The book has most of the items that are necessary to the traveler, i.e. the section in the beginning, "Smart Travel Tips,"; however, there should be a section describing a brief history of Singapore and there should be a more detailed description of the walking tours, including better maps, of the ethnic neighborhoods.

I am planning on backpacking for an extended amount of time in Australia. This guide is invaluable in planning my trip. I love the series - it is perfect for a budget traveller like me. I don't know yet how accurate the info is, as I have yet to go, but the book itself is well written and organized.

This was my 2nd time using Let's Go guides, my 1st being Let's Go Japan. I prefer them to the Lonely Planet guidebooks in general. They seem to have a less intoxicated following. As with my NZ review, I wish that the authors would've stressed the quarantine & customs issues regarding everything including food.

5 out of 5 stars Good but still has a lot of unnecessary weight.......2004-02-17

Vastly superior to it's competitor, this book still has a few inaccuracies but nothing compared to the mistake ridden Lonely Planet Australia. This new edition by Let's Go isn't too different to its predecessors but it is slightly smaller in size. Every centimetre and gram of weight does count when you're lugging the thing around the vast continent of Australia.

A fair number of hostel listings are in here but not all of them. There are lots of free publications in a lot of hostels with most hostels listed so if buying the book for this reason alone maybe save your money. There is still a lot of weight unnecessarily taken up with stuff such as hotels and restaurants which backpackers obviously never use. Let's Go should produce two versions, one for travellers interested in that kind of stuff and one for backpackers. This book would then be half the size and weight.

This book is good for general information on Australia especially if you've never been here before or don't know much. You don't really need one of these types of books to travel Australia or anywhere else but if you must get one definitely get this over Lonely Planet.

5 out of 5 stars The best travel guide to Australia.......2004-01-27

The best travel guide to budget travellers among look alike guides.

5 out of 5 stars Let's go to New Zealand but you don't really need this book.......2003-05-24

This book would be one of the only country editions where I would say it isn't vastly superior to it's Lonely Planet competitor. It is thinner than Lonely Planet which is great if you're backpacking as it's less weight. If one company's version is a lot cheaper I'd say buy it.

The main difference between this and Let's Go is that this Lonely Planet is written for a North American audience whereas Let's Go is more for your British, European, Australian, South African and the like markets. This means those not from North America may find a lot of the information contained in Lonely Planet as common knowledge, especially historic things and would prefer to have less weight by not having this common knowledge space and weight creating information. Assuming you already know the common stuff Let's Go actually gives you more information as it has stuff Lonely Planet has left out for their space reasons. Since the American education system doesn't teach the basics about the world, American audiences may prefer Lonely Planet but others I would think would get more out of Let's Go. Lonely Planet does have a few colour photographs which Let's Go doesn't but you're going to take your own anyway.

A fair amount of the hostels in New Zealand actually do appear in this book with around the same number in Lonely Planet. Be aware that there are other hostels out there though, so don't completely rely on the book and use the best method word of mouth from other backpackers as well. Of course the price information is out of date as usual.

Actually I'd say don't bother with either as you're just reliving someone else's experiences and it's better to explore for yourself but for hostel listings and background info if you don't know much about New Zealand then this is useful. There is heaps of information in every New Zealand hostel on every part of New Zealand so you don't really need it.

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Impressive.......1999-02-16

While I thought that Let's Go Europe was great, this guide really wasn't as good as I expected. I found myself constantly asking to borrow other traveler's Lonely Planets. While I like the style in which they write, there just wasn't enough information provided. They would only list 2 hostels in a town which had 6, which would really annoy me when trying to book rooms during the peak season. Additionally, I didn't feel that the Let's Go researchers even attempted to go off the beaten path. While I am not the kind of person who needs a travel guide to tell them everything, I think the Let's Go New Zealand has a long way to go. Perhaps once it has a few more years under its belt it will be a more worthwhile read.

