Few cities can approach the quality and number of Paris's distinguished buildings and streetscapes. But if you go there to find those treasures, you'll miss most of them if you lack a good guidebook. Michel Poisson is a Parisian architect who spent the last several years sketching the city's buildings and urban spaces, locating them on maps of his own devising, and providing the requisite data and commentary.

His book is organized by arrondissements, the city's traditionally defined districts, and each entry includes a short building description or comment, a freehand drawing, an address, date, and the names of the closest metro station, the architect, and the patron. The last is a nice touch usually lacking in architectural guides. Nor is that the only unusual element of this book, which is as singular as a Citroën deux chevaux. It is larger and heavier than a normal guidebook--6.5 inches by 9.5 inches, 464 pages, and about 3 pounds--which may limit its portability on the field. The hand-drawn maps are a bit funky, and the illustrations vary from rich and full of character when showing older buildings to simplistic and inexpressive in the case of some newer projects.

Still, it's an amazing effort for one person: 200 maps, 535 entries, 650 drawings, and all the research and prose that goes with them. Poisson is a savvy urban explorer, and he steers readers not only to obvious sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, and Notre-Dame but also to scores of old and new places that you might never find on your own. And while it's easy to get disoriented in this complex city, you won't lose your place in the book--it thoughtfully features a bound-in red ribbon bookmark. --John Pastier

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the Architectural Enthusiast.......2005-04-17

Arranged by arrondissement, each chapeter begins with bird's eye view perspective drawings that make walking tours a facile visual delight. Full of exquisite treasures that one cannot find in other architectrural guides. One example: the old Bibliotheque National with its splendid reading room. Historical background with each entry. Worth the price for just the ink drawings. Would be spoiled by mere photographs. Superb in every way. Pair with Anthony Sutcliffe's "Paris, An Architectural History" and understand Paris better than the experts. Valuable even if Paris is not in your itinerary.

4 out of 5 stars splendidly comprehensive, but thin on detail.......2001-07-23

This is, I believe, the most comprehensive one-volume catalogue of the notable buildings and quartiers of Paris. Some customer reviews criticise its lack of photos, but Poisson's elegant line drawings highlight the architectual character of his buildings and give the book a pleasantly personal touch. There are plenty of alternative books with photos. The Amazon.com review points out one disadvantage of the book. It is rather bulky in size and in weight--mainly as a result of its good-quality paper and its large quantities of white space. These features make it very pleasant to peruse, but not very practical as a guide book. It is best used as a review of one's past on-the-spot experiences or as a planner for future ones. The other weakness is that the text is very scanty. Most buildings are treated in only a sentence or two. The comments are always judicious, but one would like more.

5 out of 5 stars A superb achievment. Wonderful illustrations and maps.......2001-02-24

Paris Buildings and Monuments is the superb achievement of Michel Poisson, a Paris architect. He made more than 850 drawings showing more than 500 well-chosen buildings. These drawings show everything that you need to know to decide whether to visit one of these buildings. Many of the drawings are front elevations. Some are floor plans. Others are three-quarter views. Still others are bird's-eye views.

Thanks to his carefully thought out design, the author makes it easy for you to find any of these building. First, he has organized the books to follow Paris's system of arrondissements. The book begins with the 1st Arrondisesment and continues, arrondissement by arrondissement, through the 20th Arrondissement.

There's an excellent, handdrawn map for each arrondissement, showing the exact location of each building described in the text. Also, there are smaller maps of neigborhoods within arrondissements, as well as bird's-eye views of larger building complexes such as the Louvre.

There is ample text describing each building, including the name of the architect who designed it and the name of the patron who paid for its construction.

The author shows the location of the Metro station nearest each building and makes it very easy for you to reach each building.

    3 out of 5 stars needs pix.......1999-10-21

without question the illustrations are fine. the problem is that this book cries out for photos---photos that do justice to each structure, whether historic or contemporary photos are used. poisson has fine sketches, but more is needed. And not only photos, but perhaps more historical background to the buildings.

3 out of 5 stars Detailed drawings and maps put Parisian buildings in context.......1999-07-09

At first, I was disappointed with this book, as it contains only architectural drawings of Parisian buildings and no photos. It also contains only very brief entries on each building, often just the vital statistics of the date built, architecture, patron, etc.

However, reading through it completely I came to appreciate it more. The drawings are all very well done and reveal architectural points and overall themes to buildings that it's hard to capture with photos.

What I liked best, though, were the 3-D maps of each quarter as a whole, with detailed maps of each area within the quarter. These well-drawn maps show the fabric of each area and how the buildings relate to each other and to the open spaces. It also makes it easier to visualize where each building is, if you don't happen to be in Paris when you are reading the book.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, a gem.......2005-11-29

I have made numerous trips to Paris, armed with several guidebooks, including a Frommers, a Lonely Planet and an Eyewitness, and this is by far my favorite. It's fun to browse through and it makes it easy to find something you want to run out and see. It's a relief to find a guide that's not trying to be an exhaustive list of every possible restaurant, museum or hotel. It has just the right amount of practical info to get you where you want to be and ready for the reality of it when you get there.
Until I used this guidebook I didn't realize that guidebooks are often jammed with too much (boring) information.

