Book Description
An all-new guide to backpacking and hiking in this highly rural and still-unspoiled state.
West Virginia native and long-distance hiker and author Leonard M. Adkins has walked more than 400 miles to uncover 50 hikes available to outdoor travelers of all ages and abilities. From rugged Allegheny Mountain summits to the banks of the Ohio River, the author leads you to hikes beside rushing streams and crashing waterfalls, up to windswept plains whose flora and fauna resemble that of Canada's, and into hill country's hidden valleys. Other journeys traverse rocky mountain crests, reveal far-reaching vistas, travel miles of nearly level rail-trails, and explore historic sites and Civil War battlefields.
One hike passes by a listing wooden shelter once used by President Lyndon B. Johnson; another goes into a series of tunnels cut through the mountains. The shortest hike is 0.5 mile, the longest is a challenging multiday backpacking trek on the state's premier long-distance route, the Allegheny Trail. An overview chart provides information on the 50 hikes at a glance, making it easy to choose the hike that's right for you. Each hike description includes trailhead directions, total distance, hiking time, vertical rise, a detailed account of the route, and a topographic map. 50 black & white photos, 51 maps, index.
Customer Reviews:
I have really enjoyed using this book.......2005-06-24
50 hikes in West Virginia has provided me with information on places that I have been hiking for years, but never knew the background on them, such as the history of the place, why it looks like it does, what plants and animals make their homes there and what their lives are like. So many guidebooks just tell you how to get to a hike and how long it is, but 50 Hikes in West Virginia is so much more than that.
I enjoy sitting down and reading the book before I go on the hike, so that I will know what to be looking for while I'm out there. Get this book and you will have a great time in the wilds of West Virginia.
I agree--great book.......2005-06-10
I agree--great book
I live in Marlinton, almost in the center of hiking in West Virginia, and just bought this book about a month ago. I have found it to be helpful in learning about new places that I have never heard of (and I thought I was a well-seasoned WV hiker). I also like the author's style of writing in that it flows nicely from point to point as it gives the directions you need to find your way along with wonderful pieces of information about the place you are hiking through. Again, I agree with the previous review. This is the best WV hiking guide I have come across.
Great Book!.......2005-06-04
Great book. Well written, interesting background on the hikes--both human and natural history as well as detailed descriptions. All of the hikes I've done so far have been very accurately described. Has some well known hikes, but also many others that are just as good, or better. I've used many other guides to the Mountain State--this one is the best.

This book would probably be more for a fifth or sixth grader. Very long and complex for a 10-year old. The book was interesting but too wordy to hold his interest all the way through.

"The Vikings" is a very informative book which captivated my childrens attention! They could hardly wait for each day's new reading. My 2nd-7th grade children enjoyed learning about the exciting adventures of Leif Erikson and the Viking explorers. We all learned much from this well written introduction to America's earliest explorers and we highly recommend it!

Book Description
A haunting and compelling historical novel, The Sea Road is an ambitious retelling of the Viking exploration of the North Atlantic from the viewpoint of one extraordinary woman, as transcribed by an Icelandic monk commissioned to write her life story by his superiors in Rome. Gudrid lives at the remote edge of the known world, in a starkly beautiful landscape where the sea is the only connection to the shores beyond. It is a world where the old Norse gods are still invoked, even as Christianity gains favor, where the spirits of the dead roam the vast northern ice fields, tormenting the living, and Viking explorers plunder foreign shores. Taking the accidental discovery of North America as its focal point, Gudrid's narrative describes a multilayered voyage into the unknown, all recounted with astonishing immediacy and rich atmospheric detail.

Beautifully Written.......2005-04-22
This book was beautifully written and the images floated inside my head as I was reading this book.
Pedestrian.......2003-02-18
Sophmoric and silly, it still might be a good second-choice for a teen book club. PG-13-rated sex pops up now and again, but no bad language and little violence besides an un-Viking-like punch or two. (In the Sagas guys carry axes and misunderstandings lead to body parts flying off.) Some of the best stories of the original get muddled or left out, so if you skim the dull parts, the book's not very long. For more advanced readers, I'd recommend the Sagas themselves.
highly recommended read.......2002-05-14
for everyone who likes sigrid undset "kristin lavrandsdaughter", halldor laxness "independent people", cecilia hollander "two ravens", and just generally the saga style, this is a well-written, lovely book. (for content see the book-description above). i really enjoyed this and think i will read it again eventually.

Book Description
Ironic, rebellious, and sexy, this collection of short stories and illustrations reflects not only the jagged rhythms of contemporary American writing but also of American life itself with all its hyphenations, its immigrants, and its migrants. Juncture is an anthology of the Barthelmes, Pynchons, Ellisons, Coovers, and Ackers of today. Some of the contributing writers are absurdist, some stream-of-consciousness, some science fiction, and some based in rhythm with the influence of poetry. Original art and drawings illustrate or respond to each story and reflect the kinds of cultural hybridization that has driven many of these writers. The works of such vibrant writers and artists as Jonathan Lethem, Heather McGowan, Colson Whitehead, Alex Shakar, Carl Hancock Rux, Ben Marcus, Said Shirazi, Jorge Pardo, Chris Ofili, Frances Stark, and Jon Plypchuck aka Rudy Bust are included.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read.......2006-01-18
Stapleton and Gonzales have done an excellent job crafting an anthology that is both eclectic and coherent; these stories feel like they belong together, and yet each story seems surprising and highly individual. I was eager to read ahead, to see what unexpected turn the collection would take next. The anthology as a whole feels vital and risky--these writers are nothing if not linguistic virtuosos, and like the jazz riffs and subversive dance beats on the CD that was cut to accompany this book, these stories pulse with immediacy, a sense of urgency that is all too often lacking in contemporary short fiction.
Lively stories - how odd for modern literature!.......2004-01-29
It's possible to feel one is wandering in a cold, mathematical wasteland when reading stories by contemporary writers. How nice to find an anthology of stories that are engaging, provocative, and not completely self-absorbed. Ok, a couple of the writers in the book are self-absorbed, but there are stories by all sorts of other authors, some I'd heard of, some I hadn't, that made me laugh, worry, think about the world, and want to pass the book on. In a literary world where either sullen math or indulgent memoir (or a combination of the two) seems to rule, Juncture is a welcome oddity - you'll think about some of the stories for days and days afterwards and not be pissed off as I usually am.
