Book Description
This is among the first books published by Timber Press, and after more than two decades it continues to be one of our signature bestsellers. A comprehensive source of information on the culture, identification, and nomenclature of Japanese maples, it describes each of the 320 cultivars of Acer palmatum and 60 cultivars of other Japanese maple species, plus briefly mentions 150 promising new plants. The index lists every horticultural name published, ensuring that Japanese Maples will continue to be the foremost reference book on this wonderfully versatile collection of ornamental plants.
This fully updated third edition has been revised by Peter Gregory and is even more international than its predecessors. It adds approximately 100 important new maple hybrids and selections that have been introduced since the last revision by Vertrees in 1987, bringing to nearly 400 the total number of plants described. Nomenclature has been updated to conform to current standards, many additional photographs have been included, and descriptions have been rearranged for greater ease of reference.

A must have.......2007-08-31
Though I have not digested the entire volume yet, I am constantly consulting its pages. As a fairly novice collector of these plants, I have found this book to be indespinsable. The introduction of new cultivars as well as many new photographs make volume three a superior reference.
Aborist and Horticultural essential.......2007-06-10
A very informed and illustrated book with almost every 300+ cultivar imaginable. Also gives cultivar no longer cultivated, with all the names of cultivar including many misnames used and cultivar which have been produced which are not confirmed or are instable. The book has a detail list of species in brief form for quick reference when planting of considering cultivar.I look forward to the updated with the newer cultivar.
The only thing lacking is more detail on growing and producing cultivar. eg.grafting, cutting, and pruning, etc which you have to get from other texts.
Japanese Maples.......2007-03-12
THE reference book on Japanese maples. Excellent information and pictures. Very usual for my purposes in selecting trees to fit my property and conditions.
Japanese Maples Review.......2006-08-13
This is an excellent book. J.D. Vertrees did a wonderful job of classifying the various Japanese Maples. The revision and expansion done by Peter Gregory has added to J.D.'s original work.
The pictures are excellelnt. This is a must have book for every Bonsai/Japanese maple enthusiast.
Newer is Not Always Better.......2006-04-24
Before you consider purchasing this book, I strongly suggest you try to find the second edition, which, while less comprehensive, is better organized. In addition, a comparison of the two finds that some of the best images in the second edition were not carried over to the third.
The worst shortcoming of both editions is the lack of images of fully grown trees. It's nice to know what the leaves look like but, if you are trying to identify a particular plant or select one for your garden, you need much more than is provided here. Of course, with the incredible number of Acer Palmatum cultivars, it is unlikely any one book can do more than scratch the surface.
Nevertheless, the second edition is the first book on Japanese Maples I would buy - as a matter of fact, I just bought one after mine wandered.
Book Description
With their delicate foliage, seasonal color changes, and intricate pattern of branching, Japanese maples are among the most popular and suitable plants for bonsai design. In this long-awaited book, internationally renowned expert Peter Adams discusses both the specific horticultural needs of Japanese maples as bonsai subjects and illustrates proven techniques for creating and maintaining beautiful specimens. Although aimed at an audience that has some familiarity with bonsai techniques, the book deliberately shows a mix of bonsai at different stages in their training, so that less experienced enthusiasts can gain new ideas and inspiration from trees that are "works in progress." Much more than a mere "how-to" book, Bonsai with Japanese Maples is a forthright attempt to look at bonsai as art objects and to critique and assess them from an artist's perspective.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Maples.......2007-05-14

Japanese Maples.......2007-03-29
This book is great. There's a lot of detail specific to trident and japanese maples. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with maples.
The perfect product for bonsai interested maple lovers.......2007-01-22
Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.
After all these years.......2007-01-05
I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

Just the facts Jack.......2007-07-03
Pocket Guide to Japanese Maples is an excellent companion to the ultimate maple reference book entitled, Japanese Maples by J.Vertrees and Peter Gregory. I find this book to be well thought out and consolidated. It includes addition information as to cultivation and some newer cultivar. This book gives the reader the most important information quickly, easily and succinctly. I is a very welcome addition and most appreciated.
Handy for arborists and horticulturalists.......2007-06-10
Small brief and compact but very detailed synopsis of the about 300 cultivar. Useful for taking to the nursery or when you go to gardens with cultivar. Well illustrated and designed for quick reference.
Excellent Resource for Acer Palmatum Lovers!!.......2007-05-27

Customer Reviews:
They take a good whack at the topic.......2005-11-02
Nice pictures, and descriptions of many Maples. It may be lacking installation and propagation details. There are many good descriptions and may be adequate for most novices, they show the differences in the cultivars of a good sampling of maples, including the Hybridized, Japanese,Korean and Chinese maples. I have enjoyed the book yet there is much room for improvement, but that book would cost seventy to one hundred dollar plus. You get what you pay for most of the time and you do get what you for here as well. One book can not cover the topic in all its fascists, there are to many different point of view, qualifications, biases and specific interest all play a key roll in the author's compilation of the book and can she/he write and can she plant a tree with success or is she just faking us out and spiting out a book on contract .
Maple Mania.......2001-08-15
This book is a must for anyone with a thirst for deeper knowledge of trees. James Harris' book describes the botany and world distribution of the massive genus Acer clearly and concisely. For identification of individual sub-species, the photographs and line drawings show amazing detail of bark, seed and leaf. The section, A-Z of species, deals with each Acer in sufficient and useful detail. Not only is the book an excellent reference for botanists/arborists, but also for the keen gardener, as the sections on cultivation and planting are highly informative. Personally, as a Bonsai enthusiast, I have found the book invaluable in researching a particular species of tree.
A small, yet great maple "dictionary".......2001-03-30
Of the maple books I have seen and viewed, this has been the cheapest and the most informational for its size. The book contains information, not only on Acer palmatum, but on all trees of this genus. It provides lots of good and useful general information on the care, propagation, and classification. It provides many pages of color photos of the many maples that are described in detail in the book. For me, this book helped me decide exactly which maple tree was to my taste and perfect for my gardern. So interested in maples? Get this book!

