The publisher has the bad habit of hiding the names of authors of their compact guides, let me rectify this:
The guide was written by Nicholas Cobb, the splendid color photography was provided by Tim McKenna.
On mere small 121 pages, Cobb's book provides the essential information about the (tragic) history of Tahiti and about the contemporary marvels of its nature, attractions and the hospitality.
McKenna's photography is magnificent and its value cannot be underestimated: Compared to the black and white photography in books from Lonely Planet and Moon Handbooks, with their sometimes abysmal print quality, this travel guide really shines. In its photographic valors and in the quality of print Insight Guides match the best of the breed, including the Eye-Witness DK guides. The charts and maps of the islands are also in color. Without clutter, they really depict well only the important details of interest for a short time visitor.
Of course, 121 pages cannot contain all the information which you might find in David Stanley Tahiti Moon Handbook, thus I would suggest to take Stanley as the primary source of information. However, considering the moderate price, this guide is a most welcome extension and a "must have!" It is current, 2005 edition, compared to 2003 editions of others. Foremost, currently this is probably the only guide about Tahiti written after Marlon Brando passed away. Somehow I do not like to read about a dead person in 'present tense'...
My only regret is that Insight does not provide a larger version of this guide! Maybe they will, I will grab it as well!

The best all-around book I have found........2003-01-07
I researched Australia for over a year prior to my April 2002 visit there, and I read as many guides and books as I could find. While in Australia I purchased a local behemoth encycledia of the country, thinking that was as good as it gets.
I found the Insight Guide at my local library after I returned, and I am convinced this is THE single book anyone with more than a passing interest in Australia should buy.
The very heavy paper presents the beautiful color pictures in high resolution, and the articles are written in a complete yet entertaining style. Australian artwork highlights the history section. The sites of interest descriptions are entertaining and concise. I actually did not read the last section (travel tips)in depth since I had already returned from my vacation, but even without that section the book would be a great read.
This is NOT the book to carry with you on your vacation - there are plenty of other lighter guides that have more useful trivia like hotels and restaurants. This is the book to read and enjoy before you leave home. It is an excellent overall introduction to the country.
My daughter is beginning to study Australia in her 2nd grade class - I have ordered a copy to let her take to school.
I highly recommend this book. At the very least, check it out of your library to look at the pictures.

great information on new zealand cities and points of interest,historical & commercial. excellent itineraries with photography to give you a true sense of the trip, including physical requirements. recommend it highly for a first-time visitor!
Colorful, informative travel tips but lack of maps/direction.......2004-01-21
This is a colorful book with lots of pictures about New Zealand. Its first couple of chapters include the history and culture of New Zealand are especially interesting. They were very useful for visitors to the Kiwi country. However, its lack of large street maps, area maps and detail route maps are disappointing as well as annoying. Although the front cover has an overview map of both the north & south island, I think it will improve the ease of reading and research if various level of district maps and street maps are provided, especially when a traveller was deciding which hotel/motel to book reservations and how far he/she needs to drive from one scenic spot to the next. Without this, it is disasterous for travel planning. Other things to include will be web sites for driving directions such as www.wises.co.nz etc. For a backpack traveller like me, I will even be willing to pay more if road maps/ street map of Auckland are included with the book (which some of the publishers are already doing).

I purchased this book on Queensland to give me a better guide for Cairns and the Barrier reef. It suggested a few good restaurants and a shopping area, but besides that it was miserable. While there are excellent areas close by to see the rainforest and dive, they were barely mentioned. A longer volume on Australia was more useful.

Has good high level maps/pictures, but little by way of reccomendations.......2007-02-19
As we are planning a trip to Bali, this book does not provide you with a concise way to figure out what items are a "must-see" in Bali. It does have nice high level maps of each area of Bali (and Lombok - if you are interested) and colorful pictures, and breaks it up by region, but in no way helps you figure out what part of Bali to see, what to see in any part (and what isn't worth it) and where to stay. It is more a data repository of info rather than a perspective about what is good/bad. So if you want a list of everything with info about it, and not reccomendations, this book is good. If you haven't been there and need reccomendations, then this is not the book for you.
Okay guide.......2006-07-23
I am glad to see Insight guides doing lots of guidebooks again. I used them a lot 15 years ago and appreciated their sophistication and depth. I am just back from Bali and took this new guidebook and a couple of others. Sadly it was just okay. The Lonely Planet guide was better in every respect, especially with regard to its restaurant recommendations. You feel like the Insight guy ate free a lot. But I do appreciate the photography in this book and a lot of its cultural coverage.

Best guide for Melbourne.......2005-04-24
I purchased several Melbourne tour guides. Including Lonely Planet, Fodor's guide. Insight Guide Melbourne is the best of them. It is full of pictures, good categorized information. Of course other books have advantages too, but the best is definitely the Insight Guide.

How to Make an Island Paradise Seem Boring.......2002-07-07
Lutz writes an eighty page encyclopedia entry, giving you everything you ever wanted to know about this Pacific island, while proving he did not step foot on the island. The photographs seem to be from the 1960's, despite the 1987 book copyright date. The Guamanians are portrayed as backward and overly reliable on the government to cure its ills. Although this site lists this as a kids book, your child will be bored silly.

Book Description
This volume completes Part II of Series A of the Paper Museum. Together with the first volume, it reflects an unusual aspect of Cassiano's interests, but a particularly relevant one for modern scholars: the material remains of post-classical culture in Rome and the psychical inheritance from the earliest centuries of Christianity. Catalogued here is a diverse and fascinating range of antiquities: reliefs, inscriptions, sarcophagi, sculpture, manuscript illuminations, gold-glass, gems, ivories, lamps, metalwork and 'instruments of martyrdom'. The drawings were mainly collected by Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo, Cassiano's brother, in the later seventeenth century and include some of the finest examples of archaeological draughtsmanship of the period.
