Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Reprint - Marginally Useful.......2007-04-30

This small book documents many non-native grasses and a few native grasses found in California. However, it's reprint as a field guide is marginally useful. Some of the cross-referenced graphics don't exits. The book is visually uncomfortable to read because of inconsistent text formatting and line crowding. Most illustrations and all of the photographs are reproduced too small.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate for grass identification, but a little outdated........1999-06-20

The book serves well for the identification of exotic grasses recently found in Southern California, 1999. However, many of the scientific names of native California bunch grasses have been reclassified in recent years. Unless you know what the new names are, the guide may not serve you well. Additional pictures would have been much more helpful for many species.

      Book Description

California boasts one of the richest assemblages of native plant species in the world, and among the state's most beautiful flowering plants are its monocotyledons--a large and varied group including lilies, irises, grasses, orchids, agaves, and even palms. Wild Lilies, Irises, and Grasses, created under the auspices of the California Native Plant Society, tells how to grow California monocots in the garden. Beautifully illustrated with color photographs and line drawings, the book contains valuable information on exactly which species are best adapted to garden conditions, how to grow them, and where to obtain them from nurseries and mail-order suppliers. Gardeners can be highly successful with many of California's most exquisite native monocots, and propagating these native plants helps ensure their long-term preservation.
Each chapter includes introductory information for gardeners and tips on garden cultivation and propagation, while individual plant descriptions provide greater detail on each species, including its distribution and habitat in the wild, cultural preferences and tolerances in the garden, and features that distinguish the plant from similar species. With its valuable combination of horticultural and botanical information, this book is the perfect introduction to California's monocots. It will inspire gardeners as well as landscape designers, city planners, and others to consider these lovely native species when designing, planting, and approving plans for landscapes in California.

4 out of 5 stars A New Classic For California Native Plant Enthusiasts.......2004-04-28

Over a period of almost 20 years, I've read every new and old book on gardening with California Native Plants. For about the last eight of those years, I've been waiting for someone to come out with a worthwhile new book on the subject. I think my waiting is over.

Gardening With California Monocots is a well-written guide to planting native orchids, irises, grasses and other monocots (plants that germinate with a single seed-leaf). The book explains not only where these plants occur in the wild, but also describes the conditions they require to succeed in your garden. The discussion on garden-worthy bunchgrasses is the most valuable and comprehensive I've ever seen. Even the gurus of california native plant authors, Marjorie Schmidt and Glenn Keator, have never covered the subject so thoroughly.

In addition, Gardening with California Monocots has something which most other books on the subject lack: stunning pen and ink drawings of the plants together with equally-beautiful color plates.

The book has one shortcoming. The authors don't go into enough detail about propogation of each specific plant. I wish the authors had provided specific information for the propogation of each plant discussed - explaining what time of year to gather seeds, take cuttings or make divisions, what medium to use to plant the seeds or cuttings, and how to pretreat the seeds, if necessary. I suspect the authors left this information out purposely to discourage readers from gathering seeds and cuttings from wild, often endangered, populations. Someday I'll find a book which provides all that information. In the meantime, however, Gardening With California Monocots is a must-read for native plant gardeners.

        Book Description

Grass Valley was named for its spring-fed meadows, but its history springs from deep below the soil. An immeasurable wealth of gold lay in ancient river courses, embedded in quartz, or scattered capriciously in surface gravel. Vibrantly entrepreneurial since its inception, Grass Valley echoed with the roar of stamp mills crushing gold-bearing quartz 24 hours a day, every day, for decades. Its mines produced $350 million, and millions more are thought to be buried beneath the modern city. Grass Valley's wealth drew flamboyant stars like Lola Montez and gold-camp-urchin-turned-star Lotta Crabtree. It was here that philosopher Josiah Royce was born and Cherokee writer Yellow Bird (John Rollin Ridge) lived his final days. Grass Valley was often the subject of Alonzo Delano's tales of the gold rush, and more recently, it was the setting and inspiration for Wallace Stegner's best seller Angle of Repose.

        Book Description

In the light of the declining sun, amid the muffled sounds of grazing cattle, a Southern California cowgirl considers her life. The language of November Grass, concise yet evocative, transports readers to the coastal hills of San Diego County, where hawks and jays, calves and kittens, and an assortment of backcountry eccentrics bring clarity to questions of birth, death, and love.

