Customer Reviews:
This book could be better organised. .......2007-06-16
This book could do with better organisation. Same topics should be grouped together instead of mentioning them at different chapters. I also expected to see more information and suggestions on where to go. "The Gap Year Book, 2Ed" also published by Lonely Planet is a much better written book. You may be wiser to wait for the second edition.
A Source Of Useful Information But Not As Good As I Was Hoping For.......2006-03-05
As someone considering a career break, I was very pleased to discover this book put out by Lonely Planet - my favorite publisher of travel guides.
On the plus side, this book does contain plenty of helpful information related to travelling overseas or living as an expat. I found the large number of internet sites listed to be an especially useful. The books also walks you through the minute details about how to leave your job, organize your finances and otherwise prepare to travel or live abroad. Alot of this was just common sense. But I'm sure many people will find it comforting and helpful to have a "step by step guide" for pre-travel preparations.
It's true this book was written by British writers and intended primarily for a British readership, hence the use of British slang and social commentary. But there is also plenty of information specifically for Americans and the book is definitely usable by any English speaking person of whatever nationality.
On the down side, I was hoping for more practical travel suggestions and information on individual countries and the travel costs within those countries. But there really is very little of that besides mentioning some of the most popular travel routes , such as Bangkok to Bali or Istanbul to Cairo. Currently, I am planning a trip to study Spanish in Latin America. This is one of the most popular activites for those going overseas. But the book had much less information on this than I expected, only listing a few web sites. Instead there was considerably more information related to extreme pursuits, such as climbing Mount Everest or walking to the South Pole, that were really not my interest.
Still I would consider this book worth its purchase price due to the useful information and web sites that it does offer. But it was a bit of disappointment compared to my high expectations. Hopefully future editions will show significant improvement.
Really Good...But...........2006-01-31
Yes this book has some really good info on the subject, but, its written for citizens of the UK or Australia! All numbers and references are for pounds and British agencys and such. Any ideas of a similar book focusing on US travelers? I can not really use this book, as such it is up for sale.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for any Columbus scholar.......2000-11-03
This is the largest fragment of Columbus's first voyage log, as abstracted by Bartolome de Las Casas. Of the many editions in print, Dunn & Kelley stands head and shoulders above the rest. The format has a new Spanish transcription on the left-hand pages, exactly as hand-written in the original manuscript by Las Casas: same abbreviations, strike-outs, diacriticals, and marginal notes. The right-hand pages contain an English translation.
But perhaps the most valuable addition for the scholar is the Spanish concordance of the entire text, giving folio and line numbers for every appearance of almost every word. (Common words such as prepositions are given only with word counts, not references.) All in all, a must-have for any serious scholar or afficianado of the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Good secondary-level textbook........1996-12-12
This reprint of the 1938 illustrated edition of Columbus' journal covers the crossing of the Atlantic from August 3 to October 14, 1492. The (uncredited) translation is from Las Casas' abridgement of the journal in the HISTORIAS DE LAS INDIAS. The note at the beginning of the Dover edition explains the origin of the text. This book would be suitable for instruction with advanced middle school and high school students. It is unfortunate that the text is truncated upon arrival in Hispaniola since it omits many of the interesting passages concerning early contact with the islanders and Columbus' return voyage to Spain
Product Description
Five selections in Latin from Peter Martyr of Anglerias De Orbe Novo are presented with vocabulary help on the facing page. After each Latin selection, background notes including information from other primary sources (Columbus own 1493 letter, the abstraction of Columbus journal by Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, the biography of Columbus by his son Ferdinand, and Oviedos Natural History of the West Indies) are included along with the pertinent Latin selection from Peter Martyr. When Peter Martyr was writing in the fifteenth century, it was agreed upon by scholars and men of literature at the time that the proper Latin to use was that of Marcus Tullius Cicero. Hence Martyrs Latinity is quite classical and, in fact, the simplicity of his literary style resembles that of Julius Caesar.

