A nice coffee table book.......2005-01-21
This book, and it's companion Fly Fishing Patagonia:the South, is an excellent coffee table books for gringos heading south or who've gone south. If you want a meaty flyfishing guide head elsewhere. 5 stars for a coffee table book, 2 for a guidebook.
Awesome!.......2003-03-22
I recently returned from Argentina where I purchased this book before it was available here in the US. I own dozens of fly fishing books but there is none that compares to the outstanding photography in this book. It is a book every fly fisherman should own, whether or not they have ever fished Argentina. The book covers every important river in the Lake District and the bilingual text makes for excellent reading. I am purchasing copies for friends.

The richly illustrated At Home with Beatrix Potter will delight the many admirers of the artist and writer of children's books. Her beloved characters--Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and their whimsical friends--were inspired by the English countryside, which she grew to love during summer vacations as a girl. In 1905, at the age of 40, Potter bought Hill Top Farm overlooking Esthwaite Water in the Lake District, a region of hills and lakes famous for its glorious landscapes. She continued to buy property in the area with her royalties, and by the time she died 37 years later, she had amassed over 4,000 acres. She fought vigorously to preserve the beauty of the Lake District and its rural ways, leaving her estate to the National Trust, Britain's leading conservation agency. This book, written by an official of the Trust, is a tribute to the jewel of the estate, 17th-century Hill Top Farm. Potter restored and furnished it as a showcase of English country ways, though she actually lived in a large cottage nearby. Her substantial collection of Lake District antiques reflected the influential Arts & Crafts movement, which emphasized the integrity of handmade objects in a period of increasing mechanization. The book takes us on a tour of the farm, alternating the artist's original photographs and watercolors with photographs of the building and countryside as they look today. Several two-page spreads of the garden in early summer and the Lake District in late autumn are especially beautiful. Unpretentious, solid, charming, understated: At Home with Beatrix Potter embodies the rustic virtues that Beatrix loved. --John Stevenson
Book Description
The creator of Peter Rabbit, Samuel Whiskers, and Jemima Puddle-Duck, Beatrix Potter (1866-1942) is one of the best-loved children's book authors of all time. Yet few in America are aware of the role she played in protecting some of England's most beautiful landscapes and in designing romantic interiors and a lovely garden at Hill Top, her beloved Lake District farmhouse.
Taking the reader through her picturesque house and the breathtaking scenery around it that inspired many of her famous stories, this charming book is the first to look at the intimate connection between the English countryside and Potter's work. Her own exquisite sketches and watercolors, as well as personal ephemera, appear alongside specially commissioned full-color photographs, revealing a home filled with treasured old furniture and beautiful objects and celebrating an artist-storyteller whose legacy as a conservationist at last receives the attention it deserves.

A place I'd like to visit.......2007-08-24
What a beautiful book. Clear, inviting photos, and interesting information. A book you will enjoy reading and sharing.
Ten stars.......2003-01-05
Being the big fan of Beatrox Potter, the woman and not just the author I was overjoyed to get this as a gift recently and the book is a treat for the eyes. While it has pages and pages of stunning photographs as well as her own water colours, it is the text and complete history of her farms that is awesome.
That and reading and seeing photographs of her as well as her farms and reading why she bought each property and the breeds of sheep she raised was of special interest to me. I loved seeing the inside of her farms, although I had seen the inside of a few, via the National Land Trust to whom she left her properties.
I loved the photographs of Beatrix and how she was so eccentric, kind yet firm and a woman ahead of her time. And it was nice to read that she was a true homestead style woman who had the waste not want not mentality, as well as a deep appreciation for quality and hated to see old bridges torn down for modern ones, although she was quick to make sure the stones and plants, wood and other things being discarded by some, didn't end up in some dump area but were recycled into new walls and buildings and plantings on her property.
This is a book a cottage gardener, keeper of sheep. painters, stone masons and anyone who loves working with their hands will love. As well as sincere environmentalists and organic gardeners and farmers.
A DELIGHT FOR THOSE WHO LOVE BEATRIX POTTER'S BOOKS.......2000-04-07
AT HOME WITH BEATRIX POTTER is a delight to the eye and the spirit for those who love this children's author and her "little books." It is written by Susan Denyer of Britain's National Trust. (Potter's property was left to the National Trust.) The focus of the book is Hilltop Farm, the first farm Beatrix Potter acquired. Although she lived across the road in Castle Cottage, Potter often used Hilltop for its library, guestroom, and workplaces. She also used it to display her "treasures." This book reveals her love of nature, the English Lake District, and of old things--carved dressers, chests, spinning wheels are a few of the "gems" portrayed. Two-page color spreads convey the beauty of the Lake Area, where Potter became a major landowner, sheepfarmer, and a happily married woman. It is wonderful to see the original places, buildings, and objects that she incorporated into her books (examples are shown side by side). The book's layout, photographs, and design are first-rate. Reading this book reminded me of THE PRIVATE WORLD OF TASHA TUDOR and its wonderful photographs by Richard Brown. Like Tudor, Potter drew what she knew and preferred country to city life. (Tudor also was a working farmer in New Hampshire.) Finally, this book presents information about Beatrix Potter and the things and people she loved in an informative and respectful way. This book is not a biography, and Denyer avoids the biographer's temptation to "sum up" or "explain" Beatrix Potter. Rather, we draw our own conclusions after being exposed to the things Potter loved. The select bibliography at the book's end provides a list of works on and by Potter (her journals and letters have been published) that is very helpful to those who want to know more about this author. This is a book to treasure.
Blend of Biography, Original Sketches and Scenic Photography.......2000-04-04
This book is a balanced combination of biographical information, Beatrix Potter's sketches and paintings, and exceptional scenic photography of the Lake District she helped preserve. It also details the exterior and interior of a house she owned which provided the backgrounds for many of her book illustrations. The side-by-side comparisons were interesting, even though the house seemed to be more of a showpiece than her actual residence. (Thus, the book title is somewhat misleading.) I found this book to be of exceptional quality and, although the text was sometimes overwrought with property, town and house names, the book includes many captioned photos and a map that allow the reader to appreciate the area in which she lived.

