Excellent field guide for nature enthusiasts of Nebraska.......2000-09-05
I received this book as a gift from a nature center where I worked. I have used this guide in Nebraska, Ohio, and even S.Dakota. The book is organized by color of flower which is fast and easy when in the field. The full-color pictures are excellent and accompanied with very percise discription of other common names, family, flowering period, distribution, habitat, description and general information. I would recommend this book to any person interested in indentifying or just finding out a little bit more about the wildflowers of Nebraska.

Book Description
Illustrated by two hundred and sixty color plates, Nebraska Wild Flowers depicts and describes the most conspicuous native and naturalized flowers which continue to thrive or which have recently invaded the various habitats of the state after well over a hundred years of settlement.
Most plant descriptions include the principal flower color, the time of blossoming, and the basis for the common and scientific names. The book also includes keys for identifying the plants, a glossary, and an index.
As the only recent work on the subject intended for the general public, Nebraska Wild Flowers will be welcomed by all flower lovers in this region. It also will be useful as a reference manual or textbook in a variety of natural history or local flora courses.
Robert C. Lommasson is a professor of botany at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he has taught since 1948. A native of Kansas, he holds A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Kansas and the Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

Customer Reviews:
Only a Dummy would buy this book and Frommers.......2007-01-27
I love to thoroughly research and plan vacations, gleaning recommendations and experiences from as many independent sources as possible. Therefore, I ordered BOTH Frommer's Bahamas 2007 and Bahamas for Dummies to get two different opinions. Bahamas for Dummies repeats Frommer's hotel and restaurant recommendations WORD-FOR-WORD. The Dummies who wrote this book obviously did NO independent research of their own. In fact in turns out Wiley published both books. The only redeeming feature is the cute little post-it flags, that I can stick inside my Frommers guide book!
Excellent guide,but w/ a few (inconsequential) inaccuracies.......2004-03-03
I thought this was a great effort to present the true Bahamas, but unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies that seem to confuse The Bahamas with other countries in the West Indies, particularly in referring to the language. Bahamians would never refer to their dialect as patois. (that's Jamaica and other countries). Bahamians just call their English dialect "Bahamian dialect". And some of the words are not in general use as stated, e.g. nyam is Jamaican, and bobo, if used, more usually refers to Rastas, not morons.

Customer Reviews:
I've had better .......2007-03-26
the book was informative but it left out several interesting islands. the book only covered 11 islands & i know there is more than that. for a first time visitor to the caribbean you need information on all the islands so you can choose which one is best for YOU!!! As i said okay book but fodors or frommers is a much better choice.
What about the other 90% of the Caribbean?.......2004-04-16
Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands.
Aruba is in, but not Bonaire or Curacao. Nor St Maarten to round off the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles, plus its French half St Martin.
Grand Cayman yes - Cayman Brac and Little Cayman? These beauties are a short hop away for the discerning traveler.
Jamaica is in, but not Cuba.
Puerto Rico is there but not the Dominican Republic or the Spanish Virgin Islands. In better times Haiti can be an attractive destination.
BVI and USVI are there. No sign of Anguilla.
Further down the great chain of the East Caribbean islands all we see is Barbados (which is stuck out in the Atlantic anyway and does not count itself as East Caribbean). These islands are almost all popular holiday destinations for land or cruise travelers. St Kitts and Nevis (laid back), Antigua and Barbuda (365 beaches), the French islands Guadeloupe and Martinique (incomparable cooking and rum), Dominica (the only true rain forest in the Caribbean), St Lucia (spectacular), St Vincent and the Grenadines (sailing as good as BVI), Grenada (an under-appreciated gem with beaches every bit as good as Grand Cayman), Trinidad and Tobago (restful Tobago). No to mention a few islands like St Eustatius and Saba in the north, plus volcanic Montserrat for at least for a day trip from Antigua.
Anyone who relied on this book for a true view of the Caribbean really would be a Dummy. There is not one country in here that uses the East Caribbean dollar.
PS I live and work in the Caribbean. I have lived on four islands, visited thirty-six at the last count, and I am still delighted and amazed to find wonders round every corner.
incomplete.......2003-08-01
The review says that the book includes information on St. Lucia and St. Maarten/St. Martin. It does not. It totally ignores most of the smaller islands of the Caribbean. I realize that they could not fit an in-depth analysis of all the Caribbean islands into one book, but to totally ignore the vast majority of islands makes this book incomplete and disappointing.
Excellent and Current!.......2001-05-02
This book is great. It has so much information about the caribbean. These Garrett folks are hilarious. They seem to put their heart into this book and I appreciate it. There is a lot of info for couples looking for romantic spots and for families with kids. This rocks!