I bought just about every guide I could find before my recent trip to Sydney. This is the one I ended up carrying with me at all times. It has the maps you need, and enough basic info on the locations and attractions that you'll always have some idea what to see and do next. While not a substitute for a detailed guidebook that'll tell you more background, this combination map and mini-guide is extremely useful.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best guide for this destiny.......2000-04-25

I find Let's Go guides are always great. But after travelling around a country as big as Australia, something more than accurate information is needed. I used the Frommer's Guide from $50 a day as well as this one. I found Frommer's is easier for organizing a trip where you have to be aware of the very long distances. Information is better classified and very professional. It offers a cut above backpacker's information too and excellent advice on diving and other adventures. (And a detail that at least really simplifies my economy is that prices always have the AUD value beside them.) Of course, Let's Go, printed later, has better information on the Sydney 2000 Olympics and a wider variety of hostels.

          4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......1999-12-22

I used the 1999-Aus book as a guide for my trip to Australia. From the very beginning where it guided me to the cheapest ticket to Sydney, I knew it was a great book. The maps in the book were good and the activities suggested were fantastic. If you are in college or recently out (like me) and you enjoy the outdoors this book is for you. Among my complaints were some of the food establishments suggested: one even made me sick. My other large complaint is that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Aus that aren't reviewed or suggested. Let's go seems to favor hostels above all else. The Final Word: If you need to plan your trip and want suggestions of what to see (anywhere, ANYWHERE in the country) then I whole heartedly suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gave me the security and confidence I needed to venture off........1999-04-08

Not knowing anything about Australia, I was hesitant about taking off on my own but after reading the Let's go book, it seemed like I knew the country. When I got there I felt I had an edge, not only did I know places to stay and where to eat, I learned about a number of unspoiled spots to explore. I've seen other books and this one is definately the best!

3 out of 5 stars not bad, could do better.......1998-10-13

It's an OK guidebook to Australia and I suppose it will improve in later editions. As a local who has travelled around Australia using it and the Lonely Planet, I'd have to say LP is better, Lets Go has a few fairly obvious errors such as names of towns on maps, and it lacks information about some ofthe more remote areas.

          3 out of 5 stars Backpacker--Great. But lacking details........1998-05-30

If you're backpacking through AU you'll probably love this book. But you'll love Lonely Planet even more. Its a decent guide to AU and brushes on the best parts of AU while doing a great job on the "touristy" parts. Lonely Planet is much better.

If you are looking for "decent" eats and stays look elsewhere.

If you want SCUBA reccomendations, don't go here. But for a cheap stay in Cairnes, try the "Great Northern" hotel.

As a student traveler I found that this book helped out more than any of the other travel books. It gives good recommendations, lists cheap places to stay, and has more descriptions of the small towns than any other travel book. My next journey is to the UK and I have already bought a Let's Go book for it.

          5 out of 5 stars I'm really glad I picked this up.......2007-09-28

I have several books on portrait drawing. Some of them are great and some are not. This one falls into the great catagory. What I really like is the first part of the book gives you guidence and exercises to help you learn the skills you need to draw portraits. Some books will tell you a head is shaped like an egg and the eyes are in the middle. Ok great, you know where they go, but if you don't know how to draw an eye, it doesn't help much. I really like the shading section as well. I've done some nice portraits only to mess them up by not shading them correctly. Drawing portraits can be very rewarding and stressful. This book has really helped me overcome some of the more difficult aspects of this art. I think having some drawing experiance is a plus and will lead to better results faster, but even beginners will really benefit from what this book teaches.

So far, this is a very good book on the drawing of figures. Lots of good information on the measurements of the human body parts, and a lot of instructions on the hands, feet, and every area of the human body. I still have a lot to explore in this book.
          Exellent!

5 out of 5 stars Better than anything that I learned in school or college!.......2005-04-13

I am a stay at home mom of 4 boys and after 13 years of staying home, I thought that I would start refreshing my memory. I am a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia and this book did more for me than my anatomy or fashion illustration classes ever did! I had always struggled with my faces and proportions and I bought Brenda's book and in minutes I had a face drawn, proportions correct and it didn't take me the hours or days that it used to and I have even used it with my Adobe Illustrator 10 software! I recommend this book for everyone, because I had always been taught that if you can master the human face or body, you can draw anything!
