Book Description
This second edition of Sedges: Cyperus to Scleria brings up to date the identification of species of sedges in Illinois (except Carex) since publication of the first edition in 1976.
During the intervening years, several additions to the sedge flora of Illinois have been made, and many new distributional records have been added. Also, a large number of nomenclatural changes have taken place, resulting in several alterations of scientific names. New illustrations have been provided for all of the additions.
In his introductory material, Robert H. Mohlenbrock discusses the morphology of sedges and the habitats where they can be found. Although the semitechnical keys and descriptions are familiar to experienced botanists, he has simplified them as much as possible to accommodate the novice in sedge identification. He has also included a new key to the sedges and to each genus in which additional species have been added.
For each species, Mohlenbrock has provided a description, statement of habitat and range, Illinois distribution map, discussion, synonymy, and line illustrations showing its diagnostic features. Sedges: Cyperus to Scleria contains 128 illustrations.

Paris For Dummies.......2007-08-23
I just got back from Paris and I used this book everyday. It was very helpful
I Wish I had this book in 1996!.......2007-07-11
I went to Paris, France in 1996. It was a dream come true. I didn't have a guide book of the city and I think this book would have been quite useful if I had to choose about books for Paris, France. One of the American writers, Janet Flanner also known as Genet, wrote from Paris' Hotel Continental for decades. Now that I have this book, I pick it up to look and read about a location, a restaurant, an attraction, etc. What troubled me the most about my trip to Paris was the panhandlers, the homeless children, and the beggars during the hot summertime. I suggest that Paris is not the place to be during a heatwave. Most attractions and Parisian hotels don't have air-conditioning. Maybe that's changed since my last visit. Oh, I yearn to go back again and this book makes me want to go more than ever.
Take It To Paris.......2007-05-19
Excellent, well-written, with a great deal of practical, currrent information , a treasure to take with you to Paris
Keeping up the "Dummies" excellence....!.......2006-12-25
My wife and I (very unitiated to Paris) returned from a beautiful trip there last November -- a large part of that due to this book. Ms. Pientka really tries hard to let you get the well known and not so well known of the city and explains the pros/cons to areas so incredibly well. Other books might have more specifics about attractions, but they won't be as comrpehensive as this one. We loved her restaurant choices (even as Vegeterians she had some places for us!). The book was the basis for our trip and we felt we hit everything we wanted (included an out of the way flea market -- my wife loves going to them here and was excited to learn that one happens on the weekends in Paris). The only cons were that it would have been nice to have metro stops (and lines) listed next to each entry and her hotel list could have been more comprehensive. We booked a hotel on our own (not in her book) and loved it. Whether you are going to be in the City of Lights for a 2-3 days or a month, you will love this book.
Worth it.......2004-05-11
A great all round guide, took the guesswork out of most aspects of the trip. If you take time to read and digest this book, this may be the only reference guide you will ever need (plus a decent map like the Streetwise) -- especially if you are going for the first time. We went to two of the restaurants mentioned in this book and they were both top notch, with excellent food and service (in English) and low prices -- a definite rarity in Paris. That alone paid for the book twice over. Also, the walking guides and tips were very useful in planning our days.
In fact, the only advice in this book that I'd disagree with would be "Tips for dressing" -- I wore ratty jeans with black sneakers all through, even to the decent restaurants, and found to my surprise that so did everyone else. In fact it makes you fit in better with local young and the hip :-)

Not Dummy Friendly.......2005-01-25
This book stinks. It lacks entire regions of France. For example, it omits the Dordogne, which is a large, economical for the traveler, region of beautiful countryside replete with prehistoric cave art and medieval castles. There are no photographs. Descriptions of lodgings are few and good budget lodgings nearly nonexistent. Despite having such little information, the book is large, thick, and heavy. This is not a book to carry around with you during your travels. I'm not sure who this book is designed for.
Great Book.......2002-05-26
France for Dummies was an excellent read. This book was very in depth without being too confusing. I recommend this book for anyone who is not "the seasoned traveler." I am traveling to France for a month and I will make sure I keep this book with me at all times for reference.
Book Description
This book is a teacher's resource that provides complete instructions and teaching techniques for teaching basic physics principles through simple activities that use popular children's toys like Legos, Tomy Push-n-go fire engine, magnet cars, balloons, bouncing balls, and others. The activities are grouped by appropriate grades, i.e., K-3, 4-6, and 7-9. Each activity provides the teacher with a list of key science topics.

