From the background and general objectives of culture collection and breeding to the genetic systems and molecular biological approaches to breeding, the authors' coverage is in-depth and current, filling a gap which exists in the field. The innovative applications of breeding programs for specific purposes, including the provision of a food source, the production of high value fungal metabolites, the upgrading of lignocellulosic wastes and wastewater treatment, are also discussed.

An important addition to the mushroom breeder's library........1998-02-17

This book is oriented toward those interested in developing improved strains of edible mushroom species. Highlighted species include Flammulina velutipes (enokitake), Lentinula edodes (shiitake), Agaricus bisporus (common white button, portabella, crimini), Coprinus cinereus (woolly inky cap) among others. Caution, this is not a how-to-grow book, but a technical reference for breeders. Reviewed by THE MUSHROOM GROWERS' NEWSLETTER, April 1993 issue.

Travel Map of Buenos Aires.......2007-06-12

I bought this map for my first two week trip to Buenos Aires in 2006. Used it to walk around and BA is a great walking city. The map covers all the tourist areas of BA and I do not recall once something was wrong with the map. Included in the map is a diagram of the subway and on the map itself are the stops. Which I found helpful to find the closet subway stop to my destination. I can recommend this map for people who like to walk.

One more thing, the map is laminated so I could write on it and draw dots on it as a reference point.

I have looked at all the other major books on argentina and out of all of them this is the one book that is complete, tells you what you need to know and moves on.
Most other books are for collage-age youth who want to go and find a bar, cheap hotel and stay up really late. But this is a classy read with beautiful illustrations. This is also coming from someone who is moving to Argentina and knows his stuff so Choose this one and you will not be dissatisfied.

Beautiful photos, good history, not for your suitcase.......1998-10-03

Photographs (all in color) and narrative provide a wonderful introduction to Argentina and its history, but the book's actual value as a "travel companion" is limited. It sometimes reads like the script to a travelogue.."you drive along for xkm and see this town and this town..." It mentions a lot of locations but misses some (Santa Rosa, Neuquen). It would be helpful if the index had references to the map pages and if there were cross references if a place name might be questioned (for example, San Carlos de Bariloche on the map/Bariloche in the index). The travel tips at the back were focused on b.a. and (having just returned) somewhat misleading (the "what to wear" section and its fashion police comments--most places were really casual); the suggestion to take U.S. cash--found atms a better choice; book note that it is no longer "inexpensive" --we found nothing outrageously overpriced. As a pre-trip introduction, a good guide, but too limited in information and too heavy to carry on a trip. For the most complete information and your travel bible, choose instead the new 1998 Argentina handbook!

A nifty reference!.......2006-03-05

The Argentina Insight Guide is a product of the Discovery Channel. I expected lots of photos, and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, there are so many photos the book is heavier than necessary for a "travel guide"; that is, a guide to take with you when you are traveling.

I've never been to Argentina. This book was given to me so that I could track the progress of family members that were traveling there. For this purpose, the book was fantastic, and the great photos a plus. As I received emails about where folks were, I felt I had a "sense of place" even though I wasn't in the country. That was in addition to learning about Argentina history, the people, nature, and what to do and what to see. I was able to write back asking whether they saw certain places, events, or shops. This book added to MY enjoyment of THEIR trip!

That's not a bad feeling to get from a guide book!

And if you plan on taking it with you on your trip, it is crammed with information. There is a 3/8 inch margin around each page of this 6 x 9 x 1 inch book. The editors use every bit of space. You are not buying white paper here! As a "paperback", it has a stiff and hardy cover, and both front and back covers fold out to display a map of the country (front, with areas highlighted and featured inside) and Buenos Aires (back).

Enjoy your actual or cyber trip!

Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. I simply could not put this book down. I just wanted to continue reading on and on. Easy reading, a thriller in it's own way!!! I first thought this was based on a true story, although the author states it is not, it was so intense, I found the story line believable!!! Gotta have this one if you like suspense, thrillers and something that seems believable!