Putting the voyages of Christopher Columbus in perspective.......2004-10-11
"Christopher Columbus and the First Voyages to the New World" makes the case that what Columbus did in 1492 was "the most momentous miscalculation in history." Stephen C. Dodge tells the story of the stubborn captain-general who led at iny fleet of three ships from the Spanish port of Palos that August. Columbus was convinced that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean he would reach the Indies and claim the riches coveted by all of Europe for Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain. They sponsored the expedition that after a voyage of a little more than a month discovered an island gateway to two new continents that had been forgotten by whatever Europeans had ventured that far in the past.
The meeting of Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas on the tiny island of San Salvador was arguably the most momentous in the history of civilization. Although Dodge only touches on the treachery, mayhem, slavery, and genocide that followed that first peaceful encounter, such things are much on the minds of students today who see Columbus as the father of all of the evils of the world represented by dead, white, male Europeans. The flip side of the coin is the entirely new civilization that Europeans built in the New World on the ruins of their old one.
The Columbus of Dodge's book is a man who made three voyages of discovery to the Americas, all of which were filled with high adventure and made possible by his uncanny seamanship. But he was also a man who died bitter and neglected, not to mention unaware that he had given Spain the foundation for a massive empire that would make it a world power. The book begins with the first voyage to the Americas and then goes back in time to tell how Columbus first tried to persuade the Portuguese to underwrite his enterprise to the Indies before getting the backing of the Spanish. Chapters are devoted to the rest of Columbus' voyages and then the attacks that targeted Columbus after disillusionment over the realities of the New World made him the devil incarnate to his opponents on Hispaniola. The last chapter on "The High Voyage" tells of how Columbus died hurt over the loss of his privileges and feeling he had been cheated by the Spanish crown. In the middle of the book you will find "Widening the Globe," a photo-essay in color of maps and paintings reflecting the world of Columbus. The rest of the book is illustrated with black & white paintings, etchings, woodcuts, maps, writings, and artifacts, most of which are fairly contemporary to the life of Columbus.
This volume will provide young students with an understanding of who Columbus was and what he did in the context of the era in which he lived. Although some of the information about Columbus is now in doubt (that recent special on cable television convinced me that Columbus was really Spanish, not because of those failed DNA tests but because most of what we have written in his own hand is in Spanish and none of it is in Italian), his voyages and what happened afterwards are the core of this book and remain solid. Other sources will certainly provide attacks on the consequences of what Columbus did, but understanding his accomplishments in the context of his time is a necessary foundation for all of the latter criticism as well as for any attempt to judge the man fairly.
The World Explorers series of 33 volumes is divided into four categories that recount the exploits of the scientists and sailors, missionaries and soldier, mountain men and astronauts, whose journeys of exploration advanced human knowledge. The first looks at explorers of the ancient world such as the Vikings explorers of the 9th-11th centuries along with Marco Polo and the medieval explorers. The other three parts cover the three great ages of exploration. The first is the era of Columbus and Magellan in the 15th-16th centuries when the New World was discovered and explored. The second is the age of science and imperialism made possible by the scientific advances of the 17th century where the world's last two undiscovered continents, Australia and Antarctica, were discovered and the entire world was mapped. The final age looks at the ambitious quests of the 20th century with the exploration of the depths of the ocean and the final frontier of space.

Book Description
Whether painted by artist-warriors depicting their feats in battle or by other Native American artists, 19th and 20th century ledger drawings--drawn on blank sheets of ledger books obtained from U.S. soldiers, traders, missionaries, and reservation employees--provide an excellent visual source of information on the Great Plains Native Americans. An art form representing a transition from drawing on buffalo hide to a paper medium, ledger drawings range in style, content, and quality from primitive and artistically poor to bold and sharp with lavish use of color. Although interest in ledger drawings has increased in the last 20 years, there has never been a guide to holdings of these drawings. By bringing together the diverse and scattered institutions that hold them, this book will make finding the drawings quicker and easier. Illustrated with examples of ledger drawings, the guide identifies the libraries, archives, historical societies, and museums that hold ledger drawings. The institutions listed range from those with large collections, such as the Smithsonian, Yale, and Oklahoma museums, to institutions with only a few drawings. The book also includes a bibliography of books and articles about Indian pictographic art. The index will enable researchers to locate art by individual artists and tribes.
