5 out of 5 stars A New Yorker is impressed.......2002-09-14

I'm an editor at Frommer's Travel Guides, and I worked on this book; I can tell you that Cheryl Farr Leas is a thorough, dedicated REAL New Yorker, with attitude & skills. This edition of the book required a lot of new information about how transit was affected by 9/11, updated security measures, and the latest (as we went to press) about what was open, and the latest information/predictions about what is going to happen at and how to visit Ground Zero.

This is a book I've used for reference because even we New Yorkers don't know every neighborhood, every dining bargain (though we like to think we do).

When friends are coming to town, I go to this book to recommend hotels that they'll particularly like because the descriptions really give you a feel for the ambience of the place, who would be most comfortable there (and places some people WOULDN'T be comfortable in).

New York is one expensive town, and I particularly appreciate the tips for low-cost (and free) entertainment: bars with no cover charge where you can hear live music, ways to get breaks on theater tickets, a list of when some cultural institutions have free admission. It's a good book to have around even if you don't have friends coming to town!

5 out of 5 stars Easy-to-use, for the perfect Economist.......2002-06-13

I just love this travel guide to New York City. Written with a spirit of discovery and frank commentaries, one can't find a better budget guide book than this. The book is categorically divided into different segments representing different activities from dining to places-of-interest. The range of choices in food, accommodation and travel hot spots will tickle your desire to go on a trip to NYC but immediately. It offers a wide array of prices and quality of products to expect in NYC: from posh Plaza Hotel that "looks like a cake sitting opposite Central Park" to the economical Sweet Hill Intl Hostel in North Mahattan; from cheap F&B to the mouth watering French cuisines; from free Staten Ferry rides to the elite class' pastime of scaling the Empire State Building - Frommer's got it all there. It's a all-in-one book with a free map and subway notes. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Tattoo it , pin it, handcuff yourself to it........2002-05-17

Very thorough, full of info on prices, how to get around, what to see and do. all guide books do that i guess, but this covered a lot of ground and didn't seem to be written just for mom and dad and the kids. it saved a lot of time and guess work and pointed me in the direction i wanted to go.

This is one of those great little purchases that pays you back in ways that you wouldn't expect. The author delivers on all the usual tourist friendly fare, but as a local, he digs in deeper to give you places and events that few travelers might find on their own.

The Met. Highlights Tour, a walk over the brooklyn bridge, Grimaldi's pizza, and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, are just a handful of our new "must do's" that we'd never have found without this book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the little Trianon.......2001-07-17