In the new introduction Ursula K. Leguin writes, "Van der Veer gives us a rural landscape as deeply known and lived in as Willa Cather's Nebraska or Sara Jewett's Maine. The valley ranches of John Steinbeck's Red Pony and East of Eden are natural comparisons, but Van der Veer's picture is truer, I think, to the patient obscurity of the lives and deaths of those who live on and from this austere land...Pain, suffering, grief, are intense in her story, but not more intense than tenderness and praise."

        5 out of 5 stars San Diego's finest writer.......2001-08-31

In 150 years of American history, San Diego has produced many competent and a few highly successful writers, Max Miller, Oakley Hall and others. Judy Van Der Veer outclasses them all. Her work is pure and fine. It seizes your attention and your heart. It is true, more true than most fiction and nonfiction. You don't just read her books, you experience them, unforgettably. She has waited too long for this first reprint.

5 out of 5 stars Migration as a natural force.......1999-09-10

Imagine the thrill that touches a person at the first Springtime sighting of wild poppies in bloom. If the blossoms are gold, then it's a distinctively California experience, evoking a strong sense of place and of natural wonder. I felt something of the same qualities of delight and surprise when I read Shirley Ewart's Highly Respectable Families: The Cornish of Grass Valley California 1854 - 1954, newly released by Comstock Bonanza Press. In her words the Cornish migration and assimilation into Nevada County, California, assumes the energy of a natural force.

At the center of this ramble through local social history is a tuft of eight family stories - actually a whole meadow - that exemplify the values of the immigrants from the southwestern-most corner of the United Kingdom who came to America to find opportunity for themselves and their children. Here is a vivid and highly readable account of 100 years of nearly constant emigration from Cornwall to California. In telling the stories Shirley enumerates the values that made these families both respected and successful - self-reliance, devotion to family and church, ethnic identity, faith in self-improvement, scorn of liquor, impassive acceptance of hard work and danger, love of music. She explains how these families, who were the arms and hands of industry in the mine, and the voices and faces of faith in the church, earned the respect of the wider community. In a new land they brought an old world culture to full flower.

The vitality of the book comes from the stories themselves, accounts of representative families, such as the Henwoods, the Bennallacks, the Tremenwans and others, all of which turn on intimate moments of decision and self-revelation. The book tells the story of the George family and of Harold J. George, who was offered a cornet if he would learn to play it and who went on to conduct the fabled Grass Valley Cornish Carol Choir for half a century and to bring music to children in the Grass Valley schools. It relates the love story of Jim and Alberta Rowe (grandfather of our Cornish Cousin Winnifred Rowe Cannon) who reportedly never exchanged a cross word in sixty years of marriage, and who were determined that their son would never be "a mucker in a mine." It tells of Mary Anne Mitchell, a young widow and mother scraping by in Cornwall, who had a proposal of marriage from a Cornishmen in America she knew primarily through his letters. She considered the offer and prayed and in the end it was thinking of the future of her two children that turned the balance. In recounting these stories Shirley had the help of Harold T. George, whose name also appears on the book.

Shirley, who spent much of her childhood in St. Ives, Cornwall, and knows first-hand the hardship of immigration and the miseries of homesickness, brought a rare understanding to this work. She was never turned down for an interview, which says as much about her empathy as it does about the generosity of the families she met. She collected these stories over two decades and relates them with sympathy and skill. All of us who are part of the Cornish community owe her a debt of gratitude for preserving and relating these intimate accounts and we are indebted to her publisher for presenting them in such an appealing volume.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for travel to South America.......2005-07-23

I have been travelling regularly to South America since 1994, and from 1996 to 1997 I lived in Lima, Peru. Of all the travel guides I've used over the years, this one beyond any doubt is the most comprehesive single volume of all countries in South America.

I have found the information to be highly reliable. Restaurants and hotels are categorized into the correct price categories, addresses and phone numbers are as up-to-date as can reasonably be expected, and other important information such as bus route numbers, time tables, museum and park hours, holidays, etc. are generally accurate.

