drawing.......2007-01-18
book is good for drawing from scratch. it's helpful for someone just beginning to study art.
For young art lovers.......2005-09-09
On library day at school my daughter usually brings home an art book of some kind. Most of the time it was a book by Lee J. Ames. Marissa really wants to draw well but at 8 doesn't understand that you have to work hard at it. I suggested to her that she get a piece of white paper and trace over the drawings and then color them in. She has really made some beautiful drawings using this book.
Not a good book.......2005-01-17
I am a horrible but determined artist. I have enjoyed the "How to Draw 50..." series since I was very young. However, this particular book is not helpful: majority of the drawings are far too intricate to follow, most of them are unknown plants and flowers, and it fails to teach something.
Unlike the "How to Draw 50 Athletes" this book doesn't have a goal, other than to instruct you on how to mimic some plants and flowers. Whereas, after going through the "Draw 50 Athletes," I learned how to draw the human body; the muscles, head features, proportions, and how they moved.
This book is not for beginners I assure you of this. I understand nature is harder to recognize and capture, but the book just was too difficult to follow, I was only capable of drawing 12 of the 50, and I do each one many times, and I still showed no improvement.
It's just not worth owning. You won't learn anything, and you wont enjoy the process of drawing the plants and flowers. I promise.
In My Humble Opinion

Draw 50 Flowers, Trees and Other Plants.......2002-07-31
This is a great instructional book. It takes you step by step thru the process. I would reccommend it to anyone starting out in drawing.
Book Description
An exciting new approach to learning about botany. Teaches the structure and function of plants and surveys the entire plant kingdom.

Botany Coloring Book.......2006-02-28
I found this extremely helpful for a Botany For Gardener's course I am taking. Even though it seems to take a long time to color each page, it really helps to visualize the material and remember it more easily.
This study technique works well for me........2002-07-03
At first you have to hide the fact that at, age 53, you are using a coloring book! Nevertheless I have stuck with it through a number of pages and have found out that my retention and ability to recall through visualizing the diagrams increases many fold versus the read and think method. When I revisit the pages to study the topic it comes back much easier. The book seems to be a good balance between the written text/descriptions and the illustrations. It takes a fairly big time commitment and at times you ask yourself, "Is this the best use of my study time?". Well after a few days the accuracy of my retention answered that question with a huge YES. It is much more technical than how one might visualize as 'coloring book'. I really do enjoy it and am learning the topics.
Excellent for older students including college age.......1998-10-06
This is an incredibly detailed and thorough examination of the anatomy and physiology of plants. A great way to for visual learners to supplement their learning experience. I found it extremely helpful in my college Introductory Botany course.
This book is interesting and fun!.......1998-07-19
I wanted to know more about plants and how to look at plants. How do you start without to find out when you do not really want to commit time to doing a college course or reading technical books? I am more than pleased to find a book that is so complete and is written for adults. Can't belive how much fun I'm having with it. Thanks, Authors!

Customer Reviews:
Great for the US.......2007-09-18
This is a beautiful book and my 8 year old daughter refers to it occasionally, but I think that because so many of the animals in it are never seen in Sydney, Australia my children aren't really into this book. It hasn't inspired them to get into the garden and look around.
Excellent for getting kids interested in being outdoors.......2007-03-21
My son is 4 and loves all worms and bugs. This book is carried with us everywhere. He knows the names of the bugs and the earthworms habits. I love it that he is interested in something that will expand his mind, make him aware of his environment and keeps him away from the TV! He is still a little too young for squaring off a part of the yard but that could be next year. The illustrations are excellent, it creates a forum for conversation, love of nature and science. Too often our children are caught up in brands and being sold from TV brands and characters that are shallow and offer little to our children. How wonderful to fuel interest in something outdoors and interactive with the world we live in.
Wonderful!.......2007-01-20
This book (and others in the series) is a real treasure. Your kids, and you, are guaranteed to enjoy and make use of this great little book.
...a treasure-trove for the young explorer........1999-08-24
My three children have thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful illustrations, dynamic fact-filled text, and activities given in this book. We love the whole One Small Square series, but because this book has helped solve some mysteries in our own backyard, this one is our favorite! It also served as a great companion to several curricular themes and field trips during the school year.
Wonderful book for this summer when "there's nothing to do!".......1999-04-26
We read this book over and over! My son learns something new every time. The illustrations are numerous and detailed. "Backyard" provides a great springboard for further exploration of the world.