What a treasure!.......2007-06-06
We borrowed this book from the library and loved it so much that we bought our own copy. It's beautiful and informative, tells a great story, too. Both my kids (3 and 7) love this book. It's ideal for reading to kids of different ages because the younger ones will enjoy the illustrations and story and the older ones will appreciate all that as well as the science.
Time passes as the Big Tree Watches.......2000-05-14
This is a wonderful book. It is the story of a maple tree inNew York state; how it began from a seed, grew up in the forestprimeval, survived the pioneer's axe to live in a family's yard, has provided shade and syrup to generations passing on its way to becoming the venerable giant it is now. Part science, part American history, all beautiful. My son has enjoyed this book since he was about 3 (he's reading it himself now at 7) and I'm buying extra copies as gifts.
The Big Tree Confusion.......2000-04-08
I came to Amazon, as I typically do, looking for something special. 1,000 wods, hunh? Okay. One of my fondest childhood memories is of a book entitled The Big Tree. It was read to my 2nd grade class by a wonderful old grandmotherly teacher...Mrs. Woods. This was at Wineteer Elementary School at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas in 1962. That book literally changed my life, in the sense that it alone initiated a love affair with reading that has lasted my entire life. The book was about the life and times of a giant redwood tree in California...as I recall the story spanned several hundred years. Clearly, it made a terrific impression on me. I came here looking for this book. Instead I have found Bruce's book, which appears to be a similar story told from an oak tree's point of view. I can say this about that, considering the fact that I have not read Bruce's book. If it is half a good as the book I recall, I would recommend this story whole heartedly. If a book like this can reach your grade school child the way the redwood story affected me, it will be an investment in the future the likes of which you can only begin to imagine. Bruce, thank you for keeping the dream alive.

Great Resource Book.......2001-11-14
When I bought this book there was no review, so I took a chance but this turned out to be the most valuable book I bought about sugaring. It tells stories, has projects, games, recipes, jokes, how-tos, knowledge. This book is not a "story" book, it's a black & white illustrated book to teach children everything about sugaring in a fun sort of way. It's well worth the price!
Book Description
Cultivating maples in gardens or containers.
Prized for their graceful appearance and brilliantly-colored leaves, some maples flower in the spring while the red leaves of others in fall brighten the dullest day. Maples can be upright or weeping, giving gardeners additional options when landscaping.
Maples offers practical advice for using these trees to their best effect.
Maple varieties come in bewildering numbers. This book breaks down the major groups and explains the conditions needed for growing each. Overcoming adverse conditions is covered in detail.
Key sections of the book include:
- Cultivation
- Propagation
- Japanese maples
- North American maples
- Maples from other lands
- Landscaping with maples
- Companion planting
- Maples in containers

must have Maple book for all gardeners.......2007-07-06
Enjoyed this book. Look forward to other plant books by this author. Especially if he does Viburnums as stated on the flap of the Maple book.
The Connoisseurs Guide to the Maple Family.......2005-01-14
THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO MAPLES is far more than the definitive book on all of the 250 species of this favorite tree for all seasons. It stands solidly as an art book for environmentalists, arborists, and lovers of color photography.
In his Introduction Antoine Le Hardy De Beaulieu presents a warmly written history of the maple trees, with special attention to the areas of the world where this ubiquitous genus appears. Then follows a beautifully organized guide to each of the many species, with not only lush color photographs of the trees in the environment but also with close up views of specifics that assist the gardener in identifying each tree. Then at the end of this large volume considerable space is devoted to landscape placements of these magnificent trees that not only offer suggestions to planners, but also can be viewed as fine art photography. Highly Recommended volume. Grady Harp, January 2005
Really magnificent.......2004-03-05
The Timber Press has been putting out lavishly printed volumes (full color on glossy paper) for awhile now. With this book they appear to have lifted the publishing of fine books to a new level. They not only found a group of people dedicated to their subject and to fine photography who captured the saillant features in almost invariably excellent pictures, but also managed to find a layout to do these pictures full justice. Basically (almost) every maple species (or subspecies) has two pages devoted to it (or a multiple of that): a page of text and a page of pictures. Where more pages are devoted to a single maple sometimes a full page is devoted to a single picture, but this is the exception. Usually there are several pictures per page with large pictures of habit and smaller pictures of detail. The effect is quite splendid. A quick browse through the text reveals nothing out of place, with a recent classification being followed, although I suspect that a really close look will show up nitpickingly small errors. All in all this is really magnificent maple book, with a considerable wow!-factor.

Book Description
"What I found most enjoyable about this novel is that it steers clear of stereotypes about Indian immigrant families. The Bhaves and the Moghes are refreshingly different from some families that inhabit the world of diasporic fiction. There are no daughters being threatened with arranged marriages, no authoritarian parents, and no weepy sentimentality about the land left behind."-(Nalini Iyer, on SAWNET Book Pages)
"This is the story of two families that not only dive deep into dangerous waters, but surface and live to tell the tale."-(Michelle Reale in Rain Taxi Online)
"A hymn to the joys and sorrows of family, in the best, most inclusive sense of the word." Andreas Schroeder