The graphics and photos are terrific -none of those grainy 80's pictures of people eating croissants under the Eiffel tower.

5 out of 5 stars Buy an extra copy, because everyone will be borrowing this........2002-12-05

Without a doubt, the best travel guide I've ever used. I've been to Paris many, many times, and this guide led me to places I'd never even heard of. Particular strengths are in the areas of Clubs/Bars & Nightlife, Live Music & offbeat museums (who knew there was a Musee de l'Erotisme?) This book is a great choice for the fun-loving urban traveler. I'd highly recommend purchasing this in conjunction with "Time Out Paris", which is exceptionally good for restaurant recommendations.

    Bon voyage!

5 out of 5 stars Crème de la crème.......2002-01-05

I have an absolute infatuation with Paris. I travel there about once a year and now own over 40 travel guides on Paradise, err, I mean Paris. This book is my absolute favorite. Sure, the images and layout on the pages are totally hip, but more important so is the information. Anyone who's read a few travel books on Paris knows about FNAC music shop and Virgin Megastore, but through this book, I also learned about Boulinier, Crocodisc, Chez Sanchez, Monster Melodies, La Silence de la Rue, and Parallèles, which all specialize in a focused area of music. I discovered some incredible boutiques that I've never seen listed elsewhere. A few sights are mainstream (how can one visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe?) but what makes this book unique is the listing of sights, restaurants, and shops that are totally cool that I haven't seen elsewhere. And if you want up-to-the-minute changes to the text, one simply travels no farther than their website. The book also has a "bite" -- raw, honest opinions. One problem with my book, however. I have read it and carried it around so often that my copy is getting quite tattered. For anyone with a true sense of adventure or who wants to explore some unique French spots where you won't encounter dozens of other tourists, this is your book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just hip, it delivers on the goods.......2001-04-16

I've read every kind of guidebook, from Let's Go in the 1980's to Lonely Planet in the 90's and this refreshing addition to the multitude is just the answer for the young (and not so young) adventurous traveller. The graphic design is fun and reveals a smart editor - hire a good graphic designer. The writing is witty and irreverant at times - perfect for those who seek a good experience without the hype. The maps are inadequate - but who travels with one guidebook these days anyway? That's what tourist maps are for.

I particularily liked the photographs, certainly not your average "Gee, here we are in front of the Eifel Tower" standard fare. They capture everything you dream Paris would be: classy, cutting edge and just plain gorgeous. The writing gets to the point quickly with all the necessary facts, yet does allow for some subjectivity that I found refreshing both before our trip and during our stay.

Buy this book if you're a repeat visitor to Paris and looking for another experience beyond the three day quickie when you have barely enough time to see the big league sites. The nightlife and eating sections are worth the price alone. Sure, we carried our Michelin Green Guide because we're architects and enjoy knowing the details, but for a cover to cover guidebook, this is the best yet.

    Product Description

For anyone who loves Paris and the mysterious allure of old houses, this charming, personal and informed memoir makes for perfect reading. In a knowledgeable, literate style that conveys (and makes contagious) Karmel s love of his subject, A Corner in the Marais traces the architectural and social development of the City of Lights, from its origins as a Roman settlement, through major redevelopments brought about by Henry IV and Baron Haussmann, through the recent, and sensitive, renovation and restoration of its old neighborhoods.

The story begins with Karmel and his French wife fulfilling a long-standing dream: buying an apartment in the Marais, Paris s celebrated historic district, the site of some of city s oldest and most picturesque buildings. It soon becomes clear that their new home, which has witnessed six centuries of Parisian life, provides not only a refuge but a fresh and lively vantage point from which to view the city s history, revealing information that will surprise even the most confirmed Francophile.

The book concludes with a walking tour of Marais, in which the principal buildings are discussed with brisk authority. Although Karmel takes pains to fill in historical lacunae from town records, he never loses sight of the fascinating human details whether royal squabbles, commercial transactions, or family chicanery that have played their role in shaping Paris as we now know it.

Illustrated throughout with photographs and period engravings, A Corner in the Marais is ideal reading for anyone who loves exploring the hidden byways of vieux Paris and experiencing history from a personal and singularly engaging viewpoint.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2007-04-27

A charming little history of le Marias and a lot more...

First, Alex Karmel talks about his first trip to Paris, which takes place back in 1949. At the time, he is a freshman at Columbia who gets on a cargo ship, crosses the Atlantic and twelve days later arrives in post-war Europe. Needless to say, Paris is the high point of his journey and over the next three decades he is back to visit it again and again. I found this part of the book especially touching since it portrayed word for word my personal experience with Paris (except for the cargo ship, of course)... Paris enthusiasts will relate to this story and may wish that Karmel had given us a little bit more detail.

