Book Description

This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.
Book Description
A comprehensive guide to wild trees, shrubs and flowering plants covering the whole of Britain and Ireland, plus Europe from the Arctic to the Alps. nearly 2000 species are described, and 1450 are illustrated in colour.
Customer Reviews:
how to tell it's a flower.......2005-09-24
easy book with easy categories so you can work out what the flower is by its shape. has colour drawings which help, and gives all the names, local as well. some of the wild flowers turn out to be ones we buy and plant ie. not so wild. Very useful when you come across a plant and can't think what it is.

Customer Reviews:
Not a guidebook.......2004-09-04
Those factoids and stats you're going to bore your friends with when you get home ... you can find them here. What I didn't find was answers to questions, such as: Where are good places to camp? What do I do to enjoy my trip to the reservation, or a powwow? Where are the best places to eat in Hot Springs? That is, things I wanted to know to enjoy the trip.
Better than I thought.......2002-02-15
At first , I didn't think this book was of much help in planning my trip but the more I read it, the more great information I found. I would advise you to read it like a novel and not just skim through it looking for specific information.
Pictures are better than the text.......2000-05-06
I am planning to visit South Dakota this summer and since I manage to turn everything I do into an educational project I have been reading up and writing chambers of commerce for information. This book is written in the neutral public relations politically correct style of a guidebook. (Heaven forbid we ever say anything critical about the Indians or why we're still paying $1.5 billion a year for Indian health care.)In fact I believe the author has a PR background. He conveys a lot of information but he could have made the book much more interesting. For example, the story of the trapper Hugh Glass is one of the best stories ever. Glass was mauled by a grizzly and left for dead by his companions. He vowed revenge on those who left him and literally crawls back to civilization to kill the men who left him. However, the author here really does not get into the revenge theme. I had to get that from a Chamber publication. The pictures in the book are great and I would rate the pictures five stars. However, there just aren't that many books about South Dakota. So if you are going to South Dakota it probably is worth picking up. For an interesting book about the entire Great Plains which includes South Dakota read Great Plains by Ian Frazier, which is a five star book.
Interesting and informative.......1999-08-26
An ideal book for those intending to visit South Dakota. As well as giving places to visit and stay it provides an interesting insight into the history of the state. A few more photographs would be even better.
Book Description
In this first entry in the National Museum of the American Indian series My World: Young Native Americans Today, Naiche Woosah Tayac, a member of the Piscataway tribe, takes the reader through his day at school, traces the history of his tribe and ancestors, and describes his people's ceremonies and customs. Produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution, Meet Naiche offers a rare glimpse into the modern culture and family life of an ancient tribe while celebrating Native American history and traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, an accurate view of today's Native American.......2002-10-12
This is a timely book, especially with the typical flurry of Native American activities that start in November in schools around the nation. One of the best qualities of this book is that it shows that Naiche is like any other American boy: has a family, lives in a house, eats pizza, plays soccer, and wears cargo pants. Native Americans are still the subject of stereotypes fueled by many aspects of society. For example, sports team mascots that reinforce people's ignorance. This book goes a long way toward showing that Native children have the same dreams and needs as all of our children.
This is a beautifully written and photographed book that should be on every teacher's reading list, public library, and family bookshelves.
Much Needed Resource for East Coast.......2002-09-24
Having seen an advance copy of this extremely informative and enjoyable book, I can urge teachers and parents looking for entertaining material on how Native Americans in the East live today to buy this book. It tells the story of a multi-tribal boy and his daily life. Dr. Tayac has an engaging writing style and the history and culture are presented in a very accessible manner.
Native Boy Tale Charms Kids of All Cultures.......2002-09-24
Naiche is described so stirringly in this book by Dr. Tayac that any native or non-native American would want to know him. Many American children in 2002 grow up multi-culturally and this wonderfully written children's book clearly evokes a compelling portrait of Naiche's world. The richness of Naiche's Indian culture will expand the horizons of any child who reads this page turner.
Meet Naiche Hits the Mark.......2002-09-24
This book will inform and entertain youngsters from second to sixth grade. Youngsters from about third to sixth grade can read this book independently while first and second graders can have it read to them. It demonstrates the daily life of a real native child and shows how many American Indian children live in the eastern region of the U.S. today. It also corrects common beliefs that many youngsters between ages 6 and 11 or 12 hold, that native children live in teepees and wear deerskin clothes etc. The author, Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, a Piscataway Indian and Naiche's cousin writes clearly and is obviously familiar with her reader and subject. She knows Naiche and his family well and communicates this to her audience in a interesting manner. The photography and the text mesh beautifully to tell the true life story of a contemporary native family through the eyes of a child.
Book Description
Featuring a day in the life of a young Hopi girl living in Arizona, this is the second book in a series produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution. Meet Mindy: A Native Girl from the Southwest takes the reader on a journey into the rich history and contemporary culture of the Hopi tribe, as seen through the eyes of one of its members, 14-year-old Mindy. Mindy proudly describes her family and her village, talks about the traditional coming-of-age ceremony that prepares her for later marriage and motherhood, and much more. John Harrington's photographs capture the vibrancy of a girl who lives successfully in two worlds.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Addition.......2005-03-31
I couldn't resist a book with my name in it, and I was pleased to find that this book was very good. It follows Mindy, a teenage Native American girl of the Hopi and Tewa tribes in Arizona, through the Corn Grinding Ceremony and the Yah-ne-wah Dance. The majority of the book is told in the first person in simple, readable language easily understood by 4th to 6th graders. A few pages at the beginning give a brief overview of Hopi history and culture, and a few pages at the end take readers through a description of a Hopi year through the seasons. The "About the Author" section starts the book, which makes for a weak beginning. Nonetheless this book is a browser's delight. Every page has brightly colored photographs illustrating the story. Not to mention, it is full of information about Hopi culture. This book will find a home on school and public library shelves.
Following Mindy through her coming-of-age ceremony.......2004-01-15
The second book in the impressive "My World: Young Native Americans Today" series from Beyond Words Publishing, Meet Mindy: A Native Girl From The Southwest by Susan Secakuku (and profusely illustrated with the color photography of John Harrington) introduces young readers to Mindy, a girl who tells of the Hopi and Tewa peoples of Arizona. Following Mindy through her coming-of-age ceremony, as well as offering an amazing look at Hopi culture including agriculture, weaving baskets, making clay pots, traditional dances, and much more, Meet Mindy is a captivating look into a rich and enduring Native American culture.

