A bit of a let down.......2003-12-19
Earlier dive guides I have used have come from the Globetrotter series - who do not have a guide for Barbados, which is what I was looking for. Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. It is not a bad guide by any means, but if Globetrotter do get around to publishing on the area, it is almost certain to be a better bet.
winston reed.......2002-03-07
July 2001 I dove several of the sites reviewed by ms Ryan and Mr Savage
and found their profiles of the dives to be very accurate and
helpful.I hope she and Brian Savage will do a "complete
DG of the Bahamas,I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Needs more vacation details.......2001-03-07
I found this guide pleasant to look through, but not half as helpful as Best Dives of the Caribbean by Hunter Publishing, which gives a lot more detail on the dive sites, places for kids to snorkel, hotels and everything I need to plan a vacation.
This is the book the Experts Use........2001-03-01
It is always interesting to see which books are used by the local Dive Guides at the sharp end and this is how I was first introduced to this particular book just over three years ago in Grenada. Since then I have put it to good use on a number of assignments in the Caribbean and I have yet to find it lacking in any way.
The opening introductory chapter is well written and includes plenty of general information on diving, facilities, climate, sea, regulations, boats, cruise liners, resorts, hotels, flora, fauna, shipwrecks, photography and safety. The book then commences with Dominica in the north and moves southwards to include Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Tobago and Barbados before concluding with a Glossary, Bibliography and Accident and Emergency Information.
The relatively few photographs are all of a good quality - but this is book that concentrates on providing all the relevant and peripheral information that any Scuba Diver will want to know before and during a trip to any of the Caribbean Islands covered. The maps and diagrams are particularly useful - and very easy to follow in situ.
On first sight, however, the book cover lacks impact and might easily be overlooked as the prospective purchaser gets side-tracked by something a little more flashy. Do not be tempted away from this one - it is a straight forward, no nonsense guide containing everything you will want to know.
Altogether, almost 400 pages packed with information - although that does include a small number of one-page advertisements.
In summary, any book claiming to be "A Complete Guide" has to include an awful lot of information. This one has achieved just that and will not disappoint the purchaser.
NM
Completely the BEST Dive Guide!.......2000-07-27
We dive regularly in these areas covered by the Complete Dive Guide Vol 1, a place where information is scarce except for that offered by local operators. We found this guide, especially the Dive Maps and the information on the local Dive shops and their services to be the ABSOLUTE Best available. We recommend everyone who dives these areas grab a copy and keep it close. This guide has given us the ability to dive confidently and know we aren't going to miss anything the area has to offer.
Thanks Brian & Colleen

Fantastic Guide-The Real Deal.......2007-06-13
Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. The black and white pages made it all the more authentic as not being overly commercialized. In each port he gave highly reliable waypoints which I fed into my Garmin GPS, and everything worked like clockwork. His depth soundings in the anchorages were highly reliable as well. Our crew of 6 sailors, all passionate for adventure in the Windward Islands, raved about this book. Other books were aboard, but this one quickly became the one that we relied upon. It was concise and to the point, and we really enjoyed using it. Accolades to Mr. Pavlidis. This is a winner!!
Pretty Good.......2007-01-09
Lots of great info. Unfortunately in Black and White. Good complement to the "Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands".

Not a Cruising Guide.......2002-11-26
While this book is beautiful and informative, one should not expect a current cruising guide to these islands. The photography is excellent and the accompanying text provides valuable, if slightly dated, insights to the island culture.

Book Description
St. Vincent and the Grenadines have so much to offer the visitor. St. Vincent itself has breathtaking volcanic mountains, fertile valleys famous for their fruit and vegetables, archaeological sites, ancient fishing villages, and much more.
The harbors and anchorages of the Grenadines are meeting places for sailors and yachts from all over the world. Special emphasis has been given to providing the right sort of information needed on sailing vacations throughout the area.
Appreciation of all these attractions is enhanced by the author's brief historical detail.
Customer Reviews:
A guide it isn't!.......2007-03-17
Full of great pictures, but at best, it is only an introduction to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. If you are looking for a serious cruising guide, as I was, don't get this. It is a very good introduction though.
The real scoop for the tourist visiting St. Vincent.......2004-08-05
This is a good over view book that expands, but does not replace an excellent travel annual published by the St. Vincent travel bureau. The author is explicit about specific companies and people who can render service, such as diving. She also updates situations that may have changed since recorded in an older travel book. She clearly loves the islands and this comes through. Not expensive, and well worth adding. Books about St. Vincent are few enough.