Beautifully illustrated, Woods offers a picture field guide, a glossary-index, and a resource list.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing amount of info and inspiration & [good] price!.......2002-10-27
What a gem! I was surprised when I discovered this book. The gist of the book is for the child (or adult) to mark off a square space in the woods and begin exploring and learning. This book is a real integration of activities, suggested observations, and fact. The learner is to explore, dig, look, observe and investigate every inch of this square area. While suggesting the learner look for this or that, the author provides factual information about various findings. The book goes into a lot of detail and there are many things that the author thinks may be found. I bet that the learner won't find everything that is mentioned but that is OK, at least the reader can experience it in reading about it in the book if it is missed "in real life".
The book starts off in autumn, assuming the learner begins in the fall and in an area of deciduous trees. A small sampling of what is addressed in this book is why trees lose their leaves, how trees store energy and make energy, examples of camouflage with animals, migration of birds and butterflies, insects, spiders and their webs, lizards and mammals big and small. As the book progresses winter then spring then summer is discussed.
The illustrations are drawn and in color (just like the cover), these are not photographs. There are loads of details in the drawings. At the back is an illustrated guide to creatures grouped by their classification (leaves, mammals, fungi) and an index.
The learner is encouraged to do creative projects such as leaf and trunk rubbings. Also keeping a nature journal or notebook to record the findings is recommended.
I am surprised that so much information and creative ideas packed into this small and very inexpensive book. This is one in a series of "one small square" books and I plan to buy more to use in our homeschooling adventure. Now this is science!
Great details.......2000-03-30
This book provides a small instant field trip to those students who might not have access to woods. It gives incredible details of what goes on in one small square of woods. For those who have access to wooded areas for exploration...safety tips are included as well as supplies needed for collecting data while exploring. I teach second grade and use all of the Small Square books in my teaching.
Customer Reviews:
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-03-25
This book is THE BEST!! My absolute favorite wildflower book for the North Georgia Mountains... and I have tried MANY. I am a professional naturalist and lead wildflower hikes all spring. This book is my bible! I carry it everywhere I go. Easy to use, lots of species covered, wonderful ethnobotany information (great "stories" to use while leading hikes). Detailed enough to get the ID right, general enough for anyone to use. Wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful book... (as are Lone Pine's other plant books covering other regions.) HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!
Hands-down Favorite Smoky Mtns/TN Wildflower ID Book.......2007-02-23
I've been cataloging thousands of wildflower photos over the past six years and probably own or have "borrowed" most wildflower field ID guides that are out there. This book is easily my favorite. Why?
Easy to use: A color key w/thumbnail images for more than half of the flowers in the book makes finding the right flower much easier if you do not know which family of flowers to search in. If you do have to browse all the pages then the placement of flower photos along the outside edges of the pages makes thumbing thru the book easier than most. The pages are substantial enough to make for easy browsing too.
Ethnobotanical info: Most flowers have a special paragraph about the historical and current usages of the flowering plants for purposes other than visual pleasure, i.e. medicinal, food, ceremonial, dyes, etc.
I'd been using Jack Carman's book "Wildflowers of Tennessee" as my "bible" for TN wildflowers but now this book with a similar name is my favorite. I still use the Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers as a "family locator" because of its easy-to-use key (flower color plus bloom type) when searching for that unknown flower. One big aggravation with the Audubon book is that the details are in the "white pages" somewhere in the back of the book. The Wildflowers of Tennessee book has all of the info right there on the same page as the photo.
For newbies the color key makes this book user friendly--even though the flowers are grouped by family, genus then species (as are most wildflower field guides).
Downside? There are still many, many species flower flowers that have only a description rather than an actual photograph. However, this book is small enough to be practical in the field.
The price is great! I paid almost thirty dollars for the Carman book and it was worth every penny. I don't know how they can sell this fabulous book for such a low price.
Highly recommended. If you want to buy only one wildflower ID book for the Smokies then this is it.
one of the best!.......2006-11-13
I love this book. Great photo's. Easy to use. Small enough to take along. Interesting plant lore on every page.
This book is wonderful!.......2006-11-03
I purchased this book for a friend's birthday and after looking through it, nearly kept it.
W O W what a book!.......2006-04-22
This is the absolute book for wildflowers. Pictures are clear and precise, the information is a bonus. What a book!

