Book Description
Although recent rapid industrialization has contributed greatly to improved living standards, it has also resulted in an increase in concentration of 'greenhouse gases' leading to global warming. The relationship between climatic change and agriculture is particularly important, as world food production is under pressure from a growing population. Rice is the second most important crop in the world after wheat, with more than 90% currently grown in Asia where it is the main item of the diet. It has been estimated that rice production needs to increase by 70% over the coming decades to meet the demands of population growth. Hence it is vital to understand the effect of climate change on rice growth, development and production. This book is the outcome of a collaborative study between the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Environmental Research Laboratory and the International Rice Research Institute. It quantifies the impact of climate change on rice production using crop simulation models and integrates existing knowledge of the effects of increased levels of carbon dioxide and temperature. Detailed scenarios are provided for selected major rice-producing countries in Asia: Japan, India, Malaysia, South Korea, China and the Philippines. The book represents a major addition to the literature and will interest crop and environmental scientists, as well as others concerned with world food supplies.
Customer Reviews:
Climate change and rice production in Asia.......2000-06-08
The book provides a concise introduction into modeling the impacts of climate change on rice production in Asia. It goes however beyond the scope of the title as it can serve as an introduction into the problems of modeling climate change in general and particularly to assessing the impacts of climate change on agriculture. As such three of the seven chapters of the first part (Climate change and Rice) serve also the general reader. The second part is concerned with effects of climate change on rice production in selected Asian countries and provides information on possible climate scenarios and their effects on rice production. An identical structure of the six chapters dealing with individual countries and identical modeling procedures allows for easy comparison between countries. The last chapter discusses among others the limitations of the analysis, something not often to be found! A drawback are some black-and-white maps wich are difficult to read. All in all however an excellent book on this topic that may not only serve scientists but also (to some extent) the general reader.

Impressive.......2001-03-01
I borrowed the first edition from the library and I found that the book gave good itinerary suggestions as well as a good background on the area. Also, it doesn't limit itself to Provence and the Riviera; instead, it has a whole chapter on the Roussillon, which is another beautiful region of the South of France. I am buying this updated edition with much confidence.
Finally! the ultimate guide to the Provence.......2000-10-12
A must read if you want to go to the south of france

Book Description
The Plains Indians have entered into American mythology as fierce nomadic warriors who cared more about personal honor than about the outcome of any larger conflict. This representation of them, so attractive because it supports the idea of nobility in defeat, is countered by Bernard Mishkin in his classic study. Mishkin examines the Indians' economic motivations in waging war and the consequences of their changing relations with other peoples. In Rank and Warfare among the Plains Indians he seriously questions the prevailing static picture of tribes, and even tribal areas, insulated from external historical forces and more or less unchanging in their social and cultural arrangements from prehistoric to reservation times.
The first to link the individual pursuit of social status through military activities to the communal economics of Plains life, Mishkin demonstrates that the key to this connection was the horse, which the Spanish had introduced about the beginning of the seventeenth century. The extent to which the horse transformed native society becomes clear in this Bison Book reprint of Mishkin's book, first published in 1940. A student of anthropology at Columbia University who came under the influence of Ruth Benedict, Bernard Mishkin did field work among the Kiowa Indians and taught at Brandeis University.
Customer Reviews:
I was surprised to learn.......2006-09-11
that the Kiowas were so class conscious. This brief book is based on the author's field research conducted in the 1930s and could have used a glossary for the many Kiowa terms used throughout. Also helpful would have been a pronunciation chart for these terms.

Book Description
Corn occupied an important place in the lives of many Native communities that lived along the Upper Missouri River. In this landmark book, George F. Will and George E. Hyde introduce readers to some fifty varieties of native corn discovered in the Missouri Valley. Equally important, they provide an indispensable overview of Indian agricultural techniques there, including methods of harvesting and storing the crop, the preparation of corn for food, and the role of the crop in intertribal and Indian-white trade. Corn was not only grown, traded, and eaten, it also had spiritual significance. A final contribution of this book is a discussion of the presence and value of corn in American Indian myth, religion, and ritual.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book.......2007-06-04
If you are a gardener, are interested in Native American culture, and especially if you are both, you may value this as highly as I do. Through interviews with surviving women who remembered the details of their tribes' agricultural methods, and the way of life/religion that went with them, the authors have made an important contribution in an area that was undervalued at the time (the early 1900's). But thank goodness they had the foresight to put this information to paper. The book describes tools, varieties, planting methods, and agricultural customs of the Upper Missouri tribes. Thanks to the authors' preservation work, and the work of others, some of the varieties mentioned can still be found. If you are interested, google up the Seed Saver's Exchange in Iowa, and add a new dimension to your gardening.

Book Description
Kitchi-Gami, Kohl's classic book on the Ojibway of Lake Superior, is a fascinating study in contrasts and similarities. Its author was an urbane, well-traveled European, a trained ethnologist, and an accomplished popular writer. Kohl turned his sensitive powers of observation on a nation of people he found not unlike his own. Perceptively and elegantly, he described daily life among the Ojibway, detailing religious practices, legends, foods, games, medicines, homes, clothing, and methods of travel, hunting, and fishing. Kohl's gentle humor and candor, and his respect for the Objiway people, anticipate later developments in American ethnology and make his writing especially appealing to the modern reader.
Customer Reviews:
The way of the Ojibway.......2005-07-09
If you want to know how the ojibway indians lived in the early 17th century (200 years after meeting the first europeans) this is the book to read. It is written in a very analytical way and it becomes very obvious that the Kohl falls in love with these people.
He explains how they make their canoes and wigwams. How they prepare their food. How and why they preform traditional fesitvals/initiations. He also gives a number of accounts on the stories of nanabojou, the main character in ojibway myth.
At the end of the book he remarks that the most interesting thing about these people is the stories of nanabojou. Not so much the actual stories, but the fact that he is their main mythological character and not worshipped like herakles or shiva or thor or gilgamesh were.
