have to be a geniusyou just need curiosity, initiative, and a strategy for overcoming resistance when you champion your idea.
We're all marketers now, no matter what our job titles. With Godin's help, we can find the free prize that will transform our companies.
Customer Reviews:
Don't let the cover fool you. It's great.......2007-08-14
This is a brilliant book for those who wish to be change agents and creative marketers. The concepts in this book are simply amazing and helped me thrive my business, so it went from regional to international (although the other writings from Seth Godin should be credited for this too).
The downside is that I feel this book (the title and cover) has the feeling it's a joke. Too big of a promise, too vague of a title. It's not a joke.
If you have that idea too, I'd hereby want to convince you to ignore the cover and the (sub)title and just buy the book. (Well, that is if you want to apply change in (your) company and want to have your marketingskills grow exponentially...)
Entertaning.......2007-07-14
Entertaining as always with Seth Godin, just not sure how "new" anything is in here.
Easy Read.......2007-07-06
Seth Godin writes innovative, thought provoking and fun to read marketing books. This book is all of those things. After all, any book that had the first 100,000 copies available inside a cereal box (get it, the Free Prize Inside?) must be innovative, thought provoking and fun.! This is written as a marketing book and so if you are an entrepreneur, have a marketing interest or responsibility, I believe it is a must read.
But I recommend it for everyone else too - because about half of the book is about the most important part of the idea -selling it. So if you are trying to influence change in your organization, sell your ideas to others, propose an acquisition, suggest a new product line or influence others in your organization in any way, then I recommend you read this book.
(Hint - that last paragraph should be all of us, even if we could care less about "marketing" in our company) Read it because it is innovative. Read it because it is fun. Read it because it has practical information to help you sell others on your ideas.
Another classic from Seth Godin.......2007-07-02
Every one of his books, blog posts, articles, speeches, etc, are top notch. This book is no exception.
Good Godin!!!.......2007-05-30
I had some time to sit and read this "mini monster" book while in the terminal at Kentucky Bluegrass Airport and almost missed my flight. The title is apt and the solid details make for continuous thought provocation.
As usual, this author takes his time to simplify and lay out each idea which allows the reader to almost fit oneself into the picture and want to leap into the moment and "become".
Great publication and compliments to the Author.
I did get my "free" prize...at the register!!
Its worth every penny.
