I really don't see the point..........2006-05-01
I don't really remember much about this book, except that it seemed to me to be completely unremarkable. There was nothing in it that captured my attention. And I have RARELY if EVER found a book that I didn't like.
I remember that it was required reading for my ninth grade english class. In High School, I enjoyed english class, and pretty much all of the books we would read. This book was the bane of my ninth grade existance. It is possibly the most boring piece of prose I have ever encountered. As far as I can recall, some guy helps a bunch of nuns build a church. I see no point in the book in general, and did not find it in any way 'compelling' as the first paragraph of the story so loftily proclaims.
The book didn't inspire me in any way. I think part of the problem was that over description got in the way. I have found this to be a problem, even with some of my favorite authors. However, in those cases the story was good enough to justify the over description not bothering me. Not in this case, I'm afraid.
To put it simply, this book just wasn't interesting. I haven't read any of William E. Barrett's other books, but I hope that they aren't nearly as bad as The Lilies of the Field.
Good Book.......2005-03-16
This book is mostly teaching you to be helpful and to always respect someone who you just met. In this book Homer Smith is on the road and meets up with nuns who need help with everything. They wanted to build a church but needed help so Homer decided to help out. As the story went on they all got closer and freindly. But sometimes with their accent they sounded as if they were mad. At the end they build the church and Homer made new freinds. I think this book teaches a lesson to the young and is a very exciting book.
Touching and Easy to Read.......2004-03-30
This is a touching novel. It is easy to read and very enjoyable. The characters are well discribed and easy to associate with even if they are of very different backgrounds than most, and make a very unlikely group of friends in the novel. I would recommend this novel to any, especially younger readers. It has a lot to teach people of all ages, and is entertaining at the same time.
a review from a student.......2004-01-16
Lilies of the field was a good book yet, it really didnt catch my attention. I liked the fact that it showed that different cultures can mix and that they strongly believe in something, but still did not make me want to read it more. This book, though, was still very inspirational. It taught a very good lesson, that you can finish something if you try. i enjoyed parts of it, but not all.
very good HMS2004.......2004-01-15
I LOVED IT

Glorious Genus of Lilies.......2000-06-17
I really don't see why this book should be out of print ! It's an a-z of one of the most interesting plant families there is. Along with the historical and botanical description of the lilies and related families come beautiful colour prints of the plants mentioned. These were instrumental in hooking me onto the worship of these beautiful plants. To this day, I dream of going to Japan to find a wild specimen of L. brownii..all because of this book! So start up the printing machines, please!

Andres, Lily's art professor, a handsome South American exile, matches her hurts with a secret cache of his own. Ted, her brilliant fiance who shares her past, thinks of Lily as his virgin bride, untouchable before their wedding. And now, torn by conflicting emotions, Lily Beach is about to make a fatal mistake. She is going to fall in love.Erotic and illuminating, "Lily Beach" glows with revelations into a woman's deepest needs, as it shows us the shimmering webs that can entangle both the heart and soul.

Loved it.......2006-03-01
The book really takes you through the trial of Lily Beach's struggle to become her own person and not fall victim to the demons that plauge her. It is about a woman's struggle for freedom, self expression, and love.
One of my favorite books........2000-10-08
This book was so good, I waited a few months and read it all over again. Originally I borrowed it from the library, but after I read it I had to go out and buy it. It's simply the kind of book you can't put down.
FIELDS IS A TALENTED AUTHOR TO SAY THE LEAST.......2000-06-19
Jennie Fields is the author of one of my favorite books, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry. As soon as I finished that book, I checked to see if she had written anything else and came upon this title. The jacket cover didn't exactly scream for me to read this book as it describes "how it takes place in the '60's and Lily has discovered that sex is a Pandora's box" but I wanted to see if Fields was a one-book wonder or if I had truly found another author that I would loyally follow.
From the first page until the last, I loved everything about this book. Fields' portrayal of Lily as a brooding, gifted, Bohemian artist draws the reader into her life where women are not her friends but men are unexplicably drawn to her. It follows Lily's life through her marriage, motherhood and what finally frees her from the secrets she has lived with. All the characters in this book are richly depicted. You will fall in love with Lily Beach and root for her to find that place within herself where she can find happiness. Jennie Fields is definitely the author to take you there. I can't wait for her to come out with another book.
Compelling, deep, addictive love story.......1997-04-19
Lily Beach is a novel that has something for everyone. It is a book with a truly great story. If you enjoy romance novels this book is one of the best. The story draws you in to the point where you miss the characters when you put it down. You feel yourself becoming Lily, feeling her joy and pain. When the book if finally over it is as though you are saying goodbye to a friend. It is a perfect mix of love, action, romance. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading- love stories or otherwise. It is a compelling, addictive novel. You feel yourself wrapped up in the characters, the setting, the life of the story. You will find yourself thinking about it even after you have finished reading it