Book Description
The Great Platte River Road through Nebraska and Wyoming was the grand corridor of America's westward expansion. A number of famous trails converged in the broad valley of the Platte, forming a kind of primitive superhighway for the great covered wagon migration from 1841 to 1866. From jumping-off places along the Missouri River—notably the Omaha-Council Bluffs, St. Joseph, and Kansas City areas—the emigrant throngs came together at Fort Kearny, Nebraska. Although they continued on to South Pass, Wyoming, and beyond, this book focuses on the feeder mutes and the more than three hundred miles between Fort Kearny and Fort Laramie.
The Great Platte River Road looks at border towns, trail routes, river crossings, stage stations, military posts, and such landmarks as Chimney Rock and Scott's Bluff. It goes far beyond geography and Indian encounters in revealing cultural aspects of the great migration: food, dress, equipment, organization, camping, traffic patterns, sex ratios, morals, manners, religion, crime, accidents, disease, death, and burial customs.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2003-04-04
Citing from over 700 journals, diaries and letters, Merrill Mattes' "The Great Platte River Road" is a must read for history enthusiasts of the Oregon Trail. From the five main jumping off points along the Missouri River: Independence, Ft. Leavenworth, St. Joe, Nebraska City and Council Bluffs, we see how all emigrant roads lead to Ft. Kearny. From here the lengthy and laborious journey to the west followed the Platte River. Mattes incorporates the overlander's journals with his own effective style of writing to give vivid, down-to-earth, hard-nosed descriptions of past events in such places as Ft. Kearny, Ash Hollow, Court House Rock, Chimney Rock, Scottsbluff and culminating with Ft. Laramie. He not only communicates the difficulties endured by the emigrants themselves such as river crossings, cholera and survival, but also chronicles accounts of the Pony Express, military, Indians, stage lines, etc. and how they all played a part in Manifest Destiny. Not only was this book a pleasure to read, it was extremely insightful and deep-rooted of our Westward expansion.

Product Description
Experience the untamed beauty of early America in Where the Rivers Run North, a new historical novel from Sam Morton. Morton's extensively researched fiction carries the reader through three eras in the history of Abraska, or what is now southern Montana and northern Wyoming. From the days when Native American tribes dominated the landscape to the hardships of fledgling pioneer life to times of fast-paced modern development, Where the Rivers Run North introduces a shifting cast of characters as intriguing as they are diverse. One thread runs throughout--the figure of the horse, whether running wild on the plains or competing on the racetrack.
Customer Reviews:
fun and informative.......2007-09-03
With the horse as it's foundation, "Where the Rivers Run North," is a sprawling patchwork of the history of the Absaraka area of the old West. It is a must read for anyone with an interest in horses and sure to be entertaining for anyone familiar with the area. Though labeled as fiction, the book is based on the actual people, horses and events shaped by this land. As someone who grew up in the area and who is acquainted with the history of the people who inhabit his book, I find that Mr Morton's colorful vignettes capture the true character and flavor and spirit of this time and place in history.

Book Description
To weary travelers on the Oregon Trail during the middle decades of the nineteenth century, Fort Laramie was a welcome sight. Its walls and flag-decked towers rose from the high plains, their solidity suggesting that the white man was gaining a toehold in the wilderness.
Hafen and Young present the colorful history of Fort Laramie from its establishment as Fort John in 1834 to its abandonment in 1890. Early on, the fort was controlled by the American Fur Company and patronized by trappers like Jim Bridger and Kit Carson. Then it was a vital supply center and rest stop for a tide of emigrants--missionaries, Mormons, forty-niners, and homeseekers.
As more wagons rolled west and the Pony Express came through, the need for protection increased; in 1849, Fort Laramie was converted from a trapper's post into a military fort. Down through the years there were skirmishes with the Plains Indians, who sometimes came to the fort to barter and to treat. The peace council of 1851—one of the largest gatherings of tribes ever seen in the Old West—is here described in fascinating detail.
The cast of characters in this great historical pageant reads like a who's who of the American West.
Customer Reviews:
Splendid.......2004-10-09
A noble piece of work on this legendary sentinel of the American west.
From the initial founding of Fort Laramie as a trading post in 1834 by fur trappers William Sublette and Robert Campbell, to the demise as a military outpost in 1890, the reader is chronologically taken along on these fifty-six years as to the importance of this western safe haven.
We read of the significance of Ft. Laramie to the traders and Indians, the transfer of it to the American Fur Company, then finally to the U. S. military in 1849. It was a beacon to the thousands of trail emigrants from the 1840's through the 1860's while stocking up on supplies, livestock and repairs to wagons.
It also importantly served as a military safeguard to the emigrants, thwarting Indian insurgencies from the 1850's through 1870's, contributed to the principal mail line and Pony Express to California, to freighters going further west, etc. etc.
The authors cover not only the history of the fort itself, but also the relationship of this stronghold to other geographical areas in its region.
Excellent read and very presentable.
