In 1877, a humble boat landing was constucted on Conneaut Lake, PennsylvaniaÂ's largest natural lake. Colonel Frank Mantor, a visionary, discovered and purchased the property and convinced investors from the Pittsburgh, Shenango, and Lake Erie Railroad to extend the railroad line to a newly built resort on the site. In 1892, Exposition ParkÂ—a permanent fair exhibiting machinery and livestockÂ—was founded. Amusement rides were

added alongside hotels, cottages, restaurants, and other businesses. The resort grew into an amusement park and was renamed Conneaut Lake Park in 1920. Conneaut Lake Park illustrates the evolution of this lakeside resort with images of long-gone attractions such as the Hotel Elmwood,

Temple of Music, Jungle Cruise, Fairyland Forest, and Wild Mouse.

I really enjoyed this book because it brings back a lot of happy memories from my childhood. Looking at the pictures from the early 1970's really brought a smile to my face. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed and appreciated Conneaut Lake Park.

Very informative book on the history of many amusement parks in the state of Pennsylvania. Many brought back memories; from all the historic photos. Alot of informative websites and locations are included with lots of information.

Not just for PA residents.......2002-10-26

As most roller coaster enthusiasts know, there are very few books that go beyond pretty full-color photographs and into the history of a particular park. It is even more difficult to find information on parks not owned by major corporations (e.g. Disney, Paramount, Vivendi Universal).

Futrell's book captures the unique history of 13 different amusement parks in Pennsylvania. You are given a rare glimpse into these parks that date back to the origins of the American amusement park industry. Having recently visited Kennywood and Idlewild for the first time, I have realized how much of the charm and atmosphere has faded from the latest generation of parks.

Buy this book before the print run ends! You won't regret it.

Fun reading and focus on PA!.......2002-08-31

Great new book on amusement parks of PA. This book show the interest in amusement parks and rides that has been growing ever since the 90's. There is a nice balance between the history of the parks and current conditions. In one book the reader learns a wealth of material about past and now defunct parks (where is the mention of the park that used to be in Mt. Gretna - carousel and all??) as well as information on parks that are up and running. Good summary of each park as well as current information on admission, directions, etc. I was disappointed that there was little emphasis on memorabilia or good trivia. The old photos/postcards really help. That would really help this work out. What about all those great tokens. Even Leap the Dips put our a coaster token to push the coaster. The book is a good read and recommended for the enthusiast.

This book rocks. There was more information than I could possibly imagine. The author is obviously impassioned by his subject--this had to have been a labor of love. And what better muse than the romantic coasters of Pennsylvania.

This was a very interesting book, especially for one that went to Kennywood while growing up - school picnincs, family visits, band trips for Fall Fantasy parades, dates, etc. to see the history of Kennywood.

I would recommend this book to anybody that grew up in the 'burgh & went to Kennywood.

The book was all i expected to be.. as a young boy i spent alot of time at kennywood-i grew up in the 1950's when kennywood was in it's prime.. its a excellent park for kid's and adult's and old kennywood is still there in alot of memories,like the old swimming pool and the bigname band dance hall all have since been torn down....

I absolutely loved these books. Gary Jennings was genius in his research, literary skills and story telling. What a brilliant way to bring the past to life and tell the story from the true Mexicans' perspective. I teach Spanish, but feel like I have so much more of an understanding of the Mexican culture and how it has been influenced by Old Spain. I came to love the characters in both books and wish that he could have written more. I appreciate his extensive research into the culture and Nahuatl language. They are both great reads!!

It's an excellent book, I didn't want it finishes, was great, it rises my proud of being mexican, Aztecs lose because of they were weaks? or because of the Corte's weapons? not, they lost because their own people betrayed them, and they lost for a little bit.

Astonishing.......1998-02-24

This book took my breath away. I actually felt anguish when I realized there were only 10 pages left until the end. I didn't want it to end. I have never read a book more than once. I started it again a couple of days back and this time I'm taking my time and I will savor every page.

Makes the 16th century come alive........1996-08-11

Aztec is a colorful, amazingly realistic account of the life of an elderly (60ish) man before, during, and after the arrival of the Spanish conquerers. I enjoyed very much the author's treatment of the chapters as a series of letters to the Spanish king, each one preceded by a cover leter from the priest explaining how the information was obtained and apologizing for the shocking content.