The little Trianon and gardens have been almost as legendary as it's designer-creator, Queen Marie Antoinette of France. It's here, in this paradoxical, magical realm, where the initial notion, the vicarious allure, for this oh! so tragic a woman has been forged. In this book the reader gets a unique and unexpected first hand gift from the so often missunderstood and enigmatic queen. For 'Views and Plans of the Petit Trianon at Versailles' is the work of Marie Antoinette herself. This one album she thought of, as she strolled about with Fersen or her beloved duchess of Polignac. Here is where she lived and entertained so memorably. The first Trianon was built by Luis XIV for Madame de Maintenon (for a great article on Maintenon look up Luis Auchincloss' 'False Dawn') the petit Trianon was built for Madame de Pompadour(who never saw it finished) by Luis XV. Though the chateau and gardens where re-interpreted by Marie Antoinette when Luis XVI offered it to her later. 'Views and Plans of the Petit Trianon at Versailles' with an introduction and content by Pierre Arizzoli-Clement, dedicated to the memory of Pierre de Nolhac (original Marie Antoinette biographer) is a curious book. As I waited for the postman I imagined the book was perhaps a good collection of modern photographs, and maps. It turned out to be so much more! It's a faithful copy of souvenier albums Marie Antoinette used to offer her most august guests. It contains copies of original XVIIIc graphic maps of the interior and exteriors and little theater, etc of the petit Trianon. Also water color expressions of the gardens, the belvedere, the hameau, etc. Beauty and talent rules here. There is a depth and an originality here that's at odds with the overall notion of the wretched queen. So often dissed as the 'feather head' spendtrift. What were Marie Antoinette's intellectual powers, one is bound to ask oneself, specially after admiring her taste and savvy in decoration and design? It's true her riches were wrought by the sweat of many. Was she consciously aware of it? Was she just following a pattern? Is there something she could have done to prevent her bloody end? How much did she understand of the government of France a dinnosaur about to dissapear in quicksand? Was she smart enough to foretell that an end to the feudal system would cause opprobium and death to her, her husband and children? What did she say to Mirabeau that fateful morning at Saint-Cloud, that had such an effect on him, were hers the words of a silly and fatuous woman? Her smooth machinations at the Tuilleries. As her spending, she spent no more or less than Pompadour, and she, not a noble, got to die serenely amid porcelain and lace. If Marie Antoinette would have died thus, I bet we wouldn't entertain the interest that so many of us have for her today. The preface is first class and offers many new pepper grains for us, watchers of Marie Antoinette. You'd get to know who got the album, what it looked like originally, who were her favorite brother and sisters, and what sister she didn't like. Buy the book. The tome is absolutely delicious and is the real work by the real girl. It could be treasured among your Olivier Bernier, Ian Dunlop, Stefan Sweig, Andre Castelot, etc, etc. Or could be given away as a smart wedding present, At first it seems somewhat somber though it soon emerges in triumph for it's originality and place in history. The direct, personal concept from one of the most

scrutinized and absorbing queens of all. For another good, if earthier, peek into her world, look up 'The Private Realm of Marie Antoinette' by Marie-France Boyer, a pictorial with photos by Francois Halard.

                    Book Description

When Marion Dutilleul enters the service of the Marquise de Montespan, she never imagines that her ability to recognize scents and to blend them into perfumes will win her the favor of Louis XIV’s mistress. But the marquise quickly has the young girl creating new perfumes for her. Eager to please and hopeful that her olfactory gifts will win her recognition, Marion concocts memorable fragrances. Then, to her horror, credit is bestowed on someone else. Marion feels betrayed.

Now Marion opens her eyes and ears (in addition to her nose!) and realizes that beneath the splendor of palace life is a place teeming with deceit. To survive, she must use her keen sense of smell not to create perfumes, but to thwart those who would do her—and one of France’s beloved monarchs—great harm.

                        Book Description

This comprehensive volume documents for the first time twenty-one châteaux and pavilions commissioned by Louis XIV, France's great builder-king. These royal buildings, and over forty architectural ornaments enriching their gardens, are illustrated in breathtaking watercolors by authors Andrew Zega and Bernd H. Dams. Depicted are several of the most influential structures in all of Western architecture, such as the palace of Versailles and the magnificent lost complex at Marly, which contemporaries deemed a veritable "Paradise on Earth." The authors give full attention to unrealized projects and depict completed structures not as they stand today, if indeed they stand at all, but as they were originally designed by the leading architects of the day.

Meticulously prepared over many years, Palaces of the Sun King presents a wealth of historically accurate watercolor illustrations, complemented by a sophisticated narrative, that together offer a fundamental reappraisal of the architecture of the reign of Louis XIV. Modern academics have clarified the function of the political and social construct of the Sun King, but the nature and extent of the parallel architectural revolution which Louis XIV engendered have remained largely unquestioned out of veneration for a national treasure. Time, too, has seen the disappearance or destruction of many of the châteaux and architectural designs commissioned by the king, and in deciding to recreate lost buildings and unexecuted designs, the authors open new realms of discovery for a subject heretofore deemed thoroughly understood. Here, then, the Sun King's masterworks are reconsidered and deconstructed, providing a work of groundbreaking investigation that will both fascinate and inform.

