5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide Book from the People Who Do it Best!!.......2007-03-09

Another quality guide book from the folks at Lonley Planet. Can't go wrong here, great research as well as a lot of post-Katrina information. Highly reccomended for any savvy traveler!

5 out of 5 stars Yeah you rite, brah!.......2001-01-05

My trip to New Orleans this week was without a doubt my best road trip ever. This guide made it possible. Having only been to New Orleans three times, I was concerned about being able to fill four days with events other than sleeping off the previous night's madness. This book enabled me to drag myself and my friends around town like a native. I cannot recommend this book enough (or the Chicken Roulade Tchoupitoulas at K-Pauls, also 5 stars)!!

5 out of 5 stars The Big Easy made easy.......2001-01-04

I have long been a fan of Lonly Planet and this book helps me continue the trend. With this invaluable guidebook, we selected our transportation from the airport, hotel, and must see, do and eat lists. Everything was great! Information is presented in a clear, concise and HONEST way. We knew where to go and what to skip. The book is durable and easy to tote around. A must!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion!.......2000-09-06

Of all the tour books I hauled with me to the great city of New Orleans, this was the best. Detailed mapping of the city especially the French Quarter. It tells you the truth of where to go and not to go and where you can get a decent cheap meal but it also tells you where to go when you want to wine and dine. It tells you fascinating details of the city and the best haunts of the city and places that you are best missing but it tells you why in great detail. And it tells you of it's famous residents from Anne Rice to Tennessee Williams. I couldn't survive without this book! It is a must have for anybody going to New Orleans!

5 out of 5 stars A Travel Guide to the Mecca of Foodies.......2001-03-01

This is the travel guide for those whose preferences include food, beverage and the social order of eating with others. No hotel listings or must sees for the ordinary tourist. Though centered in New Orleans, the book also includes valuable food resources throughout the cajun country of Southern Louisiana. Great photos make this a nice souvenir or even a gift for the armchair tourist. It also has great maps and sense of the local vernacular. It's small size makes it easy to stash in a pocket or purse for the traveller afoot.

Pableaux is my cousin. As I read through my copy, I jumped to the 'Biscuit Torture', 'Keeper of the Nog', and my grandmother's quiet relishing of a homegrown tomato and a 'pinch' of salt. It was like going back in time and savoring it all over again. I'm not writing because he's my cousin, I'm writing because this book is a great read. I have purchased it for nine friends in the Chicago area. It is informative and concise as well. Great job paul...

I am originally from south Louisiana and would highly recommend this book to anyone visiting or even to someone living in the state.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Pocket Map for New Orleans.......2002-04-05

Lonely Planet puts out a decent plastic covered "pocket" map of New Orleans. It has the street car stops on the map as well as a street index. I was disappointed it did not have an interesting sights or Hotel index but each of those are listed on the map itself. The French Quarter section is quite detailed. The surrounding area of New Orleans is a bit spotty. Created in 2001 so its fairly recent and up to date.

I love New Orleans! The food is great, the weather is usually nice, the history is fantastic and the people are kind of strange. Exactly my kind of place. I had a very limited budget while in college and wanted a book that I could keep with me at all times on my trip to New Orleans. With lots of maps, great pictures and all of the necessary information one needs when on the road, Robert Raburn's Lonely Planet Guide is the best of the best.

I like the LP Condensed for the obvious reasons - lots of info in a convenient size, but this book is so well written that it would be fun to read even if I were not going to New Orleans. "If you hate good food and despise a good time, then New Orleans is still worth it for the architecture alone." The section I found especially useful was Music Clubs because this is hard to find info.

Daniel Sweetwater is a sixteen year old Delaware Indian living with his preacher father among the Cherokee Indians. They are forced to march with the last remnants of the Cherokee nation on a one thousand mile journey from their homes in Georgia to a reservation in the Oklahoma Territory. Cruel men and harsh weather make Daniel's journey a treacherous one. His faith in God is shattered by the pain of injustice and bitterness fills his heart. But God provides hope. Daniel makes friends with two people who change his view of the white man: a wise old frontiersman and a young woman who befriends him. However, unexpected tragedy and the opportunity for revenge cloud his heart once more. With retribution only a knife's blade away, Daniel is faced with a choice. Will he follow a dark trail of vengeance? Or will he follow the truth that lights his path and release a special mercy hidden within his Christian heritage? Beneath the Sky of an Angry God is the first book in t! he Discovery historical fiction series that follows the lives and adventures of young people over several generations. Like Daniel, they struggle to make their way in growing and changing 19th century America and to triumph amid the century-long spiritual conflicts that have shaped our nation past and present.

5 out of 5 stars One world lost.......2003-03-24

This remarkable book, produced by poet and Bruno Schulz scholar Jerzy Ficowski, assembles more than 200 artistic works of the famed Polish Jewish author, best known for The Street of Crocodiles, produced in the 1990s as a play of the same name by Simon McBurney's London Theatre de Complicite. Thanks to that brilliant staging, easily one of the 20th century's most remarkable dramatic productions, audiences of tens of thousands learned of this obscure artist and writer.

Born on July 12, 1892, the third and youngest child of a merchant, Schulz lived and worked in Drohobycz, and reflected in all his works his close connection to his family and place. In 1939, the Soviets occupied eastern Poland, and Schulz survived that period without experiencing the deportation suffered by hundreds of thousands of others.

Still, he was unable to work. But in June 1941, when the Nazis entered the area, he was like all the Jews of Poland further enslaved. The infamous Viennese Nazi and Jew murderer Felix Landau also had a taste for art, and boasted of keeping a Jewish artist slave alive on one daily bowl of soup and slice of bread. Schulz survived a year under Landau's "protection," but on Black Thursday, Nov. 19, 1942, he was shot in the head by Gestapo officer Karl Guenther and buried at night by a devoted friend in a Jewish cemetery that has since disappeared, along with his grave.

Assembled here, with Ficowski's 28-page introduction and his 12-page essay entitled "Catepillar Cat, or Bruno Schulz's Drive into the Future of the Past," are more than 200 Schulz drawings and engravings, most of which reside in Warsaw's Museum of Literature. These include Schulz's Book of Idolatry, an early collection of 25 works, including drawings, circa 1919 and later, on which he worked for several years. It illustrates imaginary scenes of mythical pastorals, nymphs and weird men, fawning on women. There are scenes labeled "Masochistic," which are really more fetishist than the sort of full-blown evil one might expect, a series of nudes, and a 12-print section entitled "The Table," reminiscent of scenes from Street of Crocodiles.

In "Jews," readers are treated to 16 prints and sketches of Jewish worshipers, students and scholars. The collection also includes 16 self-portraits and 8 portraits, all of them remarkable in their intensity and precision. There are also several book covers. But my favorite section is the 44-page group of "Illustrations" from Schulz's writings, including The Street of Crocodiles and Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass.

There is one other collection, Letters and Drawings of Bruno Schulz, that contains some of these works. But those reproductions are few, and their quality far inferior. To my knowledge, this is the best gathering of the artists' pictorial works.

How much more of his work was lost altogether? We may never know. Schulz' brilliance was incalculable, the loss of his work and world, the more so.
