I used this book during my Master in Science (Biofilm modelling). The theory contained in this book is up to date and every chapter in it contains valuable information. It was of great help, chapters are well organized and it covers all important aspects of environmental biotechnology.
A must have for every person related to environmental engineering or sciences.

Good discussion of the biological nitrification and denitrification process. The book is somewhat somewhat repetitive, but if you are only reading one or two chapters, it is a good reference book.

The hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation of petroleum and refinery cuts have been in continuous development and in industrial practice for several decades. New environmental constraints regarding the quality of fuels has produced a renaissance of this field as the search for novel solution to this problem intensifies. This volume reviews the structures, bonding and reactions of metal complexes of the thiophenes and other HDS-related molecules, as well as of some HDN-related organinitrogen compounds. This chemistry is analyzed in the context of modeling some key species and reactions implicated in HDS and HDN catalysis. Many parallels are drawn between organometallic and surface chemistry, and homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Description:
Microbial granules with excellent settleability were successfully developed at different ammonium-N loadings in four sequencing batch reactors run under alternating aerobic-anaerobic conditions. Results showed that heterotrophic, nitrifying and denitrifying populations could co-exist in the microbial granules. The activity of denitrifying bacteria was highly determined by the availability of external carbon source in the anaerobic phase. Complete denitrification was achieved with supply of external carbon source, whereas only partial denitrification occurred with no addition of external carbon source. This study shows that microbial granules cultivated under the alternating aerobic-anaerobic condition could efficiently remove organic carbon and completely convert ammonia to nitrogen gas. A new generation of microbial granules-based bioreactor for organics and nitrogen removal can be envisaged.

Serious Hikes for Serious Walkers.......2006-03-13

Los Angeles has a lot of neat countryside to explore if you know where to look. When I first came to the LA basin from Idaho, I was overwhelmed by the suburban sprawl, but I quickly found lots of nice outdoor experiences nearby. This book will help anyone else looking to escape the city for a few hours (or days). It features over 80 hikes all within 2 hours of LA.

I've hiked about a third of the trails described in this guide and all are nice. With time off in April, I expect to explore more. By way of a warning though, you will need to be reasonably fit to do many of these hikes. Most are 5 to 10 miles long, often with substantial elevation gain. Several are shorter, but a few are quite challenging. Happily, the authors also provide options for shortening (and sometimes lengthening) your walks. The bulk of the hikes listed are in the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Monica National Recreation Areas. A few selections from Orange County, Palos Verde and Catalina Island round out the book. On the whole, this book is an excellent investment in fun and exploration.

Ive read & own all the books from the Illustrated series from Hermes House. This book is sort of split into two parts, there are activities for childern (which was no interest to me) on the bottom of most pages, where they have projects to make and do, then the information part covering 70% of the page. I wasnt going to buy the book because of the activities, yet after reading a section at a bookstore, i noticed that there was alot of information that would interest a person of my age (25). While not heavy on detail, it does list all main points and facts, complete with picutres etc and covers a wide range of topics. Im very happy with it.

Drawing Now does a good job of critically displaying the work of many contemporary artists. Unlike Vitamin D, this book does not take a shotgun approach to viewing contemporary art, and as a result is more satisfying to behold. Not all the artists represented have great work, but you get quality reproductions of it, and worthwhile commentary on each of the thematic "propositions" in the book. Worth buying if you have the money. Worth renewing your library's copy if you don't.

Provocative Survey.......2006-11-02

The catalogue that accompanies the Drawing Now exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art is just as well thought and carefully crafted. The show is divided into eight themes that bring a solid foundation to a wide scope of works. Each section in the catalogue begins with an insightful essay further developing the rich ideas behind the show. The beautiful illustrations and large format of the book further compliment the important artworks included in the exhibition.

a decent and wholly predictable show/book.......2003-07-30

None of the decisions in this show were very difficult to make. All of the current stars in the drawing/painting world are present (John Currin, Kara Walker, Elizabeth Peyton, Kai Atoff, etc.) and the work they've offered is mediocre. That is not to say the work is bad by normal standards, they are the best of the contemporary scene for a reason: they're good. But, looking at each artist's best work, none of this is it. The essays are kind of hokey and embarrassing (in a bad way). The book is worth buying if you want to seem like you're "with it" when it comes to contemporary art, or if you are a student (such as myself, forever) and need it for research purposes to aid your own studio practice.

will we see a drawing show of this scope. MoMA Queens has done itself proud with this show, and my friends who are totally into drawing made a special effort to see it after I sent them this spectacular record of the show itself. (Too bad the museum is such a mess, at least for the time being!)