This highly detailed guide includes some smaller islands barely mentioned in competing books. Covers Mustique, Bequia, Palm Island, Tobago Cays, Carriacou, Mayreau, Petit St. Vincent, St. Vincent and Grenada, at the southern end of the Caribbean arc, just below St. Lucia. St. Vincent has the oldest botanical gardens in the Americas; on Bequia, some islanders still harpoon whales as their ancestors did; Grenada has pristine reefs and abundant natural beauty; and tiny Mustique, home to countless celebrities, has verdant mountains. Full details on sightseeing, island history, watersports, nightlife and more. Maps. Index.
Customer Reviews:
Best Guidebook.......2004-08-30
Grenada, St Vincent & the Grenadines Adventure Guide has been selected by the Caribbean Tourism Organization as "Best Guidebook to the Caribbean in 2004."
Pretty good guide book.......2004-03-15
My wife and I took this book with us on a recent "Yankee Clipper" cruise from Windjammer. The book was quite useful with good descriptions (usually a paragraph or two) of the accomodations and restaurants on the islands we visited (Grenada, Mayreau, Bequia, Carricou, Tobago Cays). The authors were very up front about the experiences they DIDN'T like which helped us to avoid frustration. The book also had a nicely organized table of contents which helped navigate the book quickly.
Three small strikes against the book... First is the prices given were in ranges. Thus a hotel has its rating of 1 to 4 dollar signs. However, you don't know if the hotel you're staying at with the $$ sign is on the low end ($110-$115) or on the high end ($190-$195). Some people may not mind this, but I found Lonely Planet's "Eastern Caribbean" to be a bit more specific on what kinds of prices you can expect.
Second, most of the maps were for the whole island, with the only city specific maps being Kingstown, SVG and St. George's Grenada. The Lonely Planet book had several "city-scale" maps which proved to be helpful.
Finally, the book is rather large physically, about one inch thick and almost 6" by 9". This made it somewhat of a hinderence to carry around; we just left it in our cabin and read it on the way to our next island.
However, don't let my negative comments discourage you. This is an excellent guidebook for the area and is highly recommended.
Remarkable and worthwhile guide.......2003-11-15
This guide is immediate and thorough; it give a host of places and activities that could fulfill even the most bored tourist's desires. The book is salted with the kind of personal experience that makes visiting these islands so special. They take us away from palm beaches, island vistas and rugged emerald mountains and put us in touch with the people who inhabit these beautiful places. From fishermen in Barrouallie to Rastas in the Port Elizabeth market and a botanist in St. George's, we get a sense of the lives that entwine to make up the fabric of these islands. Also, each section begins with a history of the place at hand, so important to understanding the southern Windwards. The authors have produced a journeyman labor, a product of discernment and enterprise tempered with warmth and humor. Those of us who have seen the southern Windwards as a special place for so long have reason to be thankful and relieved.

Book Description
Thunder Over the Ochoco is literally the work of a lifetime. Its author spent 40 years combing historical records and interviewing dozens of descendants of pioneer settlers and Native Americans who shared oral traditions that have been passed down through generations.
What emerges is history as it has never been told before. A history of conquistadors and fur trappers, of merchants and missionaries. The history of an Indian war that was one of the longest and bloodiest conflicts ever fought on American soil, but which for political and economic reasons was covered up for decades. Above all, the history of those first settlers of the Ochocomen, woman, and childrenwho were left to wander and starve in a land they thought belonged to them through eternity, a people who in their final agony cried out: `Nimma ne-umpu!'`We too are human!'
Gale Ontko tells this story with compassion and grace, in a style that combines the precision of the scholar with the vigor and drama of the novelist. The five volumes comprise nearly 2500 printed book pages and have been described by some as the most factual writing by any author on the history of the Shoshoni People.
Volume I of Gale Ontko's epic five volume series covers hundreds of years from pre-Columbian times to the collapse of the world fur trade in 1840. Volume I meets the Shoshoni Indians before the arrival of the Europeans and tracks their rise from peaceful eastern Oregon agriculturists to the aggressive Snake war tribes, rulers of the Pacific Northwest. By 1812, they had clashed with every major world power in their jealous guardianship of a land they called Oyerungun. Their undisputed hunting grounds beyond the setting sun would soon become coveted by white foreigners searching first for precious metals and later for valuable fur-bearing animals. The gathering storms of hatred would hover ominously on the distant horizons. Volume I chronicles the events which inevitably would lead to war.

Book Description
Pioneer temperaments, Jacqueline Williams shows, were greatly influenced by that which was stewable, bakable, broilable, and boilable. Using travelers' diaries, letters, newspaper advertisements, and nineteenth-century cookbooks, Williams re-creates the highs and lows of cooking and eating on the Oregon Trail. She investigates the mundane--biscuits and bacon, mush and coffee--as well as the unexpected--carbonated soda made from bubbling spring water; ice cream created from milk, snow, and peppermint; fresh fruits and vegetables.
Understanding what and how the pioneers ate, Williams demonstrates, is essential to understanding how they lived and survived--and sometimes died--on the trail.

Customer Reviews:
leaves much to be desired.......2006-04-27
I expected more than just a collection of art works in abstract style--it's left to the viewer to figure out the inspiration, how it was done, etc. You get the title of the work--a clue--and sometimes what media was used--there is not much print in the book except for the titles and sometimes media. I've seen abstract art before and can guess at some of the inspirations--I didn't need the collection of abstract artworks that are in the book. It would have been nice to have explanations of media, method or some guidance other than just look at the pictures, because that is all there is.