My Great-Great-Great Uncles.......2004-06-26
My grandfather gave this book to each of us it is the story of my great great grandmother Amanda(daughter of H.M. and Fannie Short Smith)Lane's brothers. From the stories I have heard through the years it is written exactly as they told it, and for not having any education I was pleasantly surprised with the grammer they had.
the boy captives.......2000-09-22
I am very excited about this book and the history,This story is about my family ,, Frances Short Smith is my Great- Great Aunt ,, I recall the stories from my Grandfather ,, and looking at the origanal book was so exciting ,, this is a must for history buffs ,,,,
Excellent first-hand account, not "politically correct".......1999-11-11
By pure luck, I ran across this excellent first hand account of the Smith brothers captivity by Comanches in Texas. Written before a revisionist philosophy dominated history writing, their accounts of Indian raids and murders in Texas in the 1870s are the opposite of what is usually written or shown on screen today. My sympathies are with the Texas pioneers who suffered so much. Outstanding reading from such a little book.
Amazing Book!.......1999-11-06
Amazing story of a boy who was captured and lived with the Comanche Indians for five years. He actually became a Comanche and identified as an Indian while he was with them. Fought with them against other tribes and the US army, etc. Told in an absolutely matter of fact manner. Written in 1927 so not "politically correct" but gives an amazing view of frontier life and life with the Indians. It is in print.
Phenomenal Story - Told like a campfire story........1999-11-02
I believe this book has recently underwent another printing. New printings of this book can be found sparsley in various shops within a hundred mile radius of Junction, Texas.
This book is a rare treasure. Excellent story of two young brothers abducted by Indians and sold as slaves to various Indian chiefs. One was actually sold to Geronimo.
Eventually, the brothers were recaptured by American soldiers and returned to their families.
Great tales of survival!

ASIN: 3906801055
Release Date: 2006-08-15 |
Book Description
Exploration and radical change have distinguished New York painter Carroll Dunham's drawings and works on canvas since the beginning of his career. Drawings 1984-2004 documents 20 years of controlled yet delirious lines wrapping around biomorphic landscapes and curling into eruptive blobs and gobs, vividly colored planets and eyeless demons in taut interiors. Klaus Kertess's essay rightly places Dunham among "the explorers of line, Pollock, de Kooning, Twombly and Marden." Limited edition of 150 copies.