Excellent biography, Wonderful photographs and illustrations.......2007-05-23
This is my favorite biography of Beatrix Potter, thoroughly researched and historically accurate, with many wonderful family, home and countrylife photographs (including ones of Beatrix Potter's pet rabbit, dog, and a variety of her other animal pets). The book also contains her many beautiful illustrations, watercolors and copies of some notes and letters as well as portions of her manuscripts. Judy Taylor, an author enchanted with Beatrix Potter stories and art from early childhood, also wrote Beatrix Potter: The Artist and Her World, and two National Trust Guides: Beatrix Potter and Hilltop, and Beatrix Potter and Hawkshead. She's the editor of both Beatrix Potter's Letters: A Selection and Letters To Children from Beatrix Potter.

Book Description
After 10 years, Guy--a drifter with a taste for deception--has returned to Coniston in England's Lake District. A local journalist, Tony di Venuto, is campaigning to revive interest in the disappearance of Emma Bestwick, and Guy knows what happened to her.
When he tips off the newspaperman that Emma will not be coming home, DCI Hannah Scarlett, head of Cumbria's Cold Case Review Team, re-opens the old investigation. Her enquiries take her to the Museum of Myth and Legend and to the remote and eerie Arsenic Labyrinth--a series of stone tunnels used to remove arsenic from tin ore.
Meanwhile, historian Daniel Kind is immersing himself in the work of John Ruskin, whose neighbors created the Arsenic Labyrinth. A shocking discovery makes it clear to Hannah that there is not one mystery to solve, but two, and she turns to Daniel for help in untangling the secrets of the past. As Hannah and Daniel struggle to resist a growing but dangerous attraction, Guy's plan to make a quick buck runs into trouble, and he has to resort to desperate measures. Someone is determined to kill to keep their secrets safe.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District in winter, the novel depicts how passionate relationships can lead to obsession and murder.

A fine balance of mystery and deduction.......2007-01-16
Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (01/07)
Martin Edwards in "The Arsenic Labyrinth" has integrated a unique cast of characters with an intriguing plot. The story is centered on unraveling intricate relationships and secrets from the past. A drifter, a journalist, a historian, and a police inspector, all play significant roles in uncovering this unsolved mystery from the cold case file. The setting for the story is Coniston, a small community in England's Lake District.
Edwards has created a group of characters with distinctive personalities, many of whom were in his earlier Lake District Novels. The carefully developed plot is moved along through the medium of dialog. Edwards's use of astute interrogations and his elaborate detail of police investigation procedures match the classic writers of this genre.
Ten years after the disappearance of Emma Bestwick, a newspaper article and an anonymous phone call stir up interest in the unsolved case. The police reopen the cold case file and begin revisiting family members, relatives, and those even remotely involved at the time of Emma's disappearance. The inquiry takes DCI Hannah Scarlett and her team to the Museum of Myth and Legend and to the ominous Arsenic Labyrinth, a succession of stone tunnels previously used in removing arsenic from tin ore.
There are numerous unexpected and complex plot twists. A second body, buried in the mine for 50 years, is discovered near Emma's corpse. New clues and multiple speculations turn up during the new investigation. Suddenly the reader is faced with another unexpected turn of events that leads to a suspenseful surprise ending.
The plot is well implemented and the narration is outstanding. I found "The Arsenic Labyrinth" an enjoyable read and am eager to read more of the works of Martin Edwards.

