      2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2004-09-10

I hoped to kill two birds with one stone with this book as I plan to visit both Savannah and Charleston. I have only made it to Savannah so far, but found this book very sparse on information. There was only a very small section on Savannah which contained one lone page of restaurant listings. There was also only a small piece on Bonaventure Cemetary (two paragraphs), and the book did not include any maps or directions to get you to the cemetary and it is quite off the beaten track! I would recommend saving your money for real guidebook.

      5 out of 5 stars A well-written guide.......2004-04-06

I used this book on my first trip to Savannah, and it was great. The author has a lot of personality, and he vividly describes the people, places, and atmosphere of this most unique place. We tried out a number of the recommendations in the book, and they were all good. A highly recommended guidebook to a fantastic city.

5 out of 5 stars Excellently written book!.......2003-09-23

I really enjoyed the details and humor in this Moon book. It's really well written and has great maps! I took it with me on a recent trip to Charleston and found it to be an excellent resource. Mike Sigalas really captures the feel of the region and has great recommendations.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Guidebook; Many errors........2003-08-14

I was very disappointed using this book on my first trip to Charleston and Savannah.

The maps contained numerous errors. The index was incomplete, omitting many attractions contained in the book. It was frustrating trying to find information.

The hotel and restaurant listings were skimpy, and omitted helpful information. It took me 30 minutes to locate one restaurant because the map was wrong, and then when I arrived, I discovered that the restaurant was only open on the weekends.

The main strengths of this book are the historical background and anecdotes (some of which were more fiction than fact, according to the docents I met at the museums and plantations.)

I have been a fan of the Moon Handbook series. Their books on Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Yellowstone Nat'l Park are excellent. This one, however, was bad.

Luckily, I brought a second guidebook along, Fodors. While I usually don't like Fodors, this one was good, and was more helpful than the Moon Handbook. Save your money and buy the Fodors.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to two of my favorite cities........2003-04-05

I have been to Charleston and Savannah several times, so I picked up this book to see if Mike Sigalas "got it right."

      He certainly did.

This book not only tells you the things you ought to see, but also tells you things that you ought to know to really appreciate these two extraordinary places. For example, his extensive history sections help explain why these two cities are not simple clones of each other.

His small articles do not shy away from controversial topics. When writing about the very few remaining slave houses, for example, he explains how these humble structures were not torn down to obliterate any visible remembrance of the bad old days of slavery, but fell the same fate as almost every other working class house from that time.

The book has good maps and directions, and--best of all--in my estimation, it does not sound like it was written by the local Chamber of Commerce. Sigalas's humor comes through without feeling a need to show off.

This book is best read before you go to Charleston and/or Savannah. It will make your visit(s) so much better.

5 out of 5 stars Want to start a coin collection?.......2005-04-17

I've practically collected coins since I was born. Since pennies don't have much purchasing power anymore (you can't even get a piece of gum for a penny!) and are numerous this is probably the best one to start with.

This one isn't as easy as it looks to complete. You have to find several varities of pennies made in 1982. Also, the "S" mintmark coins from 1968-1974 are a challenge. And the pennies from the early Lincoln Memorial days--the 1959 and early 1960s--aren't as numerous as they used to be. Nevertheless, this will provide one with a nice challenge that will eventually grow to encompass nickels and other denominations.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Educational Book.......2000-12-30

Over the past two years I have purchased about ten Lincoln Penny folders. To fill them we save pennys and sometimes at the bank I will buy rolls of pennys for fifty cents each. My grandchildren and I spend hours searching these coins for the correct dates. They learn to identify numbers, mint marks, and I read to them about President Abraham Lincoln, who is featured on the Lincoln penny. These coin books are gifts that are never thrown away. Sometimes I wonder just how much a Wheat Penny book would be worth if my Grandparents had filled one in for me....

                    Book Description

Two years after Lincoln's death, Congress created a Lincoln Memorial Association to create a lasting tribute to the 16th President. It took, however, more than 50 years for that tribute to be built.

This book examines not only the rather lengthy story of Lincoln's memorial, but also the man and his presidency. Always first or second on historians' lists of Greatest U.S. Presidents, Lincoln is an admirable study. From his poor, frontier childhood; to becoming the proud and powerful man who led a nation through a terrible war, wrote two of the most famous speeches in U.S. history and the Emancipation Proclamation-there is much to be learned.

The Lincoln Memorial, in addition to being one of the most-recognized U.S. historical monuments, has itself made history. Students will learn about Marian Anderson's famous 1939 performance (after the internationally famous contralto was denied access to Constitution Hall) and about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" keynote speech during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Original documents, time lines, question-and-answer activities as well as materials that relate past history to present day reinforce key terms and concepts, produce context and explore relevance. Multiple intelligence activities, Internet research ideas and an answer key complete this vital resource.

                          Book Description

This inspiring story of little-known civil rights champion Oscar Chapman and his role in Marian Anderson's concert at the Lincoln Memorial reminds readers that one person can truly make a difference.

On Easter Sunday 1939, Marian Anderson performed at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in front of a crowd of over 75,000 people. The person largely responsible for putting her there was a white man, Oscar Chapman, assistant secretary of the interior under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

When Chapman learned that Marian Anderson was not allowed to sing at Constitution hall because of the color of her skin, he took it upon himself to do the impossible: find Marian Anderson an appropriate venue for a concert and make an important statement about equality and the rights of all Americans. With support from the highest levels of U.S. government, Chapman helped produce a landmark concert that-for at least one evening-bridged the color divide to bring a city and much of the nation together.

Author Deborah Hopkinson tells the inspirational story of Oscar Chapman, including his childhood exposure to racism that led to his lifelong commitment to ending bigotry. An author's note provides additional historical context. Illustrator Leonard Jenkins remarkable illustrations recreate a bygone era and pay tribute to remarkable real-life people and a magical moment in modern history.

                            Book Description

In 1995 the Getty Museum acquired a sketchbook by the prolific artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Its images, dating from approximately 1877, embrace a variety of themes from everyday Parisian life the cafe, concert, brothels, and ballet and were created during Degas's weekly visits to the home
of writer Ludovic Halevy, the first owner of the sketchbook. They show Degas's remarkable powers of observation, as well as the sureness and economy of his line.

Reproduced here are twenty-eight pages from the sketchbook, along with a brilliant essay that places Degas within the contexts of both the cultivated salon of the Halevy family and the larger world of late-nineteenth-century Paris, which the notoriously difficult artist both celebrated and shunned.
In addition, the book features a transcript of a lively conversation about the sketchbook among artist David Hockney, Getty Museum director John Walsh, and Lee Hendrix, curator of drawings for the Getty Museum.

4 out of 5 stars I learned a great deal about using a minimum of markings.......2004-03-01

As a writer in mathematics and computer science, I am occasionally required to sketch diagrams describing my work. This is of course difficult, as I have no training in this area. To assist, I consult books on sketching, and this one is quite interesting. These are sketches in the true sense, with a minimum of markings. Mathematics is a field where a minimum of statements is generally the best strategy for explanation. Therefore, I learned a great deal about sketching for mathematics by looking over the diagrams in this book.
The sketches depict people in many different activities, from playing cards to dancing. Given this broad coverage of people living their lives, there is much that artists can learn from them as well.