In 1982, Alex Karmel and his French wife purchase a 50m2 pied-a-terre on rue des Rosiers. At the core of the book, he lays out the history of the building, which dates back to 1393! In the 600 years of its existence, the house in which the apartment is located has changed owners multiple times. At one time, it was in the hands of the usher of the king; centuries later, a "paticier du Roi" and his family occupied it.

In conclusion, Karmel takes us on a tour of the Marais and talks in brief about the history of various other streets and "hotels" in the area.

The book is very short - only 149 pages. Beautiful black and white pictures of the Marais are taking up at least 10-20 pages. I literally read it in a day and now can't wait to take it with me on my next trip to Paris. It will be so enjoyable to stroll in the Marais and find all the places Karmel is referring to.

3 out of 5 stars More history... and less babble.......2007-02-13

I can't believe I actually skimmed through a particular chapter, I never, ever do that. It tried to bore me to tears with a tedious description of a wrangle over the ownership of an apartment 200 years ago!!! I love this area of Paris, and was hoping that the historical content of this book would leave me delighted... sadly not.
There are some interesting descriptions of life at the time, however the book tends to only touch on the interesting bits and rave about the mundane. I kept hoping it would improve as I pressed on... unfortunately, it didn't.

5 out of 5 stars history and the present.......2006-05-06

I loved this book, especially as I was staying a few doors down from his apartment in a hotel and it made my visit enhanced by his descriptions and thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars an intimate look at history.......2005-10-16

This is a great book to read while in Paris. With the book in hand, we easily found many points mentioned in it (and it answered some questions we had had while walking around the Marais on our own). It's very much a "labor of love" by someone who became intrigued by a small slice of history that, coincidentally, sheds some light on the broader picture over a long period. Anyone who enjoys history will envy the author's dig through old documents and records searching for even tangential mentions of his building, and the people associated with it. (Also recommended, for entirely other reasons: "Paris to the Moon," by Adam Gopnik.)

2 out of 5 stars A Little TOO Much detail.......2004-01-08

man this book gets boring at times. it's more the history of the neighborhood and medieval and renaissance parisian life as it took place around the author's apartment building. Maybe the other books I've read about Paris are overly sentimental, but this book does little to invoke the romance of the city of lights.

for instance: there is an entire chapter devoted to a legal wrangle which took place over the non-payment of taxes on the home, in which various people bickered over the ownership in the 17th century. this should have been at most a paragraph.

there are some fascinating descriptions of period toilets,17th century french bathing habits, and 13th century house construction. the length of space devoted to meaningless crap is stunning.

some bits of it are interesting. i love the marais, and thought it would give a sense of the personality of the area, particularly as the cover makes it seem like quite a warm book. it isn't. but if you want to know about feudal french land taxes and Cardinal Richeliu's preferred urinal (the fireplace), then this book is for you.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2003-06-05

This book is so delightful. As a city dweller in Manhattan with a large roof deck of my own, I needed some inspiration for growing plants upwards on several trellises I installed. This book was perfect! The designs a gorgeous, and the writer gives you enough information to duplicate some of the marvels. Also, if you love Paris as I do, you'll love daydreaming over the photographs.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring..........2002-04-11

Yes, I have a deck built over my garage roof which is accessible from my kitchen/fam. rm. So, I was looking for inspiration on what plants to have there this summer when I happened upon this very attractive book about terrace & rooftop gardens just yesterday at my local bkstore! I am getting lots of ideas from the pics on color combinations, styles and accents. The photos are detailed & altho I haven't read the text yet, it appears to have lots of quotes from the owners perspective on why they chose their plants. The author embellishes this with clear descriptions as well. Photo descriptions usually name the plants shown & I've seen 2 or 3 already of interest that are new to me that I can look up in a gardening guide & perhaps incorporate into my own roof top garden. Ea. section of the book shows several examples of private terrace gardens; i.e. A section on "Open-air dining" showing several terraces planted around tables & chairs for delightful outdoor meals. Another sec. called "Hanging gardens" using bamboo & cascading plants in unusual planting combinations. A thoroughly delightful feast for the eyes; and, one would never guess that all these various styles are within one large city and thusly all in the same approx. climate. I will be devouring this book this spring and enjoying it for many years to come!

I brought this book to Paris along with a couple of other more comprehensive travel guides and found myself going to at least half of the cafes and other destinations that it suggested. In fact, I loaned it to a French friend who was impressed with my grasp of the cool things to do in her city.

Don't use this guide if you are going to Paris for the first time and your itinerary includes the usual suspects: Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, walks on the Champs-Elysees and the left bank. Use it when you've seen Paris before and you're ready to start using your French-language skills and hanging out with the locals. This guide is more minimalist and hipper than most -- if you like that sort of thing, you'll enjoy the author's suggestions and observations in this book.
