Book Description
Evolutionary biologists have produced a solid body of evidence to explain patterns of diversification, both within and among species. Recent textbooks are weighted towards studies of animals, which is surprising given that plants are ideally suited for answering evolutionary questions. This book places the wealth of data that have been collected on plants into the unifying framework of game theory. It is the authors' hope that many students will take on this challenge and help the study of the evolutionary ecology of plants to develop as a mature, predictive science.
Customer Reviews:
Good, detailed overview of plant reproductive systems.......2007-03-10
This is a decent, well-documented overview of plant reproductive systems, with much supporting theory as to how and why they evolved. The decidedly theoretical approach works well, but the mathematical underpinnings may be difficult for some with a more empirical background. Nevertheless, this book will probably remain the best general introduction to this topic for quite some time.

Book Description
Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection presents the intricate ways in which sperm compete to fertilize eggs and how this has prompted reinterpretations of breeding behavior. This book provides a theoretical framework for the study of sperm competition, which is a central part of sexual selection. It also discusses the roles of females and the relationships between paternal care in sperm competition. The chapters focusing on taxonomic development are diverse and cover all the major animal groups, both vertebrate and invertebrate, and plants. The final chapter provides an overview discussing the relationship between sperm competition and sexual selection in terms of both function and mechanism and how these translate into species fitness. This book will be of prime interest to behaviorists, ecologists and evolutionary biologists, suggesting new avenues of research and new ways of approaching old problems.

Book Description
This collection of reviews by leading investigators examines plant reproduction and sexuality within a framework of evolutionary ecology, providing an up-to-date account of the field. The contributors discuss conceptual issues, showing the importance of sex allocation, sexual selection and inclusive fitness, and the dimensions of paternity and maternity in plants. The evolution, maintenance, and loss of self-incompatibility in plants, the nature of 'sex choice' in plants, and sex dimorphism are all explored in detail. Specific forms of biotic interactions shaping the evolution of plant reproductive strategy are discussed, and a taxonomically based review of the reproductive ecology of non-angiosperm plant groups, such as bryophytes, ferns, and algae, is presented. Together these studies focus on the complexities of plant life cycles and the distinctive reproductive biologies of these organisms, while showing the similarities between nonflowering plants and the more thoroughly documented flowering species.
Customer Reviews:
A theoretical book about plant reproductive ecology.......2000-09-18
This book concludes fifteen chapters written by different specialists offers a various theoretical points of views of plant breeding systems. The authors discussed about several early unclear or incomplete but important plant reproductive theories, which have been proved or carefully studied since then. The authors discussed every example and case elaborately and objectively; however, it seemed to be insufficient because of paucity of empirical data in that era. This is still a good book for who have backgrounds in plant reproductive biology and ecology, and want to have primary ideas of plant reproductive theories.

Plant-Pollinator Interactions: From Specialization to Generalization
ASIN: 0120883864 |
Book Description
Much effort has been devoted to developing theories to explain the wide variation we observe in reproductive allocation among environments.
Reproductive Allocation in Plants describes why plants differ in the proportion of their resources that they allocate to reproduction and looks into the various theories. This book examines the ecological and evolutionary explanations for variation in plant reproductive allocation from the perspective of the underlying physiological mechanisms controlling reproduction and growth. An international team of leading experts have prepared chapters summarizing the current state of the field and offering their views on the factors determining reproductive allocation in plants. This will be a valuable resource for senior undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers in ecology, plant ecophysiology, and population biology.
* 8 outstanding chapters dedicated to the evolution and ecology of variation in plant reproductive allocation
* Written by an international team of leading experts in the field
* Provides enough background information to make it accessible to senior undergraduate students
* Includes over 60 figures and 29 tables

Book Description
Reproductive Ecology of Tropical Forest Plants reviews recent developments in the reproductive ecology of tropical forest plants and explores the implications of current findings on forest structure, function, management, and conservation. It examines how insights gained from reproductive ecology can be helpful in the management of tropical forest resources and discusses directions of future research.

Description:
Invasive alien species affect the composition and functioning of invaded ecosystems in many ways, altering ecological interactions that have arisen over evolutionary timescales. Specifically, disruptions to pollination and seed-dispersal mutualistic interactions are often documented, although the profound implications of such impacts are not widely recognized. Such disruptions can occur via the introduction of alien pollinators, seed dispersers, herbivores, predators or plants, and we define here the many potential outcomes of each situation. The frequency and circumstances under which each category of mechanisms operates are also poorly known. Most evidence is from population-level studies, and the implications for global biodiversity are difficult to predict. Further insights are needed on the degree of resilience in interaction networks, but the preliminary picture suggests that invasive species frequently cause profound disruptions to plant reproductive mutualisms.

Description:
Root-feeding nematodes may play an important role in generating spatial and temporal variation in natural plant communities, but little is known about the performance of the nematodes in the plant root zone. We studied the emergence, survival and reproductive success of the cyst nematode Heterodera arenaria, a root feeding-specialist that occurs in mobile dunes. The host plants of H. arenaria are buried regularly by windblown sand to which the plants respond by upward clonal expansion. As a consequence, the nematodes have to migrate upwards in the soil profile to find new roots for feeding and reproduction, however, not all juveniles migrate. We tested the hypothesis that the offspring from migrated individuals would perform better than from individuals that remained behind and discuss the advantage of this dualistic behavior. The individual performance of the cyst nematodes was better when their juveniles migrated to the new root layer. In the field, in the new root layer the cysts had more eggs and juveniles than cysts collected from the 1-year-old root layer. Under controlled conditions, cysts from the new root layer released their first juveniles faster than cysts from the 1-year-old root layer. However, the juveniles that do not migrate might be crucial for the persistence of the population. In the past decade in two extremely dry years, we could not find cysts in the new root layer. Apparently, summer drought constrains cyst formation, so that the cysts produced in the older root layers serve as a reservoir for the population. Such reservoirs could become more important when climate change will result in increased incidence of summer droughts.

Description:
Invasive species are regarded as one of the largest global threats to biodiversity, but little is still known about the invasion of exotic plants into tropical forests. In this paper, we examine how the size and canopy openness of human-created gaps inside the Mabira forest-reserve in Uganda, affect the invasion of one of the world's most noxious weeds, Lantana camara L. Sub-population size inside gaps was positively related to gap size, and components of individual plant size increased with increasing gap size and canopy openness. Moreover, the reproductive effort of L. camara increased with gap size and canopy openness, whereas the fruit production of individual plants was unrelated to gap size and canopy openness. Finally, there was no relationship between gap size and pollinator visitation to inflorescence, but a marginally significant relationship occurred between canopy openness and pollinator visitation. Overall, our results suggest that the size of human-created gaps inside Mabira forest-reserve positively affect aspects of the population dynamics of L. camara. We propose strategies for a campaign aimed at removing L. camara from this forest-reserve, with minimal disturbance to intact forest habitats.

Whistler's pastels.......2007-06-13
James Abbott McNeill Whistler: Pastels is an excellent book, especially since the reproductions are of such high quality and Whistler's pastels are rarely represented in art books. I loaned the book to the instructor of my color drawing class, and she based one of our class lessons in pastels on the techniques and general sensibility of Whistler. My art library is extensive, and I spend a lot of time looking and then applying what I have learned in my own work. James Abbott McNeill Whistler: Pastels is one of my current favorites as a delightful reference source.