Review of Teaching Physics with Toys.......2005-09-07
Although this book has what seem to be some really fun and illustrative experiments, I was a bit put off with how many toys and other prepatory materials I will need to purchase. Since I home school my daughter, I will be buying things for one time use. I'm not sure how much I will actually use this book.
Good Resource for the Science Teacher's Library.......2000-08-09
This book offers 42 activities, evenly distributed among K-3, 4-6, and 7-9. As is often the case with such resources, those categories meant little to my eighth grade students or me. If you are a teacher, you know that you can adapt almost any activity to make it fit your needs.
The activities all include the following well developed sections: key science topics, key process skills, time required, materials - for getting ready - for introducing the activity - for the procedure - for variations and extensions, safety and disposal, getting ready, introducing the activity, procedure, variations and extensions, explanation, assessment options, cross-curricular integration, and some of the activities also have hand-out masters. (I wish they all did, but the assessment options provided are a good substitute.)
My only problem with the book is that some of the activities do require the purchase of a real toy. I found that sometimes this resulted in a time-consuming quest. I put an asterisk after those activities requiring items I found difficult to locate (but eventually did).
Activities: (1) Gravity Makes Things Fall (2) Comparing Mass Using A Pan Balance (3) Measuring Mass Using a Pan Balance (4) Ramps and Cars (5) Balloon on a String (6) Ping-Pong™ Puffer (7) Balancing Stick (8) The Skyhook (9) The Six-Cent Top (10) Bouncing Balls (11) Snap, Crackle, Pop (12) Magic Balloon (13) Magnet Cars (14) School Box Guitar (15) Forces and Motion (16) Crash Test (17) Two-Dimensional Motion (18) Understanding Speed* (requires wind-up walking toys) (19) Push-n-Go® (20) The Toy that Returns (21) Physics with a Darda® Coaster* (22) Exploring Energy with an Explorer Gun®* (23) Bounceability (24) Energy Toys Learning Center (25) Simple Machines with Lego® (26) Gear Up with a Lego Heli-Tractor (27) Levitation Using Static Electricity (28) Doc Shock* (requires Operation® game) (29) Walking Feet* (30) Downhill Racer (31) The Projectile Car (32) Balance Toys and the Center of Gravity (33) Whirling Stopper (34) Floating Cans (35) Falling Filters (36) Stick Around (37) Delta Dart (38) Mini Motor (39) Sound Tube (40) Bull Roarer (41) Singing Chimes (42) Tube Spectroscope

A Good Theory Book If That's All You Need.......2006-09-15
I think that Follari wrote this book with a particular course aim in mind, one focused ONLY on theory. It only covers historical figures, theory, curriculum basics, and some issues of early childhood education. It doesn't go into any dynamics of the classroom by comparing infants/toddlers to primary school children and kindergarteners. If this is all that you need, then you have it here. I, however, think more is needed to make the book worth the price.
It's divided into three parts: foundations, models, and a "practical" section (which she calls Beginning the Journey). Part 1 focuses on the basics (obviously) while Part Two outlines the curriculum models that early childhood professionals must know about today. Part 3 is one chapter, an amalgamation of all of the previous eleven chapters into some sensible professional framework. It makes for a very dense, kind of abstract manual on the whole.
Out of all of the three sections, Part 1 works the best namely because of how it briefly, informatively, but clearly outlines the historical figures and movements of early childhood education in Chapter Two. This segues perfectly into constructivism within Chapter Three because it prevents the student from being overwhelmed with a large slab of theory at one time. Presenting, for example, Vygotsky's theories in a historical context followed by presenting his theory from a pedagogical context allows a young teacher-in-training to absorb the nuances of his ideas for long-term keeping rather than short-term test cramming.
Part Two works decently, but I think that Follari tries too hard (but valiantly) to condense the theories down while simultaneously keeping as many details as possible. Consequently, all of the details of, for example, High Scope are there, but little explanation is given to secure a firm understanding of it. These chapters go by a bit too fast for a novice. It's okay for a veteran teacher, but a new one needs a little more slowness and gradual detail...more hand-holding.
Part Three is only eight pages. It could have been integrated into Chapter One possibly.
On the whole, we get exactly what the title tells us: theory. I find it somewhat refreshing to read it without context, but, again, an undergraduate may need more practical meat to chew on. I think this book would make a good supplementary text rather that the anchoring textbook of an undergraduate introductory early childhood class. I would instead check out books by George S. Morrison, Feeney/Moracik, Jo Ann Brewer, and Robert Berk.
Valiant Effort, though:)

Science Surprises by Jean R. Feldman.......2000-04-12
This book is geared towards early childhood education and does a great job in compiling a variety of activities that are easy to understand, with materials readily available. I teach 100 youngsters (pre-school through senior kindergarten) and they love the activities. There are extensions for all of the projects so that teachers can pursue each project in greater depth. One suggestion for Dr. Feldman would be to increase the amount of information in the "explanation" section at the bottom of each experiment or project. Overall, any teacher of young children will find lots of great stuff in this book.
Book Description
Teachers will love bringing literature to the classroom as a vehicle for language and concept development, for creative expression and development of higher thinking skills, while promoting the joy of reading.
A Magical Encounter: Latino Children's Literature in the Classroom is divided in four major parts: Part One outlines theoretical principles which ground the practices suggested, offering some reflections on the role of literature for children and adolescents in the language arts curriculum. It presents the basic tenets of "Transformative Education" as they relate to books for children and adolescents, and describes the "Creative Reading" methodology and its applications. The "One Thousand Book Classroom" is outlined, as well as what a "Transformative Language Arts Classroom" would look like. Part Two overviews the evolution of Latino literature for children and adolescents in the United States. It includes an extensive bibliography of books published by Latino and Latina Authors. Part Three describes the role of the various literary genres in the classroom. Part Four offers suggestions for the application of the theory. The activities suggested are accompanied by examples using specific books.