Geared for neophytes - not a useful publication for most.......2002-05-24
Provides a cursory look at a consultant's life and some of the companies one would normally consider, along with many smaller companies that many people wouldn't have access to. Better information is likely available elsewhere, including the Internet and other publications.
good basics.......2001-10-28
This book asks each of the top consulting firms to answer a set of questions about what their firm is like. As expected, the answers are biased, but still helpful. For a more unbiased insider's view of each firm also try the Vault Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms, which also ranks the leading consulting firms based on a national reputation survey.
good, but the Vault guides are better.......2001-09-21
In my opinion there is more and better objective information on consulting careers in the Vault Career Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms and in the Vault Guide to Case Interviews, which have the added benefit of being able to be purchased on vault.com and downloaded immediately. Good luck.
fair.......2001-09-19
Good guide, but the Vault guide to consulting firms is significantly superior in my opinion.
vault consulting guide is superior.......2001-09-09
more useful and third party information in the vault guide

Mavericks PAST TENSE - the roads are all paved now.......2006-07-20
Well, up until 2001 this book was relevant.
Since then and especially since 2004, most of the roads
this book calls 'off-road' are now all paved.
It is completely out of date.
The only think the government in Oman hasn't paved
are the DUNES.
Here are some facts, just a few of the many that have changed:
Sorry, even the big Jebels (Mountains) are paved now. I drove up then when they were all lose falling rock and norrow as heck.
Now, safe as daylight.
As well the road from Sohar to Ibri is almost all paved !!!
Masirah Island is all paved now! Incredibly fast, and a new 5 star hotel is to open shortly.
The highway along the coast from Muscat to Sur is 80 percent done !
The road to Wadi Bani Khalid, paved years ago.
They are also building a new airport in Sohar.
And a connecting highway down the coast road from the UAE into SOHAR. The UAE government has already bought out hundreds of fishermens homes. UUHHH>..horrible right. Fisherman now live in the mountains.
This place is less and less about culture and more and more about the largest hotels and capitalism in fast action.
Sorry, I have met the author in the desert once, nice guy, if not totally enamoured with his own wonderful self and travels.
And profiting by bringing American military types to 'Oman' on sort of tourist holiday package. And yanks who are surprised not to see all the locals holding AK-47s....mmmmm well maybe they should READ some books before they join that tour.
Peter is a great story teller, and I suggest that he put his stories in book form, as they are quite nice to hear.
Perhaps bedtime stories for children about Sultans, Walis, and American fathers who travel and struggle with parent hood while
adventuring.
haha..you might as well bring them to DISNEY LAND. This is not Oman of the 1970's. This is a glossy new mercedes and safer than a gated community.
I don't recommend spending money on this book new, buy it used if you must, but new, why it is out of date with facts and figures.
Great.......2000-11-29
I met that guy last week as i walked through "Wadi bani Khalid" He really lives in Oman and he knows the country. You can book a tour with him on "Mark Tours" Further info under "arabia felix.de" or "oman.de"
he is a really funny guy.
The Best.......2000-09-28
Peter (a.k.a. Peachy) Ochs knows Oman. He loves the land and its people. It seems he has explored every inch. We were fortunate to have him as a personal guide in February 2000. The Maverick Guide and his personal insights provided an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend this book to every traveler to Oman and to anyone interested in this uniquely beautiful part of the Middle East.
This Is THE Guide To Oman.......2000-06-27
The best (and one of the only) guides to a very pleasant and seldom-mentioned country, Ochs has done a wonderful job of giving us a very interesting intorduction to the culture, langiage, history, religion, cuisine, customs, geology and attractions of the safest and most attractive of the Arabian countries. Included is a wealth of information that every traveller will need to know before embarking on their trip. Also are hundreds of restaurants and sundry attractions for every taste and inclination. The rules and regulations are delineated carefully so as to prevent mishaps and fortunately, Ochs has provided for his readers, not merely the "tourist" side of Oman, but many facets of this beautiful and fascinating country that are generally overlooked by the typical sightseer. if you plan on visiting Oman, or just want information about the people or the land, this is the book to get.
Review published in 'Adventure Oman' Magazine Summer 1999.......1999-12-18
This is a fairly hefty tome, written by local tour company manager Peter J Ochs II, and published by Louisiana-based company Pelican. With only eight colour pages in a dollop near the front, the book at first looks a little dull and inaccessible, but persevere. Ochs' turn of phrase is wry and easy to read and the pages are packed with information.
The frequent detailed maps that accompany the descriptions are very useful, although as with everything printed in a rapidly changing country, dating quickly. (This will be updated in the second edition, not yet available directly in Oman).
The numerous hikes, drives and trips that are outlined are excellent. However, the reason to buy this book is not for Ochs' encyclopedic knowledge of the country, its people and its history, but for the throwaway lines and personal experiences that are scattered throughout the text. A good sprinkling of spice in a dish that has been served many times.

Excellent inspirations and reference book for the designer.......2000-06-19
If you've ever had a client that said, "how fast can you design a logo for me?" or, "can you 'whip up' some business cards for me by next monday?" then you know what it's like to have an unrealistic deadline and also be drained of your creative juices.
This book shows some of the best business cards and letter heads you've ever seen. They can really get those creative synapses firing away and get you inspired to develop a new layout you would have never thought of otherwise. I have this book on my reference shelf and I consult it quite a bit. Some (but not all) of the letterheads and business cards identify the type of paper and the cost associated with production which can be very insightful and prevent you from being "too inspired" and go beyond budget.
Superbly done photographs of the materials helps you to almost feel like you can touch the different types of paper. Excellent descriptions are also included.