Wild Flower Identification.......2007-07-23
I have not found a wild flower that I can not identify using this book. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants to know what that pretty flower by the road is
Wildflowers of Arkansas.......2007-06-11
This is a thoughtfully done book. The photographs are excellent but I found it to be too academic for those who are interested in quick flower identification. I admire the fact that the procedes are designated for a worthwhile cause as the Ozark Society.
Excellent ID guide for your backroad trips!.......2005-02-08
I take Mr. Hunter's book with me on hiking trips because there is ALWAYS a flower or tree that I need to know the name. This is an excellent guide for flowers. The clear, crisp photos show you what no illustration can. The detailed descriptions leave no doubt. It has become a goal of mine to photograph each new one that I encounter. If it hadn't been for "Wildflowers of Arkansas" I would have never been able to ID most of them.
As a footnote, if traveling near a statepark in Arkansas, go to their giftshop/bookstore and pick up your own copy--- for the list price. You can still find them and you'll save a few bucks. And while you're there pick up one more of his invaluable resources such as "Trees, Shrubs and Vines of Arkansas".
I never leave home without them...
The Best Wildflower Book Ever.......2002-05-10
This is the best book for identifying wildflowers that I have ever used. It works!! The blossom pictures are clear and make matching my finds to the pictures certain. My old copy was damaged. Since I was getting a new edition, I took the old copy to work. My coworkers liked it as much as I do. Several are buying their own copies for home use. This book is terrific!
A valuable resource.......2001-07-07
This is a valuable resource for the naturalist as well as the wildflower enthusiast which describes 600 wildflowers found in Arkansas. Color photographs are provided for 484 flowers. Plants are arranged by family; this may seem awkward at first, but the book is well indexed. A glossary, state map showing regions, and diagrams of plant parts are other helpful tools provided in the book. This book is a must for me while hiking or driving the highways and backroads of my state. The only way Hunter could have improved this resource, is by providing a color guide for quicker idntification.

Customer Reviews:
Just the Best!.......2003-07-31
I purchased this reference a few years ago. Once I received it and began using it, I wondered how I'd ever gotten along without it. The author's British and so the dictionary's common names are more often "British" than "American", but it is still the handiest plant dictionary I have. It is a little larger than pocket size, but it is still small enough to be held comfortably in one hand.
A review is superfluous.......2000-07-10
This book does not need a review. Anybody who is involved in plants, other than the garden kind, knows full well that this is an essential reference. Quite up to date too, which is pretty amazing in view of the pace that science sets. There is an enormous mass of data in here, printed on very thin paper, making for a very handy book that will fit a spot near where you need it, which is likely to be often.
My most used reference book.......1999-11-07
As a graduate student in ecology I often encounter unfamiliar genera in the literature, and a quick peek in Mabberley gives me enough taxonomic grounding to keep plowing ahead. By constantly referring to this book, I have greatly improved my knowledge of plant relationships.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing But Nice Things to Say About It.......2005-04-19
This is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by all age groups and levels of education. The book's introduction says "Although a pond looks peaceful, a pond is home to more creatures doing more things than you imagined. There are millions of ponds everywhere. . .there is a good chance that one is close to your home."
The book does a good job of telling the reader about these creatures and their activities. Pond is written primarily for younger readers. From the beginning it stresses safety and adult involvement in the field activities. The book has excellent illustrations of the pond organisms and the equipment needed for the field activities. The pictures are very communicative and would be enjoyed by younger readers. The accompanying text may be a little beyond their understanding.
Overall the book describes the pond creatures, their habitats, and their activities. Some of the habitats mentioned include the surface film, lily pads, water column, and bottom muck (benthos). Some activities covered are feeding, laying eggs, photosynthesis, and absorbing oxygen, plus others. The book also talks about changing conditions in a pond, such as when it rains, nightime critters and activities, and the pond during different seasons.
The end of the book has seven pages of common pond creatures. It groups them by mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, non-insect invertebrates, plants, fungi, protists, and monera. Both this section and the well-organized index contain many pictures. The groupings may be lost on younger readers, but are very useful for higher level students.
All in all I really like this book. It is well organized and an enjoyable read. As a college educator I use this book as a reference source, yet can read it and show the wonderful illustrations to my young nieces.
One Small Square -- Pond.......2001-04-16
This is one of the best books in a spectacular series that represnts the world, particularly to the young child, as a place of science, high drama, and magic. The magnificent illustrations of Patricia J. Wynne, the world-renowned natural history artist, pull the reader into the world of the small small pond with power and intimacy that no photograph could ever match; the clear and concise text of Donald M. Silver encourages the exploration of science and the joy of reading. I highly recommend this book to teachers, libraries, and parents everywhere, and suggest pursuing the rest of the series as well.

This book is part of a series of guides designed for adolescents interested in natural history and nature. The books are an excellent introduction to the Rocks and Minerals, Birds, Wildflowers, and Insects for children aged 8-18. Each guide is appropriately sized to fit in a field vest pocket. Readers who remember previous versions of these field guides from the 1970s that were dull and overly detailed will be pleasantly surprised. These books are arguably the most beautifully photographed and laid out field guides yet published for young people. Each book has an introductory section filled with interesting facts, descriptions of early naturalists, definitions of many of the terms used in the book, and a guide to using the field guide portion of the book. Best of all, the books also come equipped with laminated field "cheat sheet" cards, for quick identification while on the go, in any kind of weather. Each field guide features 50 common wildflowers with photos and brief descriptions of many more regionally occurring species. Brief discussions of threatened and endangered species are particularly valuable. Great first guides for children and adults with limited natural history background.
The Wildflowers guide has excellent photographs and descriptions enough flowers to represent most regions of the United States. --Merri Martz