The book also does a good job in its descriptions of the sections of cities as well as highlighting the most popular and the off-the-beaten path destinations within the various regions of each country. The maps provided are also very nicely displayed.

If you are planning a trip to South America, particularly if you plan to visit more than one country, use this guide to organize your itinerary, and then bring it with you to make your trip more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Don't get on the flight before you get this handbook.......2005-04-30

We spent 2 and half months in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru. You begin to trust it as you go along and towards the end of our trip we swore by it and started helping other travellers with suggestions from the book. You don't have to think twice when a place is recommended.

The best part of the book is the way is structured. Once you get a feel for it you will love it.

You might need a detailed guide for larger cities like Buenos Aires and Rio.

              Hope this helps.

              Book Description

This poignant, first-of-its-kind book celebrates words that define America's storied past and symbolize the drive of its people—from the boardrooms of Manhattan to the farm fields of Iowa. Author Ryan Coonerty highlights profound phrases inscribed on 52 monuments and public sites. Some are famed monuments like the Lincoln Memorial; others are simple or stark places of honor, such as Angel Island, where immigrant Chinese scrawled their words on imprisoning walls.

Etched In Stone unfolds the American saga from four perspectives. "In Praise of Public Lives" (Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King gravesite) celebrates leaders, thinkers, and innovators. "Ordinary Heroes" (Gettysburg Battlefield, Korean War Memorial, Memphis Firehouse) honors ordinary people who did extraordinary things. "Bearing Witness" (Salem Witchcraft Victims Memorial, Clayton Jackson McGhie Museum in Duluth) seeks to remind future generations of horrendous moments in history that must not be repeated, while "A More Perfect Union" (IBM School House, Dexter Gate at Harvard University, New York Public Library) reveals the promises of America—freedom and future.

              5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Past.......2007-10-07

This book exemplifies a diverse vision of American history. Illustrated through gorgeous photography and compelling writing, the book captures a sense of beauty and darkness laced throughout our nation's past. From the Blacklist monument in South Carolina to victims monument in Oklahoma City to the Marine Corp memorial in Washington D.C., each monument has a diverse meaning and beauty used to move its visitors. With inspiring form and structure, the book emphasizes these elements and creates an environment for its readers to personally experience this dynamic. When I finished reading this book, I felt challenged by the points it illustrated and compelled to explore these monuments in person. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about their American heritage and its complex history.

5 out of 5 stars Great history lesson.......2007-04-01

This book could be a great teaching tool for young people. It passes over great periods in our country giving a bit of context and sometimes up to date information about each monument and the area it inhabits. The pictures are striking and I feel it could get kids to want to learn more about their nation's history without the constraints of a traditional history book. I know in our family it has prompted quite a bit of discussion about traveling to Washington D.C. Awesome, beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars A coffee table book that resonates.......2007-04-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The impressive photography coupled with the author's thoughtful and evocative words make it a great read. It's coffee table-light but at the same time it can be an intense reminder of where our country has been and how we continue to address our history and heroes. I appreciated the diversity of the monuments and some of the lesser known monuments were impressive. The story about the slavery statue in Savannah is inspiring and will hopefully motivate people to organize and get the monument they feel is missing in their area built. I loved the book and it really makes me want to travel to these places.

              Book Description

The breathtaking landscapes of America's national parks reveal the processes that shape our planet.

Many of our national parks, monuments, and seashores were established because of their inspiring geological features. The geysers of Yellowstone, the volcanoes of Hawaii, and the granite peaks of Yosemite bear witness to the "national park idea" as one of our country's greatest contributions to society. Parks and Plates explains the fascinating geological processes that formed the mountain ranges, volcanoes, shorelines, and other dramatic landscapes of America's national treasures.

Robert J. Lillie, a gifted teacher and expert on park geology, takes a unique approach to the subject. By structuring each section of Parks and Plates around major geological features, Lillie highlights geologic patterns across many different parks. He explains these fascinating landforms using examples from over 100 park sites to introduce and illustrate plate tectonics, a simple yet eloquent way to visualize geological processes. Lavishly illustrated throughout with full color photographs, diagrams, and maps, Parks and Plates will enrich the National Park experience for curious travelers and armchair explorers alike. 336 full-color illustrations.