Book Description
After three years of traipsing across Europe with her lovesick, widowed mother, Nell Bray has finally found her way to Oxford University. There she has befriended the beautiful Imogen and the charming Midge.
When the three girls decide to accept an invitation by their male classmates to join a reading party in the country during vacation - accompanied by a dashing philosophy don with a reputation for stirring up trouble - they go against what is quickly becoming the obsolete conventions of the nineteenth-century.
Once they arrive in the country, they are greeted by the unpleasant fact that their host has been accused of murder when a local boy is missing. Rather than return home, however, the six students and their mentor decide to put down their books and put their intellectual prowess to the test by solving the mystery.
This combination of mystery and learning - with some college crushes and loves along the way - makes Dead Man Riding Gillian Linscott's best mystery to date.
Customer Reviews:
A strong sense of locale with an ordinary plot.......2004-03-04
Nell Bray, an Oxford student in 1900 has decided to spend a summer holiday with her friends at a classmate's uncle's house in the Lake District. Unfortunately, they discover that the uncle may have inadvertently murdered someone and he is being harassed. When a horse rides onto the farm through an early morning mist with a dead body on it's back, things turn especially ugly.
Gillian Linscott succeeds in bringing the Lake District of a century ago very much alive. The well drawn characters make full use of the landscape as Nell tries to get to the bottom of the murders. However, the story lacks true interest or progression. In a sense, it resonates with the heritage of the countryhouse mystery but without the sense of fun. Overall, a very ordinary effort.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE COUNTRY HOUSE MYSTERY.......2003-04-14
#1's plot summary is generally correct, although she is confused about the time and manner of Nell's discovery of the corpse. I do not agree, however, with her conclusion that Gillian Linscott "writes outside the sub-genre box". I think DEAD MAN RIDING gives the classic English country house mystery an interesting twist while hewing faithfully to its conventions.
Linscott has placed her story in an earlier era -- the last year of Queen Victoria's reign. It begins at a student production of Love's Labour's Lost, a clue to what will happen when an idealistic group of Oxford students set off to spend their summer break studying Plato in rural Cumberland. Not the kind of motivation that usually draws characters in a murder mystery to an English country estate. The country estate is very different too. A rundown house with no spare bedrooms for the guests, with outdoor plumbing, and scant meals of rabbit stew and oatcake.
Linscott showers the reader with clues and suspects galore, in the classic mystery tradition, while obscuring their true import until the very end. Her evocation of Cumberland circa 1901 is brillant and the mind-set of her late-Victorian characters is entirely believable.
I take this to be a prequel to Nell Bray's later adventures as a sleuth. If so, it is a very attractive beginning.
strong historical mystery.......2003-01-18
At the turn of the twentieth century, Nell Bray attends Somerville College at Oxford University with her best friends Imogen and Midge. The three female pals are also close to Alan, Nathan and Kit. So when Alan invites them to his uncle's home near Skiddow during the summer break, they gratefully accept. Also, going on the trip is Oxford Don Michael Meredith, a brilliant scholar who wants to take part in the group's planned philosophy discussions.
The villagers openly detest Alan's uncle with some believing he is a murderer because he shot at a mob on his property and one of the participants Arthur Mowbry turned up missing. One night when Nell takes a walk, she stumbles upon Alan's uncle's body, which is tied to his horse. Nell desperately wants to believe it was suicide or that someone she doesn't know killed him but she cannot close her mind to the possibility that one of the people she calls a friend is a murderer.
DEAD MAN RIDING is more than just a mystery; it is a story about the friendship and the lives that bind people together. At the same time the background is at a point in history when women realize that they are the equals of men and deserve the same rights. The heroine is the most intellectual of the group because she is determined to obtain answers despite the fact that she might not like them. Gillian Linscott is a talented storyteller who writes outside the sub-genre box.

Great Drawings of All time.......1998-03-21
This book(s) was first published by Shorewood in the 60's. Then by Kodansha in the 70's and now by Farrar Strauss & Giroux. I have the kodansha edition. It is in 4 slip cased volumes, gorgeously presented. The set includes about 1100 full colour reproductions with details on the opposite page. The paper is not gloss and the images are printed as close to full size as possible so they are probably represenative of the real thing. I hope to keep my copies till I die.