3 out of 5 stars ONLY THE SUN KING COULD AFFORD THIS BOOK.......2006-10-20

This book is a huge disappointment. When i picked it up at border's i assumed at that price it would be spectacular..it is not..it's an odd book with usual images and hard to follow text. I had wanted to see the book because you rarely hear anything about Marly, the kings favorite palace, if Louis liked you, he would invite you to Marly, it was spectacular and you do get a feel for it in this book, but not enough to pay this staggering price. It's a mediocre book, with a shocking sticker price...just buy the Montclos book on Versailles, now that's a GREAT book and well worth it's price.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the many structures of Louis XIV!.......2004-08-14

This book covers many structures, commissioned by Louis XIV, that were either built or were designed but not executed. The pictures that the authors did themselves are spetacular! The text is also above average. I however must warn you it is not worth $135.00 which is the book's retail price. The book's length was a huge dissapointment. It is only 208 pages (not 224 as they say in the book description) which includes the table of contents, index, bibliography, etc. The authors did not fill the pages with as many illustrations and text as I would've liked. If I had it to do over again would not pay the retail price for this book. I would buy a used one instead. Overall though, despite its length, the book does provide the reader with an in-depth look at the exquisite architecture of the Sun King.

                          Book Description

The Palace of Versailles...centers on the life of psychiatrist Sam Carmine, torn between his commitment to his work and his personal needs. He becomes a nationally known figure when he is appointed to the leadership of a major psychiatric facility. His path to this appointment, the nuances of feelings and events in the lives of his friends, family and patients are the substance of this touching and helpful view of human nature.

Parallel plots concern the staff and their emotional and intellectual growth in learning to work with patients, as well as the polarity of joy in treating patients who can be helped and the sadness and sense of failure when treatment fails. The patient's personal stories, their intense suffering and satisfaction in achievements, and their feelings toward the staff and each other are interwoven. Intrigue, mystery, and surprise take the reader on an emotional roller coaster. The title, The Palace of Versailles, juxtaposes the French Versailles with an American Versailles, and implies comparison of fantasy and glitter to rational acceptance of life with knowledge that it can be changed.

Dr.Sam Carsten, the warm and loving central character/psychiatrist, in this book, is on a fascinating life journey. He has a burning desire to help elevate the pain and suffering of people struggling with mental illness. He had seen too much of this pain just months ago as an army doctor in World War II. His own enotional baggage proves to be his albatross as he begins his compelling career path. He is led to follow Dr. Anders, founder of the renowned Anders Retreat, in a beautiful quiet valley in the rural ozark town of Versailles, Missouri (not France). Guided by his wonderful mentor, Dr.Sam struggles with a failed marriage, the death of his domineering surgeon father and his development of a successful psychiatric career. His professional success and personal failures in this unusual setting make for startling paradoxes. Murder, romance and vivid descriptions of small town Missouri and its ever changing seasons keep the reader glued in attention until the surprising ending. Author, Jay Hoyland's apparent experience with challenging mental patients must have been the foundation for this insightful and haunting look into the lives of a fascinating group of troubled patients. This is a hands on trip through the evolving world of modern psychiatric treatment. Totally fascinating!

5 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive history for adolesents and tourists........1999-02-25

I found that this book provided a thorough comprehensive history of the Palace of Versailles and the social history that took place there. Primarily focused on the Palace and secondary chateaux, it provides students with good insight into the construction methods of the times. For those who enjoy gardening, it goes a long way to explain the need for elaborate gardens. The most interesting aspects of the book focus on the early history of construction and garden design. A good style for young readers, it would also be servicable to tourists visiting Versailles for the first time. The major drawback is the use of black and white photos.

                          3 out of 5 stars interesting high-school level text.......1999-01-29

This is not a book for those who have a more detailed interest in the palace or in French history. It deals with the building of the palace under Louis XIV but little from the XVIII century or later. There is some social history as well. If your child needs it for a project or you represent a local library it's a good bet but not for those of more scholarly interests.
